WPSHC - Gift of Life
designated facility
Ontario has seen a significant
increase in organ and tissue
donation since establishment of
the Trillium Gift of Life Network
(TGLN) in 2002, but some 1,500
Ontarians remain waiting for a
transplant. As part of an ongoing
effort to ensure every donation
opportunity is maximized, TGLN
is continuing
to expand
application of the
Trillium Gift of Life
Network Act to
include additional
designated facilities.
Application of the ‘Notice and
Consent’ provisions of the Act
will now include WPSHC. The
impact of this legislation is that
designated facilities are required
to put policies and procedures in
place for the identification and
reporting of potential donors.
Marco Raggi, our TGLN Hospital
Development Coordinator, will
be providing familiarization
training here this week, February
12 and 13. This is part of WPSHC’s
preparation to become a
designated facility for Ontario’s
tissue and organ donor network.
If you would like to arrange time
with Marco during his visit, please
contact Shannon Burrows (ext. 2440)
or Jim Hanna (ext. 4144).

Residents will roll in a new ride
Receiving the new van... Lakeland Administrator Len Fabiano,
Bruce Langford of L&H Ford, Lakeland CEO Donald Sanderson,
and Douglas Langford.
Lakeland Long Term Care residents are now enjoying the comforts and
safety of a new van while traveling in our community. The locally purchased
van replaces a five-passenger (two wheelchair) van with an eight-passenger
(five wheelchair) capacity.
Beating back cabin fever will be easy with the new and modern van that
will swift residents off to places like the Rosseau Farmers Market in the
summer, fishing trips, drives in the rolling hills of Parry Sound District, and
shopping at local stores and amenities.
The van is also used on the annual Lakeland Spirit Cruise aboard the Island
Queen in August. With the aid of this new van, getting the residents to the
dockside will be a breeze!
Lakeland is looking forward to driving into the future with style!

We want to publicly thank the management and staff at the Microtel Inn
& Suites and the West Parry Sound Health Centre for the kindness they
displayed to our family in our time of severe difficulty.
Our son, brother, nephew and cousin, John-Michael Portelance did not
survive the injuries he suffered in a motor-vehicle collision on Highway
69 north of Parry Sound on January 23. John-Michael’s sister and brother
were also involved. After leaving the hospital the family checked in to the
Microtel and advised other family members to do the same. We arrived at
2:15 a.m. Saturday morning. A friend from Windsor checked in at around 4
a.m.
The hotel staff displayed tremendous sensitivity to our needs in the
morning providing us with a private room to grieve while we had breakfast.
After breakfast we went back to the hospital. We were told before we left
the hotel that we could take as long as we wanted with the three rooms we
were using and the room charges were being waved. We are indebted to
them.
Once we arrived at West Parry Sound Health Centre we were greeted by
a very compassionate Nursing Supervisor, as well as the Coroner.
The hospital showed equal care and attention providing us with a
Chaplain and access to anything we wanted in the cafeteria again at no
charge. We all accepted sandwiches and water for the difficult journey back
to Sudbury.
Thank you very much West Parry Sound Health Centre and the Microtel.
We are overwhelmed by the compassion of the Town of Parry Sound.
Sincerely, the Portelance family, Sudbury

Province creates on-line
cancer risk assessment tool
Ontario is making it easier to reduce cancer risk through
a new on-line tool that helps pinpoint cancer risk and
provides a personalized action plan to lower that risk.
My CancerIQ is a new on-line tool that allows Ontarians
to find out their risk for breast, cervical, colorectal, and
lung cancer. Users can determine their risk of developing
one of these four cancers by completing a series of
interactive questionnaires in less than 10 minutes.
Based on the individual’s responses, the website provides
personalized recommendations to help reduce the risk of
cancer and identifies factors that increase a person’s risk
such as:
• People who eat more red meat are at a higher risk of
developing colorectal cancer.
• Women who smoke are at a higher risk of developing
cervical cancer.
• Workplace exposures may increase the risk of developing
lung cancer.
• Women who consume alcohol are at a higher risk for
developing breast cancer.
In addition to a personalized report, the website also has
resources to help Ontarians better understand how their
lifestyle choices might be putting them at risk for cancer
and how to take action now to lessen their risk.
•••
• The government takes the privacy of personal health
information seriously. People who use My CancerIQ may
choose to save, email or print their results, but to protect
privacy this data will not be stored by Cancer Care Ontario.
• As many as half of all cancers in Ontario can be
prevented by eliminating known risk factors such as
smoking, alcohol consumption, poor diet, and lack of
physical activity.
• My CancerIQ is a new online tool created specifically for
Ontarians. It was developed using Ontario data, making it a
unique tool for Ontarians to manage their cancer risk.
• Cancer Care Ontario is an Ontario government agency
that drives quality and continuous improvement in disease
prevention and screening, the delivery of care, and the
patient experience for cancer and chronic kidney disease
patients.

Wellness Fair
Inspiring lifestyle changes and continued
healthful choices by West Parry Sound Health
Centre and Lakeland Long Term Care employees,
volunteers, patients and families, residents, and
visitors.
Our Wellness Fair held here on January 27 included
many information displays presented by internal
departments and numerous community partners. The
event was planned and presented by the health centre’s
Quality Worklife Initiatives Committee.
The health centre and Lakeland are very thankful to
everyone who helped us by offering their information
and expertise. We share a mutual interest with many
partner organizations, and by supporting each other we
can be successful in creating a healthier and more active
community.
