Botticelli deliberately misproportioned Venus and gombrich notes that the figure emerging from the half shell is more beautiful for her flaws: "the unnatural length of her neck, the steep fall of her shoulders..." the painter's Venus is less correctly drawn than his predecessors, but "they enhance the impression of an infinitely tender and delicate being." the great artist fashioned flaws to create a legendary effect. we are familiar with the idea of distortion augmenting beauty. How often do we recognize that the very imperfections in another endear us to them, draw our hearts in the way that an icy ideal could never do? we beat our hearts in recognition of those flaws and know that we can love and forgive each other in spite of them. when we hear the lyrics, "my funny valentine...your looks are laughable, unphotographable, but you're my favorite work of art" we know what lyricist Hart meant: a seeming shortcoming beguiles. "Lord" cries out the psalmist, "you have examined me and know me" (psalm 139). to be known is to understand that faults need not always be cause for estrangement, but can be part of the portrait, one with steep fall shoulders and wayward hearts, that draw us to one another. On rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, we remember our flaws as we celebrate our community. For more information call 212-792-2829 or visit www.ajws.org/studytours keeping Our Community Strong the High Holy Days bring together our extraordinary community in friendship, joy and prayer. Our souls are inspired as we hear the sounds of the shofar. these days of awe emphasize spirituality, morality and holiness. the High Holy Days are also days of happiness because they serve as the days of reconciliation between individuals and an opportunity to become closer to god through teshuvah. when we celebrate the Neilah service together to end Yom Kippur, we share the feeling of joy as one community. For our community, the Kol Nidre Appeal is our annual fundraising campaign. Just as school tuition does not cover all operating expenses, our membership dues only cover a portion of our expenses. the temple relies on your Kol Nidre donations to meet its current financial needs and to secure the temple’s long-term financial stability. Our lay leaders and professional staff are diligently working to improve the efficiency of temple operations and develop a long-range plan for the temple. the temple has immediate needs that cannot be met without your support. without increased financial support, it will be very difficult to sustain the many programs, services and member benefits that Sinai temple offers. Your support provides grants for membership dues and tuition assistance for those who might otherwise leave our community. Your support also will provide the resources needed for immediate repairs to our aging facilities. Our goal is to have 100% of our members participate in the temple’s Kol Nidre Appeal. For those with the resources, we ask that you consider substantially increasing your donation this year. For those who have given in the past, we ask that you increase your donation by at least 10%. For those who have not previously participated, please make a donation this year. Your annual Kol Nidre donation to Sinai temple ensures that our community has a safe, holy place to worship, learn, celebrate, grieve and meet with each other. I wish you and your families a happy, healthy and inspiring New Year. L’shana Tovah Umetukah Joel Weinstein Welcoming... His newest book unpacks the moral dimensions of one of the most enigmatic cases of world war II. On the morning of November 7, 1938, a seventeen-year-old Jewish refugee, Herschel grynszpan, walked into the german embassy in paris and assassinated Ernst vom rath, a low-level Nazi diplomat. two days later, the third reich exploited the murder to inaugurate its long-planned campaign of terror against germany’s Jewish citizens—what became known as Kristallnacht.
