Member Newsletter | Fall 2013
Dear Members,
Fall is a time of year when we
focus on memories. There are the
wonderful aromas of Thanksgiving,
the twinkling lights and decorations
of Christmas, the resolutions made
each New Year—memories of our
past and new experiences in our
present. For fall 2013, Seniority is
offering a memorable focus series
that will provide an in-depth look
at the brain (neurology). How
it works, what can go wrong,
anatomy, physiology—even a class
on memory. Be sure to attend three
of the first four Focus On classes
(designated by a microscope on
page 2), have your Pathway to
Wellness card marked and you can
attend the Lunch & Learn class
FREE. You will receive your card at
the first focus class. Check out all
the exciting day trips, multi-night
tours and the adventure travel
Seniority On The Go has lined up.
There’s something for everyone.
Your family members and friends
are always welcome on our trips
and at our classes. Wishing you
good health always,
GetWell Network Television Comes to
Bethesda North and Good Samaritan Hospitals
Surf the Internet. Watch a premium movie. View a video about diabetes management.
You are getting the picture of TriHealth’s new television system, the GetWell Network.
Television shows, movies, video Solitaire and Internet access all are part of the
entertainment provided free to inpatients and emergency patients at Bethesda North
and Good Samaritan hospitals.
More important for your health, however, are interactive and health education features
designed to improve your hospital experience and better prepare you for going home:
• Brief videos on medical topics
• Personal medication information, with direct links to the in-house Pharmacy
• Ability to send questions or messages to hospital departments
• Survey questions to allow you to voice your opinion about your care
• Planning tools for your discharge
“The GetWell Network is considered the best in the industry,” says Jennifer Skinner,
director of Organizational Effectiveness and Corporate Educational Services. “We want
it to increase quality outcomes and decrease readmissions through better teaching
and discharge planning. We also want to improve patient satisfaction by being more
responsive to patient needs and questions.”

Seniority Insider
The nervous system is made up of your brain, spinal cord and a complex network of thin
threads called neurons that weave throughout your entire body. These neurons carry messages
back and forth the same way telephone wires do. Sensory nerves send messages to the brain
through the spinal cord in your backbone. Motor nerves carry messages back from the brain to
the muscles and glands. There is a tiny electrical pulse that travels along the neuron to the end
(dendrite). The electrical pulse releases chemicals that carry the pulse to the next cell.
Join us for our upcoming Focus classes, listed on Page 2. Learn about the impulses that create
our ability to see, hear, remember, breath, move, laugh and feel pain or pleasure. We will also
look at what happens when something goes wrong.

How Does It Work?
What Did I Come In Here For?
How do the brain, spinal cord and nerves work together in
harmony to create our unique selves? Come learn about the
electrical pulses that direct and control everything—from the
brain to your toes.
The brain contains many mysteries. Charles Puchta, Director
of the Center for Aging, will talk about how memory works,
how we can improve it, and what are normal changes as
we age.

What’s Wrong?
Brain Food!
Synapses, dendrites, axons, voltage charges—all make up
the electrical system within our bodies. Where does pain
come from? Tingling? What is phantom pain? An interesting
look at neurotransmitters and the design of our brain.
Keeping our nerves healthy and our brain sharp is definitely
a growing field of study. Learn the latest on what to eat in
order to stay focused and energized.

What Happened?
A TIA is a “mini stroke.” You may not even know it has
happened. What makes a TIA different than an aneurysm?
TriHealth hospitals are Stroke Centers of Excellence.

Seniority Healthy Hint
For Mental Energy,
Choose Complex Carbohydrates
Your brain needs good fuel to perform at its best. To be at
the top of your mental game, carbohydrates keep you going.
But the type of carbs you choose makes all the difference.
Simple carbohydrates (sugar, white bread, refined grains)
give a quick boost followed by an equally rapid crash. There
is now evidence that a diet high in simple carbs can greatly
increase the risk for cognitive impairment (confusion,
dementia) in older adults.
Choose complex carbohydrates for healthy energy that
lasts. Whole-wheat bread, brown rice, oatmeal, high-fiber
cereal, lentils, and whole beans for example. Try a complex
carbohydrate treat such as yogurt with granola and dried
fruit, celery with peanut butter and raisins, veggies with
hummus dip, or a hard-boiled egg with whole-wheat crackers!

Don’t Fall for That!
Do you know how to keep your balance? Special exercises
to strengthen key muscles can help prevent falls, which are
the number one cause of death for older adults in Ohio.
Falls account for more emergency department visits and
hospitalizations than all other injuries combined. Fatal falls are
NOT a part of normal aging; learn what you can do to protect
yourself. A box lunch will be included.
