CLERGY MESSAGE
Our prayers on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur focus us on the many blessings that
make our lives worthwhile. This year, like last year, we will pray for the hope of health,
prosperity and happiness in the future. If we can achieve these in their own measure,
dayeinu, that would be enough!
Rabbi Miller
Temple Emanu-El
This year, like last
year, we will pray
for the hope of
health, prosperity
and happiness in
the future.
But even more than that, this pivotal time of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur should
spur us to see our lives and our world with new eyes. We are not destined to repeat our
past behaviors, which may have kept us unproductive, unhappy, and distant from loved
ones, from our best selves, and from God. The message of the New Year is that we
have the ability to make the year new, and to make our lives new and to see our world
renewed and our faith and commitments in a new light. We are not destined to repeat
the past. Instead, we have the spiritual ability to overcome our challenges and to create
the lives we want for ourselves, and the lives God wants for us.
On Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, we open the book of our lives to a NEW page,
a blank page. Pick up the pen and start writing. God is waiting for us to become the
blessings we pray to be.
Judi, Aaron and Lauren, Alana, Benjamin and Eliana Rose wish you the best for a
fulfilled and blessed New Year, 5776!
Rabbi Jonathan Miller
For All Of Us: A Prayer for the Days of Awe
I’m good at making resolutions, God. But I’m not very good at keeping them. I have been
hiding from my faults. I’ve been blaming others for my own mistakes. Help me, God, to
search my soul. I pray to You for strength. I want to live a meaningful life. I want to
comprehend my true promise. I want to understand why You have put me here. Teach
me to be honest with myself. Give me the courage to accept responsibility for my actions.
Grant me the humility to ask for forgiveness from those I have injured. Give me the
courage to repair relationships that pride has destroyed.
Cantor
Jessica Roskin
Fill me with the desire to change, God. Remind me that I have the power to remake my
life. You have filled me with enormous potential. Show me the person I have the potential
to become. Teach me how to realize all the gifts of my soul.
Be my guide, God; lead me to goodness, to joy, and to learning. Let this be a good
year-a year of health, a year of blessing, a year of love, a year of peace.
Amen.

Endowment Funds at Work
We greatly appreciate the support of the following endowment funds for providing enhancements for
our congregational family over the past few months:
• Honan Family Torah Study Fund for making a generous grant towards funding a special,
motivating training session with Rich Recht for our Religious School teachers and teaching assistants.
• Faye & Norris Friedman Social Enrichment Fund for
underwriting the fabulous 4th of July Havdalah service,
dinner and wonderful view of the fire works from atop of
the Temple’s parking deck.
• Cemetery Care Fund for providing the funding to
create and print the informative directory supplement,
which you should have received earlier this summer,
“Our Temple’s Guide To Jewish Funerals and Mourning Customs”.

Buggy Bucks: The Perfect Gift!
Please give Buggy Bucks gift cards to your friends,
family, and employees for any celebration or occasion.
It works like this: You purchase the Buggy Bucks gift cards for Publix or Piggly Wiggly. They work just
like any gift card, but these stores give us a discount on the total amount and those proceeds go directly to the Temple General Fund.
We take cash, checks, and can even transfer money directly from your bank! We can mail the Buggy Bucks directly to you or we can mail them directly to the recipient with your personalized card.
Now, what could be easier than that?
Call Loretta Newfield at (205) 933-8037 or [email protected] to order.
