This department is part of the HAN Faculty of Engineering
and offers state- of the art study programs in Chemistry,
Biochemistry and Medical Laboratory Technology. Its main
focus is to educate tertiary students and provide them with
the know-ledge, skills and professional attitudes needed to do
high-level research in Chemistry and Life Sciences.
General introduction to HAN - University
HAN University, short for ‘the University of Professional Education of
Arnhem and Nijmegen’ is a well-known centre for vocational training in
the Netherlands. HAN has campuses both in Arnhem and Nijmegen,
twin-cities located in the wooded country side on the eastern borders
with Germany.
The Faculties of Economics, Education, Engineering, Informatics and
Communication and Health Care offer certified tertiary course programs
to more than 21.000 students at BA and MA level. The HAN has firm
links to companies and institutions both in the Netherlands and across
the borders. In addition, the HAN closely co-operates with other
universities all over the world.
he Institute of Applied Sciences has been offering the Life
T
Sciences program for five years. Many students from different
nationalities have already successfully attended this program.
I n 2005 the HAN BioCenter was officially opened, an expertise
center for innovative research. The cooperation between the
Institute of Applied Sciences and the HAN BioCenter enables
the university to provide all activities concerning Life Sciences:
the bachelor program Life Sciences, the master program
Molecular Life Sciences and research activities for the industry
Information days
Information days are held regularly throughout the year, where students
can visit the school and find out about the study program of Life
Sciences. For more information about these days, please contact the

Already graduates consider our university a gateway to an exciting career in a
university-awarded degree. Students of
our undergraduate programs can acquire
this degree in four years of study on a
full-time basis. Upon successful
completion of all the required courses
and study projects, the student is

community without borders. In this way, your study at HAN University in the
Netherlands could serve as the springboard to an exciting future later on during
your career in this ever-changing global world.
The International Bachelor ‘Life Sciences’ program aims at all aspects that play
a role in ‘life’, such as the study of:
• processes within the body (Biochemistry);
• factors influencing (hereditary) illnesses (Immunology, Molecular
Genetics);
• diagnostics with reference to (infection) diseases (Microbiology,
Molecular Genetics);
• micro organisms which can be put to use as manufacturers of chemicals that are difficult to produce via other inexpensive procedures
(Biotechnology);
• genetic information (Bio-Informatics);
• possibilities regarding quality improvement of (agricultural) products (Cell
biology & Tissue production).
Upon successful completion of their Life Sciences program, graduates can
choose from positions in universities/ teaching hospitals (research) or
positions in businesses (research & development). Examples are:
• pharmaceutical companies: developing diagnostic kits: HIV,
pregnancy tests, etc., or developing new medicines against AIDS,
cancer, arthritis, etc.;
• biotechnological companies: researching or improving the production
processes of bacteria and fungi (Penicillin, Meningitis vaccines, etc.);
• plant development company: research into improving resistance of
agricultural products;
• forensic laboratories: DNA research, etc.
placement’ provides students with a glimpse of the profession
they are pursuing. Students receive classroom instruction in
various formats, additional hands-on experience in laboratories and group assignments. Each assignment constitutes an
essential part of the whole
educational process as contents learned, practical skills
acquired and team work are
evaluated.
Hands on education and
tranining in laboratory skills
The Life Science study
program focuses on subjects such as Cell Biology,
Biochemistry, Microbiology,
Molecular Genetics, Bioinformatics, Immunology, Physiology
of Plants and Animals, Laboratory Information Systems,
Communication Skills (written and oral) and Research Strategies.
In addition to these majors, support subjects are offered such as
Mathematics, Physics, Statistics and English. Students use the
expertise in these areas to resolve realistic issues faced in Life
Sciences today.
Major and Minor
Each ‘learning route’ has a basic organization, which consists
of a major and a minor. The major is the main direction that
you have chosen within your educational programme and the
one in which you develop the professional competences. The
minor is a ‘secondary’ direction in which you expand on the
breadth of your professional competences or acquire more
in-depth proficiencies in order to characterize yourself in the
practice of your profession. The choice of a minor depends
on your ambitions and talents. When you have completed
both your major and minor, you are very well prepared for
the job market.
Practical component
Putting theory into practice is one of the aims of the Life
Sciences program. This is done by means of projects, the work
placement and the final thesis.
Core competences (related to the professional tasks) which will
be acquired during the four-year course are:
• question clarification
• conducting experiments
• analyzing research results
• quality maintenance
• maintenance and administration
• reporting and presenting research
• project-based working
• cooperating in a team
• supervising/providing leadership
• offering advice
• self-guiding professional development

Admission criteria
The Bachelor program in Life Sciences is available to all
students who have successfully completed their formal
education at a senior high school (in the Netherlands: ‘HAVO/
VWO’, ‘Natuur en Techniek’ or ‘Natuur en Gezondheid’) and
who had English as a main subject. If you do not meet these
requirements but if you are motivated for Life Sciences, please
contact Ton van Amelsvoord T +31 (0)24 353 19 15 or
E [email protected] to establish if admission is still
possible with extra courses.
Non-Dutch students should consult our Enrolment office for
specific accreditation of their previous education and training
(see next page). Knowledge and skills in the English language
(Toefl 550 or higher score) must be at a high level in order to
concentrate on the course contents. Finally, an academic panel
will approve the final enrolment application, to ensure that all
the requirements have been fulfilled.
