One of the greatest mitzvot is to enable others to perform mitzvot, those
sacred acts which propel us to godly living and the world towards godly
ends. Those who make God’s home a “house for all people,” birth
blessings beyond count and are themselves seven-fold blessed.
Temple B’nai Or
From Rabbi Rossoff….
A Rabbi tells of a visit he paid to an elderly member of the congregation
who had come to live with her son and his family. Their house was
simply stunning! It was clear that a great deal of thought and substance
had gone into decorating it inside and out. The woman greeted the
Rabbi with warmth and was anxious to show him her room. Walking
through the house, the Rabbi noted the tasteful furniture and
impressive works of art. Entering her room, however, the Rabbi was a
bit surprised at how sparsely it had been furnished: a bed, a dresser
with pictures of her late husband, children and grandchildren, a picture
of flowers on the wall, and in the corner, a table cluttered with small
boxes. As the Rabbi looked closer, he saw that the boxes were pushkes,
tzedakah boxes of various colors and sizes. This one was marked
“JNF;” that one said “Synagogue;” another was for “UJA,” while
another bore the words “Soup Kitchen.” There must have been a dozen
pushkes neatly arranged on the table, each one a receptacle for
donations to causes close her heart. As the Rabbi looked at all the
tzedakah boxes, the woman pointed to them and proudly said, “How’s
THAT for interior decorating?”
Clearly, the woman knew the beauty of giving. She felt the inspiration
and fulfilment that comes from giving to institutions which convert her
donations into sacred work. She knew that the mitzvah of tzedakah
(righteous giving) is one of the pillars of our faith, and the foundation
upon which Jewish communal life – especially synagogue life - is
based.
We at Temple B’nai Or know that, too. I am – we all are - so very
grateful to those who have decorated our Temple with their willingness
to go “above and beyond” to support our holy work. Each of us for
whom TBO is an important part of our lives benefits from their largehearted commitment to continuing Jewish life through Temple B’nai
Or. To them we say rav todot (many thanks) and extend our heart-felt
appreciation!
Rav todot as well to all the wonderful Temple staff members with
whom I have been blessed to work. And as we celebrate the special
anniversaries of Temple Educator David Iskovitz and Pre-School
Director Jennie Rubin, I reflect on their decades of devotion,
dedication, creativity, passion, compassion, and friendship with an
abiding sense of gratitude and love. We are all blessed in so many ways!
With thanks to all,

From the President…
Kehilah is a sacred community. Our community is the people of our
congregation. The sacred is the act of making things godly, filled with
blessings and thanks. I have much to be thankful for.
Todah Rabbah to:
 My wife and daughters, for supporting me to serve as your president;
 Each member of our Congregation, for your participation and support
in all necessary ways to make our community strong;
 Our Clergy: Rabbi Rossoff for your counsel and support during the
many moments we have shared over the past 25 years, and in this
special year; Cantor Dadoun-Cohen for your leadership in song and
deed;
 Each and every member of the Board of Trustees, who lead with drive and steady determination
through this important period of change and growth;
 Each and every member of the Rabbinic Transition Task Force, with whom I shared and
learned much while completing this sacred selection responsibility;
 Our Executive Director, Wendy Gottsegen, for your dedicated stewardship of the office, our
Kehilah program, events and initiatives;
 David Iskovitz and Jennie Rubin, who continue to masterfully lead our Religious School and
PreSchool programs;
 Our Office Staff of Susan, Barbara, and Kim, who are the engine that makes things go at
Temple;
 Jamale, Pablo, John, Derek, and Jonathan, for all their hard work and professionalism they
bring to keep our temple running, neat and clean.
Keith Barbarosh, President
Why I Volunteer…
David Fields is approaching “super volunteer” status at Temple
B’nai Or. He is the co-chair of the Marketing Committee, served
on the Dues Restructuring Committee, served on the Rabbi
Transition Task Force, plays on the Softball Team, and supports
his wife, Jessica Temlock-Fields, in her capacity on the board of
trustees and a teacher in our Religious School. David always
raises his hand to help, so we thought we’d ask him:
Q. Why do you Volunteer at Temple?
A. I volunteer because TBO feels like my second home. I want to
do all I can to expand our family and help us reach our full
potential. We have so many members with great experience and
backgrounds and I want to put my expertise to good use. It's a great way to connect our daily life to
the traditions of our Temple.
Q. What advice would you tell others that are interested in getting more involved?
A. The more you get involved with TBO the more you feel a connection and vested interest in
seeing our Temple reach its goals. You get to work with great people and never feel like you're
doing something alone. Everyone understands that you have other time constraints, and there's
never any pressure to do more than your time allows.
David Fields, Volunteer

In Gratitude for 20 Years of Service at
Temple B’nai Or
I have known David ever since I began my Jewish
learning at Temple B’nai Or, around 13 years ago.
My memories from those times, while limited, fall
in line comfortably with the friend and mentor I
have grown to know along my personal journey,
Jewishly and individually. I remember it being
refreshing to have a “Principal” that was a whole
lot cooler than what I was accustomed to at public
school in Randolph. The Simpsons became
synonymous with Monday nights at Hebrew
School, Jewish rappers came in from Brooklyn to
perform on the B’nai Or Bima, and the list goes
on.
Creating a Jewish curriculum for impossible-toplease teens is no easy task, and I am very grateful
for all that David has done to tackle it. Being
Jewish in the 21st Century in America means many
different things. My memories from the latter
years in my post-Bar Mitzvah days attest to the
dozens of diverse activities that were meant to
showcase Reform Judaism’s constant adaptation.
Coming to Temple became an opportunity for
Jewish kids from all different social circles to
come together and escape whatever was stressing
or bothering them in their respective
hometowns. My peers and I internalized the
importance of community, and these ideals have
continued to drive us forward on our journeys.
Thank you David for your commitment and
passion, it has not gone unnoticed!

A Decade of Loving Service to
Early Childhood Education
10 Years of Love and Learning
During Mrs. Rubin’s 10 years as Pre-School
Director, we have spent 13 amazing, overlapping
school years with her. Our parents tell us that
our time in Pre-School gave us a big head start
for kindergarten and our Jewish education. But
what we remember are the hugs, the laughs, the
new things we learned, the songs we sang, and
the great friendships we made. Because of Mrs.
Rubin we were excited for school every day. She
welcomed us whether we were smiling, singing,
crying, or anything in between. She dried our
tears, held our hands, and always listened to our
stories about everything from vacations and
holidays to a really exciting game on the
playground. On Fridays, Mrs. Rubin taught us
about Shabbat. She emphasized the importance
of being thankful, taking care of each other, and
taking care of the world. But it really was the
little things – the extra hug, the moments of
undivided attention, the words of encouragement
– that made our years in Pre-School truly
unforgettable. Mrs. Rubin and her teachers will
always be a part of our warmest memories. All of
our friends, and the hundreds of other students
whose lives she changed, are better for having been her students. Mommy told us that Mrs. Rubin also helped
her and Daddy with so many parenting questions, milestones, and challenges. We never knew how much they
learned from Mrs. Rubin or how many times Mommy went to her for hugs and advice. Mrs. Rubin’s kindness
and caring have made the Pre-School a magical place for the last decade. Thank you, Mrs. Rubin, for
everything you have done for our family, the Pre-School and Temple B’nai Or.
Love,
Gabriel, Natalie, Oliver, and Julianne Rosenthal
P.S. Our mommy told us to tell you that Registration for the 15/16 School Year is now open, so if you know
anybody interested in the BEST PRESCHOOL EVER, have them call Mrs. Rubin.

The Rabbi Donald B. Rossoff Legacy Celebration
A Weekend to Honor 25 Years of Service and Friendship
May 1-3, 2015
Please mark your calendars and plan to be a part of the very special weekend that the Legacy Celebration
Committee has organized to celebrate and thank Rabbi Rossoff for his 25 years of service to our Kehilah.
There are many different ways to thank Rabbi and Fran, and wish them well. Attend one or all of the
services and events, volunteer to help with an event and/or make a tribute to Rabbi via the online Tribute
Journal that has been established. All the events take place at Temple.
We are pleased to announce that a scholarship fund has been established in Rabbi Rossoff’s name that
will assist children at Temple to be a part of NFTY or attend URJ Summer Camps – both programs that
are very meaningful to him. All proceeds from the Online Tribute Journal will be designated for this
fund.
We are very grateful for the outpouring of support and interest in making this weekend a reality. Please

Renaissance News
The Renaissance Group, like the Temple itself, is powered by its members. Therefore,
in this Todah Rabbah (“thanks a lot”) issue of the Or-acle, it is most appropriate that we
offer special thanks to those who have ‘gone above and beyond’ for so many years. Ted
Largman had the vision, and with the dedicated efforts of Charlotte Abberman, Mitzi
Szerlip, Anita and Jack Swotinsky, Bev Raffman, Fran Milberg, and Stuart and Barbara
Rayvid, the group is vibrant and strong as it enters its second quarter century.
Upcoming Spring Events Include:
 Sunday, March 15 – 10 AM breakfast and a program on The Art of Chocolate,
complete with samples!
 Wednesday, April 15 – noon luncheon and a discussion, led by Rabbi Rossoff, on the
thoughtful question: “Does one have to believe in God to be Jewish?”
 Wednesday, May 20 – noon luncheon and a program presented by Franzine PoznerEhrenberg, a Supervising Assistant Prosecutor with the Morris County Prosecutor’s
Office will discuss identity theft, including advice regarding scams and frauds.
 Wednesday, June 17 – noon luncheon and a special musical program presented by
our very own Temple and Renaissance members, Anita and Lou Gordon.
All programs are open to the Temple community and guests, and require reservations
and a small fee. Breakfast is $8.00 for Renaissance members, $12.00 for all others.
Luncheon is $13.00 for Renaissance members and $18.00 for all others. Contact Mitzi

From the Youth Group….
Shalom!
BOOTY has had an exciting few months. Todah Rabbah to everyone who participated in our Hanukkah Gift
Basket Fundraiser; it was a huge success. Also, thank you to everyone who came to our Parents’ Night Out.
We had a blast!
We had a great group of BOOTY members attend NFTY GER’s Winter Kallah in December. Everyone had a
fabulous time. The next NFTY GER event (9th-12th graders) will be from Feb 27 to March 1. Also, I am very
excited to announce that there will be another NFTY GER event, just for 6 th-7th graders from March 27thMarch 29th. It will be held at the URJ Kutz Camp. Registration is open for both events.
NFTY GER’s Spring Kallah is April 24-26, and 8th graders are invited. Finally, I am thrilled to share that the
BOOTY president, Melissa Anolick, and I will be attending NFTY Convention in Atlanta, Georgia along with
NFTY teens from all over the country in February.
It is never too late to join BOOTY, or attend an event. Our next event will be Laser Tag on February 22, please
contact me for a flyer. Our next general meetings are February 23, March 23, and April 27. Look for other fun
things to come in the next few months: Creative service, shul in, hiking, and more!
