March / April 2013 Nissan / Iyar 5773 Temple B’Nai Israel Rabbi’s Corner: Temple Board Sally Cannon, President 231-547-0817 Gus Paz, Vice-President 231-347-5131 Tom Johnson, Treasurer 231-487-1661 Carol Ellstein, Mishpacha 231-525-9250 Bev Holden 231-535-2455 Lori Katzman 231-547-6909 I found a dust bunny hiding in the corner. And it was a big one. Passover and spring cleaning just seem to go together. Preparing for Passover means getting every crumb of bread out of your house, so it makes sense to roll up your sleeves and get some real cleaning done while you're at it! This is also good time to turn some attention to all the corners of our lives. Spring brings new life and new energy, and most of us feel invigorated by it. We usually direct this new energy into our jobs, our homes, or our hobbies, but why not direct it inward? The Jewish year is halfway over, and that means there's still time to become all that we hoped for last Yom Kippur. We're leaving Egypt, so be sure to keep a wide enough space in your life to receive the Torah anew. Chag Sameach! I had a nice chat with Brent Gutmann this morning, who shared with me that he has accepted a Rabbinic position in Auckland, New Zealand. He will be the sole rabbi at Beth Shalom, a "progressive temple", which is how they refer to Reform Temples in many places outside of the US. He, Jill, and Daria will be moving to New Zealand in July, and they are excited about this opportunity. I believe the position is for 2-3 years. Brent also wanted me to remind everyone that we are all invited to his ordination on June 8, 2013 at HUC. If you are planning on going, please let him or Jill know. Feel free to drop Brent a line to offer your congratulations. I know Brent will make a superb Rabbi! Both of these volumes are used during services. The temple obtained 40 siddurs last year, but the Chumash are old and in need of replacement. It would be terrific if we could replace and restock the Chumash in time for the Summer worship season. A $50 donation allows the congregation to purchase a Chumash. The donors’ name along with an honorarium, if requested, will be placed in a book plate in the volume. Please help in this effort by utilizing the clip-out form to the right. Thank you.
