KAUNAS
Kaunas is the most studentcentered city in Lithuania. Located
in the central part of the country,
it is surrounded by the two largest
Lithuanian rivers, the Nemunas
and the Neris. Kaunas City is wellknown for its unique museums.
One of them hosts more than 3,000
devils, another one is a sanctuary of
Lithuanian folk instruments and yet
another invites visitors to enjoy the
spellbinding melodies and paintings
of M.K. Čiurlionis.
Visitors to the city can stroll along the pedestrian
boulevard called Laisvės Alėja (Liberty Avenue)
admiring the historical monuments or perhaps
dive straight into the hustle and bustle of
seasonal celebrations. The city, which is often
called the capital of basketball, can take pride
not only in the local basketball team, BC Žalgiris
Kaunas, but also in other famous athletes, as
well as the artists who contribute to creating
the unique aura of the city. Architectural
masterpieces, serene and original sightseeing
trips—life in Kaunas will keep you on your toes.
Come and see for yourselves! And if you are
already here, we hope you have a memorable
stay in Kaunas.

CITY HISTORY
The village which grew into the City of Kaunas was
mentioned for the first time in chronicles in 1361. A
stone castle was built in the 14th century to repel the
forces of the Teutonic Order. Later, this castle became
an important element of the city’s defences. In 1408,
the City of Kaunas was granted the Magdeburg Rights by
Vytautas the Great. Ever since then Kaunas has grown
rapidly and its significance as a harbour and trading
centre with Western Europe increased. The first school,
public hospital and pharmacy were built in the 16th
century and, at the end of that century, Kaunas was
one of the best-developed cities of the Grand Duchy of
Lithuania.
In 1812, Napoleon’s army crossed the Nemunas River
near Kaunas. The city was destroyed twice during the
war. The industrial and trade areas underwent a boom
in development with the help of the railway, constructed
in 1862, and the first power plant which was launched in
1898., Further development of Kaunas came, however,
to a stop at the beginning of the First World War.
When the Russians took over Vilnius in 1919, the
National Board and the Ministers’ Office were established
in Kaunas. The Poles occupied Vilnius in 1920 and, as
a result, Kaunas became the temporary capital and
the most significant city of Lithuania. In 1920, the
Constituent Assembly of Lithuania, which laid the legal
grounds for the restored State, gathered in Kaunas.
During the years of independence, Kaunas expanded,
its population increased and the industry flourished.
The bus network was created in 1924 and the city water
supply system was constructed in 1928. These times of
prosperity ended, however, with the Soviet occupation
which brought the gravest damage upon the city.
When the independence of Lithuania was restored
in 1991, new possibilities for development and
international cooperation became available. At present,
Kaunas is the second largest city in Lithuania.

EVENTS
KAUNAS JAZZ FESTIVAL
April: www.kaunasjazz.lt
The first International Festival of Kaunas Jazz was organized
in 1991 by a small group of enthusiasts led by Jonas Jučas.
The aim of expanding the extent of Kaunas Jazz was already
explicit at that time. Later on, the Festival guests’ concerts
in other cities of Lithuania became an integral part of the
Kaunas Jazz Festival. Every year the Kaunas Jazz Festival
changes the image of the city – hundreds of cheerful people
fill the city streets and halls to enjoy the sounds of jazz.
The Kaunas Jazz Festival takes place at the end of April.
For several years Jonas Jučas, the organiser of the Festival,
used to end it with his traditional phrase–‘No more jazz!’.
It seems that people believed this statement only at the
end of the first Festival; subsequently this phrase meant a
traditional goodbye until next spring.
INTERNATIONAL SPORTING DANCES
CONTEST „GINTARINE PORA“
May: www.tautosnamai.lt
„Gintarine pora“ – the most famous contest of sporting
dances has deep traditions in Lithuania. The International
prestigious sport branch contest is organized in Kaunas
every year and attracts 500 dancers from Belgium, Holland,
the Czech Republic, Germany, Finland, Russia, Italy, Poland,
Estonia, Latvia and other foreign countries. Excellent judges
and educators are invited from all the above countries. The
contest continues for two days in six stages. The closing
event includes a concert and the award of laurels to the
winners. „Gintarine pora“ – is a junior dancers’ school and
a traditional show of art and sport, which gives Lithuania
prominence in the world. The initiators of the sporting
dance contest are esteemed coaches and judges from the
Lithuania Jūrate and Česlovas Norvaišos; the organizer is the
Kaunas cultural centre „Tautos namai“.
KAUNAS HANSEATIC DAYS
May: www.kaunas.lt
One of the most significant cultural events, now established
in Kaunas for several years is the celebration of the birthday
of the City of Kaunas. The Festival has already become a
popular tradition among citizens. The City of Kaunas has
a very important anniversary in 2016 – 608 years since
the city was granted Magdeburg Rights (equivalent to
autonomy from the King’s jurisdiction). Kaunas is now the
only Lithuanian city that is a part of the union of the New
Hansa cities, so that the mediaeval theme of the Festival
distinguishes it from festivals in all other Lithuanian cities.
The City welcomes all to join in with mediaeval culture,
music, dances, plays, games and crafts, as well as knights
fighting in an international tournament to win a sword of the
chief of the Lithuanian army.

EVENTS
KAUNAS CITY PUPILS’ SONG FESTIVAL
May or June: www.vmlr.lt
A theatrical Festival for children and youth choirs, as well
as instrumental groups and groups of folk and modern
dances, the Festival includes various types of arts, 4000
performers and 10000 participants.
BIKE SHOW & AUTO SHOW MILLENNIUM
June: www.bikeshow.lt
„Bike Show Millennium, Kaunas“ – is the greatest show
for bikers, aviators, stuntmen, musicians and their fans
in Lithuania. „Tornado spirit“ attracts more and more
participants from various countries. It is one of the most
impressive auto-moto shows in Lithuania with famous
musicians and dancers participating in the programme.
PAŽAISLIS MUSIC FESTIVAL
Three months of music (June–August): www.pazaislis.lt
During the greatest event of classical music in
Lithuania, the Pažaislis Music Festival, the audience can
traditionally enjoy concerts by world-famous performers
and premières by Lithuanian composers throughout
the three summer months. Since 1996, when the first
Pažaislis Music Festival took place, many of the world’s
music elite have visited Lithuania. The Festival’s eclectic
programme satisfies even the most sophisticated tastes –
from ancient music to jazz, from subtle chamber music
to grand vocal instrumental pieces, from new pieces of
modern music premières to impressive Lithuanian drama
performances in the vicinity of Kaunas Castle.
OPERETTA AT KAUNAS CASTLE
July: www.operetta.lt
This is a unique musical event in the open that attracts
audiences with various tastes. Light music, full of fun and
optimism, wonderful costumes and decorations, and the
performers’ professionalism have boosted the popularity
of the Festival. The Festival „Musical in Kaunas Castle“
takes place on July 6, the Day of Lithuania’s Statehood,
and is an outstanding highlight of the day. „Operetta at
Kaunas Castle“ is an original festival, the first of its kind
in Eastern Europe. This event includes not only popular
fragments of musicals and operettas, but also some new
pieces, never heard before, are performed by singers and
musicians from Lithuania and other countries.
19
EVENTS
INTERNATIONAL DANCE FESTIVAL „AURA“
September–October: www.dancefestival.lt
In 1989, AURA (Kaunas Modern Dance Theatre) organized
the first modern dance festival in Lithuania, and since then
has been considered to be an progenitor of modern dance
in Lithuania. In following years, about 1000 dancers have
performed on the stage of the Festival, and many modern
dance seminars have been organized. Dance groups from
different parts of the world, ranging from Japan to the
USA, have taken part in the Festival. Already traditional
and well‑known, the International Modern Dance Festival
is held in Kaunas every year in October. The Festival aims
at introducing various developments in modern dance,
one of the most popular forms of art in the Western world,
and performances of troupes and individual dancers from
all over the world.
THE INTERNATIONAL KAUNAS FILM
FESTIVAL
September–October: www.kinofestivalis.lt
The Festival shows recently released and widely acclaimed
films which reflect the current developments and trends
in cinema. Today, Kaunas IFF is one of Lithuania’s most
appreciated film festivals and the main film event in
Kaunas. The main priority of Kaunas IFF is a combination
of the artistic and social statements in film. The festival
maintains a strategy of presenting exclusively Lithuanian
or Baltic premières.
CHRISTMAS TREE LIGHTING FESTIVAL
AND TOWN CHRISTMAS
December: www.tautosnamai.lt
The Christmas event marathon starts in the town square
with lighting of the Christmas tree. Every year the main
city Christmas tree offers surprises with unusual and
non‑traditional decorative ideas. The lighting of the
Christmas tree is only the beginning of the Christmas
period because the City at Christmas is full of handmade
souvenirs and delicacies – and, of course, Santa Claus
welcomes visitors throughout December.
THE WHEELS OF TIME INTERNATIONAL
ANTIQUES AND FLEA MARKET
Those looking for an interesting and original ornament,
a postage stamp or a coin to add to their collections,
a longed-for picture to adorn a room or perhaps an
antique piece of furniture, will surely find it all at the
Kaunas Wheels of Time International Antiques and Flea
Market. This is a perfect place to admire many items
from the recent and long past, to expand your knowledge
of history and have a great time. The Market is held at
20
EVENTS
the URMAS Trade Town in Kaunas three times a year
and will be soon celebrating its 10th anniversary. Every
time the Market attracts a large number of antiques
collectors, dealers, numismatists, philatelists and sellers
of antique books from Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Poland
and other European countries. The Wheels of Time
International Antiques and Flea Market is held in March,
May and September. Over 300 traders come together
under one large roof. Visitors to the Market can share
their impressions about their newly‑acquired (albeit old)
items and their history having a great time with those of
like mind for the whole three days. The Festival also has
something to offer for automobile enthusiasts who can
admire awe-inspiring vintage vehicles from Germany and
England.

CAR BOOT SALES
Car boot sales are popular in Western Europe. People
come in their cars and sell goods straight from the boots.
This is typically perceived as a way to meet others and
spend your free time rather than a commercial activity.
Car boot sales offer everything people want to get rid off,
starting from household items and clothes and ending
with ornaments, various trinkets, pictures, etc. Anyone
who has unwanted items and wishes to sell or trade
them instead of throwing them out can participate in car
boot sales as a seller. Such sales are also popular among
young artists. Different from the so-called flea markets
which are already held in Lithuania, car boot sales are
not commercial. The people selling their goods there do
not do so on a regular basis; they do not earn their living
this way or receive a significant amount of income. The
goal of the car boot sales is to socialize, meet people
with similar thinking and simply have a good time rather
than make money. Car boot sales are held all year round
in the area of the URMAS Trade Town near the Office
Center 1000 from early morning every Sunday, every
Saturday – Griniaus g. 8 in Vilijampolė.

CULTURE
KAUNAS –
UNESCO
DESIGN
CITY
1
Launched in 2004, the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) aims to
strengthen cooperation with and among cities that have recognized
creativity as a strategic factor of sustainable development as regards
economic, social, cultural and environmental aspects.
By joining the Network, cities acknowledge their commitment to
sharing best practices, developing partnerships that promote creativity
and the cultural industrines, strengthening participation in cultural life
and integrating culture in urban development plans.
The UNESCO Creative Cities Network covers seven Creative fields:
Crafts and Folk Arts, Design, Film, Gastronomy, Literature, Media Arts
and Music.
In December, 2015 Kaunas has joined the UNESCO Creative Cities
Network and became the first city in Eastern and Western European
countries that received the Design City Status. Certainly, this will
contribute to the ambition of Kaunas Modernist Interwar Architecture
to join UNESCO World Heritage List.

The castle was built in the 14th century at the confluence of
the Nemunas and the Neris rivers with the purpose of repelling
the attacks of the Teutonic Order. Kaunas Castle was the first
stone castle in Lithuania and also the only one fortified with
two rows of defensive walls. A village was established around
this gothic defensive structure which, over time, developed
into the present City of Kaunas. The castle was first mentioned
in written records in 1361 when it was destroyed by the forces
of the Teutonic Order. The castle was rebuilt several times
but lost its significance in 1408 when the City of Kaunas was
granted Magdeburg Rights and the centre of the city was
transferred to the Market (Town Hall) Square of those times.
At present, Kaunas Castle hosts a branch of the Kaunas City
Museum; cultural events are frequently held in its vicinity.

days to cross to the other side (actually, of course, only
because of the different calendars used at each end). The
bridge was demolished twice during the World War II. It was
rebuilt in 1948 by the Architect L. Kazarinskis. The bridge
lifting mechanism is still used and important even today.

of independence. The construction works were interrupted
by the Soviet occupation. The building was seized and turned
into the Radio Factory after the war (later known as Banga).
In 1990, the church regained its primary purpose. The main
tower is 70 m high. Visitors to the church can go up to the

FORTRESS

HISTORY
At the end of the 18th century, when Kaunas became
the border post of Russia, the Tsar decided to transform
the city into a fortress, but the idea took shape only in
1871. Germany finally became united, and there was a
need to strengthen the western borders of the empire. In
1880, Tsar Aleksandr II ratified the Kaunas fortress plan,
covering an area of 25 km². The work started in 1882–89,
but construction went on until 1915.
STAGES OF CONSTRUCTION
Construction was carried out in several stages. First,
a defence circle consisting of 7 forts and 9 batteries,
and central fortifications were built. Construction of
administrative buildings in the city centre, reconstruction
and refinement of fortifications were executed later.
In 1903, construction of the ninth fort was planned,
followed by the second defence circle (65 km²) in 1913–
1917; construction of this was interrupted by World War I.

FORTRESS CHARACTERISTICS
The fortress consisted of forts, batteries, and the central
defence system. The second group of buildings included
storehouses for ammunition, gunpowder, weapons and
spare parts, as well as bomb‑shelters. There were also
food and grain storehouses. Barracks for soldiers were
built in Šančiai, Panemunė and Freda. Administrative
premises were built in the centre, including a dwelling
house for military engineers and a military telegraph
station. Utility buildings were added: stables, garages,
storehouses, and others. Lately, the fortifications have
been attracting increasing numbers of tourists from
Lithuania and abroad, because few defence systems have
survived unchanged in Europe as long as this.
CENTRAL FORTIFICATION
It consisted of a defence trench around the city with a
triple metal fence at the bottom, a rampart behind it
(the trench and the rampart had a curved shape, good
for shooting from the flanks), and casemate storehouses.
They were located in the areas of Aleksotas, Žaliakalnis
and Vilijampolė. In Aleksotas they ran from the funicular,
across the airport, the botanical gardens, and up to the
banks of the river Nemunas. In Žaliakalnis they ran from
the 7th fort, along Taikos Ave. and the present campus
of Kaunas University of Technology, up to the banks of
the Nemunas. In the area of Vilijampolė there were three
fortification points, later to become the eighth fort.

PLACES TO SEE
THE INTER-WAR
ARCHITECTURE:
1919–1940.
KAUNAS
35
36
An abundant Kaunas interwar architecture
accumulated over 20 years, its dense concentration
in the city is a unique phenomenon in Europe; in the
context of international modernism it reects both
the then Bauhaus style trends and unique style
of Lithuanian nationalism which distinguishes a
modern, high-quality Kaunas interwar architecture
from the European mainstream. Kaunas is the only
city in the world where so much of the style of the
buildings has survived to the present day.

ŽALIAKALNIS FUNICULAR
The central post building is one of the most
important buildings representative of the inter‑war
period – a contemporary centre of communication
constructed in 1930–1932. It is a very valuable symbol
of national modernistic architecture. Folk accents in the
building are reflected by wood carvings on window rims,
cement cornices, interior boasts of a ceramic floor laid with
a national weave texture. The architect was F.Vizbaras.
The Palace, built in 1937, is an extravagant
building of the late inter‑war period. It is distinguished
by its ‘national’ style and patriotic symbols. The palace
is made of local building materials which serve both for
representation of the state and for the public need. This
edifice is the location of the officers’ club and its decorative
architecture testifies to the honorific status of officers
during the inter‑war period. The architects of the building
were Stasys Kudokas, Kazys Kriščiukaitis and Jonas KovaKovalskis; the engineer was Anatolijus Rozenbliumas.
This building exemplifies the maturity of modern Lithuanian
culture. It is also a monument to one of the greatest lords
of mediaeval Lithuania. The palatial building represents
the identity of inter‑war architecture most vividly and
expressively in a harmony of the inter‑relationship
between modernism and tradition. Memorial Square, with
monuments to famous people or events associated with
independence, is close by. The architects were Vladimiras
Dubeneckis, Karolis Reisonas and Kazimieras Kriščiukaitis.
At the end of the 1920s and the beginning of the
next decade Kaunas experienced fast modernization. Much
attention was devoted to improving the infrastructure of
the city – water-supply, drainage and transport. While the
Žaliakalnis funicular was being built there was consultation
with a German specialist engineering company in Leipzig
(„Curt Rudolph Transportanlagen“). This company
prepared the project and manufactured the funicular;
electrical equipment was supplied by „AEG“ and the
chassis was acquired from the Swiss firm „Theodor Bell“.
The American Lithuanian company „Amlit“ in Kaunas made
the vehicles. It takes 1min 38sec to go from the bottom to
the top of the funicular. The Kaunas funiculars seemed in
the pre‑war years to be the brightest and unique signs of
leading technology, testifying to a fast‑growing city.

ROMUVA CINEMA
40
RESEARCH LABORATORY
39
This is the last cinema to start in free Kaunas.
The largest and the most modern cinema has 687 seats.
„Romuva“ is a unique heritage of Lithuanian cinema
history. It is the only one to have preserved its role
and structure to the present time. Preservation of this
building has been the result of a great public effort. The
architect was Nikolajus Mačiulskis (1940).
The laboratory was set up for research into raw
material and items of military production. This is an
international‑style building of functional architecture.
Built in 1933–1935. the laboratory was equipped with
the most modern facilities, produced in France. It had an
exclusive item – a specially installed traction console. The
chimneys on the roof became symbols of the building.
The architect was Vytautas Landsbergis-Žemkalnis.
41
MILK CENTRE
This is the most impressive contemporary
multifunctional commercial and residential equivalent
of inter‑war Kaunas. This palatial building was awarded a
bronze medal and diploma of honour in the international
exhibition ‘Art and Technique in Modern Life’ („Exposition
Internationale des Arts et des Techniques“) Paris, 1937.
The building is distinguished by its simplicity as well as its
expressive and commanding architecture. In the interim
period the ground floor was assigned to commerce: The
„Milk centre“ shop, milk bar and the Murali parlour. The
architect was Vytautas Landsbergis-Žemkalnis, 19311932.

THE BASILICA OF CHRIST’S
RESURRECTION
Undoubtedly the most exquisite example of sacred
architecture in inter‑war Kaunas, the church is
distinguished for its scale, urban situation and political
importance. This is the symbol of independence and
resurrection of the nation. The height of the tower is
63m. In Soviet times (1952) it was conveerted to a radio
factory. In 1990 it was returned to the Catholic Church. On
the 6th April 2015, it was reclassified as a small basilica.
It was designed by Karolis Reisonas (1933–1940).

BIRŠTONAS
Touches your heart. Naturally
One of the oldest balneological resorts in Lithuania,
established in the very heart of the country, is ideal for
visitors who appreciate experience and old treatment
traditions. The healing power of mineral water has
beckoned Lithuanian knights, writers, poets, painters
and musicians to visit Birštonas since ancient times...
All of them have left their footprint in this small and
cozy resort looped around with the Nemunas River and
surrounded by green forests. Today, Birštonas draws
travellers not only because of its modern treatment
facilities, sanatoriums and mineral water which is
widely known across Europe for its healing abilities, but
also due to the hospitality of hotels, restaurants, leisure
services and memorable events, as Birštonas is known
for being the Mecca of Lithuanian jazz.

LITHUANIAN
CUISINE
Yes, it is challenging, known for
abundant assortment of snacks,
but undoubtedly worth of your
attention. Mostly popular potato
dishes in Lithuania: “zeppelins”
(potato dumplings stuffed with meat
or curds, served with various sauces)
or potato pie (grated potato pie with
various fillings, spices and sauces).
Most probably, you have never tried cold pink
soup, called “šaltibarščiai“. One is mostly offered
to try it on a hot sunny day. You will not only
feel refreshed, but also cooled by it. Don’t forget
to taste the Lithuanian kvass (natural drink
made from bread) and beer. It is not necessary
to remember all dishes names, just ask for the
assortment of Lithuanian dishes at restaurant,
helpful staff will offer you the best they have. We
live only once so let’s take advantage of trying
the dishes we have never tasted. By the way, the
prices are really reasonable.
