CVR ACTIVITY CALENDAR—2015
I used the wrong picture last month; in particular, my
apologies to Zack who wasn’t in the other picture. Also,
apologies again to Zack for having to crop out his wonderful
Holiday shoes. (However, love that tie!)
If you have never hosted a meet before, let this be the year you
step up. You need a place to eat and a point of interest or perhaps a
speaker at the place you’re eating. Jerre is still our meet chairman
and will give you as much help as you need. November and April
are completely open. Several others are not firmed up yet. Would
you like to help someone or team up with someone to do a meet?

Most folks in the old car hobby pretty much write off the winter months, but I actually saw a few people driving their old cars
in December. They were taking advantage of the dry roads and moderate temperatures . . . extending the “season” just a bit longer.
It’s always great to see antique cars on the road, but it’s really neat to see them in winter. Of course, now that the snow and cold
have truly arrived, even those hearty souls have retreated to their warm garages to wait for spring.
If you’re fortunate enough to have a comfortable place to tinker with your old car, this a perfect time for those repairs and
improvements you’ve been meaning to do. I always seem to have a long list of old car projects for the winter, but never manage to
get them all done. This year, I’m working on the fuel gauge in the panel truck and I might tackle the one in our old Dodge if there’s
time. Even though we can’t drive our old cars right now, it’s sort of therapeutic to keep your hand in, even if it’s with a wrench.
Our CVR monthly meets are another way to stay involved and they begin in February with another interesting meet hosted by the
Hoffmans. Hopefully, most of you can attend our first meet of the year – even though you probably won’t be driving your old car
this time. I am asking everyone to remember their name badges, even though you may think everyone already knows you. I, for
one, realize that I need to see and hear someone’s name several times before it sinks in and I’m sure our newer members would also
appreciate it. Please ask for a badge if you don’t have one or need a replacement. Finally, I’d like to remind everyone to keep their
membership dues up to date – not only for CVR but with AACA and/or VMCCA (It’s OK to belong to both). You can renew AACA
online.

Report of
Zack Hoffman
Vice Director
Happy Valentines Day! Another month gone by and no closer to my goal of building a bigger garage.
For now, we only have a decrepit two car garage with just enough space for both of our Subarus. If we
ever plan on storing the 16 or getting the VW Bus that Jess dreams of, we'll need to upgrade
eventually. Speaking of cars; Check Your Recalls on your modern cars. Jess's Forester had a recall
we were unaware of that resulted in a brand new catalytic converter installed for free. Hers was just a
catalytic converter ,but yours could have a safety issue that's especially prone to failure in the winter,
check your car manufacturers website or the nhtsa.gov.
In club news, we're looking forward to the V-Day meet at Collegian Court in Chicopee. We went last
winter a few months after they re-opened and the menu was full of polish American favorites. Our
dinner was delicious and filling. Jess and I are hosting the March meet, our standard maple coated
pancake breakfast at a new location, High Hopes Maple Farm in Worthington. They serve an excellent
(and reasonably priced) buffet every weekend through maple season. The restaurant has plenty of
space but parking might be a bit tight. The decor is very rustic, the floors are gravel, and the walls are
covered in antique maple memorabilia and facts.
We learned just before Christmas that the Roland and Peggy's absence through the last few meets
was due to a few different health issues. The club delivered a get well bouquet to Roland and found
him to be in good spirits and hoping to be back with us soon.

Technical Help: Frank Moro
Frank thought it would be helpful to members to have a question and
answer format for technical help. Please send your questions to Frank at his
email:
[email protected] He will format an answer and send both
question and answer to me . These will be posted in the next newsletter.
It will take a while to get up & running so here is a question Joe asked
Frank about his 62 Cadillac. Joe removed the intake manifold to get heater
hoses remanufactured. He noticed that the choke heater tube was opened to
atmosphere on the bottom side of the manifold. He wondered why he
wasn’t losing vacuum and asked Frank this question.
Frank said the heat tube heated the bimetal spring in the choke to open it.
There would be no vacuum loss.

Perpetual Trophy Winners continued
Frank Moro Memorial
This perpetual trophy is awarded to the person that regards authenticity to be very
important. It will be for someone who is willing to share their knowledge of their
authentic details of their own car as well as others. This is to be given based on the
individual’s merits verses the condition of a vehicle. For example, it could be given to
someone that writes a special article about original details of a certain make and model
of a car. Or it could be given to the person that loves to share their knowledge with
others about genuine parts, such as motor components, chrome, or headlights on classics.
Overall, this award would bring the features of authenticity back to a more prominent
role in our club as Frank Moro did in the past. This year, the 2015 Frank Moro Memorial
was presented to Bob Watkins.
PRESERVATION AWARD
This award is given to someone with a passion for 1942 and older car. This person helps by
sharing knowledge or giving other assistance to club members with cars in that age range. The
2015 Preservation Award was given to Paul Hanson. Paul lives in Maine and was unable to
attend the Awards Banquet this year.

Prestige Award for vehicles 25 to 50 years old . This perpetual trophy for
the best vehicle that is at least 25 years old but not older than 50 in the given
season. It can be restored either by owner or professional as long as it is
original in appearance. The 2015 prestige award was given to Alfred &
Susan Magee for their 1966 Corvair.
SPRINGER TROPHY This is an award given to the person or persons that have done
outstanding service for the CVR organization. The award was donated by Mr. & Mrs. O. F.
Springer. It is presented annually and remains with the winner for one year. The Director is
excluded for consideration. This year the Springer trophy was presented to Richard Sitnik.

WALTER O MACILLVAIN AWARD.
This is given for the best article printed in the Winding Road .The selection is
made by the Vice Director who this year was John Johnson. The selection is
based on the overall best presentation of a CVR vehicle or event. This year , the
award was given to Zack & Jessica Hoffman for their marvelous write-up of the
Bradley Air Museum meet.
BUICK CUP
This trophy was donated by Cliff French & Joseph Wyatt. It is presented to the best
Buick in CVR for that year. This is based on the point system used for the season’s judging.
This year, the Buick Trophy was awarded to Chris & Corine Johnson for their 1941 Buick
Super Eight. Unfortunately, the Johnsons were not able to attend the awards banquet.
After ten years of judging (& eating cold or partial meet meals), Duane & Krista are
moving on. They have asked for members to step up and be trained. I was with them when
Frank Moro did step up. Is there anyone else who would be willing to be trained this year
and assume this judging position for the 2016 season? Many hands make light of work!
Please get involved.
