a few side trips, will bring the most smiles for your buck.
You’ll start out by getting acquainted with the excellent
BBQ on The Peaceful Side of the Smokies, where you’ll be
nestled just outside Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
Your family can choose from outdoor adventures by bicycle,
boat or foot, with options for all skill levels. With 900 miles
of trails, clean mountains streams to dip feet or a fishing
line in, and rich cultural heritage commemorated with
historic landmarks, your family will not leave unchanged.
We also encourage a short trip to Lookout Mountain and
Ruby Falls near Chattanooga, where you’ll get panoramic
views of the land and feel the spray of a 145-foot
underground waterfall. No visit to Tennessee is complete
without a trip to Jack Daniel’s distillery in Lynchburg, as
well as our famous capital in Nashville, a.k.a. Music City
U.S.A. Your family’s “Made in Tennessee” adventure will
leave everyone ready to come back again for more.

surrounding mountains welcome you to take in the beauty

After checking in to your accommodations, you’ll no doubt
be in the mood for some great food. We recommend
beginning your Smokies vacation with some mouthwatering, traditional “Made in Tennessee” BBQ. Each of the
local eateries offers a distinctly different dining experience
and flavors that manage to please even the most discerning
BBQ aficionados.
In Townsend, the two hottest BBQ spots are Smokin
Joe’s and Little River BBQ. However, if you don’t mind
a short drive, less than 10 miles away in Maryville, we
also recommend Dead End BBQ, a local award-winning
chain, or Full Service BBQ, which features campy, outdoor
seating near its roadside smoker. If you choose one of the
Maryville locations, we recommend heading to Kupkatie’s
Kupkakes (across from The Market just off the main strip)
for something to satisfy your sweet tooth. Take a few for
the road, too. You will be glad you did!
As the perfect end to your first day, you’ll want to
consider the smell of campfire woodsmoke while
you listen to the gurgles of Townsend’s Little
River. It runs straight through town from its
nearby source in the mountains.

Start the morning with a country breakfast at the Carriage
House to get ready for the day’s adventures. Next, it’s time
to pack a picnic lunch and a blanket, rent a bicycle and head
to Cades Cove in the Great Smoky Mountains National
Park. We recommend bicycling for the most intimate tour
of this serene spot. However, if bicycling doesn’t suit you,
you can also explore by car or a guided tour provided by
The Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center.
After you’ve enjoyed your picnic lunch in the Cove, it’s time
to head back into town for some pampering. Enjoy a predinner wine tasting at Townsend’s own winery, Cades Cove
Cellars, and purchase your favorites to take with you as a
reminder of your Smoky Mountain vacation.
If shopping is up your alley, you will enjoy browsing a few
of the boutiques in downtown Maryville – Roost Home,
Dandy Lions Gift Shop, Boyd Thomas Clothing Store and
Razberries Clothing Boutique are just some of the great
offerings. Make sure to keep an eye out for “Made in
Tennessee” jewelry and trinkets while looking around
these hometown retailers.
As your second day comes to an end, we suggest some fine
dining at Foothills Milling Company. But you’d better be sure
to make a reservation weeks in advance! This small, familyowned restaurant is the go-to spot for a romantic, gourmet,
elegant meal. For more casual dining, try Sullivan’s or Barley’s
Taproom, both located in the heart of downtown Maryville.
After dinner, head to Maryville’s own Bluetick
Brewery for a local craft beer or see what craft
beers happen to be on tap at The Market.

Hiking
Lace up for a beautiful adventure by foot. The Great Smoky Mountains
National Park has miles of trails for any skill level, many leading to
beautiful waterfalls. Some of our favorites are Laurel Falls, Chimney
Tops and Abrams Creek. If you need any gear to make your hike more
comfortable, stop by Simply Love Hiking. They have gear galore, and they
may share some secret trails with you.
Fly Fishing
The national park has more than 2,000 miles of streams within its
boundaries, and it’s the perfect place for spending the day casting a fly
and catching some trout. Fishing is permitted year-round in the park with
either a Tennessee or North Carolina fishing license. (Get your Tennessee

Outfitters has all the fly fishing gear you will need, and its staff will be
able to help any skill level get acquainted.
Tubing and Kayaking
When you want to get wet, Townsend is the place to be for a float in an
inner-tube or a paddle in a kayak down the Little River.
Ziplining and Horseback Riding
Get your spectacular mountain views while flying free above the tree
canopy. Or, if you prefer to be closer to the ground, try an unguided horse
ride along a mountain trail that will give you an intimate experience of
the wilderness and mountain vistas.
Bicycling
If you didn’t bike Cades Cove yesterday, you can try it today. Outside of
the park, there are several other bicycling trails for all levels.
After a full day outdoors, it’s time for a relaxing casual dinner. We
recommend Miss Lily’s Café, followed by a decadent dessert or coffee
around the corner at the Chocolate B’ar for some “Made in Tennessee”
treats (both located in Townsend).
Day 4
Start the day by traveling back in time with a historical tour of
Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center. There, you’ll learn
about the cultural heritage of East Tennessee and the Great
Smoky Mountains through gallery exhibits and educational
programs. Afterward, you can continue your journey through
the past by strolling around the antique stores in the area.
In keeping with the theme of time traveling, take the family
to an authentic drive-in movie for some mid-century family
memories “Made in Tennessee.”

Off for an excursion! Leaving from
Maryville, Tenn., you’ll take a two-hour
ride south to Chattanooga, Tenn., by way
of scenic back roads through the southernmost portion of Tennessee. Take a brief
rest at the visitors’ center in Coker Creek,
Tenn., a town known for its gold long
before the Great California Gold Rush,
and where visitors can still pan for gold.
Next, you’ll travel on through the winding
mountain roads to stop for lunch at the 68

spectacular town of Chattanooga, Tenn.,
where you will check in for an overnight

While in Chattanooga, it’s time to head to one of the best
attractions the South has to offer – Lookout Mountain. There,
you’ll witness the beauty “Made in Tennessee” while touring
Ruby Falls, a 145-foot-high underground waterfall that is
located in the caves of Lookout Mountain. After the tour, you’ll
hop aboard the Incline Railway for a ride to the top of Lookout
Mountain. Once you’ve arrived, you’ll have a breathtaking view
of the valley below. Be sure and have your camera ready for
some fantastic photo opportunities! Next up is the world famous
Rock City, boasting a 100-foot waterfall that cascades down the
mountain. From the spot known as Lover’s Leap, take the unique
opportunity to view seven states at the same time. While there,
enjoy lunch at Café 7. The full service dining terraces at Lover’s
Leap provides the perfect place to take in the seven states view
while feasting on delicious Southern cuisine with a modern twist.
Make sure to stop by the MoonPie General Store to grab one of

Day 7
From Chattanooga, you’ll travel next to the
historic town of Lynchburg, Tenn., home of
the iconic Jack Daniel’s Whiskey distillery,
for an exclusive “Made in Tennessee”
experience. Once in there, you’ll visit the
Jack Daniel’s Visitor Center before a tour
of the world-renown distillery and historic
Lynchburg. For lunch, try the 100-yearold Miss Mary Bobo’s Boarding House
and Restaurant, which boasts some of the
finest down-home cooking the South has
to offer. After a day of touring Lynchburg,
it’s time check into your hotel and get

Your journey continues north to the historic
town of Shelbyville, Tenn. Established in
1810, Shelbyville is best known for its
famous Tennessee Walking Horse industry.
From there, you’ll want to meander on to
the historic town of Murfreesboro, Tenn.
Established in 1811, it is known for its
American Civil War history and the Battle
of the Stones River, the bloodiest battle
of the war. A little known fact is that
Murfreesboro was the state capital of
Tennessee from 1818-1826 until it was
moved to Nashville. After lunch you’ll head
to the state’s capital. Before you check in

Welcome to Nashville! Home to the iconic Grand Ole
Opry and the Country Music Hall of Fame, it’s known
as Country Music, USA. This bustling city and its music
and history create memories that can only be “Made in
Tennessee.” You’ll want to head straight downtown to
Music Row for a taste of the exciting street scene and
fantastic entertainment. Start off with a tour of the historic
Ryman Auditorium, the first home of the Grand Ole Opry.
After lunch, get cozy with country music’s legendary “Man
in Black” at the Johnny Cash Museum. With a full day on
Music Row, it’ll be time to head to the Opry Backstage Grill
for a great evening of fun, music and dinner.
Day 10
It’s not time to leave quite yet! Before heading back to East
Tennessee, take a walk around Centennial Park to gaze at
The Parthenon which stands proudly as the centerpiece
of the city’s premier urban park. A replica of the original
Parthenon in Athens, Nashville’s recreation serves as the city’s
art museum. For the history buff, check out The Hermitage,
the 1,120-acre national historic landmark and home of U.S.
President Andrew Jackson. From there, make your way to
Belle Meade Plantation, once revered as one of the greatest
thoroughbred stud farms in the country. As you travel back east
to end your 10-day adventure, stay in one of the conveniently
located airport hotels next to McGhee Tyson Airport.
