Dear Colleagues,
Concluding a year of collaboration, a US task force composed
of therapists and teachers supported by prominent professional
organizations has completed a document called the Massage Therapy
Body of Knowledge (MTBOK). The body of knowledge consists
of a definition of massage therapy, a description of the massage
field, a scope of practice for massage therapy, terminology, and
knowledge, skills and abilities of an entry-level massage therapist.
Contributions to the content of the document were accepted via
the web from anyone who chose to submit comments. You can read
the document at www.mtbok.org.
The MTBOK is designed to be a living document, so if parts of it
need to be tweaked or changed, you can submit your comments via
email for periodic review. The plan is for the MTBOK to grow with
the profession, and to help the whole profession move in a similar
direction in the domains of massage and bodywork therapy practice,
accreditation, research, certification, education and licensing.
As of this writing, the “final” version of the MTBOK hasn’t yet
been released, but it will be posted by the time you read this. You
may want to review it, and even to participate, in how we who are the
profession define ourselves and what we do.
Sincerely,
Nancy Toner Weinberger, Publisher

Bindegewebsmassage
Raleigh
Greenville
A reflexive therapy of the connective tissue,
this structured medical massage protocol from
Germany is particularly useful for difficult to
treat conditions, including most inflammatory
conditions, adhesions, gastritis, reflux, irritable
bowel, breathing problems, menstrual problems,
frozen shoulder, blood pressure, migraines, sinus
conditions, et. Al. Treatments engage the reflexes
of the connective tissue and the autonomic nervous
system to bring on powerful healing responses in
the body. Most treatments are given from a seated
position beginning at the sacrum, activating the
parasympathetic portion of the autonomic nervous
system. The client wears underwear and a hospital
gown.

Indian Champissage™ (Head Massage) has been popular in India for over a thousand years. The head, neck, shoulders and upper back—areas where
tension is more likely to accumulate—are gently, firmly and rhythmically massaged until the pressure simply melts away. This unique therapy combines physical
and subtle massage with energy balancing to produce feelings of perfect peace and tranquility. It is a wonderful alternative to seated chair massage.
Kansa Vatki Foot Massage™ is a beautiful and relaxing healthcare modality which balances the body, mind, and spirit. This unique
treatment, steeped in centuries of Ayurvedic ceremony, incorporates ghee (clarified butter). The heart of the treatment involves vigorously
rubbing the soles of the feet with a 3-metal bowl to draw heat and toxins out of the body thereby inducing tremendous relaxation. The Kansa
Vatki Foot Massage™ is deeply revitalizing for tired feet and legs, and it makes a wonderful addition to reflexology.

“It was awesome. I learned a lot about myself. More than I’ve ever known. And I am sure it is going to open up
a lot more doors for me as I pursue this work for myself and with other people. And helping others will in turn
inspire me to work more on myself. It was a great experience. I will definitely be back.” —Carol B, massage
therapist. Yoga and Feldenkrais teacher.
“This course was outstanding. I have learned more in 3 days then I have in years. The course was clear and
concise. I think this knowledge really needs to get out to the world..” —Randall Langston MD, ENT

About the PERG
The Professional Education & Resource Guide is an easy reference
for continuing education opportunities for massage therapists and
bodyworkers.
The PERG offers a variety of ways to select courses that meet your
continuing education needs.
• Browse the pages of advertisements to discover opportunities
to enhance your skills and explore new and exciting theories
and approaches.
• Find courses in a location near you offered as part of a continuing
education program designed to meet the needs of the
professional community.
• Look up the dates you are available to take classes in the index at
the back of the guide and choose from among those listings.
The North Carolina Edition of the PERG is published twice per year; look
for the Spring issue in January and the Fall Update in July.
NEXT ISSUE JANUARY 2011
