The Assassination of Fred Hampton:
How the FBI and Chicago Police
Murdered a Black Panther
by Jeffrey Haas
Join us as Valerie Jackson,
award-winning host of NPR
station WABE’s Between the
Lines, interviews this Atlanta
native, author and attorney
who represented the injured
survivors of this deadly police
raid.
It’s 7:00 am on December
4, 1969 and attorney Jeff
Haas is in the Monroe Street
police lockup in Chicago,
interviewing Fred Hampton’s
financé. Only four hours earlier, she was lying in
bed next to Hampton when the police burst into their
apartment. She is still in her nightgown, describing
how the police pulled her from the room, as Fred lay
unconscious on their bed. She heard one officer say,
“He’s still alive.” She then heard two shots. A second
officer said, “He’s good and dead now.” She looks at
Jeff and asks, “What can you do?”
The Assassination of Fred Hampton is attorney Jeff
Haas’s personal account of the legal saga including
an eighteen-month trial in which he and People’s
Law Office partner Flint Taylor pursued Hampton’s
assassins, ultimately prevailing over FBI stonewalling
and unlimited government resources bent on hiding
the conspiracy that led to Hampton’s death.
Books will be available for purchase.

MAC Report
From January through August, Midtown Assistance Center assisted in 3,983 emergency situations totaling $337,270. The
results of our most recent rent follow up showed that 88% of the clients who received rental assistance remained stably housed
6 months later. Thank you to our Temple MAC volunteers: Sara Hene, Martha Miller, Andrea Salwen & Erin Wolf who gave
over 100 volunteer hours in July and August.
Thank you to Our Temple Family
Thanks to our fabulous congregants for this hugely successful food collection. A special thanks to everyone who helped
unload the truck, sort and stack the groceries at MAC. Our delivery will last until January.

A Super Special Thanks to Ken Prager & Todd Slutzky, who spent hours of time at MAC organizing the set up and bins to
prepare for the food delivery & never left until everything was stored and packaged. You are our “Superstars.”

Thank you to all of our hard workers who helped to unload the truck, sort and stack the
thousands of pounds of groceries.
Everyone helps!
Zaban Couples Center
Zaban Couples Center is open to serve homeless couples in Atlanta for the 26th year! As in the past, we anticipate all
rooms will be full until closing on April 30. The program and array of services we are offering our residents continues
to expand. Especially noteworthy is our receipt of $108,000 over the next 24 months from HUD; part of the Homeless
Prevention and Re-housing Program (HPRP) which will help us to improve our impact by providing much needed case
management and a short term financial housing subsidy to eligible couples to help them become stabilized.
The biggest challenge facing Zaban Couples Center this year may well be the threat of the H1N1 flu virus. The
following precautions are being taken to help protect our residents and volunteers: hand sanitizing stations will
be mounted throughout the facility, masks are available for volunteers should they be more comfortable wearing
one as well as for residents who might be ill, a separate dining area will be designated for ill residents so they are
isolated from the rest of the population, tablecloths have been replaced with disposable place mats, tables, chairs,
microwave, etc. will be cleaned daily, and residents have been encouraged to obtain a regular flu vaccine. We have
also been in touch with the Metro Atlanta Task Force for the Homeless in an effort to find a facility that will shelter sick
residents during the daytime hours. A special thank you to Phyllis Kozarsky and Eliot Arnovitz for providing the hand
sanitizing stations that are central to this effort.

From the Study of
Rabbi Steven Rau
As the October holidays come
to an end, American Jews are
doubly rewarded. Just as we
finish taking down our sukkot
(our outdoor celebrations of the
fall harvest holiday), we begin
preparing for the winter and our
indoor celebration of the harvest.
Thanksgiving is our second
chance to celebrate our blessings
around the table with our families
and friends. Just in case life was too busy the first time
(with children going back to school, preparing for the
holidays, etc.), we are given another opportunity to gather
together and thank God.
Jews have a particular connection to Thanksgiving in
that we share the name. In Genesis 29, after Leah gives
birth to another son, she says, “‘This time I will thank the
Lord.’ Therefore she named him Judah.” In this, the Torah
makes a play upon the root of the word ‘thanks’ (yud,
dalet, hey) with the name Yehudah (yud, hey, vav, dalet,
hey). In essence, Jews (Yehudim, from Judah) are given
the name ‘thanks.’ Thus the essence of our people is to
give thanks, and we show it to God through prayer and
through action.
When we study Torah, we are taught that there are no
extraneous words. Our Sages teach that if the Torah ever
repeats a word twice in a row, there must be a reason. In
most cases, they explain that each of the two repeated
words have a distinct meaning. Looking at the double
celebration of Thanksgiving for American Jews, can we
also find meaning in both? Perhaps one can be used
to help us mark the sacred time and the second to help
others mark sacred time.
Sadly in America over 17% of our population is living in
a food insecure household. Even more surprising, over
22% of Israelis are living in food insecure homes. As
we approach the second celebration of Thanksgiving
this year, let’s commit ourselves to eradicating these
numbers. As we prepare to stock up our homes with food
for the holiday let us seek out ways to make a difference
in hunger. Did you know that in addition to Operation
Isaiah (the High Holy Days food drive) The Temple has
at least one food barrel for the Atlanta Community Food
Bank in our building at all times? If each Temple family
were to bring one can of food with us each time we come
to Temple, we could fill up hundreds (instead of just a
couple) of food barrels each year. Our impact on hunger
in Atlanta would be enormous. But if we are not ready to
make that great commitment, perhaps we can make our
giving a little smaller, but seasonal—in the fall bring bags
of food for Operation Isaiah, the winter participate in or
give to the Hunger Walk, in the spring donate to MAZON
(A Jewish Response to Hunger), and in the summer,
Food Bank barrels.
So as we make our preparations for Thanksgiving this
year, let us honor our second celebration by sharing of
our own harvests.
My family joins in wishing you a joyous and generous
Thanksgiving holiday.
