Bentley Flying Spur 2014MY
AS WITH THE CONTINENTAL GT, THE FLYING SPUR IS CONSTRUCTED
ON THE VW GROUP D1 PLATFORM THAT IS SHARED WITH THE VW PHAETON.
This is more than a facelift, with
improvements made to the B-post and sill
reinforcements and the front cross-member.
Additional deformable floor sections have
been included for lateral crash impact
protection. By optimisation of the materials
used throughout the structure, including
UHSS and HSS, Bentley has reduced the
vehicle weight by 50kg from the predecessor
to 2475kg.
This, combined with a 4% increase
in torsional stiffness, has enabled the new
Flying Spur to be faster and more agile,
but also enabled improvements in noise,
vibration and ride qualities (NVH).
The bonnet and front wings are from
hot-formed aluminium, with the bonnet
re-engineered
for
greater
pedestrian
protection.
As the car exterior has been largely
re-designed
Bentley
has
taken
the
opportunity to re-engineer the door panels to
reduce weight and the number of component
panels. In addition, the doors now feature
increased sound insulation behind the skin
and improved double sealing to reduce cabin
noise intrusion.
As with most Bentley models, acoustic
layered glazing features to further reduce
road noise.
The boot lid is of composite construction
to further reduce weight, but also to integrate
the main vehicle antennae.
For this model a specific 19” tyre was
developed, with an increased sidewall profile
to further reduce road noise and harshness.

Technology :
Trim levels :
All Flying Spur models feature Electronic
Stability Programme (ESP, ESC), ABS,
Electronic Brakeforce Distribution and Brake
Assist.
There is the standard Flying Spur, with
a considerable range of personalisation
options.
Air suspension is standard, with 4 driver
selectable settings. The anti-roll bar stiffness
has been reduced together with suspension
bushes that are 25% softer being introduced
to improve ride comfort, though the active
suspension will increase stiffness during
hard dynamic cornering manoeuvres.
Audio, navigation, ride and telephone
functions are controlled by a touch-screen
in the centre console, with a remote
control (again touch-screen) for rear seat
passengers.
Bi-Xenon
headlamps
with
integrated
headlamp wash are standard on all models,
with LED daytime run lamps and rear LED
tail lamps.
All will feature 7 SRS airbags: drivers,
driver’s knee airbag, passenger and side/
thorax and curtain airbags.
The W12 Flying Spur Mulliner has a sporting
theme with specific 21” alloy wheels,
Mulliner tread-plates, drilled pedals and
diamond-quilted seats with perforated door
hide material.

Options :
There is a Naim audio system option, with 11
speakers for surround sound.
There are ventilation and massage options
for the front and rear seats and a Multimedia
Specification that includes two DVD players
and two 10” LCD screens for rear seat
occupants.
However, this is a Bentley and there is a vast
option list available.
These include:
Enhanced climate control (for certain global
markets) increases cool air for rear seat
passengers.
Rear view camera:
Ash trays and cigarette lighters are a no cost
option as “smokers pack”.
Adaptive Cruise Control with ‘follow to stop’
functionality is available.
There are 5 optional wood veneers,
5 optional hide colours and 4 colour-split
options including duo-tones, all of these
being hand crafted and finished in Bentley
tradition.
There are 9 alloy wheel types available sized
from 19” to 21”. In addition self-centring
wheel centre caps can be specified, as well
as alloy tyre valve caps.
Paint colours :
There are 17 standard paint colours and 100+
further colours available, though Bentley
will of course offer specifically requested
colours. (Note: Bentley will protect its
reputation by steering customers away from
too garish colour choices of exterior/interior
colour clashes).
Engine line up :
6 litre W12 engine: 5998cc twin-turbo
aspirated, producing 616bhp and peak
torque of 800Nm at just 1700rpm. This is
Bentley’s most powerful engine to date.
An 8-speed automatic transmission is
standard, as is permanent 4WD with a 40:60
front to rear torque split.
