YEP Vítor Limeira - Rotary E
HELLO New Generation YEP Vítor Limeira THAT’S ME! Vítor Limeira New Generation I spent almost 3 months in Las Vegas as an Exchange Student of new Rotary Program called NEW GENERATION. In this presentation you will learn a bit more about the Program, My country and me! The Brazil that Everyone Knows: These are pictures of my country, the Brazil that everyone knows. Carnaval; The Amazon River/Region, Soccer and UFC fighters. The Brazil that Everyone Knows: Carmen Miranda - a Brazilian singer known in the United States for her marvelous Headwear (mostly fruit!) singing and movie roles. The Beaches - Copacabana Overview: Here are some facts and figures that represent Brazil . Fifth Biggest Country 200 Million People Only one Language Sixth Biggest GDP Bigger than all others Biggest City in Latin American Countries Together South Hemisphere (Size & GDP) Many Countries in one WE are a country of many geographical regions, climates, ethnicities and customs. Here are pictures of just of the traditional costumes worn by the different peoples and cultures of Brazil. A lot more than just the rain forest We also have many different forests and terrains, not to mention animals, plants and flowers. Amazonia Facts Biggest River (size and water volume) Biggest Fresh water reserv Biggest Preserved Rain Forest Biggest Fauna and Flora diversity Energy 80% comes from the Hydroelectric Brazil is also one of the world’s leaders in developing and using Hydroelectric Power and Biofuel. Energy Ethanol - Most sophisticated Biofuel Industry Energy 3º biggest energy company Recently Brazil discovered a huge reserve of oil under a very deep salt floor; the reserve is 6000 meters under the surface of the water. Due to this discovery, many nations have taken an “interest” in Brazil and the importance of Brazil in the world economy has taken a giant leap forward. Also, this discovery has resulted in a very large demand for trained engineers and petroleum workers and, Brazil, is now home to a large population of foreign workers. It is the goal of Brazil to train its own citizens to work this discovery and the resulting increase in other related areas. Pre-salt oil World’s Third Largest Aircraft Company Brazil is also the home of the world’s third largest aircraft company Embrae, is the largest producer of Iron Ore and Leads the world in the export of Beef, chicken, tobacco, oranges, sugar and coffee. Largest Producer of Iron ore Leading Exporter of A growing economy 3x more than the american 1.5 Million new jobs in 2010 World Recent and Future Events Brazil is also a very popular destination for world events. In 2011 we hosted the “World Games”. In 2014 we will host the World Cup – Soccer. In 2015 the Rotary International Convention and in 2016 the Olympics! World Recent and Future Events RI Convention 2015 Health Care System Health Care • While I was in USA, I heard a lot about the Obama health care system. It will be interesting to me how this plan unfolds. We have a similar system in Brazil – public health care which every Brazilian can use. The problem which has resulted in Brazil is that it is a very expensive system and although every city and state has a healthcare program some cannot provide quality care. Also in Brazil, we are allowed to continue our own personal insurance for healthcare and that is where the better treatment is still available Education In Brazil we not only have a free Healthcare system but education too including University! Constitution Brazilian Constitution • The Brazilian Constitution is very different from the USA constitution, Where the USA Constitution is short, the Brazilian Constitution is very very long, an actual book. Brazil has tried to put all of its federal laws into the Constitution whereas the USA has a separate federal code. One of the problems with the Brazilian Constitution, in my opinion, is that it tries to do too much and to provide more than it can for its citizens. Government Facts Democratic Republic Federalist 3 Separated Powers 27 states Similar to the United States of America, we are a democratic Republic with a centralized federal government with three branches – executive, legislative and judiciary. There are 27 states in Brazil. Government Facts Brasília Dilma Roussef Judiciary Curiosity Judges - Prosecutor - D.A. Justice System • .The Justice System in Brazil is also very different from the USA. Judges, District Attorneys, Prosecutors, Defense Attorneys are not appointed or elected positions. These positions are only attained after the individual has taken a very difficult test. If he/she passes the test with high enough marks, he or she will get one of these jobs. Only the best will qualify. • 25. Another huge difference is the jury system. In the USA all criminal trials there is a Constitutional Right to have a jury and there is also the opportunity to have a jury in most civil cases. However, in Brazil the only time an individual has a right to a jury trial is in a criminal case where the person is accused of murder or attempting to commit murder. Judiciary Curiosity Jury Rio Grande do Norte Now, I will Show you some facts about my state! It’s called RIO GRANDE DO NORTE, which translates to Big River of the North. Natal is the capital of Rio Grande Do Norte and is where I live with my family and go to University. It is a beautiful city on the coast with fabulous beaches and we have many tourists – like Las Vegas. Rio Grande do Norte FACTS Biggest inland oil producer Rio Grande do Norte FACTS Responsable for 95% of the salt produced in Brazil Rio Grande do Norte FACTS Biggest shrimp producer Rio Grande do Norte FACTS Stone painting Natal Natal has other important industries as it is the biggest inland oil producer in Brazil; produces 95% of the salt used in Brazil and is the largest shrimp producer. Natal Natal Natal Natal Natal • • Natal Here is a picture of the Municipal Park of Natal. The Buildings of this Park were designed by a very famous architect called Oscar Nyemaier. The same architect who designed the buildings of Brasilia, Brazil’s ultramodern capital. He is also known throughout Europe for his building designs. 39. Natal was founded on December 25, 1599 by the Portuguese which was then a Catholic Nation. Because of the founding date, the Portuguese named the City Natal which is the word for Christmas in Portuguese. Now for a personal comment, Brazilian Portuguese is very different from Portugal Portuguese as when I traveled to Portugal I could barely understand the natives of Portugal! This surprised me very much but taught me not to assume that just because someone speaks the same base language is it Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, Korean and even English, does not mean that each country does not have its own version of the language which incorporates all of its indigineous peoples and history. Natal Natal Natal at Christmas New Generation Now some facts about the New Generation Program and me! There were five Rotarians who were primarily involved in my NG Exchange. The three that facilitated the actual exchange were Emanuele Barreto and Reis Magos from Brazil and Jeremy Brooks in from the Rotary Club of Las Vegas Central. Jeremy’s dad is a District Governor of Arizona, USA. Okay, now that I could come, they had to find me a Host Family and arrange for my experience to be worthwhile – i.e. attending law classes at UNLV, trials, arbitrations, mediations, civic meetings and of course meeting people in their professional capacity and as just people! I had expected to live with more than one Rotarian family and assumed a couple with maybe some children. That was not to be; instead I lived for almost three months with your RECSWUSA Maureen McKinley and her beloved 130 pound Rottweiler, Paladin. Maureen is a retired attorney from So. California and thus she was able to relate to my going to law classes and trials and we could discuss at the end of the day what I had learned and what, if anything, had confused me. Maureen has a large house and had my pick of guest rooms, if you are ever in Las Vegas, give her a call and let her and Paladin welcome and spoil you! I say spoil as I arrived in Las Vegas with a 30 inch waist and left with almost a 32! – She is very good cook! My time with Maureen was also spent shopping (her least favorite thing to do, she was almost patient) cooking, meeting friends, playing tourist, running/walking with her dog, laughing and always ending the day with wine, something she and my mother have very much in common! Oh yes, I also took tons of pictures and had to constantly teach her to take “a good picture”. Also I had my first experience with an EClub Rotarian. I had never heard of EClubs and was disappointed to learn that the Rotaract EClub did not get approved by Rotary International. I read your weekly programs and was very impressed at how “ROTARY” an Eclub was and the biggest surprise, the fellowship! Maureen is very active in charities and she is known among her friends as the Rotary Lady with the Rottweiler who loves American Football, especially the Green Bay Packers and the University of California, Los Angeles Bruins. If you stay with Maureen during the Fall/Football season, be prepared she watches ALL the games and in fact travels to Los Angeles, for all the UCLA Bruin home games. I learned to love? American Football! My professional experience was more than I had hoped for as I was introduced to Christine Smith, whom Maureen knew from her former Rotary land club. Christine is the Assistant Dean of Students for the University of Las Vegas Sam Boyd Law School and was absolutely phenomenal!! She arranged all my classes, trials, hearings, meetings and also shared her home with me for dinners and wine!
