The American
Paint Horse
The American Paint Horse has a history
unlike any other breed in the world. Once
disregarded by some for its bold markings,
that very characteristic makes each Paint
Horse a one-of-a-kind original. Today, the
American Paint Horse breed is one of the
fastest-growing in the world. As you learn
more about Paints, you’ll see that it is
much more than their physical beauty that
has made them one of the world’s favorite
horses.
APHA’s History
The American Paint Horse Association
has come a long way since its formation
in 1962. With only a few hundred horses in the registry by the end of that year,
it has grown to include more than
900,000 Paint Horses today. APHA now
records registrations at the rate of about
40,000 each year.
Founded by horsemen and –women
who loved the ability and speed of the
Western stock-type horse, but who also
appreciated the extra eye-appeal of a colorful coat pattern, APHA’s heart lies in its
members. That is why the association
strives to develop and sponsor programs
that reflect members’ interests and their
love of the American Paint Horse.
The association’s mission remains the
same today as when it was established:
• To collect, record and preserve pedigrees
of American Paint Horses
• Oversee matters related to breeding and
exhibition
• Create and maintain programs that

Now made up of approximately
100,000 members, APHA is a democratic
organization, managed by elected directors
who are supported by a professional staff.
The association is headquartered in Fort
Worth, Texas—an appropriate setting for a
breed so firmly rooted in the American
West. Yet, APHA members hail from every
state in the U.S. and throughout Canada.
The breed is also growing in popularity
internationally, with the number of new
members and clubs steadily increasing
around the globe.
Paint Horse Versus Pinto
Paint Horses come in a multitude of colors and an endless variety of patterns. Their
coat is usually a combination of white with any of the basic colors common to horses: black, bay, brown, chestnut, dun, grullo, sorrel, palomino, gray, cremello, perlino,
buckskin, red dun and roan. Each Paint Horse has its own markings, and no two
horses are exactly alike in coat pattern.
You may have heard the terms “Paint” and “Pinto” used interchangeably to describe
horses with particular spotted coat patterns. This came about because the Spanish
called all spotted horses “caballos Pintos,” which translates into “Paint Horses.” Prior
to the establishment of APHA, a spotted horse could have been called by the English
term “Paint” or by the Spanish term “Pinto.”
Today, because of the existence of both a Paint Horse and a Pinto registry, these
terms can describe two entirely different types of horses. The Pinto Horse Association
(PtHA) registers horses from a broad range of breeds that meet the minimum color
requirements established by that registry. APHA registers only those horses with established parentage from one of the three approved registries—APHA, AQHA and
Jockey Club (Thoroughbred)—and that meet a minimum color requirement.
Some spotted horses can be double-registered with APHA and PtHA if they meet
the breed standards specified by both registries. However, the two registries are not
related. Each operates under the guidance of separate governing bodies and has different rules and registration requirements.

Paint Horse Color Patterns
For registration and breeding purposes,
American Paint Horses are categorized by
their distinctive coat patterns.
The tobiano (pronounced: tow be yah
no) pattern is distinguished by head markings like those of a solid-colored horse;
their heads may be completely solid, or
have a blaze, strip, star or snip. Generally,
all four of the tobiano’s legs are white, at
least below the hocks and knees. Their
spots are often distinctly oval or round,
extending down the neck and chest, giving
the appearance of a shield. Usually, a
tobiano will have the dark color on one or
both flanks—although a tobiano may be
either predominantly dark or white. The
tail is often two colors.
The overo (pronounced: oh vair oh) pattern may also be either predominantly dark
or white. But typically, the white on an
overo will not cross the back of the horse
between its withers and its tail. Generally,
one or all four legs are dark. Also notable is
that overos can have bold white head markings, such as a bald face. Overos generally
have irregular, scattered markings. The
horse’s tail is usually one color.
However, not all coat patterns fit neatly
into the tobiano or overo categories. For
this reason, a number of years ago APHA
expanded its classifications to include
tovero (pronounced: tow vair oh) to
describe horses that have characteristics of
both the tobiano and overo patterns.

Interestingly, the terms “tobiano” and
“overo” have a Spanish heritage, a discernible tie to Cortez and the conquistadors who reintroduced horses to the
North American continent in the 1400s.
It is generally accepted that one or
more dominant genes control the
overo pattern. The fact that the overo
gene is sometimes minimally expressed—
one example is that of a horse whose
only markings are a bald face or high
leg white—explains how an overo can
be registered as a solid.
Because the tobiano gene factor is
dominant, all tobianos have at least one
parent carrying a tobiano gene.
What is fascinating about Paint Horse
breeding is that the genetics of coat color
inheritance are still not readily understood. Not every breeding of two Paint
Horses results in a colored foal. This
makes each painted foal that much more
unique.
Coat Colors
The unique coat colors of the American
Paint Horse make it an eye-catching addition to anyone’s barn.
Each Paint Horse has a unique combination of white and any other color found
in the equine world. Each color falls into
one of two basic coat-color families—red
or black.
The red family consists of chestnut, sorrel, red dun, red roan, palomino and
cremello. The black family consists of
black, brown, bay, bay roan, blue roan,
buckskin, dun, grullo and perlino. The
coat color of gray can fall into either family, as the inheritance of the gray allele is
independent of any other color.
There are several different independent
genetic factors that control a horse’s outward appearance. Some of these control
basic coat color, while others may work
to modify, or in some cases hide, the basic
color.
Each color ranges from light to dark,
including everything in between. Weather,
nutrition, shedding, body condition and
the horse’s general health can affect this
variation in color.

Breeders Trust
Whether you raise Paint
Horses or just like to show or
race them, APHA’s Breeders
Trust is a program for you.
Established in 1994, the
American Paint Horse Association’s Breeders Trust provides
added incentive for Paint Horse
owners to exhibit and race their
horses. The Breeders Trust pays
cash dividends for points earned
by nominated horses at APHAapproved events and races.
Designed to reward everyone
responsible for an outstanding
foal’s success, the Trust profits stallion owners, foal nominators and the horse’s owner.
Here’s how it works:
• Stallions are subscribed annually by November 30.
• Offspring resulting from that stallion’s breedings are then nominated for life with a
one-time enrollment fee. The fee varies depending on the age at which the horse is
enrolled.
• No horse is accepted into the program after its 2-year-old year, or if it has earned
points in APHA competition.
• Trust money is divided and paid annually, beginning when a subscribed stallion’s foals
reach their yearling year. Payouts are based on the total number of point-earning horses enrolled in the program and the number of points earned by those horses during a
given year.
• The stallion subscriber and foal nominator receive 20 percent and 10 percent of the
dividend, respectively, while the foal’s recorded owner receives 70 percent.

Amateur Program
The Amateur Program offers members 19 years of age and older the
opportunity to exhibit an American
Paint Horse in a class of their peers.
Created for non-professionals, Amateur
competition is perfect for riders with
limited experience in competition, or
those who have had show ring experience but who do not wish to jump into
more intense Open competition.
APHA’s Amateur Program is divided into two divisions: Novice
Amateur and Amateur. Created especially for those who have little or no
show ring experience, the Novice
Amateur division is the perfect way to
test the competition waters. Both
Novice Amateurs and Amateurs can
earn show points on their Paint Horse
when they compete at any APHAapproved show. APHA records these
points and presents year-end awards
to competitors for a variety of accomplishments.

APHA-approved Shows
APHA annually approves almost 1,300 shows worldwide. Most
of these events offer classes for everyone from Youth and Amateur
to Open professional trainers. To locate an APHA-approved show

APHA World Championship Paint Horse Show
The World Show is a non-qualifying event open to all APHA
Regular Registry horses. It also offers select Solid Paint-Bred classes.
With more than 180 classes and added-money events, it is the largest
and most prestigious exposition of American Paint Horses in the
world. Nearly 2,000 horses compete annually at the show.
Youth, Amateur and professional horsemen and –women
exhibit their horses during
this Paint Horse extravaganza. Competitors from
across the nation, Canada
and various other countries, demonstrate their
skills in halter, Western,
English, cattle, driving
and speed events. Prizes
include cash, saddles, and
belt buckles—just to
name a few.
Working Ranch Horse Competition
APHA’s Working Ranch Horse Competition is
designed to promote and enhance the pleasure of riding
a versatile Paint Horse. Paint Horses compete in four
classes during Ranch Horse competition:

• Working Stock Horse
• Stock Horse Reining

Gelding Plus
The Gelding Plus program promotes Paint geldings ages 4
years and older by paying out a potential $42,000 at APHAapproved events. With automatic enrollment for every APHA
gelding officially registered as a gelding prior to competition, cash
incentives will be up for grabs at each of 14 approved APHA
shows: 11 zone shows and three international shows. Awarded
to the most outstanding gelding
or geldings, using APHA’s performance show high-point calculation system, this program
provides the owners of these
horses an opportunity to compete for bonus incentives nationwide.

Paint Preferred
The American Paint Horse Association’s Paint Preferred program will offer a
potential $120,000 to Regular Registry and Solid Paint-Bred horses competing
in select National competitions. This currently includes events such as the
National Snaffle Bit Association Futurity Open Western Pleasure and Hunter
Under Saddle classes at the World Championship Show and the National Reining
Horse Association Futurity in the Open division. For more information about the

Racing
Annually, more than 600 starters compete in more than 700 APHArecognized races for purses exceeding $5 million, and newcomers still
have the opportunity to impact the industry and be a part of this sport.
Each year, Paint racing bloodlines improve, purse structures grow, numbers of horses increase and more races are offered.
Stakes races are the bread and butter of Paint racing. Open to Regular
Registry and Solid Paint-Breds, many stakes races have total purses in
excess of $50,000.
Paints are also given the opportunity to compete with horses from the
Appaloosa, Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred breeds. And, APHA recognizes the sport’s best athletes with year-end awards.
The association also supports the Paint racing industry by publishing
the Paint Racing News six times a year. This racing-based magazine delivers the full story on champion Paint racehorses, current racing industry
news, the latest stakes winners and information about leading horses,
trainers, jockeys and breeders.

Paint Alternative Competition Program (PAC)
Through PAC, APHA members can earn APHA
credits on any registered American Paint Horse—
Regular Registry or Solid Paint-Bred—while performing in events outside of APHA-shows. The program
includes categories for almost every event you can
name. For your horse’s placings in any PAC category,
credits will be recorded on its lifetime APHA performance record. And members do not need to own the
Paint Horse they compete
with to participate in the
PAC program.
Along with credits and
recognition certificates,
APHA issues annual PAC
awards based upon the
number of credits earned
by all horses in a particular
category during the year. If your horse is the one earning the most credits in a category during the year, you
will be named PAC Year-End Leader in that activity
and receive a Gist belt buckle, along with other great
awards and recognition in the Paint Horse Journal.
The Paint Alternative Competition program is open
to almost any type of activity, as long as the event is
recognized by APHA and is sponsored by an organization that keeps official records on the performance of all
horses entered.

Official APHA Trail Rides
Recreational riding is a popular pastime
for APHA members. If you’re one of the
many who enjoys strengthening your body
and mind while exploring the great outdoors on the back of your favorite Paint
Horse, you’ll want to learn more about
APHA’s annual Official Trail Rides. From
the rolling plains of Nebraska to the mountains of California, APHA sponsors about
10 rides annually where members can mix,
mingle and mosey down the trail. These
rides range in duration from one day to
one week.

Ride America®
Want to earn rewards for your riding and
driving achievements? APHA recognizes
the time members spend riding or driving
their American Paint Horses through the
Ride America program. Set your own goals
and measure your success. APHA rewards
your achievements for each milestone you
reach.
When you enroll in Ride America, you
receive an official time log and Ride America
patch. Simply record each hour you spend
riding or driving your Regular Registry or
Solid Paint-Bred horse and send your log
book to APHA. As you move up through the
achievement levels—from 100 to 10,000
hours—APHA records your accomplishments and you earn patches, tack, grooming
products and other awards. In addition, each
hour award you and your horse achieve is
permanently recorded on your horse’s
performance record.
All you have to do is enjoy the ride and
record your progress—we’ll reward your
efforts. So get out there and saddle up. It’s

American Paint Horse
Foundation
The American Paint Horse Foundation
(APHF) is the charitable arm of APHA.
The Foundation strives to support youth
scholarships, promote equine research and
preserve the heritage of the American Paint
Horse. Offering scholarships, bronzes, and
trainer services, as well as many other
opportunities, the APHF gives Paint Horse
enthusiasts incredible savings and unique
ways to support educational, historical and
charitable projects.
Annually, the Foundation provides several $1,000 college scholarships to exemplary youth members. The Foundation
promotes the preservation and archival of
historical Paint Horse artifacts through
efforts such as the Legacy of Color bronze
series, which is presented in return for taxdeductible donations from the public. The
bronzes depict the various color patterns
found in the breed with a scene of a galloping stallion pushing his band of two
mares and foal.
To meet its goals through public support,
the Foundation is structured as a tax-exempt
organization according to Internal Revenue
Service requirements. The Foundation was
created January 1, 2006, by a merger of the

Association. APHA encourages all members to join the clubs in their state, region or
country, and to take part in their activities and programs.
