Rashbam suggests that this implies stealing from the Temple treasury, while Rashi thinks it means taking anything sacred for personal beneficial use. Regardless, taking that which is holy and using it for base personal advancement is prohibited. How do we do the opposite, that is, using that which is holy to better ourselves specifically because it is connected to God? We do things like lighting the Shabbat candles, shaking the lulav, eating matzah during the Seder, all as expressions of cleaving to God, and we better ourselves by doing so (spiritually, mentally and emotionally). However, if we do these acts only for base personal gain, we are no greater than the object itself, and have significantly reduced the holiness—both of the object and of our present state of being. -AO Rabbi Alexander Davis ● Rabbi Avi Olitzky ● Cantor Audrey Abrams ● Rabbi Kassel Abelson (Emeritus) ● Cantor Neil Newman (Emeritus) UPCOMING AT BETH EL For more information on these programs and events, call the Beth El office at 952-873-7300, or visit www.bethelsynagogue.org.
