Looking At, Not
Through, The Window
Rabbi Alan Lew talks about a time when he
was hiking with his friend. They were in a
nature preserve on Martha's Vineyard. The
storm came up and they took refuge in a
shack with a big picture window. He was
looking out the window in the rain at the
birds and plants but none of that was really
very interesting. His friend said, “Don't look
at the window rather at the window itself”.
The world of the window with it smudges
and tiny insects and reflections of the light
contained a universe in of itself, a place with
a life of its own.
When we come to the High Holy Days and think about repenting and examining our
lives, we have to shift our gaze from the world itself to the window or lens through
which we see it. That window is the filter through which we look at the world - our
consciousness or perspective or life philosophy or attitude. Because the lens through
which we look at life makes us see the world, differently the first step in examining
our lives is to look at that lens itself.
Do we view the world as dark, a place of potential trouble, heartbreak and violence?
Or do we see it as the domain of love, peace, kindness and goodwill? Usually, when
our perspective on the world is negative it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy and
brings more bad events. Often, if we can see the universe as, in general, a good place,
that attitude affects the world around us positively and brings and allows us to notice
love and uplifting moments. We have to work hard on avoiding the former and doing
the latter, supported by our friends and loved ones.
From our family to yours, may the window through which you look at the world this
year reflect the pure light and all the goodness and kindness that is out there.

Dear Congregants,
August was a busy, but crazy month. The crazy part was the
Las Vegas Desert Suzuki Institute using the majority of the
campus for a week. The good news is they have already
agreed to rent the campus next July.
The classroom painting at Shenker Academy is complete.
We will be doing some additional renovations and repairs
prior to the start of classes. We added additional electric
circuits to the Event Center to prevent tripping the circuit
breakers.
We are ahead of schedule regarding High Holy Days preparation. However, there is still a
considerable amount of work to be done. We are ahead of last year for receipt of
membership renewal packages.
The last half of August was primarily spent getting ready for Religious School classes and
the fall semester for Shenker Academy. There are a number of Shenker classes that are
full. Prospective students are put on a waiting list.
We have some new committee chairpersons. If you are interested in being on their
committees, please contact them directly.
Memberships: Jeff Maren and Heath Bettelman
Senior Social: Myrna Brown
Programming: Jackie Kolner
The programming and fund raising committees are making plans for events which will
take place throughout the fiscal year. More on that in a later article
Looking forward to High Holy Days in October.
Until next month.
Shalom,
Les Sherman

From the Desk of Heather Klein
The Fall is definitely my favorite
time of year. Even though only a
few trees in the desert change
colors, my husband Eli and I
still have enjoyed going to have
cider, doughnuts and apple picking at the Gilcrease Farm and
Orchard. I don’t remember having something like that when I
was growing up here, but I am
happy to have it now. It always
reminds me of the hay rides I took through the orchards as a
kid in New York. Hopefully you will all get out and try
something new this year in the fall.
At Temple Sinai, late August and September are the start of
a busy new year. Lots of new and returning students as well
as many families and friends back from their summer vacations or getaways. I look forward to an exciting start to our
year with Friday Night Live returning, as well as welcoming
back our favorite musicians from the service. We are also
excited to have our partnership with Congregation Ner Tamid growing as we prepare to continue Shabbat after Dark services for young adults in the community as well as other
coming events.
I think it is crucial as we go into this upcoming year to support Temple Sinai events, and to also look out at the Las Vegas valley at the vast amount of events, art and culture that
are now a part of our ever changing landscape. It is so exciting to see how far we have come from when I first moved
here as a kid 26 years ago, until now. I can’t wait to see what
is to come this year as we begin this Fall.
Warmly,
Heather
From the Desk of Dr. Sharon Knafo
HOLIDAYS AT THE
RELIGIOUS SCHOOL
As we began the New Year, I want
to share with you some of our
wonderful plans for our students
during the upcoming Holidays.
Students will learn about the special
traditional customs, and write in
Hebrew some of the holiday words
(Shofar, Dvash, Tapuach, Ne’ila
etc.) as they gain more knowledge about the meaning of
these holiday terms. In some different classrooms, students will learn the stories, traditions and customs unique
to each of the holidays. The students in Kindergarten,
First, and Second grade will help decorate the Synagogue’s
Sukkah right before the Holiday of Sukkot. These lesson
examples are true reflections of our Religious School educational philosophy at Temple Sinai: we encourage much
creativity and joyful learning in and out of the classrooms.
We are also working on exciting new Tikkun Olam
(“Healing the World”) projects in cooperation with the
Social Action Committee. The first project will be dedicated to the Baby’s Bounty, an organization that provides essential clothing and gear to babies born into low-income
families for their health, safety and well-being. The second
project will be a collection of food items by grade level
throughout the year, and the third one will be the anticipated afternoon 3 Square volunteering TOGETHER with the
Temple’s congregants to emphasize cross generational effort of feeding the hungry in our community.
Wishing you L’Shanah Tovah U’Metukah,
Dr. Sharon Knafo
Education Director

Bar Mitzvah of Zachary Horowitz
Zachary Allen Horowitz will
be celebrating his Bar Mitzvah
at Temple Sinai on Saturday,
September 17, 2016. Zach was
born in Las Vegas, Nevada on
September 16, 2003. While
attending Staton Elementary,
Zach was part of the GATE
program, the Highly Gifted
program, and he participated in
the annual National Math
Kangaroo competition while
earning straight A’s throughout
his elementary years. Zach is currently a 7th grader at Sig
Rogich middle school. In his free time, Zach enjoys playing
lacrosse, soccer, and football; listening to music, computer
coding, video games, and spending time with his family,
friends and pets. Zach is also a member of The National
Junior Honor Society and was awarded the 2015-2016
Excellence in Mathematics award. Zach plans on joining
his school’s Robotics club and the Junior Varsity Quiz
Club, and aspires to one day become a Computer Engineer
or Video Game Designer.
Bar Mitzvah of Sammy Wax
Samuel Grant Wax is an avid
video game player. You can
usually find him playing Destiny
or Black Ops 3 on his XBox
with his friends. Sam also likes
to sleep a lot. He can sleep
more than the average bear. His
baby sister Vivienne likes to
tickle him to wake him up. He
also has an 8 year old sister
named Ellie and a 6 year old
brother named Frankie. He
enjoys going to the pool with
his siblings.
When not playing video games, Sam enjoys watching
YouTube and reading anything by Rick Riordan.
Sam is very sensitive to community issues in Las Vegas,
such as the homeless situation. He feels that it is
everyone's responsibility to help others when they can. For
his project, Sam delivers sandwiches and water to the
homeless people he sees panhandling. He makes the
sandwiches himself and tries to package them with a
healthy snack of fruit or vegetables. Sam started this
project several years ago when the family had a lot of
turkey leftovers after Thanksgiving. He tries to deliver
sandwiches at least once a month and several times during
the holidays.
Sam's favorite movie would be Dead Pool (if his mother
would allow him to watch it, but not until he is 13) and his
favorite current band is Imagine Dragons. He likes the
Detroit Lions and the San Francisco 49ers and collects
sport team signs and automobile vintage signs for his
bedroom walls.

From Your Men’s Club
From Your Sisterhood
Our first meeting on August
21st, was well attended and
productive. We received many
great suggestions and will
attempt to incorporate some
in the plans for this year. We
have changed the date of our
“Paid Up Membe rship
Luncheon”, as the month of
October is chock full of
holidays. On September 25th
at 12:00 p.m., in room “C”, in the Event Center we
will have lunch and a really fun program. It is most
important that you RSVP, as we must prepare lunch for
all attendees. We are looking forward to seeing many
of you.
Shalom chaverim! Hello my friends.
November 3rd through 6th is the “Women of Reform
Judaism’s Pacific District Convention” to be held here
in Las Vegas. We are excited that our city has been
chosen to host this event. Women from the Pacific
District, which encompasses the entire west coast, New
Mexico, Arizona and Nevada will be celebrating the
installation of the next regional president, attending
learning seminars and of course having fun in Las
Vegas. If you think you might be interested in
participating, please contact me. We are going to be
working with the women of Ner Tamid’s Sisterhood to
make this a very successful convention.
September: Our next breakfast will be on Sunday September 11th
at 10:00AM. We will welcome back our neighbor and friend,
Imam Aziz Eddebarh, as our guest. The Imam will speak to us
about American Muslims. Remember, reservations are a
MUST; please RSVP to me at [email protected].
Sisterhood is partnering with the Temple and Men’s
Club to compete at the JCC Barbeque on October
30th. This is a community wide activity which will be
held at Temple Beth Shalom. Volunteers will be
needed to decorate our booth and to distribute food
samples. Do you have a special brisket or beef rib
recipe? Please share! A committee will decide which to
prepare. This is a competition and the prizes are
significant.
Gift shop had a “Chanukah in August” sale last month,
which went well. This month we are putting all picture
frames on sale. We will also have a counter with
different special sale items each week. Come visit and
check out our constantly changing inventory.
B’shalom,
Marge Nordell
Well, September is upon us and that
means we are in the Hebrew month of
Elul, the lead-in to our High Holy Days.
We are told to use the month of Elul to
prepare for the solemnity of Rosh
Hashanah and Yom Kippur, the joy of
Sukkot and Simchat Torah. We mark
each day of Elul with a blast, tekiah!,
from the shofar to remind us of the
upcoming days.
Men’s Club cannot give you a daily blast from the shofar, but we
can give you a weekly e-blast to help you prepare for our upcoming
events. Watch for our Men’s Club notices in your weekly on-line
announcements. Here is a preview for the next three months …
October: Our October breakfast is scheduled for Sunday October
9th Our 2nd Annual Sushi & Saki in the Sukkah Night. Saturday
October 22nd World class sushi, prepared by one of the Las Vegas
valley’s best sushi chefs.
November: A NEW and exciting event is set for Saturday
November 12th; Men’s Club will present an Israeli Kosher Wine
tasting evening. Wines from some of the best boutique wineries in
Israel can be sampled. Our November breakfast is set for Sunday
November 13th.
The editors of the Shofar have limited me to only 350 words for
my monthly column. (And I just used 16, now 25 of them!) I
wanted to highlight the remaining MC Directors; but I’ll have to
settle for spotlights!
Isaac Cohen, Renato Ritter, David Shapiro, and Brian Williams
round out the Men’s Club Board. They each bring experience,
leadership, and dedication to our work. They are prime examples
of turning potential energy into kinetic energy!
Join us for as many Men’s Club events as you can.

wages, and more.

Personal Tribute Cards
Have you seen the personal tribute cards? If not, they are
available in our Sisterhood Gift Shop. Please stop and
take a look. These cards match our standard tribute cards
but are used to send personal notes. They allow you to
convey your personal sentiments to family and friends
while still indicating to them that a donation was made in
their honor to the Temple Sinai General Fund. The cards
are available in 7-packs for $36.00. They are also available
by calling Dorothy Cohen (702-228-7040) or Phyllis
Feigenson (973-525-7799). Talk to the ladies or stop in at
the Gift Shop. You will be happy you did.
From your Ritual Committee
The Ritual Committee is your liaison to our clergy –
Rabbi Malcolm Cohen and Soloist Heather Klein.
If you have thoughts and feelings about Ritual matters here at Temple Sinai – both positive and negative – and you don’t feel comfortable speaking directly to Rabbi or Heather, the Ritual
Committee is the place where you will be heard.
But if you do want to register a thought, you must
‘own’ your thought. That is, you cannot make an
anonymous comment or complaint. We will respect
your confidentiality, if you so choose, but we will
need a way to get back you.
Talk to any member of the Ritual Committee,
our names are listed below. OR you can contact
Les Gilbert, the Committee Chair, via e-mail at
[email protected]

Lifelong Learning At Temple Sinai
Temple Sinai is a warm and welcoming Reform Jewish community engaged in lifelong learning, social justice, and soulful worship.
Lifelong Learning (Torah) – Wherever you find yourself, we want to help you get to the next stage of your Jewish journey.
We offer formal and informal opportunities for learners to find genuine meaning and answers to keenly felt moral questions and personal issues within the Jewish tradition.
You will notice that we have a wonderful range of events from stand-alone events to three-session mini-courses to a two-year in- depth
study. For this congregation, the social experience of learning is extremely important alongside the content of our study. We hope that
you will deepen your connections to our heritage and each other as you move to the next stage of your journey.
