You must not cook a kid in its mother’s milk.” The famous baby goat and its mother—this is the prohibition against mixing meat with milk, as Rashi tells us. This mitzvah is repeated two other times in the Torah. Rashi tells us that we have to read these three in tandem and explains: “it is repeated three times in the Torah—once regarding eating, once regarding benefit from it, and once prohibiting the cooking of it.” We can’t eat the cheeseburger, we can’t cook the cheeseburger and believe it or not, we can’t even own stock in the cheeseburger company. This is more than thinking about what we put in our mouth—this is about a sensitivity to the balance of life and death and how we orient to the worlds. The Torah is subtle in its prohibitions and it takes rabbis such as Rashi to read between the lines and help us to understand the Oral Torah nestled within. -AO Rabbi Alexander Davis ● Rabbi Avi Olitzky ● Cantor Audrey Abrams ● Rabbi Kassel Abelson (Emeritus) ● Cantor Neil Newman (Emeritus) Condolences to our congregants (members in bold): Marilyn Chanen and Charlene Plitman on the loss of their brother, Martin Fiterman Steve Beugen on the loss of his mother, Zelda Beto UPCOMING AT BETH EL For more information on these programs and events, call the Beth El office at 952-873-7300, or visit www.bethelsynagogue.org. Because of privacy restrictions, the synagogue is not notified by area hospitals when they have Jewish patients nor do we always get immediate information regarding a death. Time is Running Out to Order Wine! Kosher wine is readily available here in the Twin Cities. But GOOD and AFFORDABLE Kosher wine is a little harder to come by. And now we're making such wines available, but time is running out, so place your order BY SUNDAY NIGHT AT MIDNIGHT! Especially in advance of Passover, our selection and prices are really better than any you'd find in the Twin Cities, and more than that, because half of the proceeds go to the synagogue, you'll be giving a bit of tzedakah as well. Orders will be available for pickup from Beth El the Thursday, Friday and Sunday before Passover. Place your order at: www.besyn.org/wine A portion of the sales support our shul.
