Mission Statement
Camp Oochigeas is a privately funded, volunteer based organization that provides kids with
cancer and kids affected by childhood cancer with a unique opportunity for growth through
challenging, fun, enriching and magical experiences.
2009 Highlights
Camp Site Improvements:
•A new Fishing Dock to create a safe and accessible space to enhance
our fishing program at Camp.
•Extension of the dock to allow new swimmers a bigger and more
accessible area to swim.
•Covered stairs that provide a safe way for our campers and
volunteers to access the Barn and Sports Court from main camp.
•Modification of our Canoe Centre into an indoor/outdoor,
functional and accessible space that allows our campers to prepare
for canoeing activities.
•A new Lily Pad floating dock that provides an exciting destination
for campers to canoe, kayak or swim to during activities and
special camp events.

Increasing Programming & Camper Participation
•Growth of the In-Hospital Program at SickKids Hospital with four fulltime specialists providing more bed-side visits, group programming
and new activities for patients on the 8th floor.
•The position of Young Adult Leadership Specialist has allowed us to
expand our teen programming in the Hospital and in the community.
These programs allow teens with cancer the opportunity to build
social and leadership skills that will help support them in their lives
beyond cancer.
•A new Ooch Dog Sledding weekend for L.I.T.’s (Leaders in Training)
in Northern Ontario.
•Participated in a camper exchange program with Camp Goodtimes,
a camp for children with cancer in British Columbia, where three
campers from Ooch and four campers from Camp Goodtimes were
able to gain new skills, meet new friends and have a whole new
camp experience.
•H eld the largest session of Ooch summer Day Camp for children
ages 4-7 at Camp Robin Hood where 14 out of the 20 campers had
their first ever Ooch experience.
•Grew our Urban Ooch Program to provide more opportunities for
our campers to connect throughout the year.
Incredible Community Support
• Over 400 volunteers generously donated their time at camp, in
the hospital, during in-city programs, as a board member or as a
volunteer at community events.
•Over 70 incredible supporters held their own community fundraising
events, ranging from bake sales to golf tournaments, in support of
Camp Oochigeas.
Efficiency and Financial Responsibility
•Only 19 cents of every dollar we raised was spent on fundraising
and administration in 2009.
•Over 750 fundraising pages were set up by
individuals and teams who helped raise over
$800,000 through the 2009 Sporting Life 10K.
Thank you for your continued support of Camp Oochigeas. As
we close out another successful year of providing meaningful
programming for children affected by childhood cancer, we think
about the remarkable growth that Ooch has seen over these past
several years. Since the opening of our very own campsite, many of
the strategic objectives set forth by the board of directors have come
to fruition. We have expanded far beyond six weeks of summer camp
for children with cancer to include: a week of camp for teens and
one for bereaved siblings, Weekends at Camp throughout the fall
and winter months, the launch of a successful In-Hospital Program
at SickKids Hospital, and various programs in the city for kids of
all ages. We have not forgotten that this growth could never have
been possible without your generosity, compassion, hard-work and
commitment. As we reflect on another year passed, we hope you feel
a sense of deep pride for your role and our progress together.
Thanks to donors like you, 586 campers attended a camp program
and over 160 campers had their very first Ooch experience in 2009!
Even more remarkable is the number of camper experiences shared
through our In-Hospital Program. In 2009 alone, children treated
on the 8th floor at SickKids Hospital shared in over 5,000 Ooch
experiences, thanks to our In-Hospital Program Specialists and
committed volunteers. Thank you for making this possible and for
helping to put a smile on the face of a child with cancer.
I encourage you to take a moment to flip through the pages of our
2009 Annual Report, where you will see the many faces of Camp
Oochigeas. You will see bright smiles, children laughing and the
carefree, fearless demeanors of our remarkable campers. You will see
the magic of Camp Oochigeas. As we look to the future of Ooch,
we continue to expand on our strategic objective of providing more
Ooch more often for our campers and their families. As a result, we
have begun plans to create our very own Camp in the City, close
to SickKids Hospital. This year-round recreation facility will not only
provide a space where campers can experience “Ooch” close to
home, but it will also house our offices and provide a planning space
for our staff and dedicated volunteers. Our new home in the city
will afford us more opportunities to offer diverse programs, engage
children who are culturally unfamiliar or too young for summer camp
and most importantly, it will allow us to continue to enrich the lives
of children affected by childhood cancer. This project would not be
possible without your support. Thank you for believing in us and for
allowing us to continue to dream big!
On a final note, I would like to extend a few important notes of
gratitude. Thank you to the dedicated volunteers who give countless
hours so that Ooch campers have the time of their lives. Thank you to
our wonderful friends and partners at SickKids Hospital who ensure

Residential Programs
Summer Camp
Leadership Program
Summer residential camp gives children a traditional camp
experience and a safe place to step out of their routine of hospital
visits and focus on being kids. Located in Muskoka, Ontario, Ooch
gives children the chance to try new activities and accomplish things
that they never dreamed possible. Whether they’re climbing the
rock wall, singing around the campfire, canoeing across the lake or
creating a masterpiece in pottery, campers have ongoing support
and encouragement from their peers and counsellors.
TThe Ooch Leadership Program is specifically designed for teenagers
affected by childhood cancer aged 16-19 and provides opportunities
for teens to stretch their limits, learn new skills and enjoy a
challenging and exciting adventure with other young people.

Weekends at Camp
W.A.C., short for Weekends at Camp, brings children to Camp Ooch
on weekend trips to our campsite in Muskoka during the Fall and
Winter. These are great ways for Ooch campers to reconnect with old
friends and make new friends along the way! They are also a perfect
opportunity to introduce potential summer campers to the magic
of camp before the summer arrives. Whether carving a pumpkin or
building a snow fort, Weekends at Camp provide campers with the
perfect injection of camp fun before the summer arrives!

L.I.T. 1 Program
The L.I.T. 1 program helps teens build new leadership skills, self-esteem and
gain wilderness experience.
L.I.T. 2 Program
The L.I.T 2 program allows experienced leaders to take what they learned in their
L.I.T. 1 year and apply it to the role of being an assistant camp counsellor. Working
side by side with experienced and skilled cabin counsellors and activity leaders, L.I.T.
2’s are guided through workshops focusing on leadership, behaviour management,
facilitation skills, intentional programming and more.

This component of the leadership program is designed to challenge teens to create
an environment that cannot be accomplished in the camp setting. Up-Stream offers
participants a nine-day, true wilderness experience along the French River.

Dog Sledding Expedition
We held our first Dog Sledding Expedition in Northern Ontario.
This 3-day dog sledding adventure is an exciting and challenging
trip for leaders ages 15-18. Throughout the weekend, both
campers and instructors work together to create a supportive
leadership oriented environment. Campers build self-esteem and
leadership skills through challenging and engaging
fun-filled days with their dog sled teams.

Camper Exchange Program with Camp Goodtimes

Camp Oochigeas participated in a camper exchange program with Camp Goodtimes, which
is an oncology camp in British Columbia and a fellow member of COCA (Children’s Oncology
Camping Association). Three young leaders from Camp Ooch travelled to Camp Goodtimes at the
beginning of the summer to share the magic of Ooch and gain new skills and experiences to bring
back to their other fellow campers at Ooch! Four campers from Camp Goodtimes made the trip
to Muskoka and took part and took part in our Up-Stream program and 7SCAPE session of camp.

UO’s are one-day camp-style events that happen throughout the
year in the city. These are wonderful opportunities for campers to
try new activities, meet new friends, and get a booster shot of camp
during the school year.

Day Camp
Day camp is designed for younger children with cancer (ages 4-7).
Campers enjoy a variety of activities including swimming, arts and
crafts, games, trips to the zoo and more. With campers returning
to their own home at night, it is an ideal introduction to camp for
younger children, and for families who are unfamiliar with the camp
experience. With door-to-door transportation and a program that can
accommodate medical appointments, day camp is an ideal way to
provide camp experiences for our younger population.

Camp Robin Hood, a summer day camp facility in the Toronto area,
has given us the opportunity to provide many of the activities at
residential camp right here in the city! Some of these activities
include: canoeing, rock climbing, and archery.

Ooch is fortunate to have a strong relationship with SickKids Hospital.
Our In-Hospital Program focuses on scheduled activities six days a
week on the oncology floor at SickKids. This program is led by four
full-time In-Hospital Program Specialists, including a Young Adult
Leadership Specialist who facilitates programs specifically geared for
teens. In addition to our day programs, our volunteers run a camp-style
play program on 8A (for in-patients only), four nights per week. All of
our programs in the hospital give kids the chance to play, be creative
and connect with other kids going through similar experiences.

movies by using fun programs with Macbooks and other digital media equipment.

Nowadays, to ensure credibility in the medical world, it is important to
disclose conflicts at the beginning of every piece of literature. I must
therefore disclose up front that I have been a long time believer in the
power of camp. Long before my days in medical school, becoming
a pediatrician, or specializing in oncology, I was a camp counsellor
summer after summer for more than 10 years. People would often
express how unselfish and dedicated I was to devote myself to kids at
camp. But to be honest, it was in fact very selfish of me. At camp I got
a front row seat to watch kids transform. Nowhere is this more true
than when I am lucky enough to spend time at Camp Oochigeas.
If you’ve never been to Camp Ooch, it is so hard to truly express the
magic that happens. You see pictures of the costumes, the adventure
courses, the water sports and of course, the smiles. But seeing the true
magic of Ooch is to EXPERIENCE it.
Almost every day at work I meet kids who are dealing with cancer and
see how it changes everything in their lives. Suddenly, the child who
just days before had friends and playmates they’d see every day, now
sees doctors and nurses. The fun things that used to fill their days have
instead been replaced with needle pokes, medications and tests that
often make no sense to them. Worse yet, their friends and brothers
and sisters simply cannot relate to what’s happening to them.
When Ooch first started as a residential camp, we’d say that camp
provided two weeks out of the year that our patients had a chance to
reconnect with the fun that they had missed in their lives. Now, what is
so exciting is that the Ooch In-Hospital Program provides hundreds of
more programming days for kids to find that connection that gets them
back to their real job, being kids!
Cancer treatment is hard. I would be surprised if anyone reading
this disagreed. The challenges are many. Surgery, radiation, and
chemotherapy can take an immense physical and emotional toll.

In Hospital Camp
Doctors, nurses, and other health care professionals
can name a long list of patients whose ‘physical’
condition improved because of our care but they are
still a long way from the kids they were beforehand.
It is simply incredible to witness not only the emotional healing that
camp can bring about, but more impressively the emotional growth.
The boy who would barely make eye contact with anyone but mom
and dad since treatment started, is suddenly standing up to tell a joke
to a full room. The girl who has hidden her scars from all, is suddenly
keen to jump into the lake to try waterskiing for the very first time.
This doesn’t just happen on its own.
The Ooch experience creates this intangible magic for hundreds of
kids each year. The effort of every staff and volunteer at camp is so
impressively dedicated towards creating an environment where our
patients, our CAMPERS, are not only free to be the kid they were before
cancer but are able grow in so many new and exciting ways. Like I said,
you can see the smiles, but to witness the stories behind those smiles is
something truly remarkable.

A Message from the
Executive Director
The Camp Oochigeas motto is: ‘You have failed only when you
have failed to try. Act as if it were impossible to fail and it will be’.
2009 was a great year to live our motto to the fullest, as it presented
all of us with numerous challenges: The economic downturn, H1N1
and even a cold, wet summer come to mind.
diagnosed with cancer at Sick Kids Hospital, only 20% of those kids
are coming to programs outside of the hospital. This is because some
families are culturally unfamiliar with the concept of camp, too young
to attend our programs, or they are just not emotionally ready to let
their sick child go away for a week or two.
At Ooch, we try to keep some perspective on things by considering
what our campers may be facing on a daily basis. The Ooch
community seems to know that when you focus your attention
on helping others, it lessens your own troubles. Our community
of volunteers and donors rallied to ensure that Ooch was able to
continue to serve the population we are all so committed to.
Having our own facility close to Sick Kids Hospital will allow us to
create programs for these kids in order to provide them with many
of the social benefits that camp provides – on their own terms.
We hope that eventually, they will be ready to make the leap to
residential camp too. We sincerely hope you will consider supporting
us as we strive to make this dream a reality.
Although our donations were approximately 13% below projections,
we still managed to continue to increase our programs for children
with cancer, as outlined in this annual report. We tightened up our
spending even more than usual, and made sure that the campers
didn’t have to feel the economic crunch at all. The lower revenue
is illustrated in our fundraising ratio – where we show you how we
spend your donated dollars. In 2008, we spent $0.15 per dollar on
fundraising and administration costs. In 2009, this number jumped
to $0.19. Although this remains incredibly low for our industry, we
take such an increase very seriously. This jump is a direct result of
the decrease in our projected revenue. In other words, we spent the
same amount of money but earned fewer dollars – a result of the
dampened economy. I anticipate our ratio to drop back down in 2010.
We decided to build the 2009 annual report around this year’s camp
theme – Live Brightly. When you live brightly, you let others shine - a
fitting theme for Ooch in any year. The community that makes Ooch
so special – the volunteers, medical staff from SickKids Hospital,
donors, camp staff, campers and their families, and our volunteer
board led by Howard Breen – give so generously so that others can
shine. This is truly what makes Ooch so special and magical. Thank
you for being a part of the magic!
