Ann knows all about balance (how it’s difficult to maintain), and how family and friends are necessary to get through the rough times and celebrate the best—specifically when raising a family, and especially when that family has special needs. “At one point in my life, my husband Brian was running a business, working way more than full-time, and I was working full-time and taking care of three children under the age of five, and pregnant with a fourth. I was overwhelmed. I was mopping the floor at midnight.” Ann said the best thing someone ever asked her was, What would happen if the floor didn’t get cleaned one night? And something clicked. “You have to take care of yourself first.” Prioritize and always place yourself at the top of the list so you can be the strong woman (the true you) that you need to be for family, friends, and employees, and don’t be afraid to reach out for help. This especially rang true for Ann when her youngest child, Katlyn, was born with Down syndrome. “With surgeries and special needs, I came to accept the sentiment that it truly does take a village to raise a kid. We’ve had a great network of people to help us.” Member Spotlight At one point in our conversation, I told Ann that I didn’t think I’d ever truly “grow up.” I confessed with an embarrassed chuckle, that I call my parents for help much too often. Where’s the pilot light on the water heater? How do I choose a new insurance policy? How long do you cook chicken for? She said, “You never stop being a daughter. I call my mom every day.” These days, things are a little less hectic for Aubitz family—three “kids” are now out of the house. “We do a lot of travelling to stay close,” said Ann. “And we try to make stuff fun. We do things like an annual family leaf raking, sweatpants and junkfood-filled Vikings games, camping—that kind of stuff.” And sure, maybe things are a little less hectic, but they sure stay busy. Ann and Katlyn recently published Katlyn Conquers the World, a resource for parents with special needs children. “I never thought she’d be interested in doing something like this, but she loves it! She wants to be famous.” “You get in life what you have the courage to ask for.” Oprah Winfrey [email protected] • 7 You are invited as Simon Says Give celebrates their 4th birthday with the 2nd Annual Fashion Show! Advice and motivation for the female leader! by Dina Simon, CEO of Simon Says Lead One lesson I’ve tried to passed along to others, was one that I had to learn myself, and sometimes the hard way – the 24 Hour Rule. Throughout my leadership journey, I realized I was a bit reactionary. If I was a poker player, people could easily read my cards with just my body language. I had to learn how to not be so reactionary and allow myself time to reflect and then make decisions. That’s why I instituted a “24 Hour Rule.” With this rule, if there is a client or a boss that is upset, I would ask for 24 hours to look objectively at the situation and get back to them with an appropriate answer. The key is to avoid escalating the situation. The “24 Hour Rule” is sort of a “time out” whether in a business setting – or a personal one. This rule has saved me so many times from over-reacting to something that really wasn’t as critical as I might have thought. It has changed me to a more active leader rather than a reactive leader and provided me with the tools to be a calm and collected leader that can solve problems effectively. I have taught this methodology to others, and it often comes back to me in stories of how it helped someone else! So to my younger self, I wish I had this pearl of wisdom at my disposal as I do now. Perhaps I wouldn’t have been so quick to respond to many small situations that seem major at the time. My advice is to find a way to process information and really allow yourself time to make decisions. As someone, like many professionals, who can think quickly on my feet and make good, sound decisions – I sure would have benefited from the ability to sit back and look at things from a bird’s eye view. Perspective is everything. Problems that seem earth shattering from the ground are often minuscule from above. “Other women who are killing it should motivate you, thrill you, challenge you and inspire you.” Taylor Swift [email protected] • 9 The UPS Store Town Centre Shops Print & Business Services ® Take Your Business to the Next Level We specialize in transforming challenges into opportunities One stop shop for all your Business solutions Printing Finishing Services Wide Format Graphic Design Your Vision Owner As the owner/operator of The UPS Store Eagan, I am committed to providing the highest levels of quality and service to our customers. We’ve all been there before—sipping on wine (or is that just me?) and chatting about all the things we want to change in our life. We get overwhelmed and foolishly optimistic, semi-saddened with the realization that our resolutions are far too big and much too many, and we become paralyzed. Carrie wanted to lose weight. She had health problems. All of her immediate family had passed away (many due to health conditions like her own) and she was stressed from work. She needed change, and she was worried that the next year would be no different. This situation would repeat—she’d be sitting unenthused about life, her fingers tightly crossed. “Then my friend referred me to her trainer. I didn’t contact him right away— just walking into a gym was daunting—but once I met Kevin, we clicked. He eventually referred me to a nutritionist, Debbie, and everything started to snowball.” Shedding pounds and gaining confidence, Carrie decided to leave her job and discover her passions. Naturally, she was attracted to the health field. Her mission was to help people who had a longer weight-loss journey in front of them—those who were stuck like she had been. Member Spotlight An interview by Katy Jo Turner “My diabetes is now under control, my blood pressure down. I’ve lost 90 pounds and I’m still going. Health is a journey. It’s not about the numbers reflected on a scale, but how one feels. My biggest tip to you is to figure out why you’re eating. There is always an underlying issue that needs to be addressed when your eating is off. Don’t ignore it.” To read the entire article and more of Carrie’s advice on improving your health, please visit us online at encouragehernetwork.com “I define connection as the energy that exists between people when they feel seen, heard, and valued; when they can give and receive without judgment; and when they derive sustenance and strength from the relationship.” Brené Brown [email protected] • 11 Ask Amber Advice column for the purpose driven entrepreneur! by Amber Annette Combining over 15 years of experience in sales, business development, management, and coaching and training along with experience as a successful entrepreneur, you can expect to receive real, raw, and highly intuitive guidance from this column. What do you want for your business? QD ear Ask Amber- What’s the best way to invest money in business development as a newer entrepreneur in business? AG reat question. With so many options to spend money on; advertising, networking groups, Facebook Ads, etc. it’s no wonder you are feeling a little lost in where to start. First, take a look at your existing client base, or the client base you are trying to establish if you don’t have any clients yet. Where do they shop? Spend their work time or free time? Are there groups you can join that they might be a part of? Depending on your budget, find some events both online and offline that you can spend some time with your ideal clients in. Like the old saying goes, don’t put all of your eggs in one basket, try a few different options and track your results! Q Dear Ask Amber- How do I trust my intuition more? It always seems to back fire when I don’t follow it! A F irst off, don’t be too hard on yourself! It can sometimes be hard to know how to trust our gut instincts and let that lead the way. What I do know, is that letting your intuition guide you will be the way that leads you towards the answer that is for your highest good, even though it isn’t always the answer we want to hear. Meditation can be a great way to connect with our intuition. I like to go into meditation when I am stuck on making a decision, I always awaken with the answer, and feel reassured I am making the right choice. No sex drive? Sound familiar? These symptoms and many others might be sign of hormone imbalance related to pre-menopause or menopause. Every day I talk to women who say… ‘I don’t feel like myself’ or ‘Am I going crazy?’ or ‘I just want to be me again!’ They’re wondering, what is going on with their body and what can they do about it? They’re told, ‘it’s normal’ and ‘just learn to live with it!’ As we age, it’s normal for our hormone levels to decline as we approach menopause. Why do some women breeze through while others are on the verge of collapse? What are hormones anyway? Hormones actually act like a key that fits into a lock. They are natural chemical messengers that are made in the body and travel around in the blood stream so our body knows what to do. Hormones are designed to be in balance and work together like a beautiful symphony in order for us to feel, act, and look our best. Three important reproductive hormones are estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. Start getting answers to these commonly asked questions and more. In fact, a recent survey by PWC found that by the year 2020, millennials will make up 50% of the workforce. Despite earlier reports to the contrary, millennial workers are increasingly recognized as eager, ambitious and genuinely talented — a valuable asset to any workforce. Because their communication styles, expectations and even work habits are different from those of other generations, integrating millennial employees into your company’s culture should be done carefully. Here are nine tips that will help managers communicate successfully with millennials and gain their respect in the process. 1. Keep it brief, but meaningful. Millennials have mastered the art of saying something meaningful in 140 characters or less. The more concise your own message, the more likely they are to relate to or appreciate what you say. 2. At the same time, provide detail. Just because you’re concise doesn’t mean you should skimp on the important information. Most millennials prefer to receive a detailed plan or instruction before jumping into a project. Present everything they need to know to do the job well, but skip flowery prose. 3. Choose the best medium for communication. Face to face meetings and conference calls are not as effective with millennials. Reach the younger generation where they already spend the most time – on their mobile devices. Try an online team portal for collaboration with a mobile app, or get used to Skype. 4. Understand the 24/7 communication cycle. Non-traditional schedules are becoming more common in business, and millennials are prepared to work after they leave the office. Schedule digital communication to keep things moving outside of the 9-5. 5. Communicate the path to career growth. According to a Harris Interactive survey for CareerBuilder, 61% of 25-34 year olds surveyed believe they should be promoted within 2-3 years if they’re doing a good job. Communicate performance assessments frequently and make sure your younger workers understand their own career path within your organization. 6. Don’t condescend or make jokes about age. Millennials want and expect to be taken seriously at work. Respect them, and they’ll respect you. And forget the “This is what I was doing when you were born,” jokes, which are tiresome and annoying for anyone. 7. Demonstrate fairness in the workplace. Millennials support equality of all kinds. As such, leaders and coworkers must behave in a way that can never be perceived as prejudicial or biased toward or against anyone or any group of people. It’s not political correctness as much as it is a genuine concern for equal rights. 8. Commit to a social bottom line. Charitable giving and corporate volunteerism are very important to the millennial generation. Make sure you are communicating your company contribution to the greater good on a regular basis. 9. Most important, nurture their passion. This generation more than any other wants to feel as though their lives and what they do mean something. Use mission-driven terminology to communicate the overall purpose of your company, and their role in achieving those goals. [email protected] • 15 16 • encouragehernetwork.com Guilty! I’m a Name Dropper by Shannon Johnson, Founder & PublisHER of Encourage Her Network What is namedropping? “According to Wikipedia: The practice of casually mentioning the names of important people or institutions within a conversation, story, song, online identity, or other communication. The term often connotes an attempt to impress others; it’s usually regarded negatively and under certain circumstances may constitute a breach of professional ethics. Namedropping can also be used to identify people with a common bond. By indicating the names of people one knows, one makes known his or her social circle providing an opportunity for others with similar connections to relate.” I want to encourage you to change any negative views of namedropping that exist in our world. Namedropping is an ethically OK thing for people to admit that they do. Who doesn’t do it? People don’t really talk about namedropping yet just about everyone has done it. In your next meeting, listen for it. Different people do it for various different reasons. Here’s why I do it when I’m networking: Namedropping has helped me grow my network, and it can help you too. It’s not always all about how much you know. It’s often more about who you know. Tip One: Make sure you really know the person and have an established rapport. Starting a business is hard work. You need to be sharp and hustle to find your first customers. I learned to make it a priority to get to know people that I meet on a personal and professional level. I don’t rush relationships. I take my time building a rapport. After I’ve gotten to know the person, I’m often able to strategically connect that person. Whether it’s to the owner of one of my favorite local restaurants, to my favorite hair stylist, to the sharpest accountant around, or to someone else from my network. I’m seriously a walking rolodex. I appreciate when others refer people to me. Don’t you? Word of mouth referrals are one of my prime sources for generating revenue. It’s a fact that I have generated revenue through word of mouth marketing, or referral marketing. In return for doing what I naturally love to do—help people connect, referral marketing has opened many doors for me to grow my business. Namedropping done for this purpose shouldn’t be viewed negatively at all. Tip Two: Let people talk and be ready to listen. Namedropping can often build credibility for both you and the person that you are mentioning in the conversation when you have a good rapport with each other. It improves relationships! It could really ignite your conversation too, especially if the two people already know each other. After you hear several people name drop the same person, it essentially builds trust because this person is clearly already trusted and respected by her peers. I love to hear when someone drops my name! If the person that you are mentioning doesn’t already know the person you’re in a conversation with, namedropping can also assist in opening the doors for a personal introduction. New connections lead to new opportunities! It’s a great conversation starter. Be careful to keep it positive! Nobody wants to entertain a negative conversation about another person. If the conversation goes that way, change the topic of conversation. Talk about the good connections! They deserve it. Tip Three: Givers gain is the way to grow! Help others and in return, they will help you. Be tactful and have a reason for bringing someone up in conversation. Do not be afraid to namedrop. In networking, you need to be able to relate to others. Often times we can relate to others by the people we are mutually connected to. How has namedropping benefited you? Author. Blogger. What is your value? We live in a society that more often than not predicates success and value based on physical achievement, materialism and societal placement. From childhood on we’re swept away with rules and silent norms about fashion, body image and possessions. We often become so fixated on how to accumulate more “stuff” or pay for the “stuff” we have that we forget about the value we ourselves add to the world. It often takes great catastrophe for someone to shed away enough of the facade to see their true value. Death, life transition, sickness, financial downfalls, these are just a few significant tragedies that have the power to open our eyes and help us understand that we alone are enough. In fact, we alone are not only enough we are brighter, more beautiful and contribute to the world in more meaningful ways once all the noise of made-up societal expectation is silenced. One might say that it’s in our suffering that we’re given an opportunity to come alive and experience real life. Value is measured by how you show yourself to the world. It’s in the kindness you show to another human being who’s making the journey through his or her own suffering. The time you spend with someone who needs your words of wisdom to give them an extra boost in life. The compassion you show in times of adversity, and your ability to forgive someone– including yourself. Personal value is measured through acts of love. It’s in our moments of suffering that we understand the truth of personal value. Because it’s in our moments of suffering that we need someone to show his or her value to us. So today, take time to reflect on the moments of suffering that you’ve been gifted with throughout your life. Have gratitude for those moments of silence. Then ask yourself, “How did the value of someone else help carry you forward? And what is your value to the world?” “One women can make a difference but together we can rock the world.” [email protected] • 19 Q & A With Dina Simon Can you share a little bit about your business? DS: Simon Says Lead, is in business to help leaders grow and be unstoppable in reaching their business goals. It is our why. It is our passion. We provide coaching, consulting, and training in the areas of leadership, business development, and the overall operational health and wellness of a business. Business Spotlight How did you develop into a leader? Can you share a struggle that you’ve overcome? DS: I hope I’m always continuing to develop as a leader! I talk a lot about this in my book, Make Unstoppable Simple. When I think of leadership, I think in terms of a person’s ability to step up and self-lead, especially through hard times. I developed leadership skills back when I was a very young girl—when I was twelve, my mom committed suicide and I had to live life in a very different way. I had amazing family members and teachers who helped me move through such a loss. In my professional career, my understanding of what great leadership can look like came from my relationship with The Ken Blanchard Company. As a certified trainer in many of Ken’s models, I have learned, practiced, and trained others with a deep connection to what servant leadership is all about. Oh, and I really think the best leadership development training I have ever been through is being a MOM! Congrats on your book, Make Unstoppable Simple! Can you share a little bit about your publishing journey? DS: I’ve always loved to write and thought that one day I would write a book—and then one day I was asked to. My publishing journey was like all the journeys of my life... I said YES and then I figured out how to make the magic happen! I assembled an amazing team to help me move mountains and hit crazy deadlines, and we reached all our milestones. What do many of your clients need to work on to improve the health of their business? DS: Most of my clients need to remember to take time to plan! Get away from the day-to-day and do board planning or retreating. I don’t do my own facilitation for planning sessions — I bring someone in to help so I can be a participant and not have to facilitate and have all the answers. Taking time to work ON the business is so important. You have to know where you’ve been and where you’re going, and how to celebrate the small wins along the way! I love conducting “halftime” meetings with my clients. This is a time to check to see what’s working and what isn’t, and how to make changes to accomplish the goals that were set at the beginning of the year. What’s one of the best pieces of advice you’ve been given? DS: Wow, I’ve gotten many sage words of wisdom from great friends and leaders along the way—but I’m not sure I can come up with a phrase or statement! I do have a “best practice” that I think has contributed to my strength as a leader. I am an “Activator” and a “Maximizer” on the Strength Finder profile. I like to run and I like to run fast, so my strength can also be my weakness! I don’t want to plow people over or miss my mark completely, so I’ve had to learn to slow down in order to arrive at my end-point. Know your strengths and your weaknesses. 20 • encouragehernetwork.com Purchase the book! Member FINRA/SIPC. When it comes to investing, there are myths out there, we have all heard them. These myths can often times be very costly for you and can lead you to take too much risk or too little or maybe even avoid investing at all. Below are some common myths about investing and then we give you the truth. The Myth: Investing is basically just gambling. Although there may be similarities between the stock market and casinos, there are drastic differences as well. For instance, the odds. The odds in Vegas are always against you. You may lose money on a specific stock but if you have a diversified portfolio, over time it may help mitigate your losses. In gambling the odds are not in your favor. If you invest in solid companies and invest for the long term that can be to your true financial benefit. The Myth: There are “secrets” to successful investing that most people don’t know. The secret to investing successfully is not secret. Work with someone you trust and diversify your portfolio to reflect your goals and situation as an investor. Invest for the long term. It’s patience. It’s having someone help you and be a partner to make smart decisions. The Myth: The older I get, the less risk I can take. Research has found that instead of getting more conservative as you near retirement, you may want to consider getting more aggressive. This may help reduce the chances of running out of money in retirement. This approach is known as the “rising equity glide path” by researcher Wade Pfau, professor of retirement income at The American College*. It’s not that all of a sudden you retire and want to be completely conservative with your money. You want to have a diversified portfolio and one that works to achieve your goals. The Myth: If there’s a lot of hype about a company, it’s time to buy stock in it. Once you start hearing about a hot company, it may already be too late. Even if you get in on a hot “initial public offering” or IPO, you are not getting in on the ground floor. Before going public, a typical private company has several rounds of financing by individuals or companies. These investors, venture capitalists and private equity firms are the ones who likely get the most value for their investment. The Myth: You need a lot of money to invest. You do not need a large amount of money to start. However, you do need to be able to leave the money alone that you invest. Workplace retirement plans allow you to start investing immediately with as little as 1 percent of your pay. With an IRA, you can start with any amount, however most investments do have a minimum to buy into, typically around $1000. I believe you won’t have a lot of money until you start investing. This is where we can help. Call our office at 763-231-9510 to meet with one of our financial advisors for a free consultation to see if we can help you achieve your goals. *Researcher Wade Pfau and the “rising equity glide path” do not necessarily reflect the views of LPL Financial. Investing involves risk including loss of principal. Diversification does not assure success or protect against loss. All performance referenced is historical and is no guarantee of future results. LONDA LUNDSTROM RAMSEY 24 • encouragehernetwork.com Heart of Leadership by Dr. Denise Trudeau Poskas, MSED, MBA, PhD, Associate Professor & Leadership Specialist at University of Minnesota At the heart of effective leadership is skillful strategic followership. Trying to understand how influences of both the leader and the follower impact leadership effectiveness, leader-member exchange (LMX) theory has focused on the development and effects of this relationship (Graen & Uhl-Bien, 1999). Strategic followership is a philosophy of allowing this relationship to have flexibility in context. By this, it means the leader realizes that the leader/follower relationship is the key to effectiveness. Strategic followership means the leader allows themselves to at times guide the follower while other times, allowing the follower to have more autonomy. Leaders lead better also when they understand active followership. By placing themselves in the role of followers when applicable a leader relinquishes the need to oversee everything and learns the value of empowering others resourcefulness. Whether we lead or follow, we are responsible for our actions and influence” Chaleff. Leaders that embrace strategic followership rely on communication, resourcefulness, encouragement and accountability. They determine to what extent their followers need autonomy. In order to practice strategic followership there are four strategies: 1. Assess what you do well 2. Know your limitations 3. Surround yourself with people who are exceptional at what you are not 4. Choose Boundaries At the heart of leadership is understanding the importance of surrounding yourself with active, empowered followers that can move the mission forward. This requires all to know their resources, develop skills, and work together for effective change. • Family Law • Immigration Law • Estate Planning Aneta Lennartson, Esq. Subscribing to us is a great way to stay connected. It keeps everyone in the loop of what’s happening at Encourage Her Network every month. Subscribers get access to our monthly e newsletter and we also mail them a copy of each new issue of our magazine. I make a habit of collecting business cards when I’m out and about networking and then ask for permission to subscribe my new contacts. You always want to get permission to subscribe others. If I’m exhibiting at an event, I offer a fun promotional drawing to encourage prospects to subscribe to us too. It works! In addition, I love connecting on other social media. Linked In is one of my favorites because it’s specific to business relationships. Twitter and Facebook are pretty popular too. I’m focusing on using these 3 social media platforms for now. I’m gradually learning how to use various social media platforms to increase brand awareness as well as stay connected to my peeps. There are so many awesome social media platforms that are really great for staying connected to people. I recommend allotting a specific amount of time each month for social media, or delegate it and hire out to an expert that knows what they are doing. These platforms change so frequently so it’s always beneficial to know an expert that is in the know of what’s happening and how to utilize each platform. I recommend incorporating social media into your marketing strategy to stay connected to your supporters. At Encourage Her Network, we encourage each other to share resources. How do you stay connected? Join the conversation online at encouragehernetwork.com Always be learning! “Change the world with your SMILE. Don’t let the world change your SMILE.” Shannon Johnson 26 • encouragehernetwork.com Upcoming Signature Networking Events Our events bring working women, small business owners and entrepreneurs together.
