We are still unpacking and settling into our new home but we extend a warm welcome to our visitors from Rochdale. club we are grateful for your support and hope you have a good afternoon watching the Blues and Casey. The second piece of good news comes with the community team, Oxford Cavaliers who beat all before them last weekend at The West of England RL9’s tournament. An outstanding effort by the boys ahead of the full season. The squad is still open for new players interested in giving rugby league a go, so if you are interested, don’t hesitate, please contact Will Brewer on 07946 684352. We’ve been on our travels to France and Wales with no sign of our first points emerging in our account. The Toulouse trip was an excellent experience for our young side and many positives and admiration for our club was won in Toulouse. It’s a cliché but the score line doesn’t do our boys Still on the community scene and more justice for the effort, spirit and grit they put into congratulations to the Cavaliers U13’s and U14’s the game and their opponents whose respect who last weekend both won their respective they gained. tournaments in Essex. They are in cup action today Hoping to build on the Toulouse performance before the first team match, so best wishes and and kick on in North Wales turned into another good luck to all the boys and John Connaughton afternoon of frustration. Again good rugby league from the club. John and lads have been working produced but while errors occur too frequently, hard since January, training at our new home allowing opponents easy possession, our first Tilsley Park. It’s great to see roots being put down points will prove elusive. The Blues are a young at Tilsley and we hope more fun and success is side with an average age of around 22! Not just around the corner for the young Cavaliers! many realise this, so faith is required in the boys, Back to today and the tough challenge the Hornets a focus on the positives they are producing and present before the Blues. To my mind it’s no hard work to eradicate the mistakes and staying tougher a game than what the boys have already strong in our belief in one another will deliver. I’d faced in Toulouse. Hornets are a well organized like to also say thanks to the Oxford faithful for team with depth and experience and momentum your travelling support at North Wales, great to is going for them. So the desire to compete and see you guys! give your best is a minimum from the lads today, Two positives to mention and firstly a warm be bold, be focused and be determined and give welcome and thanks to our match day sponsors a performance to be proud of! this afternoon in Brambles Kitchen who are also Enjoy today’s game and c’mon you Blues! the proud sponsor of the Blues hooker Casey Canterbury. Brambles Kitchen are our inaugural Adrian Smith sponsor at Tilsley Park and on behalf of the COACH’S CORNER “A LOT OF HEART SHOWN BY PLAYERS AND THAT’S THE MIND SET AND ATTITUDE I’M LOOKING FOR TODAY AND THE REST OF THE SEASON...” W Welcome to Tilsley for our second home game in our new surroundings which are starting to feel familiar. It’s fantastic that we are hosting the Oxford Gold Cup junior rugby league tournament before the game today. The Cavaliers U13’s, under John Connaughton’s tutorage, are developing well and we all wish them the best of luck today. Get down a bit earlier if you can and give the young lads some encouragement. of our less experienced players took good steps forward in terms of their personal development and I hope as a group we learn to cut the error count down. It seems an age ago, but I’d like to mention the Toulouse trip and the spirit and character shown by the boys against full time opposition. It was a gallant effort that earned genuine praise and respect from the opposition’s head coach. A double injury blow in the first 10 minutes meant we had to change our shape on the pitch a number of times with only two interchanges! A lot of heart shown by players and that’s the mind set and attitude I’m looking for today and the rest of the season. Today will be a tough game. Rochdale Hornets are among the elite group of teams in League 1, steeped in history and with a squad of depth and experience which have made an impressive start to the 2016 season. They will be looking at Enjoy the game! banking the points from the southern teams. Following last week’s match at North Wales, we know that we need to put in an 80 minute performance today to be in with a shout of getting anything from the game. I felt we matched the Crusaders for parts of that game but we allowed them to get the initiative back which is frustrating. On the positive side some Tim GREENE IN ENGLAND UNIVERSITY SQUAD CHARLIE GREENE Oxford RL player and St Mary’s student, Charlie Greene has been named in the 26 man England squad by England University RL coaches Colin Baker and Dean Reacher, in their 26-man squad following initial sessions with their 31 man train on squad. On his achievement Charlie said “I’m proud and delighted, it was quite a grueling session we were put through at the University of Nottingham, but I can say the work done with Oxford has stood me in good stead.” Blues coach Tim Rumford commented “Charlie is an honest hard working player, he gives you his all and is a real team player. The coaches will be pleased to have him amongst their ranks. The lads and the staff at Oxford are thrilled for him and we wish him every success with this year’s competition. The squad will take part in the Associations Cup, facing Great Britain Teachers, Great Britain Police and Great Britain Armed Forces. Then the squad will contest the Student Four Nations which, this year, takes place in Edinburgh. Charlie concluded “It’s exciting and I know quite a few of the Oxford lads have trodden this path before me and they’ve told me it’s a great experience and one to enjoy. I hope to do just that and give it my best shot.” Well done so far Charlie and good luck from all the players and the club, we will be watching and supporting you with pride. Congratulations young man! THE MAGNIFICENT NINE AT SWINDON Congratulations to the Oxford Cavaliers 9’s squad who won the West of England tournament at Swindon last Saturday. On the road to success they first encountered Southampton, beating them 28 – 4 which then took them through to face Bath, who were dispatched with a 22- 0 result. Gloucester awaited in the next round and a tough 24 – 18 match saw the Cavs win 3 from 3 and a semi final spot against Swindon. No nerves were shown and a confident 24 – 0 swept the lads into their first ever final! Oxford Cavaliers v Cheltenham produced a close encounter with the boys clinching silverware following a 16 – 12 result. A delighted Will Brewer beamed with delight as George Lenton Hall lifted the cup “A good day with a good performance by all today, on and off the field. Thanks to Colin, Jane and Ryan and especially to the lads who put in a great team effort, they all richly deserve to be credited for their performances.” The full season will soon be commencing in the coming weeks and if you want to try your hand at rugby league then contact Will Brewer on 07946 684352, all are welcome. Rochdale Hornets beat local rivals Oldham 32–18 in 2013 Championship 1 playoff final. In recent years they have been well supported by St Helens but have this season forged a new strong relationship with Super League side Warrington Wolves. ONE’S TO WATCH PAUL CROOK Half back Crook has been a key player for Rochdale Hornets over the past 6 years having joined the Hornets back in 2010 and since then the club captain has made 154 appearances and scored over 1300 points. As well as the regular goal kicker, he has chipped in with his fair share of tries and has already gone over the whitewash 5 times this year and will be looking to beat the 17 he scored last year. CHRIS RILEY Rochdale pulled off a bit of a coup over the off-season by signing Chris Riley. Riley is highly experienced having played at the top level in Super League over the best part of a decade. After a long period at Warrington Wolves which saw him rack up nearly 200 appearances for the club, he joined Wakefield Wildcats where he spent the following two years. 2016 and Chris steps down two divisions to link up with Rochdale and is a key member of their squad having played in 10 games scoring 4 tries. MATTY HADDEN Oxford fans will know Matty well having spent two seasons at the club making 23 appearances scoring 5 tries from his favoured prop position. An Irish international who went to the World Cup in 2013 then moved to Rochdale ahead of the 2015 season where he made 23 appearances and scoring 3 tries in his debut season for the Hornets. He has been a regular in the side this season and has already matched his tally of 3 tries in the opening part of the season.
