Dear Friends,
The sages taught:
I have learned much
wisdom
from
my
teacher, more from
my colleagues and the
Rabbi Gertman
most from my students.
A great pleasure of being a rabbi at Temple
Israel is learning from our youth. Whenever
I am with them I learn something new —
 a
new word, a new phrase, a new expression.
Your children keep me updated on the
latest lingo, the hottest fashion trends, and
they’ve even coerced me into taking the
occasional “selfie.” I am truly honored that
they are willing to share with me their lives
and their experiences. I am also constantly
amazed by how quickly their world moves.
They have constant and immediate access
to information. They have the universe at
their “literal” fingertips — between their
phones, tablets, computers — they are able
to Google facts faster than I can say them.
We, as Jewish educators, are challenged
to teach our students what cannot be
found on the Internet — values, morals,
community. This means that we need to give
our students experiences that help them
integrate Jewish values into their lives. We
need to speak to their hearts. As teachers
we also need to make sure that we are giving
our students a platform where they can
express their thoughts and beliefs, where
they can explore their world, and where
they can investigate new understandings
of Judaism.
As teachers we want to ensure that we
stimulate our students’ minds, motivate
their bodies, and ignite their souls. We want
them to know facts, but we also believe
in allowing them to form their own ideas.
We want them to feel that they belong to
the community, and actively participate
in tikkun olam, making this world a better
place. We want them to do this inside of
our walls and when they leave the Temple
Israel building. Our education team, led
by Andy Halper, works hard to ensure that
our educational model aligns with the everchanging world in which our students live.
This year, I am thrilled to use the
Twin Cities as our classroom to learn
Jewish texts and traditions with our
middle school students. We will learn how
Judaism commands us to treat our world,
our community and ourselves. We will do
this by traveling to an apple orchard, where
we will learn how the Jewish laws around
farming shape our commandment to give
tzedakah. We will do this by traveling to the
Twins stadium to learn how their emphasis
on sustainability aligns with Jewish laws to
protect our world. We will do this by spending
time with students from the Basilica, as
well as from the Darkenu program for
children with special needs. We will learn
as teens live — by doing, by interacting, by
experiencing. Jewish education, like all
education, is a lifelong endeavor. We are so
excited to be giving your children the tools
they need to continue along this path into
adulthood and beyond.
B’virkat Shalom—With Blessings of Peace,
Rabbi Jennifer S. Gertman

From the Ceremonial Groundbreaking
Views from the congregation and the community
“This project has been in movement for so many years, and it is happening because of
all the people who have been involved from the beginning. The volunteers, the staff—all
the congregants who are working on, and have worked on, all the many aspects of this
endeavor from strategic planning, to program planning, to facilities planning, and now to
fundraising and construction.” — Temple President Roberta Bonoff
“What we are doing is renewing Temple facilities and renewing Temple programs to
meet today’s world, to have better access to technology, and to give children and
parents with disabilities full access to our Temple building. Over and over we have
reaffirmed our commitment to the city. That is why we have named this campaign
L’Dor Vador, to strengthen our congregation and our community in the city of
Minneapolis for many generations ahead.” — Honorary Campaign Co-Chair Elliot Kaplan
“It is involvement in the community, and with the community, that is so important.
Rabbi Max Shapiro, one of my faith mentors, captured the essence of Temple Israel in
a 1964 sermon. He said: ‘Judaism instructs us to do more… For no community, no city,
no nation can long endure divided – half affluent, half despairing.’ Temple Israel has
always reached out to both communities. For that, I salute you. I congratulate you on
this historic and continuing work.” — Governor Mark Dayton
“Temple Israel is special because of the way it interacts with our neighborhoods. I see its
senior rabbi, Rabbi Marcia Zimmerman, leading this community on interfaith dialogue
and cross-cultural interactions. I see our neighborhoods’ children having the
opportunity to attend an early childhood education program that both breathes
spirituality and religion into their daily lives and also lets them be who they are. And I
see the way you are open to our community, from AA meetings in the building to SPCO
playing in the beautiful sanctuary.” — Minneapolis City Council Member Lisa Goodman
“The ceremonial bottle containing earth from the site of the Rabbi Max A. Shapiro
education building reminds us of those who came before us, on whose shoulders we
stand—and it reminds us, as well, of our children, our future, our gathering place, and
of being in the center of this vibrant and beautiful city we call Minneapolis, we call
home. When we come back a year from now, we will plant a beautiful tree with the
earth that we have taken from this site to link us with next year, the year after
that, 50 years from now, and 150 years from now—l’dor vador, from generation
to generation.” — Senior Rabbi Marcia A. Zimmerman

Permit #807
The Torah tells us time and again
that for Israel to become “a kingdom
of priests and a holy nation,” it is up
to us to create a society of justice,
equity, and love.
We invite you to join TICEH and
the work we are doing to create a
more just society by addressing the
problem of homelessness. We are a
committee dedicated to action and
we only meet as a committee once
or twice a year. There are many
opportunities for you to be as
involved as you want to be and
anything you do on this committee
is impactful.
2324 Emerson Avenue South
Minneapolis, MN 55405-2695
On any given night, over 10,000
Minnesotans live without a home and
46% of those are youth 21 years or
younger. People live without a home
because we as a society allow that
to happen. But there is something
members of Temple Israel can do
about homelessness!
The TICEH works to address the
social injustice of homelessness by
doing three things: 1) we educate
people about the problem of
homelessness, 2) we ask our state
legislators to pass laws that benefit
those without a home, and 3) we work
with organizations that provide direct
services to those living without a home.
