fes tivalconcerts - Toronto Summer Music Festival
July 24 - August 19, 2007 o fm us ag ic al w o rl d th em ic FESTIVAL CONCERTS 2007 WELCOME! The 2007 Festival transports you into THE MAGICAL WORLD OF MUSIC, the theme of this year’s program. Experience the multi-faceted language of music, a world of fantasy, of grief and pain, of drama and humour, of unexpected harmonic turns and changes of atmosphere, of fascinating structures and unending variations. Every program of our 2007 Festival touches on a magical aspect of musical expression. Our opening concert, a piano recital by Anton Kuerti, brings us to a world of Fantasies. The vast range of expression in the world of German Lieder is transmitted to us by Lorna MacDonald and pianist Cameron Stowe; the emotional world of string music by the St. Lawrence String Quartet and Shauna Rolston; the world of the golden sound of winds by the Berlin Philharmonic Wind Quintet; the transparent and colourful world of French music by Karina Gauvin with Michael McMahon in a recital of French melodies; the world of “Hausmusik” in André Laplante’s piano recital; and the world of classical and early Romantic string quartets with the Leipzig String Quartet who will be joined by the incomparable Menahem Pressler for the Brahm’s Quintet in f minor. A concert of string trios played by Mayumi Seiler, Teng Li and Anthony Elliott features one of Mozart’s sublime creations for this combination and the world of improvisation to silent movies is explored by NEXUS. Finally, the Festival will close with the flamboyant humour of Rossini’s masterpiece The Barber of Seville sung by Canada’s best young singers staged by Michael Patrick Albano and played by musicians of the National Academy Orchestra under my direction. I hope you will join us this summer to celebrate music-making of the highest calibre at this exciting Summer Festival in Toronto!
