Publication Title: Our Temple USPS Identification Issue Date: September 2015 Issue Number: 76 Statement of Frequency: Published monthly except forJune/July issue Organization: Temple Emanu-El Name/Address: 2100 Highland Avenue Sout Birmingham, AL 35205 4002 Layout and Design | Kim Graham Our Clergy 3 CLERGY MESSAGE Our prayers on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur focus us on the many blessings that make our lives worthwhile. This year, like last year, we will pray for the hope of health, prosperity and happiness in the future. If we can achieve these in their own measure, dayeinu, that would be enough! Rabbi Miller Temple Emanu-El This year, like last year, we will pray for the hope of health, prosperity and happiness in the future. But even more than that, this pivotal time of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur should spur us to see our lives and our world with new eyes. We are not destined to repeat our past behaviors, which may have kept us unproductive, unhappy, and distant from loved ones, from our best selves, and from God. The message of the New Year is that we have the ability to make the year new, and to make our lives new and to see our world renewed and our faith and commitments in a new light. We are not destined to repeat the past. Instead, we have the spiritual ability to overcome our challenges and to create the lives we want for ourselves, and the lives God wants for us. On Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, we open the book of our lives to a NEW page, a blank page. Pick up the pen and start writing. God is waiting for us to become the blessings we pray to be. Judi, Aaron and Lauren, Alana, Benjamin and Eliana Rose wish you the best for a fulfilled and blessed New Year, 5776! Rabbi Jonathan Miller For All Of Us: A Prayer for the Days of Awe I’m good at making resolutions, God. But I’m not very good at keeping them. I have been hiding from my faults. I’ve been blaming others for my own mistakes. Help me, God, to search my soul. I pray to You for strength. I want to live a meaningful life. I want to comprehend my true promise. I want to understand why You have put me here. Teach me to be honest with myself. Give me the courage to accept responsibility for my actions. Grant me the humility to ask for forgiveness from those I have injured. Give me the courage to repair relationships that pride has destroyed. Cantor Jessica Roskin Fill me with the desire to change, God. Remind me that I have the power to remake my life. You have filled me with enormous potential. Show me the person I have the potential to become. Teach me how to realize all the gifts of my soul. Be my guide, God; lead me to goodness, to joy, and to learning. Let this be a good year-a year of health, a year of blessing, a year of love, a year of peace. Amen. 4 Around Our Temple This is a great practical seminar for all ages: GRAFMAN LEGACY SEMINAR Beatles & Boomers Planning for “When I’m 64” Wednesday, Sept 2 • 5:00 p.m. • Temple Emanu-El Join us for Cocktails & Seminar ...kicked off with a few Beatles tunes led by the talented Bruce Downs (CPA) and Cantor Jessica Roskin.
