C LUB M ESSAGES PRESIDENT ’ S M ESSAGE Greetings Lakewooders, It is hard to believe that we are approaching the midpoint of the year. Then again, at times the clock slows to a grinding halt. For example, Memorial Day traditionally marks the kickoff of tournament season at Lakewood with the Member-Member, which is one of the great golf events of the year. Unfortunately, there was no Member-Member this year, making this golfer stare at the clock and pleading with it to speed up. Memorial Day is a great time to reflect on sacrifice, especially for those of us who have had family members serve in our armed forces. We should be thankful for all that we have and for those that have truly sacrificed to enrich the rest of us. It also adds perspective – waiting for a golf course to open is not a sacrifice – it is an inconvenience. The work on the course continues with great urgency and more and more individual components are completed almost weekly. Sooner rather than later, these dots will connect and our course will open with great pomp and circumstance (or maybe just golf). The first hint of golf occurred this month with announcement of the Lakewood Invitational tournament dates. I hope you are watching the excellent videos that Gilbert is filming each week and circulating via his weekly email. If you are not receiving the email, you can go directly to YouTube and search for Lakewood Country Club. The course will have a new look and feel. New shots will be needed, old demons eliminated, and probably new demons will pop-up to take their place. I have little doubt that it will be spectacular. The continued patronage of our Members has the Club operating at or better than most of our budgeted projections. Club utilization continues to exceed our expectations, and each Member should thank the collective for keeping Lakewood strong. Our Members make Lakewood what it is – the best neighborhood country club in Dallas. It is easy to come to the Club when the food is great, the drinks are cold, and the fellowship is entertaining. To all of you who make Lakewood a place of happiness and fun on a daily basis, thank you. As told to me when I was a very new Member by an older esteemed Member, “Lakewood is a place of leisure, enjoy it”. Truer words have never been said. See you at the Club, Jeff Cash President Mother’s Day ~ Sunday, May 11, 2014 C LUB N EWS C LUBHOUSE C ORNER May gave us a day to honor our Mothers and to honor those that have fought, and died, to give us the freedom to be reading this today. The weather held off for the kickoff of the 2014 Pool Season, which allowed over 700 members and guests to enjoy the pool facility. The opening of the pool is always an exciting adventure that holds special meaning to me, since it is the pool that I learned to swim in and the job that put me onto the path that I am continuing to follow. With the opening of the pool, you will see many new faces and some returning to help this year. As with every year, there are some learning curves that the staff goes through, trying to make your experience at the pool the best that it can be. As summer gears up, we want to remind you of some quick ways to better help you enjoy your experience at the pool. • Members are limited to 5 guests, or less, per day. Anything above five (5) needs to be coordinated with our Event Coordinator, Sheila Rigelsky, at 214.821.1491 ext 202. • While the Club tries to be as accommodating as possible, orders from the main kitchen to the pool deck are not recommended, or vice versa. Chef Koval has expanded the Pool Snack Bar menu to try to appeal to a variety of tastes. It is recommended that pool dining continue coming from the Pool Snack Bar and Member dining come from the main kitchen, in order to help expedite your dining experience. • As a courtesy to your fellow members, please take only two towels per person. If you need additional or clean towels, please exchange for your used ones. This will help us launder them and have them back for other member’s enjoyment. Towels are to remain on the pool deck and must be turned into the Pool Desk, when leaving the facility. • While we want children to have fun, we do have to watch out for their safety, as well. Any child(ren) found outside of the pool gates, unattended, will be escorted back to the pool deck. We have to be extra careful this year with a construction site located just east of the pool gates. As I said, we want this to be a safe and enjoyable summer for all at Lakewood Country Club. Please do not hesitate to contact me if there is any way to make your Club experience more enjoyable at 214.821.1491 ext 203, or via e-mail at [email protected]. We look forward to serving you soon! T ENNIS N EWS F ROM THE C OURTS 2014 LCC TENNIS J UNIOR G RAND PRIX C IRCUIT Dear Tennis players and fans, We are looking forward to another summer to remember here at the Club! Our LTA end-of season luncheon was a blast as we honored the accomplishments of our various team and league players. In my 17 years as Director here, I have never seen more than four teams finish in the the top three in their divisions. Well, this spring it was five! ————————————————————————— June 6 We are all looking forward to lots of tremendous tennis at the Member-Member June 2022. Sign up now to ensure your spot! We will have three divisions for women and two for men. We are also most proud of our junior players — the warriors who represent the Club in red and orange ball competition. At press time, we are heading into playoffs for the orange ballers. One of our best sellers last year we have solid and stripe shirts and pullovers. Congratulations to John Stollenwerck on his qualifying for the Texas Amateur Championship. John shot 73 at Waterchase to win a spot for the Championship at Brook Hollow Golf Club June 12-15. Congratulations to the roster of Members who competed for Team Lakewood in the TGA League Play Matches this spring. Lakewood won our conference and will advance to the play offs at Horseshoe Bay May 29. Our team Captains are Tom White and Mike Stefanek. Peter Millar Swim Peter Millar Scott Roden is having great success on the Junior Circuit playing around the country. Scott recently won the U.S. Kids Texas Open at Horseshoe Bay. His scores of 65-73 on the Ram Rock course were good for a ten shot win over 30 boys from around the U.S. and Mexico. Very strong! Pool season is here and we have Peter Millar swim suits and casual shirts to match. Golf Course Update The course is progressing beautifully as summer approaches. The last major project, the re-shaping and dredging of the lake on #11 and the building of the new bridge, has been completed. The south side is near complete with some remaking sod to be installed. On the north side, cart paths are being completed along with work on #10, #11 and #16. We hope to announce a target opening date soon. The Dallas Morning News released their Texas Golf 2014 state rankings recently. Lakewood moved to #31 on the list, up from 44 last year. We are proud of our position and certainly believe the future is bright with the Coore/Crenshaw renovation in progress. I do want to begin to discuss, as we get nearer to the completion of our project, what the expectations should be in regard to course conditions. When we do open for play, there will still be many rough areas throughout the course. A tremendous amount of new sod, many acres of it, has been laid around bunkers, tees, water hazards and in areas where heavy equipment has worked. We will need this year and into the 2015 growing season to see the turf conditions that we expect. This is the first of my reminders. The course will be great and Mike Plummer, and his Staff, are working very hard to get it ready; however, please remember how much work has been done and that Mother Nature will need to help us out to get it all to grow in the way we hope. See you at the Wood! Gilbert Freeman, PGA Head Golf Professional New for our ladies is the Skechers golf shoe. Designed after their very popular walking shoe, is the Go Walk Golf. Basically the same upper with a golf sole, these shoes are very light weight and comfortable. We have four colors in stock. They sell for $89. Sketchers for Women RLX Shorts Other new items include Linksoul shorts in five colors. These lightweight shorts are great for summer and match with all sorts of shirt colors. We are back in the Texas Ranger shirt business. We have Nike Dri-Fit shirts with the Ranger T on the chest and Lakewood on the sleeve in six colors. Come by to see us and check out what is new. Nike Texas Rangers LWGA Bus trip to Rock Creek at Lake Texoma LWGA – L ADIES ’ G OLF N EWS The pictures here are from our fun bus trip to Rock Creek at Lake Texoma the end of April. Some people brought guests and we also joined up with Brookhaven Country Club, so we had a great group. We had a blast and hope to do it again next year! In May, we had a fun day playing with the ladies at Brookhaven. Thanks to Tony, their pro, for helping us set this up. Pedie driving the bus! As I have said before, our schedule is a moving target so there is not much else to report right now. The spring golf clinics were very helpful and those who participated got a lot out of them, thanks to our Pros! As events develop, Bess or I will send out an email to the group letting you know what is scheduled. See you on the course(s)! FUN FACTS OF THE MONTH 1. Water hazards are no walk in the park for fish, turtles, frogs or gators either! Leah, Julie, & Bess 2. Golf is the perfect thing to do on Sunday because you always end up praying a lot! 3. An American named Ab Smith coined the term “birdie” in 1899. Thrilled with his performance, he said it was a “bird of a shot.” Gail Keene Publicity Chairman Ladies’ Golf Association Gilbert & Ryan —————————————— In May we celebrated Claudette’s 80th birthday! The reception was held at Carmen’s house and we loved getting to hug and honor Claudette on her big day! What a blessing and inspiration she is to us all. As you can see, she has gone from a darling majorette to one of our favorite golfers. ———————————————————————————— Gail & Tony from Brookhaven J.
