The Sunday Morning Minyan will always start at 9:00 a.m.
Currently, the Sunday Morning Minyan starts at 9:00 a.m. except on
Rosh Chodesh or a holiday when the service can be expected to last
longer than thirty minutes. In order to give the Men's Club time to
accommodate to this change, it will not begin until July l, 1995.
To accommodate people who are saying Kaddish, we will be
instituting a Sunday Evening Minyan at 8:00 p.m. and an Evening
Minyan at 8:00 p.m. on Federal holidays when the synagogue is
closed. This will be instituted as soon as logistical arrangements can
be worked out.
We urge people to attend the Evening Minyan when they are
assigned. All of us have the responsibility to make sure there is a
minyan for those who need to say Kaddish. Only ifeach ofus comes
to the Evening Minyan during the week we are assigned can we insure
that there will be a minyan. If you have any suggestions how to get
people to come to the Evening Minyan, please share them with me.

At the Februarl22,1995 meeting of the Ritual Committee

number of decisions were made regarding services. Starting time of
the weekday Morning Minyan, the Sunday Morning Minyan, and the
availability ofa Sunday evening and national holiday Evening Minyan
were discussed.

Monday through Friday momings. In response to the Morning
Minyan regulars' request, beginning July l, 1995, the only time the
weekday Moming Minyan will be at 9:00 a.m. will be on Labor Day,

Currently these minyanim occur at 9:00 a.m. The rationale for this
change is that although these days are Federal holidays, people who
do not work for the Federal government, particularly those in retail
businesses, need to work on these days and can't make a 9:00 a.m.
minyan.

Beth El will once again open its doors to shelter twenty
homeless men and women in our synagogue for the week of
April 2nd through April fth. The Congregation Based Shelter
progftm is run by Community Ministry of Montgomery County,

School; determining whether a child is Jewish is not part of the
admissions process. Because you have chosen a Jewish life for
your family and because children can be fragile when it comes
to questions about'oWhat/Who am I?", Keruv encourages you to
convert your children to Judaism as early in their lives as
possible. In any case, conversion must take place before a

ShabbatDiscussions
Keruv welcomes everyone to our Shabbat discussion
group, held after the morning services on the third Shabbat of
each month. In our discussions we talk about how we have met
our own challenges with children, spouses and grandchildren,
our questions about how to integrate our non-Jewish family
members in Jewish life, and how we preserve our Jewish heritage. The next discussion will be held on May 20th and will focus

of which Beth El is a member, and the MonQomery County
Department of Social Services. CBS is a system of fifly
churches and two synagogues which volunteer to provide temporary overnight year-round housing to certain homeless individuals in Montgomery County. The program is now in its
twelfth year.
The shelter will operate as it did last year: we will provide
dinner, breakfast and a bag lunch to our shelter guests who will
sleep in the All Purpose Room and use the adjacent bathroom.
The rest of the building is off-limits. Shelter hours are from
7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. No guest will be on the premises or in the
neighborhood at any other time. The homeless men and women
in the CBS program are all carefully screened. No one is
admitted who is unable to comply with shelter rules, or who is
not committed to working with the problems causing their
homelessness. A paid CBS staff person is on the premises
during shelter hours.

Beth El members are needed to staffthe shelter: to serve
dinner, visit with guests and sleep over. Other tasks, including
transporting and laundering linens at the end of the week, need
volunteers as well. Donations ofsnacks, drinks and toiletries, as
well as contributions to the Social Action Fund to cover costs
associated with the program, are also welcomed. If you would

A mandatory organizational meeting for all volunteers
will be held on Tuesday, March l4th at 8:00 p.m. in the All

lranian Jewish Newcomers for Passover
Seders
The Community Resettlement Program (CRP) of UJA
Federation of Greater Washington needs families and individuals to host newly-anived Russian and lranian Jewish families or
individuals for the first and/or second Passover seder(s) on
Friday, April l4th and Saturday, April l5th. Due to the steady
stream of newcomers able to emigrate to our area, the need for
volunteers continues to rise.
According to Rachael Gray-Raff, Director, Community
Resettlement Program at UJA Federatioq "The outpouring of
support from the Jewish community is astounding more than
anyone could have imagined. I'm confident that community
support will continue to be strong and we will match or exceed
this year's volunteer needs."

Passover celebrates the Exodus ofthe ancient Israelites
from slavery in Eg5pt and is called "the season of our liberation."
The seder symbolizes unity among all generations of Jewish
people. It is especially poignant to recently anived emigres.
For therL the seder reflects a personal celebration oftheir own
modern day Exodus to fieedom.

Education Notes
Our Upper School students began their spring semester on
Tuesday, February l4th. Most of the first hour core ooursqs,
Relationships (8th grade), Jewish Literacy (lOth grade) continue with the second half ofthe curricula. The exception to this
istheninlh grade springrequirement: Tilftun Olam,Building A
Just Society is the new course. We repea.t the format of offering
elective courses for the second hour of study with a new list of
choices. Based on registratioq our most popular course is
Jewish Values Through Fikn, which is being taught by Rich
Ilandlofr. Other choicEs are Conversational Hebrew, Level I,
withRivkaDegani; Conversational Hebrew, Lwel tr, with Cheryl
Kreise4 Family History Video Project with Rachel Handlofr;
and Beit Din: The Jewish Pursuit of Justice, Honesty and
Fairness, with Suzin Glickman.
For the past two years at least 80% ofour students have
cgntinued past Bar/Bat Mtnah into the Upper School program.
They are experiencing a dramatielly different approach to
religious school than in their pre-adolescent years and a method
that appeals to their early adult maturity and their teenage world
view. The enrollment

elective courses, and the innovation has been greeted with

Tikkun Olam Projects for April
In the month of April, we will engage in two Til&un Olam
drives. We will collect Kosher for Pesach food to be distributed
to families served by the Jewish Seial Service Agency. This
will run from April 2nd - 9th, and a collection basket will be in
the hall outside the school office. This is a contemporary
fulfillment of the Pesach mitzvah, 'I,et all who are hungry come
andeat."
Our second project farand away the most enthusiastically
will be preparing meals for the homeless.
This effort is in cooperation with the Social Action Committee
and is the Religrous School's participation in the Congregation
Based Shelter program. School families will be contacted by

Friend," a dramatization based on the Diary of Anne Frank. Our
guests for this program will be students from Opration Understanding/DC, a project for improving relations between Jewish
and African-American communities.
Retreat
A new element has been added to further enrich the
Religious School program: a 4th - 6th grade Retreat Weekend.
Students will spend the weekend of Nday lgth - 2lst at Capital
Camps engaged in activities built around the theme'Into The
Wilderness." Planning is progressing exceptionally well, led by
a parents' committee co-chairedby Barbara HunviEandPhyllis
Solomon. With two days to the registration deadlinq we already
have more than 50 students signed up. In addition to the central
theme-based activities, students will participate in studentled
Shabbat services, sports and ga.mes, a team development course
(ropes course) and an evening social . Enthusiasm is high, and we
anticipate an excellent turnout for this retreat.
FacultyWorkshop
On Sunday, March 26th the Religious Schml faculty will
have their last United Synagogue sponsored workshop of the
year. The primary theme of the in-service will be Classroom
Management but aswith all oftheUSTEP seminars, the medium
is the message, and we will explore Pirke Avol Conservative
Judaism and other aspects of teaching. This will round out at
least 12 hours of in-service teacher training, an exceptionally
high degree of commitment especially in comparison to most

Forsake Me Not: a Multigenerational
Approach to Family Education
This past fall, the UJA Federation decided to take a new
approach to support member organizations by providing opportunities for groups to apply for grants for specific synagogue
progzuns. One of the areas of emphasis by the UJA was in
Family Education, where money would be provided to synagogues, on a cost-sharing basis, to hire professionals who would
help zupport estabtsh and run family education progrcms.
While UJA required that the program work out of an existing
Religious School, the purpse of the program was to make
Family Education a synagogue-wide affair.
In response to the RFP, Congregation Beth El submitted
a proposal to ask for support for a half-time family education
professional. Combined applications to UJA requested almost
$500,000 and about $ 105,000 was awarded. Beth El was lauded
for the quality of its application (as well as for another application that was not funded) and was awarded $12,500 to hire a
family educator for the first year, and additional money for two
more years. The "team" that put together our applications
included Leonard Bebchich Suzanne Bronheim, Linda Lipsott,
Louis Nagel and Arthur Popper.
The Famity Etlucation Program (FEP), as proposed to
UJA
is designed to conduct an educational program that reaches
beyond our core learning community, our Religious School
childreq to involve all congregation children as well as parents
and grandparents in a process that has increasingly come to exist
solety within the confines of the synagogue school, that of
transmitting and experiencing a Jewish way of life.

The goal ofourprognmwillbe to develop anexplicit and
organized family education program with a special
intergenerational fmus. The rationale for this goal is that
historically, the family has been the mainstay for transmission
of Jewish traditions from one generation to another. However,
with the mobility of recent generations where children often
move great distances from parents and grandparents and the
assimilation of families into the secular community, multigenerational interactions have been diminished significantly in
much of the Jewish community. As a consequence, nrany
parcnts do not have the knowledge and skills to pass to their
children. This has had a significant impact on the practice of
Judaism and its traditions by younger generations, and it has also
isolated older generations from their important role in preserving the Jewis.h family and Judaism's traditions and history.
TheFEPwill give special attention to this critical issueby
emphasizing programs that bring together children, parents and
grandparents of related families and" even more importantly,
multiple generations of our synagogue family who lack a generational link to families in the community.
The Family Education Director will l) work with the
Religious School in firther developing and enhancing itsfamity
education programs, 2) develop new programs in family education with an emphasis on multigenerational interactions and
learning, 3) coordinate and provide expertise in family-related
education programs to other Beth El groups and work with these
grcups to enhance their programs and incorporate a multigenerational approac\ and 4) serve as an "advisor" to Beth El
families who wish to increase their Jewish involvement or
knowledge.
In summary, theFamily EducationDirector at Congrega-
tion Beth El will serve as the focal point of significantly
increased and coordinated programming in the area of family
education. This is an area ofeducation that is strongly desired
by a large portion of our congregants. The progam will be
unique in that it will provide special programming aimed at all
generations to address a significant problem in the Jewish
community -- the loss of family identity and communication
that is a product of the late 20th century. While the programs
that we develop and sustain will not always emphasize all
generations, the driving goal in all programs will be to see ifthis
theme can be incorporated as often as possible so that our most
priceless treasure, the traditions and heritage of our generations, gets passed along and preserved for future generations
thatwill be part of Beth El.
