Colt Cadets Drum &
Bugle Corps is coming
to Eagle Grove
The Colt Cadets Drum &
Bugle Corps was founded in 1967.
They are the younger sibling of
the Colts Drum & Bugle Corps.
The majority of its members are
in middle school and high school.
The Colt Cadets are one of the few
cadet corps in the country. The
two corps work in tandem, with
the Colt Cadets grooming many
members for the World Class corps.
The Colt Cadets foster character
development
by
challenging
and teaching in ways that build
confidence, self-discipline, work
ethic and teamwork.
A prominent and successful
collaboration of organizations,
such as the Colts and Colt Cadets,
are expensive to operate. All of
the funds are self-generated. They
receive little in the way of federal,
state or local funds, and they do
not receive United Way funding.
Six percent of the money comes
from fundraising projects by the
Colts Booster Club Forty-two
percent from membership fees
from the Colts and Colt Cadets.
Nineteen percent comes from
fees earned by the Colts and Colt
This is Justin Sampson’s
second year with the Colt
Cadets.
His parents, Mark
and Ann Sampson, are excited
to have him and the Corps
make a stop in Eagle Grove
this summer. They invite you
to come out and watch them
practice. Photo submitted
Cadets in the summer. Seven
percent is from profits made
during the annual Music On The
March shows and souvenir sales.
The other twenty-six percent is
from direct donations and support
from businesses and individuals
In 2006, the Colt Cadets were
named Most Improved Corps in
DCI Open Class. In 2009, the
corps reached DCI Open Class
Semifinals for the first time, and
in 2010, became a DCI Open
Class Finalist (among the top 12 in
their division) for the first time in
their history, and have continued
to finish as Open Class Finalists
ever since.
The Colt Cadets travel
throughout the summer to parades
and competitions in the Midwest,
performing for more than 75,000
people. Travel begins in late June
through early August, with one
week break to allow for family
and other activities. They will
cap off their season at Lucas Oil
Stadium (home of the NFL Colts)
in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Justin Sampson, son of Mark
and Ann Sampson, began his
journey with the Colt Cadets last
year and has returned for his
second year. Andrew Powell, son
of Joe Powell, traveled with Mark
and Ann last year and watched
Justin and his corps compete
several times and knew this was
something he also wanted to
pursue. This is Andrew’s first year
with the corps. The boys have
been practicing with the corps
since January! They moved into
their full-time housing location in
Dubuque on June 12, 2015.
“We are excited to announce
that the Colt Cadets will be coming
to Eagle Grove,” said Mark and
Ann Sampson.
They will be arriving in Eagle
Grove around 2 a.m. on Wednesday
July 29. They will be housed in the
elementary building and will be
practicing all day Wednesday and
most of Thursday the 30th before
they head off to Minnesota for
another competition. Community
members are welcome and
encouraged to stop by the practice
football fields, bring a lawn chair
and watch the corps practice. It is
not uncommon for these corps to
practice 12 hours a day OUTSIDE,
rain or shine. Their daily practice
schedule, when they are not on the
road competing, is something like
this:
8:00am - Wake, Breakfast
9:00 - Rehearsal
Noon - Lunch
1:00 - Rehearsal
5:30 - Dinner
6:30 - Rehearsal
10:00 - Snack, Pack & Load
Equipment
11:15 - Lights Out
The Colt Cadets are very
excited to announce they will
be putting on a show for the
community Thursday evening,
July 30 (approx. 7:0 p.m.). Exact
time and field location will
be announced as time draws
nearer. There will be a free-will
offering at the entrance for the
performance and any donations
are greatly appreciated. Watch for
more information in next week’s
paper about the Colt Cadets and
their upcoming show here in
Eagle Grove.

Weekly Weather Report
The Wright County Fair Parade was as great as ever. Their
were floats, classic cars, clowns, barnyard animals, antique
tractors, and patriotic Americans like this dad and his little
girl who are obviously proud to be an American.
Clowing around at the parade
The Shriners proved that you’re never too old to be silly, and to enjoy the humor of a clown. This
clown was happy to stop and pose for a picture with this Rotary Senior Living resident before
moving along the parade route of the Wright County Fair on Wednesday, July 8. Despite the route
change, many Rotary Senior Living residents were still able to see the parade thanks to being
bussed over to Broadway. Photo by Kim Demory

Last year’s event was such a
success, that coordinator Nancy
Rosendahl and the Wright County
Fair Board decided to hold the event
again this year. Sixty-two veterans,
along with family and community
members, gathered at the free stage on
Friday, July 10 for the second annual
Honoring Our Veterans program.
Rosendahl was thrilled with the
turn-out, but noticed that some of the
military men and women who were
in attendance last year were not this
year. She believed it was because they
thought that since they had received
recognition last year, they shouldn’t
come again this year and receive a
new token of appreciation. On the
contrary, Rosendahl stressed that
those who were in attendance last year
deserve to be recognized many times,
along with the new veteran faces she
saw in the crowd. She thanked all of
them for coming, and they were all in
for a very special treat.
The program began with the
presentation of the Flag, followed
behind by numerous Wright County
4-H members carrying smaller flags
behind them. Watching the sea of
Red, White, and Blue waving as they
walked from the Show Arena to the
free stage area was breath taking.
The crowd stood in silence. Some
saluted. Some teared up. Others
smiled with pride.
The crowd listened as Eagle
Grove local, Tessa Yackle, sang the
“Star Spangled Banner,” and then
the program began. There was the
folding of the flag, with each fold
being described in detail as to what
it stood for. Supervisor Stan Watne
read a poem entitled “Old Glory.” If
you’ve never heard it, look it up. It
reminds us that our Flag has seen
both good and bad, flew in times of
peace, and wrapped wounded soldiers
in times of war.
The guest speaker of the evening
was Eagle Grove High School
Gavin Sandvig
graduate from the class of 1993,
Gavin Sandvig.
“It’s humbling to be back in
Eagle Grove for this event,” he said.
He went on to say that he had
many good memories of the Wright
County Fair, and spent many summers
enjoying it, and even helping prepare
for it by painting posts, etc. But he
wasn’t there to talk about himself and
his military achievements - which are
great, but this Iraq and Afghanistan
veteran who was part of Iowa’s
largest deployment since WWII,
wanted to talk about what it means
to be a veteran. Some show visible
scars. Other scars are hidden, known
only on the inside to the soldier. He
went on to tell the men and women in
attendance that as veterans, they are
the heros, and so are their families,
for the many sacrifices they have all
made.
“Thank you means a lot (to a
veteran),” said Sandvig. “I love that
I serve this State. I love that I serve
this Nation, and God willing, I’ll do it
for 10 more years.”
Among
the
veterans
in
attendance were 38 Army/National
Guard members, 12 Navy members,
nine Air Force members, and three
marines.
Sterling Anderson was the second-oldest veteran in attendance
at the second annual Honoring Our Veterans event of the Wright
County Fair. Fair Manager Tricia Rosendahl also presented him
with a flower, compliments of Eagle Grove Greenhouses, Inc.
Anderson is 90-years-old.

A few of the 62 Wright County veterans recognized for their
service during the Honoring Our Veterans Program.
This moment was simply breathtaking as Supervisor Stan Watne waited to begin the reading of
“Old Glory,” followed by the folding of the flag.
Emotions came through for many veterans during the ceremony.
Saluting the noble and the brave.
Thank you to all who have served.

4-H Safe Room ribbon cutting held
The Executive Committee of the Iowa 4-H Foundation Board joined major donors
to officially dedicate the tornado Safe Room at the Iowa 4-H Center on July 1.

Iowa 4-H Foundation dedicates Tornado Safe Room
In 2008, a deadly tornado struck
a Boy Scout camp in western Iowa.
In response to the tragedy, the
Iowa 4-H Foundation committed to
constructing a tornado safe room at
the Iowa 4-H Center in Madrid to
protect campers in the event of severe
weather. The facility was officially
dedicated on July following the
completion of construction this past
fall. 4-H supporters came together to
celebrate this space and experience
camp at the Iowa 4-H Center.
“The safety of campers at the Iowa
4-H Center is paramount and we
know that this facility will offer peace
of mind to campers and families
alike,” said Albert Grunewald,
Executive Director of the Iowa 4-H
Foundation. “This project was the
result of the vision of many and we
are thankful to our supporters whose
contributions helped fill this need for
campers.”
While the ribbon cutting served as
the official opening of the tornado
Safe Room, the facility has already
been used during a recent severe
weather event. Over 100 campers
took shelter in the Safe Room while
a tornado touched down near Ogden
on May 17.
The Tornado Safe Room can
accommodate 175 people and can
withstand sustained winds of up
to 250 mph. The facility is an
additional resource for campers
and is a component of the overall
emergency management plan for the
Iowa 4-H Center.
The Iowa 4-H Foundation is a
501(c)3 nonprofit organization
and provides the private financial
resources to develop and deliver
quality 4-H youth programs
throughout the state of Iowa. These
opportunities help young people
enhance their ability to use critical
thinking, leadership, communication,
and social skills—tools that will
give them a competitive edge in their
future endeavors.
DID YOU KNOW?
A cow can climb up the stairs, but cannot climb down.
This is because her knees cannot bend properly.
With several, but not all, of
the affected landowners present
the Wright County Board of
Supervisors received an amended
engineers report on DD#35 at this
Monday’s meeting. Assuming their
role as drainage trustees, they also
met with drainage clerk Deb Lukes
and Dave Johnson, legal counsel for
them on drainage matters.
David Cook of McClure
Engineering handed out copies
of the report, and presented the
reasons why it became necessary.
“It looked like we were settling
on option five (open ditch), but our
investigation north of 200th Street
revealed the elevation being deeper
than we had planned,” said Cook.
“The cost will then be more. When
you have to deepen it, you need to
also go wider to maintain the two
to one side slope. To achieve that,
the excavation volume will nearly
triple.” He explained that the
total cost estimate would go from
$107,000 to $179,000.
“Why are we not looking
at option four now?” asked
a landowner in section 28
representing the Julia Gordon Trust.
“You’re taking perfectly good land
out of production for something
that may not work.” Attorney
Gary Berkeland, representing one
of the parties, was also present.
“The change in elevation, from the
original report, changes this project
substantially and it’s unfortunate,”
said Berkeland. “Does this project
even give enough benefit now to do
it?”
Johnson then suggested Cook
come back next week, with the
hearing date possibly set at that
time. It was requested he bring cost
estimates on the change of the ditch
along with the easement payment
amount and the total number of
acres needed for the easement. This
would be regarding the removal of
some of the access road for that
property. The trustees could then
possibly approve the amended
report and set a hearing date.
Trustees Stan Watne then
expressed his frustration with this
entire drawn-out matter. “Maybe
Ames’s (landowner making the
original request) should just put an
inlet on their own property with a
40-inch tile to drain water into the
road ditch (Uptagraph Avenue) and
to the creek and be done with it,” said
Watne. “It will easily be cheaper.”
“Then just a tile easement would be
required,” added Berekland.
After being made clear of
the wording for the motion and
vote by Johnson, who recorded
the proceedings for the record,
Trustee Rick Rasmussen motioned
to terminate consideration of all
proposals from the engineer, in
that the landowners present don’t
believe the cost-benefit ratio is of
significant inport to make it feasible
and desirable by the trustees to
proceed at this time due to them
not benefitting from it.” It was
unanimously approved, so no
hearing date will be set.
Courtney
Stewart
with
Wright County Transit presented
the contracts with both MIDAS
Council of Governments and the
cities of Eagle Grove and Clarion
for bus service. She reported the
expenses stayed about the same
for the past year, and that was even
with completion of the new transit
building. Total revenue, minus
expenses, showed a positive balance
of $49,000. There were 15.308 total
riders, with 42 extra trips making
for a grand total of 15,454 riders.
“We have very good drivers,
and we really appreciate what they
do,” said Stewart. She explained
that there were just a few changes to
the county contract, which included
specific county service hours, the
fare schedule for the general public
and the addition of the training
sessions for drivers as required by
MIDAS. A separate equipment user
agreement with MIDAS for the
leased buses was also signed by the
Board.
County
Engineer
Adam
Clemons presented some current
items specific to Secondary Roads.
The new motorgrader is being
readied for use at the Clarion shed,
and a heavy haul tandem-axle semi
is being prepared for use as well. His
crew received a demo unit tractor
and bat-wing mower, with the
original tractor/mower lease going
thru Diamond Mowers. “This is
still a lease to own,” said Clemons.
“I do see the need in having two
mowers, but want the tractor to have
a loader for multi-use purposes.”
He told the Board that the two new
Chevy pickups, which will go to the
road superintendent and the bridge
foreman, have now arrived with

In other action the Board:
-heard an annual report from
Disability Services Coordinator Jen
Sheehan. She told the Board that this
past fiscal year ended comparably to
the previous one, and that she will
be revising the general assistance
policy in the near future. “We’ll
connect them to other resources
whenever we can,” said Sheehan;
-heard an annual update from
Angela Wesselink on the Parent
Connections program. She conducts
the parent education classes, with
the entire program overseen by
Sheehan. There are six to seven
classes held throughout each of
the counties served (Hamilton,
Humboldt and Wright). They’re
also planning another Zombie Run,
which was very successful last year,
for this October at the Eagle Grove
Golf Course. All proceeds are used
to help prevent child abuse. “Rates of
abuse are high in all three counties,
with Wright County number two in
the state,” said Wesselink. “You do
good work,” responded Watne;
-reviewed
and
approved
the America’s Renewable Fuels
Proclamation as requested last week.
It states, in part “We call on the
2016 Presidential candidates of both
parties to support the continuation
of the Renewable Fuels Standard,
and we invite them each to learn
more about the industry by visiting
with farmers, people working in
the ethanol industry and everyday
Iowans impacted by this policy”;
-appointed Sandy McGrath,
Caye Chelesvig and Warren Clausen
to the Wright County Magistrate
Appointing Commission for a term
expiring December 31, 2020;
-received the quarterly revenue
report from the Wright County
Auditor’s office.

health advocate should have been
Alice Warner, not Porter. The

Sweet Treats Homemade Ice
Cream stand returns to Wright
County Fair
By Austin Lich
For the Wright County Fair
Sweet Treats is exactly what it’s
name implies, a sweet treat, but for
the owners of this little backyard
Ice cream stand, it’s much more.
From speaking with one of the
owners, Mike Miller, he said that
he greatly enjoys the fair. “We get
great support from the people here
and we always have a line,” said
Mike. Mike and his wife, Jan, are
from Jewell. They were here at the
Wright County Fair last year and
came back this year for the second
time, and with a menu as diverse as
theirs, you can’t blame the fair for
wanting Sweet Treats back. They
have flavors such as cookie dough,
many types of cherry variations,
mint chocolate chip, and the basics
like chocolate and vanilla. They
did homemade ice cream because it
makes them different than other ice
cream stands. While they were at

the fair they sold waters alongside
their ice cream because of the nasty
heat.
With the Wright County Fair
being one of the many stops at area
fairs for Sweet Treats, they get a lot
of public interaction with some of
the wonderful people. “People are
the best part about the fair, said
Mike, “getting to know some of the
other vendors and staff is just great.”
To see all the location Sweet Treats
plans to be at this year, visit their

com or their facebook page.
Back in Jewell they have a small
backyard style ice cream shop that is
only open in the evenings at 6 p.m.
to 9 p.m. from May to September.
This shop is located at 918 Edwards
Street in Jewell. Mike and Jan love
meeting new people so stop on by
and see them for some homemade
ice cream that is sure to tame the
summer heat.

We Remember Our Loved Ones
Sharron C. Banwell, 76, Eagle Grove
Sharron Banwell, 76, of Eagle
Grove, passed away Thursday, July
9, 2015, at Iowa Specialty Hospital
in Clarion.
Funeral services for Sharron
Banwell were held on Monday,
July 13, at 6 p.m., at Ewing
Funeral Home in Clarion with Tim
Hartman, an elder from the Mason
City congregation of Jehovah’s
Witnesses, officiating. Burial will
be held at a later date at Rose Hill
Cemetery in Eagle Grove.
Sharron Colleen (Wiltse) Banwell
was born July 22, 1938, to Myron
and Florence Wiltse in rural
Charles City. Sharron was raised
and educated in the Charles City
and Nashua areas, graduating from
Nashua High School in 1956.
Following high school, Sharron
worked various jobs and raised
several children of previous
marriages before meeting and
marrying the love of her life, Bruce

their home in Williams for eight
years, prior to moving to Eagle
Grove, where they have resided ever
since.
In July of 1971, Sharron was
baptized as a member of the
Jehovah’s Witnesses, living out the
rest of her life as a faithful sister.
Sharron enjoyed scrapbooking,
card making, and cooking; she was
famous for her potato salad, lasagna,
and rhubarb pie recipes.
She
collected owl figurines and loved
her schnauzer, Candy. She also
enjoyed watching Ellen, The Voice,
Let’s Make a Deal and The Price
is Right. She loved roller coasters,
Sharron Banwell
dancing, and listening to music.
More than anything, Sharron
loved taking care of her family.
She was a faithful and loving wife,
mother, grandmother, and greatgrandmother. She showered her
family with unconditional love, and
everyone that met her is better for
having known her.
Sharron is survived by her
husband, Bruce, of Eagle Grove;

Different types of perennials
By Richard Jauron and
Kendall Evans
Perennials are beautiful plants
that live three or more years, die in
the ground each fall and return in
the spring. There are many different
types of perennials. Depending on
the perennial, it might require a
certain type of planting site to grow
successfully.
Horticulturists with Iowa State
University Extension and Outreach
identify different types of perennials
and planting sites where perennials
can grow successfully. To have
additional questions answered,
contact ISU Hortline at 515-2943108, or at [email protected].
Which perennials grow well in
wet soils?
When selecting perennials, it’s
important to choose plants that are
appropriate for the planting site.
Perennials that grow well in moist
to wet soils include: sweet flag
(Acorus calamus), black snakeroot
(Actaea racemosa), Jack-in-the-pulpit
(Arisaema triphyllum), goat’s beard
(Aruncus dioicus), swamp milkweed
(Asclepias incarnata), turtlehead
(Chelone species), Joe-pye weed
(Eupatorium purpureum), queenof-the-prairie (Filipendula rubra),
rose mallow (Hibiscus moscheutos),
Japanese iris (Iris ensata), yellow
flag (Iris pseudacorus), cardinal
flower (Lobelia cardinalis), obedient
plant (Physostegia virginiana), and
spiderwort (Tradescantia spp.).
Which perennials grow well in
dry soils?
Perennials that tolerate dry soils
include: yarrow (Achillea spp.),
wormwood (Artemisia spp.), butterfly
weed (Asclepias tuberosa), false blue
indigo (Baptisia australis), threadleaf
coreopsis (Coreopsis verticillata),
purple
coneflower
(Echinacea
purpurea), blanket flower (Gaillardia
x grandiflora), showy stonecrop
(Hylotelephium spectabile), blazing
star (Liatris spicata), catmint
(Nepeta racemosa), Russian sage
(Perovskia atriplicifolia), moss phlox
(Phlox subulata), black-eyed Susan
(Rudbeckia fulgida), goldenrod
(Solidago hybrids), lamb’s ear
(Stachys byzantina), aromatic aster
(Symphyotrichum oblongifolium)
and ornamental grasses.
What are some good low
maintenance perennials?
All perennials require maintenance.
Common maintenance chores are
watering, fertilizing, pinching,
staking, deadheading, dividing, and
providing winter protection. Some
perennials require frequent attention
through the growing season. Others
require minimal care.
Low maintenance perennials for
sunny locations include: butterfly
weed (Asclepias tuberosa), false blue

Summer concerts continue
The weekly Sunday night band
concerts by the Karl L. King
Municipal Band will continue in
Oleson Park for two more weeks in
July. Beginning at 7:30 p.m., these
concerts are held at the Karl L. King
Band Shell. There is no admission
charge, courtesy of the City of Fort
Dodge.
An ice cream social begins the
evening around 6:30 p.m., courtesy
of the Good Shepherd Lutheran
Church. Persons attending these
concerts are reminded to bring along
their own lawn chairs or blanket,
since no seating is provided.
Conductor Jerrold P. Jimmerson,
along with Assistant Conductor Dr.
David Klee, will be leading the Band
on July 19 on an “Around the World”
tour. No passports are required,
however!
A variety of march music will
be heard, including Karl King’s
Canton Aero Club, Pierre Leeman’s
March of the Belgian Paratroopers,
William Latham’s Brighton Beach,
and Johann Strauss’ Radetzky March,
Op. 228.
In addition, Karl King’s German
Melodies Waltz is on the program,
along with King’s fast-paced galop,
Emporia. On the classical side will
be three movements from French
composer and conductor Alexandre
Luigini’s Ballet Egyptien, written in
1875, as well as Percy Grainger’s
beautiful Australian Up-Country
Tune, which was first sung at
Grainger’s wedding in 1928.
Guest soloist this week will be
Dr. David Klee, principal flute and
piccolo player with the King Band, as
well as the Assistant Conductor. He
will be playing The Swiss Shepherd,
by P. Morlacchi. He will then be
joined by the other members of the
Flute section—Jennifer Littlejohn
from Clarion, and Megan Benz from
Manson—for some Latin American
sounds with Beguine for Flutes.
Klee is also principal flute with the
Fort Dodge Area Symphony, and
performs with the Comedia Musica
Orchestra in Fort Dodge.
Dr. Klee is presently Associate
Professor of Music and Director
of Jazz Studies/Music Production
& Technology at Buena Vista
University in Storm Lake. He holds
a Doctor of Musical Arts in Flute
Performance from the University of
Georgia, a Master of Music from the
University of South Carolina, and a
Bachelor of Arts in Music Education
from Mercer University.
On the lighter side will be Paul
Yoder’s tribute to the city of Chicago
with Rush Street Tarantella, and a
special tribute to the Rodgers and
Hammerstein musical, Carousel,
which is celebrating its 70th
anniversary this year. This musical
debuted on Broadway in 1945, and
has had several revivals since that
time. Several songs from that show
are included in this medley, from “If
I Loved You” to “You’ll Never Walk
Alone.”
These summer concerts always
close with the playing of our National
Anthem, The Star-Spangled Banner.
In case of inclement weather at the
starting time, the concert may be
cancelled.
Global Compassion Network
to build Safe T Home® along
the RAGBRAI route
Global Compassion Network—
based in Eagle Grove and founded by
an Iowa farmer in 2011—is gearing
up to build the Sukup Safe T Home®
in each overnight town along the
RAGBRAI route. A Safe T Home®
is a highly modified grain bin turned
into housing for displaced families in
Haiti. GCN has built nearly 150 Safe
T Home® in Haiti alone, 10 in Peru
that are used as a bible camp, and 10
in Kenya to house missionaries.
It takes between 4-6 hours to build
a Safe T Home® and about two to
take it down.
Global Compassion Network
also has a Domestic Disaster Relief
team that responds to disasters
in the Midwest. In 2013, GCN
helped Wayne and Debi Sadler of
Correctionville, Iowa, after an EF4
tornado destroyed their farm. The
Sadlers will be joining GCN during
RAGBRAI where they will help
build the Safe T Home® and share
their story.
In addition, GCN will also have
a team of bikers, including 77year-old Bob Hibma of Sibley who
volunteers on GCN’s Domestic
Disaster Relief team. While Hibma
didn’t start riding until he was 60,
the past few years he has completed
numerous races including the 400mile Natchez Trace Parkway ride
from Nashville, Tenn., to Jackson,
Miss., this past April.
About Global Compassion
Network
Founded in 2011 in the wake of
a devastating earthquake in Haiti
by Ken DeYoung (Iowa farmer and
pilot) and Terry Baxter (Iowa pastor
and missionary), Global Compassion
Network is a faith-based nonprofit
headquartered in Eagle Grove that
is most known for the Sukup Safe
T Home®, small, highly modified
grain bins which serve as homes for
displaced families rebuilding their
lives after disaster.
Global Compassion Network has
built three villages, a school, medical
and dental clinic, three orphanages, a
widows and infants village, and two
churches in Haiti, Hidden Creeks
Bible Camp, an Agricultural Center
in Peru, housing for missionaries
in Kenya, supports orphanages and
pastors in India, and also responds to
domestic disaster relief in the U.S.
More than 400 Ambassadors have
traveled on a mission trip through
Global Compassion Network. Learn

Jennifer’s Produce Tidbits
Welcome back to Produce Tidbits. I apologize for the lack of an article
for the last couple of weeks, my husband Jeff and I were on vacation and
unfortunately no one else writes the
article while I am gone. We enjoyed
a motorcycle trip to Branson, Mo., as
well as Eureka Springs, Ark. It was
really hot down there, but we had
a great time enjoying the sights as
usual.
Back to produce! I received a
letter from “Jake’s” Sweet Corn from
Thompson, Iowa, with a tentative
date of around July 19 thru July 24,
for the first arrival of IOWA sweet
corn. Of course, that all depends on
the amount of rain and warm weather
that we continue to receive. I am so
ready for an ear of Iowa sweet corn
smothered in butter with a sprinkle
of salt! I can almost already taste
it! I will keep you posted on this.
Of course, until then we continue to
receive corn from Georgia that has
been pretty tasty, too.
I have had many asking about Colorado peaches. They are not listed in
my produce catalog yet. We are still only receiving California and South
Carolina peaches currently. As soon as they are available, I will be ordering
them in. Alberta Faye canning peaches were scheduled to be delivered
this past Monday, and this all depends on the condition they come into our
warehouse in. Some of you might remember last year that our warehouse in
Boone turned the whole shipment away because of the condition they were
in. We will have a limited supply, so if you are interested in them you should
give us a call for availability.
Blueberries have been plentiful and at an exceptional price. We are
currently receiving Arkansas Red Ripe Tomatoes that have been looking
pretty good, too!
Don’t forget on these hot summer days when nothing seems to look good,
we continue to have fresh cut mixed fruit that is always tasty on a HOT
summer day.
If you don’t see a particular size of bowl you want, just ask a produce
worker, and we will cut one to your liking.
Check out all the wonderful produce items that we have in our Produce
Department at Fareway, where we are ALWAYS BEST AT FRESH! And
once again, please excuse our mess as we continue the remodeling in our
store! It will be WONDERFUL for our customers when it’s complete! Have
a super fantastic week, and until next time, good-bye!

Shame on fair
parade route
Letter to the Editor:
What has happened to our society?
I don’t know who is responsible for
the parade route change, but no one
wants to accept the responsibility.
Whoever, I just want to say “shame
on you!” Those seniors at the Rotary
home, both north and south, look
forward to this event every year.
Many of those seniors have already
given up so much and have so little
to look forward to, and watching the
fair parade was one of those things.
I was told “Well, they have vans to
transfer them!” Yes, that’s true, but
not all can go in the vans.
As far as liability, there’s an
umbrella policy that would cover
any route.
Again, I just want to say, “shame,
shame!” Hope this will give someone
something to think about next year.
Sincerely,
Connie Riley

Free sunscreen along
RAGBRAI route for third year
Thousands of cycling enthusiasts
are busy double-checking gear,
squeezing in last-minute training
rides, and anticipating fun at the
43rd Register’s Annual Great Bike
Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI), July
19-25. With all the planning it takes
to prepare for a RAGBRAI ride, it
is easy to forget one essential—
even lifesaving—safety precaution:
sunscreen.
Roughly 10,000 cyclists will
ride at least a portion of this year’s
RAGBRAI route; most will ride the
entire seven days. That adds up to
many hours directly in the hot Iowa
summer sun. Exposure to ultraviolet
(UV) rays from the sun and artificial
sources is the greatest risk factor
for melanoma, the deadliest form
of skin cancer. With 840 new
cases of melanoma expected to be
diagnosed in Iowa in 2015, several
Iowa organizations are making sure
RAGBRAI riders don’t get stuck
without protective sunscreen.
The Iowa Cancer Consortium, the
Iowa Department of Public Health,
local cancer centers, and other
organizations across the state have
partnered to provide free sunscreen
each day at the mid-day Beekman’s
Homemade Ice Cream stand, an

Cougars shut Lady
Eagles down in 11-0 loss
SPORTS
Eagle Grove Eagle
Only manage one base hit all night
BY LES HOUSER
[email protected]
After scoring runs in bunches
several times during this season, the
Eagle Grove softball team couldn’t
hardly buy a base hit or get anything
going against a good Manson
Northwest Webster team here last
Wednesday night. The Class 2A
regional opener finished with an 11-0
Cougar win as they advance, leaving
the purple and gold to wonder what
might have been after a nice 20-plus
win season came to an abrupt halt.
“We started by hitting the
ball hard, but most were hit right at
the defense,” said head coach Jim
McLaughlin. “Once we fell behind,
the pressure started getting to our
players and our swings were not
as productive. You’ve got to give
Manson tons of credit. They played
solid ball and defeated two teams
(Belmond-Klemme in the second
round) that were a combined 35-5
over the last 40 games.”
The Cougars took a 1-0 lead into
the third inning, where they posted
three more scores. It was still not out
of reach for the Eagles at that point,
but then the team from Manson
would plate five more in the fifth to
really turn up the heat. Meanwhile,
Tori Axtell’s bat produced the only
base hit (a double) the Eagles would
see all night.
Heather Wilson took the loss,
allowing seven earned runs on 12 hits
with four walks.
The team finishes with a 2213 overall record, which is the most
wins in several seasons. Samm
Kruckenberg, Bailey Boyer, Axtell
and Wilson all played their final
game in an Eagle softball uniform.

managed only one hit in the
loss.

among Wright County drivers in
the past week, there were some
good finishes by a few of them. Last
Thursday night at Kossuth County
Speedway, Chad Palmer of Renwick
was fifth in the stock car feature. He
was immediately followed across
the finish line by Craig Berhow of
Belmond in sixth with Heath Tulp of
Belmond 15th.
Last Saturday night at Hamilton
County Speedway in Webster City,
John Campbell motored to fifth
place himself in the stock feature.
Also in that race were Parker Slagle
of Eagle Grove in 11th and Matt Ring
of Dows in 12th. Kyle Schmauss
of Eagle Grove was seventh in the
hobby stock main.

14-4 loss to Norsemen

Last Saturday night at Story
City, the Eagle Grove baseball
team’s season ended in a 14-4 loss
to Roland-Story. Brian Gonzalez
smacked a double for his only hit,
while Jacob Grandgeorge had a
base hit and drove in three runs.
Alex Jensen also had an RBI, with
Devon Omvig, Jensen, Carlos
Lobato and Hector Sosa scoring
the runs. Jensen, Grandgeorge,
Kent Jorgensen, Lobato and Sosa
all drew a walk each.
Mike Dicke started on the
mound and took the loss, giving
up three earned runs on two hits
over 3 1/3 innings. He walked four
and had three K’s. Grandgeorge
came on in relief, allowing four
earned on four hits in 1 2/3. Yackle
finished it, allowing two earned.
Prior to that, the purple and
gold completed their season
schedule with a couple of games.
On July 3 they lost to New Catholic
13-2 in four innings in Mason
City. The Knights jumped on
them hard in their half of the first
by plating seven runs. The Eagles
had single scores in the first and
fifth innings. Gonzalez reached on
a double, with Jensen, Jorgensen,
Yackle and Dicke all swatting
singles. Omvig and Gonzo scored
the runs. Omvig stole a base,
while also showing a good eye
in drawing two walks. Jensen,
Grandgeorge and Jorgenson all
had one free pass to first each.
Yackle pitched three innings,
allowing 10 earned with three
walks and one strikeout. Omvig
finished it, allowing no earned
with two walks and one strikeout.
On July 7, they lost a home
game to Southeast Valley 106. Gonzo was 2 for 4 with a
double, while Sosa also went 2
for 4 and knocked in three runs.
Grandgeorge was 2 for 2 with
an RBI and a run scored. Jensen
stroked a single and scored a
run, while Dicke got an RBI.
Lobato crossed the dish twice,
with Omvig and Dalton Schaffer
getting single runs across.
Jorgensen showed patience at the
plate in drawing two walks, with
Omvig, Grandgeorge and Dicke
getting one free pass to first each.
Dicke pitched 4 2/3 innings,
allowing just one earned on five
hits with four walks and four K’s.
Grandgeorge allowed five earned
with one K in 1 1/3 inning.
The team finishes 6-22
overall, with Sosa, Grandgeorge,
Jorgensen, Dicke, Omvig and
Yackle all playing their final game
in an Eagle baseball uniform.

Eagles give Coach Rholl framed jesery on
senior night
The 2015 senior boys on the Eagle Grove High School baseball team played their last conference
game Tuesday July 7, 2015 on their home field. After the game the seniors took a moment with the
crowd to thank Coach Bruce Rholl (holding framed jersey) for his past years of dedication to the
Eagle Grove baseball team as assistant and head coach. The boys framed a Eagle’s jersey with
Rholls number, 27. Seniors baseball players are (from left to right) Brian Yackle, Mike Dicke, Jacob

Eagle freshmen Baseball finishes 14-4-1
BY LES HOUSER
[email protected]
The Eagle Grove freshmen
baseball team, coached by Dan
O’Hern, recently completed a
very successful season with a 144-1 final record. On July 1, they
traveled to Garner and defeated
the Cardinals in a doubleheader.
They won the first 6-2 behind
the hitting attack of Austin
Hill, Evan Anderson and Nick
Halverson who all had one base
hit each. Colton Poncin took the
win on the hill.
Game two also went to the
purple and gold 11-0. Spencer
Espejo and Chase Blasi swung
the strong bats in this one, each
getting two base hits. Blasi was
the winning pitcher in that game.
On July 3, the Eagles
played league-leading Newman
Catholic and won a big game one
over the Knights 9-8. Halverson,
Braden Lyman and Blasi were
the leaders at the plate, with
Saxon Lyman taking the win on
the pitchers mound. A sweep was
not to be, as the Knights defeated
the Eagles 11-3 in the nightcap.
Poncin and Saxon Lyman led the
team in hitting.

Doug Helgevold was humbled to serve as this year’s Parade

The scam is back
by kim demory
[email protected]
Several months ago, Joe
McKinney, owner of Covenant
Computer Solutions in Eagle Grove,
announced that there was a phone
scam hitting the area. Callers told
you they were from employee of
Windows, Facebook, or Microsoft
Tech Department and that your
computer was having problems and
you needed to have them corrected
now, or major problems would
follow. All they needed to help was
your computer’s password so they
could help you remotely for a small
fee. IT WAS A SCAM. Large
amounts of money were taken from
people’s bank accounts.
While it seemed the scam
tamed for a while, it has once
again fired back up, only this time,
pop up messages alerting your of
alleged problems are appearing on
computers.
“It’s not legitimate,” said
McKinney.
One gentleman who saw “Big
problem. Call this number” pop
up, and when he called the number
on the screen, was charged $500.
“It just seems like the problem
is getting worse,” McKinney
added.
Instead, he suggests that if
anyone calls you talking about
problems with your computer,
hang up, especially if you can’t
understand them. If you see a
pop up, close it. Do not click on
it. Instead, McKinney advises you
talk with someone local (whomever
that might be) who has your best
interest, not your bank account,
at heart. Talk to a professional,
a child, a co-worker, etc., and ask
them to help you. Then you know
it’s someone you can trust.
Simply put, the big computer
companies are too busy to monitor
everyone’s computers and alert
them when there are problems. It
just won’t happen. If you feel like
you are having computer issues,
seek help with someone you know
or trust.
