...For This, and Future
Generations
From Our Executive Director | Now and Forever
The measure of our success is not the number of acres we have preserved, or the miles of trails we maintain;
rather it is the quality of those places and the extent to which they enrich our daily lives. While natural areas
have an inherent worth regardless of their accessibility or “use,’’ it is the relationship between people and place
that makes our work dynamic.
As a case in point, consider the mile of new trails constructed on our Robinson Woods II preserve and Canter
Way easement. Only a few weeks ago on Saturday, volunteers stood waist deep in water and mud, flicking off
the occasional leech or leaf, bolting together 250-pound aluminum decking sections, which weeks prior had
been hand carried (by various pre-Colombian means) by yet more Saturday volunteers across new trails that
had—months earlier—been cleared by the eighth grade class hacking though the undergrowth in the barely
contained chaos of youthful exuberance.
To the rest of us, these trails and bridges simply appear as we walk with friends and companions through
the woods appreciating the fresh air and tranquil surroundings. Through our educational programs, our
stewardship workdays, events, and even our Board meetings, CELT endeavors to build a relationship to Cape’s
special places. We foster an interactive relationship with the land, because we need people to know, and to
appreciate these places, so that collectively, we can ensure that they will be cared for, not only now, but forever.
We thank all of you who have volunteered your time and talent on CELT’s behalf, and invite all community
members to participate in our mission.

CELT’s Year in Review | 2014 - The Year in Volunteering
“The true meaning of life is to plant trees, under whose shade you do not expect to sit.”
-Nelson Henderson, Farmer
As my two years as CELT’s President draw to a close, I reflect on how fortunate we are to have so many
enthusiastic, dedicated volunteers helping in so many areas. Volunteers—Board and committee members,
advisors, trail stewards, office helpers, walk leaders, and special event workers—are the true roots of CELT’s
success, and the branches that reach out and connect CELT’s mission with our wider Cape Elizabeth
community. With a dedicated staff of two, CELT counts on the help of many people throughout the year to
further its work of preserving and stewarding special places in Cape Elizabeth and of educating the community
on the value of those conserved lands. The rewards of volunteering for CELT are many: knowing you’re helping
to preserve Cape Elizabeth’s unique rural character, showing young children the wonders of nature in their
own backyards, feeling more connected to your local community, getting outside to improve and enjoy the
trails around town, and making new friends. I hope that you will consider volunteering—in whatever capacity
suits you. We would love to have you join us for a special event, a trail workday, a committee meeting, an adult
or children’s educational program, or a stint helping out in our office. Visit our website, call, stop by the CELT
office or email [email protected] to learn of the many different volunteer opportunities available.
We would be delighted to see you and have you join us in our efforts.
Outgoing CELT President, Kathleen Janick
Here are some of the ways in which volunteers supported CELT’s Mission throughout this past year:
Lands: CELT’s Lands Committee members began collaborating with the Cape Farm Alliance on tools
and resources to support farm viability, including land conservation. The Committee worked with the Maine
Farmland Trust, the Maine Department of Agriculture, and the Town of Cape Elizabeth to make resources for
farm viability available to Cape farmers. Committee volunteers also worked to strengthen the conservation of
Turkey Hill Farm, and continued to evaluate opportunities to identify future conservation projects in town.
Stewardship:
Throughout what has been our busiest stewardship year ever, CELT completed a major
overhaul of all of our land project files and land management plans, and updated documentation for our
29 conserved properties. Using grant funding connected with our national accreditation application, we
engaged outside expertise to assist in these efforts. Beginning with our 8th Grade trail project in May and
continuing through November, CELT completed the majority of our trail re-routing, new water crossings, and
trail construction at our Robinson Woods II preserve. The trail construction project involved more than 150
volunteers, without whom we could not have completed this work so effectively.
Education:
The creative, active, all-volunteer Education Committee continued a partnership with the
Cape Elizabeth schools by expanding and enhancing curriculum-based programs and presentations. The
Robinson Woods curriculum-based three-season walks for Pond Cove School’s 4th Grade took place for the
eighth consecutive year. In addition, volunteers led 1st Grade students on winter walks, awarded a grant to
the 1st Grade for Chewonki programs, held a high school-wide “Preserving a Place Apart” contest, and led
preschool walks in the fall and spring. Education volunteers also organized and offered adult programming,
through Community Services, which included volunteer-led walks, stand-up paddle-boarding excursions, movie
nights, book club meetings, and talks about Cape Elizabeth’s natural phenomena, including mushrooms, ferns,
wildflowers, birds, vernal pools, owls, and winter wildlife.

Membership & Development: Our Membership and Development volunteers continued to
reach out to the Cape Elizabeth community, holding several neighborhood gatherings to introduce community
members to CELT’s mission, and putting together a monthly e-newsletter to keep CELT members and friends
updated on CELT happenings throughout the year. Committee members and other volunteers also helped
grow and cultivate a Conservation Leadership Circle donor group of 56 members. Volunteers also developed a
number of policies and procedures to strengthen CELT’s sustainability as an organization tasked with preserving
and stewarding properties in perpetuity. This effort included the creation of a new Gift Acceptance Policy intended
to guide CELT and donors about various ways to support CELT’s mission, the establishment of CELT’s General
Endowment Fund, and the development of a new planned giving program, to be formally launched in 2015.
Special Events:
More than 50 volunteers helped to make our 7th
Annual Paint for Preservation event our most successful art auction and related
raffle yet. Volunteers helped organize and set up the event tents, tables and
chairs, assisted artists during the day, assembled, catalogued and photographed
the paintings, greeted auction guests, tended bar, served food, and displayed
paintings during the live auction, among other tasks. Nearly ninety volunteers
also helped at our 10th Annual Tri for Preservation, preparing and serving
breakfast for the athletes, and helping with race course signage, water stations, and
lifeguarding. The two events provided CELT with over $80,000 in net income,
which helps position CELT for the next conservation opportunity.
Finance:
Our volunteer Treasurer and Finance Committee members made a number of improvements to
CELT’s fiscal policies and practices this past year, which included a comprehensive risk management analysis
and a review of CELT’s insurance coverage. The Committee also supported CELT’s new planned giving initiative,
creating a General Endowment Fund and assisting in the development of CELT’s new Gift Acceptance Policy and
related procedures. The Committee reported monthly to the Board of Directors on the financial health of the
organization, completed an annual financial audit, and prepared a budget for our new fiscal year.
Governance/Accreditation: Thanks to volunteers on CELT’s Governance and Accreditation
Committees, CELT submitted its application to the Land Trust Accreditation Commission for national
accreditation, which it hopes to receive in early 2015. Committee volunteers also supported the hiring of a
new Membership and Development Manager in an ongoing effort to ensure that CELT has the capacity to
meet its organizational needs. Governance Committee members supported and evaluated the work of
CELT’s committees throughout the year, conducted an annual board self-assessment, developed a new policy
manual for the organization, and conducted an annual legal compliance audit and review of CELT’s Articles
of Incorporation and By-laws.

Planned Giving and Endowment

Preservation 2014
CELT’s long-term viability and sustainability is built upon strong programs, strong policies and practices,
and generous community support, which comes in many forms. We are proud to announce the creation of
three new initiatives developed to help you—our supporters—consider new ways of thinking about how your
financial support can help us to plan for the future.
CELT has...
1 Created a General Endowment Fund to enhance long-term financial stability
2 Developed a robust Planned Giving Program
3 Adopted a comprehensive Gift Acceptance Policy
Building an endowment to ensure that CELT can
honor its commitment to the perpetual care and
maintenance of our properties has emerged as a
critical need. We hope you will consider speaking
with us about how your financial support can help
achieve our long-term goals and responsibilities.
At the end of our past fiscal year, CELT’s Board
dedicated $25,000 to seed our newly created
endowment fund.
CELT Receives
Notice of a Recent Bequest
“We believe that all of us fortunate enough to
live in Cape benefit every day from the work that
CELT does, which goes beyond just intelligent land
stewardship. With an eye towards the past as well
as the future, CELT helps build community and
fosters a sense of shared responsibility for what
ultimately is public space to protect, as well as to
enjoy. When we recently updated our estate plans,
it was an easy decision to remember this wonderful
organization which literally is in our back yard.”
- Paul and Sarah Muscat
As a land trust with perpetual obligations to care
for the properties we own and protect, we are also
pleased to announce the creation of The Oak Society
to recognize those individuals and families who
have committed to include the Cape Elizabeth Land
Trust in their wills or estate plans and those who
have made substantial lifetime gifts to the General
Endowment Fund.
Complementing both of these new initiatives is our
Gift Acceptance Policy which outlines not only the
types of gifts CELT routinely accepts, but also serves
as a resource for you—our supporters, to help you
consider a wider range of giving options that can
directly support our ongoing operational needs, and
invest in our long-term health and sustainability,
while allowing donors to realize financial benefits.

Our Mission
The Cape Elizabeth Land Trust permanently conserves and provides stewardship for lands
cherished by our community – from shore lands to marshes, from farmlands to woodlands –
for the education, use and enjoyment of this and future generations.
Saving Cape’s Great Places Begins With Three Pillars of Support
CELT is a community-based, nonprofit organization sustained by the generosity of our members.
Over the past 29 years, CELT has built a solid, well-respected organization supported by a volunteer
board of directors, a two-person staff and three operational pillars: Land Preservation, Education
and Stewardship.
Land Preservation
Education
Stewardship
Support for Saving Cape’s
Great Places positions CELT to
take advantage of strategic
opportunities to conserve
significant land parcels valued
by our community.
Support for Saving Cape’s
Great Places enhances CELT’s
ability to deliver educational
programs that foster
appreciation of natural areas
and conserved lands.
Support for Saving Cape’s
Great Places helps CELT
build an expert stewardship
program capable of
maintaining lands permanently
entrusted to our care.
