The Hopkins Center for the Arts could not address its mission without the support of the
community, starting with a visionary Hopkins City Council and Mayor. Support from the
people of Hopkins and beyond takes many forms -- individual members and donors,
volunteers, business sponsors and partners, grantors and program patrons. It is only
through such generosity that the Center, open 358 days a year, welcomes over 215,000
visitors each year. In 2014:


Visitors came from 27 states and Canada.
The Center hosted over 2,500 events and
activities – an average of seven per day.

Commitment to Making Arts Accessible


A new Access Plan was drafted and implemented
in 2013, to reduce or eliminate barriers to
participation for people facing physical,
developmental or economic challenges.
In an effort to reduce economic barriers to
attending concerts, in 2013 two more social
service organizations were added to the Center’s
Food for the Soul program whereby unpurchased
concert tickets are distributed to music lovers
through area food banks. 450 tickets were used
by such music lovers in 2014.

became very apparent and the response to the Center’s increased emphasis in this
area has been dramatic:

Contact’s All-Star Award for the impressive “open rate” of our
newsletters; this response rate continued in 2014.
In 2014 Facebook followers increased by 25%
Twitter followers grew by 17% in 2014 and a new record for Center
tweets was set when 1,327 impressions were recorded in one day


As a community gathering place and arts venue, the Hopkins Center for the Arts
impacts the community in economic and public relations terms as well as adding zest
to the local landscape.



Center activities are enriched through
partnerships with local businesses such as:
 Local antique and vintage stores
provided the flair and table décor
for Tea and Treasures, an
accessories boutique and tea first
held at the Center in 2014.
 Pre-concert social hours are
catered free of charge by Big Ten
Restaurant & Bar.
In turn, the Center drives traffic to local
businesses. According to one study, local
art attendees spend an average of $22.87 Artstreet: High and Dry by Kyle Fokken, 2014
beyond the cost of event admissions;
nonlocal attendees spend an average of $38.05.
The Hopkins Center for the Arts and the Friends of Hopkins Center for the Arts are proud to be a
partner in Artstreet, the public art program of the City of Hopkins which organizes an annual
revolving exhibition of artwork on Mainstreet.
The Center reached out to the community through off-site activities, including the Hopkins Arts
Festival in 2013 and Raspberry Jam (one-day music festival) in 2014.

Notes to Financial Statements



* The Friends of the Hopkins Center for the Arts raise money through memberships, sponsorships and
fundraising events.
** $61,000 was transferred from the Economic Development Fund and $86,920 from the cable fund.
2014 year end was negatively impacted by a decrease in grant/contributed support and in concert
ticket sales. A plan is in place to decrease expenses and increase revenue in 2015.
Historically, the Hopkins Center for the Arts has received a subsidy from the Economic
Development Fund. The reason behind this was that the Center has an impact on the
economic health of the City and the downtown area in particular by bringing in over
215,000 visitors each year. However, devoting these funds to the Center meant that
there were fewer resources to devote to other development projects in the City.
According to the City of Hopkins’ adopted Financial Management Plan, this subsidy will
be replaced by supplemental funding through the General Fund in a manner similar to
the Activity Center beginning in 2015.
