Some places guard their secrets. We don’t. Here in
Seaside, we really, really want you to come visit.
So we’ve filled our downtown with great restaurants,
bumper cars, kite shops, and 170 flavors
of saltwater taffy and counting.
We’ve adorned our vast, sandy beach with swing
sets and volleyball nets, and lined it with a
promenade a mile and a half long.
And we’ve built hiking trails that will take you to
epic views of Tillamook Rock Lighthouse, created
biking trails on old logging roads, and have two rivers
running through town you can kayak, canoe or crab.
And we’re eager to tell you exactly how and when and
where to do all the great things Seaside has to offer.
So come one, come all, stay for the weekend
or, better yet, the week. We’ll make sure you
have so much fun you’ll want to visit again
and again and again.

Seaside’s the kind of place where age is just a number.
It doesn’t matter if you’re a wee youngster or if you
never really grew up, you can’t help but feel like a kid
here. And with classic coastal pastimes and whimsical
attractions, the only tricky part is figuring out what
to do first. But that childlike sense of possibility is all
part of the magic.
Every adventure needs a starting point, so head to
Broadway Street, where you’ll discover all sorts of
amusements: vintage games in Funland Arcade,
indoor bumper cars, harbor seals in the Seaside
Aquarium, an old-fashioned carousel and loads more.
Next, ask your pals if they want a treat. They should
all answer with a resounding “Yeah!” Pop in the nearest
candy shop and pick out your favorite flavors of
saltwater taffy. Unwrap. Eat.
Repeat as necessary.
After that, stretch your legs for a bit of
pedal-powered exploring. Hit the streets on a
four-wheeled surrey or opt for a two-wheeled bicycle.
And whether you try fat-tire riding on the beach or hit
mountain trails around the city, you’ll find the wheels
you need at Wheel Fun Rentals or the Prom Bike &
Hobby Shop. Did we mention paddleboat cruising on
the river? That’s a good time, too.
Oh, and don’t forget about the beach. If you’re down
for some high-flying fun, run into a gift shop to grab
a colorful kite of your choosing. The dependable coastal
breeze makes it easy to catch wind and do some aerial
tricks. Or you can spend the afternoon building sandcastles. Just remember: It’s all right if you can’t stop
smiling — that happens to most everybody.

The iconic Turnaround and lamppost-lined pavement,
stretching out along the city’s beachfront, makes the
Promenade a postcard-perfect setting for linking
fingers with loved ones, lounging on the shore with a
good book or watching the fiery colors of the sunset.
But when you stroll, cycle or jog the 1.5-mile path,
you not only witness panoramic views of the Pacific
Ocean, you also glimpse Seaside’s history as a prominent
beach playground.
Built in 1920, the Prom remains the city’s enduring
landmark. It was constructed on land donated by
the city’s former mayor, Alexandre Gilbert, a French
immigrant and real estate developer who led efforts
to rebuild downtown Seaside after a devastating fire
in 1912. His historic beachfront cottage now operates
as the Gilbert Inn, a cozy, couples-only inn perfect for
romantic coastal retreats.
Today Seaside’s downtown bustles year-round with
adventure seekers of all kinds: Families flock to the
Seaside Aquarium, one of the oldest on the West Coast,
to see more than 100 species of marine life. Nearby
kayakers paddle beneath bridges on the Necanicum
River, surfers suit up to catch a wave and hikers trace
trails through temperate rain forests. The Prom lies at
the edge of all this action, but don’t feel like you have
to do everything at once. This is the kind of town that
likes to take things easy.

Two friends and their floppy-eared pooch set out on a
weekend expedition, discovering that it’s easy to Seaside.

It took 18 months for Meriwether Lewis, William Clark and
their dog, Seaman, to reach the rugged and sandy shores
of the Oregon Coast. Having trudged across North America
with the Corps of Discovery, they were long overdue for a
break from the arduous job of exploring continents. And of
all the ways you could complete that 4,000-mile trip, relaxing
in Seaside seems like the most pleasurable.
Since my pal Britany and her mutt, Jackson, have just completed their own cross-country expedition from New York
to Oregon, I figured they, too, needed to dip their paws in
the surf and get a taste of the salty Pacific air. That’s why
we’re cruising west on U.S. Highway 26, inspired by those
explorers from long ago. Sure, we have it a lot easier than
Lewis and Clark did. But with coastal hiking trails, thrilling
waves, charming boutiques and a burgeoning culinary scene,
we have a pretty adventurous weekend in store.

Get Outside
We arrive in Seaside by midmorning and park the
car along Broadway Street, a pedestrian-friendly
thoroughfare that runs through the heart of downtown to the historic automobile Turnaround on the
Prom. Eager to stretch our legs, we head toward the
shore. The ocean’s breaking waves beckon us closer.
Britany chases her energetic pooch out onto the wide,
sandy beach. I kick off my shoes, roll up my jeans
and run after them into the splashing surf.
From this vantage point on the shore, we glimpse
Tillamook Head, a steep, rocky bluff that looms
over the ocean on the south end of
town. More than two centuries ago, the
Lewis and Clark Expedition crossed this
formidable headland and encountered
a beached whale. Near the summit,
Clark marveled at the view of the Pacific
Ocean, later remarking, “I beheld the
grandest and most pleasing prospect
which my eyes ever surveyed.”
Today we’re setting out to hike a
portion of the Oregon Coast Trail in
Ecola State Park that traces Lewis and
Clark’s route to the dramatic, thousandfoot cliff overlooking rocky islands along the craggy
coastline (see page 18 for full details on hiking).
The Tillamook Head trail begins inside the Elmer
Feldenheimer Forest Preserve. We drive over and
park the car at a free lot located at the end of Sunset
Boulevard — just past the Cove, a beach popular
with local surfers (see page 22 for surfing lessons).
As we start the hike, Jackson excitedly runs ahead,
dragging Britany by the leash.
We climb steep switchbacks of the trail, lined
with towering spruce and alder trees, until it levels
out, eventually popping out on the Tillamook Head

viewpoint (about 4 miles into the hike). Here, the
beauty of the Oregon Coast reveals itself. We gaze at
the dramatic vista: the brilliant blue sea stretching out
to the horizon line, the sun hazy with ocean mist. I can
almost hear Clark marveling at the scene before us.
Hit the Beach
The next day: I can hear the ocean lapping against
the shore, the giggles of children playing in the sand
and the hustle of a volleyball match behind me. It’s
warm on the Coast, and I lounge on a fluffy towel
just a few hundred feet from the Turnaround, a
busy stretch of beach perfect for peoplewatching — but I find it’s also a fine
spot for relaxation.
We’ve spent a lazy morning indulging
in Seaside’s simple pleasures: wading
ankle deep into the surf, throwing a
Frisbee around and knocking over
abandoned sandcastles as if we were
giants. Like beachcombers, we’ve even
scanned the shore for sand dollars.
But having worked up quite the
Seaside Aquarium
appetite, Britany and I now saunter
up toward the Prom. We pause for
a moment at the “End of the Trail” monument
depicting Lewis and Clark with their pooch. This
may commemorate the end of their expedition,
but it’s also a perfect starting point to embark on
your own adventures. On the north side of the
Turnaround, harbor seals compete for treats at the
78-year-old Seaside Aquarium (200 N. Prom).
Nearby, the Salt Works, part of Lewis and Clark
National Historical Park, marks where the expedition
made salt to cure meat for their return voyage. You
can even rent bicycles for a leisurely pedal tour
around town (see page 20 for more on cycling).

In the mood for classic Seaside fare, we head toward
Norma’s Seafood & Steak (20 N. Columbia St.), a
lighthouse-shaped, homey restaurant famous for its
wide-ranging menu and fresh seafood (see page 24
for more dining ideas). We each opt for the massive
Lighthouse burger — a 7-ounce patty piled high
with Tillamook cheddar, sliced ham and a fried egg.
We order them to go and stroll east to the Necanicum
River (through Quatat Park) where we watch kayakers
and paddleboaters float under bridges (see page 20 for
watercraft rentals).
We spend the rest of the afternoon playing vintage
games like Fascination at Funland Arcade (201
Broadway St.), the largest arcade on the Oregon
Coast, until the sun droops in the sky. At dusk we
head to the Seashore Inn (60 N. Prom) to purchase
a bonfire kit, which includes s’more ingredients,
roasting sticks and firewood (see page 46 for beach
safety). We warm ourselves by the fire until the
ocean disappears into the thick darkness of night,
rising sparks mingling with stars.
Shop, Sip and Nosh
With the clink of our glasses, we cheer the start
of our final day in Seaside by sipping zesty Bloody
Marys at the Firehouse Grill (841 Broadway St.),
a mom-and-pop hot spot serving home-style breakfast and lunch fare (see page 24 for more on dining).
After a hearty brunch of biscuits and sausage gravy,
I run on ahead to thumb through inky pages at Beach
Books (616 Broadway St.), an independent shop
featuring a carefully curated selection and well-read
staff ready to suggest vacation-worthy page-turners.
Nearby, Britany treats Jackson to the Beach Puppy
Dog Boutique (614 Broadway St.), a specialty pet
store stocking natural, all-meat doggie snacks.
But hankering for some human-friendly sweets, we
head toward Phillips Candies (217 Broadway St.),
a Seaside staple for more than a century, to taste
varieties of house-made saltwater taffy. Just a block
away, we pop in to Sea Star Gelato (8 N. Columbia
St.) for gelato and dairy-free sorbet; we sample the
creamy Hood Strawberry gelato, made with locally
sourced ripe berries.
In the heart of downtown, it’s easy to get lost
browsing the seemingly endless souvenir shops and
eclectic boutiques — all tax free, of course (see page
33 for more on shopping and uniquely Seaside finds).
A can’t-miss destination, the Seaside Carousel
Mall (300 Broadway St.) features a playful collection
of stores surrounding a vintage carousel that’s sure
to thrill kids of all ages.
Before finishing our treasure hunt, we sit ourselves down for a sampler tray at Seaside Brewing
Company (851 Broadway St.), a craft brewery and
taproom located in the restored city jail.
While trading sips and remarking on our favorites,
we find ourselves planning our next Seaside adventure.
Even with all that we’ve packed into one weekend,
we realize that there’s so much to discover here that
one trip can’t do it justice.

HIKE THE TILLAMOOK HEAD TRAIL

One of the Pacific Coast’s iconic
hiking experiences, the Tillamook Head trail meanders along
a pristine tract of coastal Sitka
spruce forest and showcases just
about every breathtaking natural
feature for which the Oregon Coast
is known, from boulder-strewn
beaches to soaring sea cliffs. This
7.5-mile ramble begins on a quiet
bluff at the south end of Seaside,
rises rapidly into the fern-shrouded
woodlands of Ecola State Park,
hugs the sheer-walled Tillamook
Headlands, then descends to a
spectacular stretch of sand at the
north end of Cannon Beach.
You can hike this trail as a challenging 15-mile there-and-back
sojourn, but keep in mind that some
of the most alluring scenery —
Indian Beach and the Ecola State
Park picnic area — lies south of
the headland at the Cannon Beach

end of the trail. By the time you
get this far, you may not have the
time or energy for the return hike.
An alternative is leaving a car in
a parking lot ($5 day-use fee) at
Ecola State Park in Cannon Beach
before you set out from Seaside, or
for $25 you can arrange for Arrow
Taxi in Seaside to pick you up at
the park’s picnic area.
To begin, drive to the free
parking lot at the end of Sunset
Boulevard (which becomes Ocean
Vista Drive), where you’ll find the
trailhead. The hike begins within
the Elmer Feldenheimer Forest
Preserve. You’ll encounter the
steepest climb, including a heavily
wooded series of narrow switchbacks that rise about 900 feet,
during the hike’s first couple of
miles. Take your time and breathe
in the forest’s aromatic understory,
which typically remains cool and
damp even on warm summer days,
thanks to the coastal fog that sometimes encases the trail in a milky,
translucent mist.
At the top of the switchbacks, the
trail somewhat levels out for the
next couple of miles, wending atop
the 1,130-foot-tall headland. You’ll
pass beneath quite a few massive
old-growth Sitka spruce that were
spared during early logging efforts,
some dating back more than two
centuries and soaring to well over
100 feet tall. Smaller conifers,
including western hemlock and
western red cedar, also proliferate
throughout this emerald forest
carpeted with wood sorrel, gooseneck moss, skunk cabbage and
huge deer ferns.
A little beyond the 4-mile point,
you’ll come to a small cluster of
log camping shelters, as well as
an abandoned concrete bunker

from World War II. A short spur
trail leads west to a lofty cliffside
viewpoint overlooking forlorn (and
no longer operating) Tillamook
Rock Lighthouse, about a mile
offshore. From here, the main trail
hugs the south side of the steep
headland, in places offering magnificent panoramas south down the
Coast. In spring and fall, you may
even see gray whales journeying
up or down the Coast.
At smooth-as-glass Indian
Beach, one of the Coast’s most
popular surfing venues, scamper
down to the beachfront, an ideal
spot to dip your tired toes into
the ocean, or simply laze on the
sand for a while. For a memorable
finale, continue another 1.5 miles
along the forested, hilly trail behind
Indian Beach to Ecola Point
picnic area. If at all possible, time
your arrival with the setting sun.
Here you can see the town of
Cannon Beach, iconic Haystack
Rock and, in the distance, the
1,680-foot crown of Neahkahnie
Mountain.
Upon completing this rewarding
journey, pat yourself on the back
and head out for a relaxing dinner.

great après-hiking choice —
it’s a short drive from the trailhead in Seaside, just a few blocks
from the ocean. This friendly
neighborhood tavern — with a
cozy outdoor seating area and
a well-curated selection of craft
brews on tap — serves steamed
mussels in a spicy chipotle broth,

several outstanding trails, some of them
easy, others geared toward experienced hikers seeking a vertical
challenge. What they share,
however, are magnificent vistas,
from endless beaches to craggy
mountaintops.
Right in the heart of downtown,
Seaside Promenade stretches for
1.5 miles along the oceanfront, offering an
easy, picturesque trek to bikers, joggers,
walkers and wheelchair users.
A favorite ramble among history
buffs, the 6.5-mile Fort to Sea Trail
connects windswept Sunset Beach State
Recreation Site, a 15-minute drive north
of Seaside, with Fort Clatsop, the replica
of Lewis and Clark’s log garrison that
now anchors the national park bearing
their names.
One of the area’s most popular treks,
the summit hike at Saddle Mountain
State Natural Area, leads to a lofty
3,290-foot peak that, on clear days, reveals
views of Mt. Hood in one direction and
the Pacific Ocean in the other. Approximately 35 minutes’ drive east of Seaside
via U.S. 26, the Saddle Mountain Trail is
just 2.5 miles each way, but the steep
1,603-foot elevation gain provides those
who climb it a vigorous cardio workout.

Popular since the 1920s both with casual duffers and experienced low handicappers,
the short but exacting nine-hole course at Seaside Golf Club offers reasonable
greens fees and a picturesque layout along the Necanicum River.You’ll find a pair of
enticing gems just north of Seaside, the nine-hole Highlands Golf Club and the
18-hole Gearhart Golf Links, which was established in 1892 — arguably making
it the oldest course west of the Mississippi River. Inspired by the venerable links-style
dunes tracks of Scotland, Gearhart is famous for its tight, lightning-fast greens and
undulating fairways.

Even on bustling summer days, you can enjoy
a peaceful outing in the heart of downtown
Seaside. Just lower yourself into a kayak and
paddle gently along the Necanicum River,
which flows beneath multiple bridges from
the boat launch at Quatat Park, by the Seaside
Convention Center, south to the Avenue U
Bridge and the Necanicum Estuary. Adjacent
to Quatat Park, Wheel Fun Rentals can
set you up with single- and double-kayak
rentals as well as stand-up paddleboards,
paddleboats and pedal boats. Have your own
watercraft, or already rented one from a
nearby shop? Try launching from Seaside’s
newest wonder: the ADA-accessible
kayak launch along the Neawanna River

Whether you fill your days with outdoor adventures, shopping excursions or long hours on the beach, you’ll want to carve out time to indulge in Seaside’s mouthwatering culinary scene. Offering everything
from steaming bowls of chowder to family-style Italian fare, restaurants
here are defined by a traditional approach to cuisine and a refreshing
lack of pretension, making it really hard to pick favorites.
That’s why we quizzed locals on where to find the tastiest dishes, and
as you might imagine, they suggested an overwhelming number of can’tmiss dining hot spots. Clearly, you could spend days eating your way
through this town. But to help you get your bearings, we highlight a few
suggested eateries where you can recharge for your next escapade.
Hearty Brunch Feast
Whether you wake up early to dip
your toes in the surf or sleep in

Can’t-Miss Clam Chowder

at Maggie’s on the Prom (581
S. Promenade) is a classic Oregon
Coast dining experience — both
for the ocean views and the equally
impressive menu of new American
fare. Named for the cat that once
roamed the restaurant and rested
in the laps of guests, Maggie’s
takes a relaxed approach to fine
dining, serving breakfast, lunch
and dinner. The chef sources many
local ingredients for seasonally
inspired dishes, including a selection of ocean-fresh seafood and a
variety of gluten-free options. But
a year-round favorite is the
thick and creamy clam chowder,

You may know Seaside for its expansive beach and coastal charm. But
unsuspecting visitors will be delighted to discover a bustling shopping
scene that has, in recent years, seen a number of local and independent
boutiques crop up.
This is especially true in Seaside’s historic Gilbert District, centered
on Broadway Street just east of the Necanicum River, which divides the
town’s core into two distinct scenes. East of the river, upscale boutiques
and galleries featuring local artists, designer labels and eco-friendly
practices are now a mainstay. West of the river, in the heart of downtown, you’ll find arcades, candy stores and T-shirt shops mingling with
a handful of original outposts that bring local products, art and sophisticated souvenirs to the mix.
On both sides of the river and in shops off the beaten path, there is
growing interest in promoting area artisans and sending shoppers home
with distinctly Seaside memories — all tax free, of course. Most of the
shops are pet friendly, and the business owners sit behind the counters
ready to chat up the locals and direct visitors to the best finds in town.
Denise Fairweather, an interior designer who owns the gorgeous
Fairweather House & Gallery, has lived in Seaside for 10 years and
has watched the town evolve. “Each Seaside shop is unique,” she says.
“There are 27 businesses in two city blocks and only two landlords, so
each boutique has to do its own thing. You won’t find a cookie-cutter
store in the shopping district. Most often the owner is in the shop. We
shop local and hire local.”
To shop the best of Seaside, begin at the east end of Broadway Street
and stroll west, about a 20-minute walk toward the ocean. Later, hop on
a bike or take your car to visit several noteworthy destinations off the
main strip.

Use these tide tables only as a general
guide to help plan a safe trip to the beach.
Note that tides can often vary by an hour
or more from these predictions, often due
to a variety of climatic conditions.
Tsunami Preparation
Seaside is gaining notoriety as one of the
most well-prepared beach communities on
the West Coast for tsunamis. For several
years, the city has been working to promote
safety and help residents and visitors be
prepared in the event of a tsunami. Although
rare, earthquakes followed by tsunamis have
been known to strike the Oregon Coast. If
you hear the Seaside Community Warning
System or feel an earthquake, move inland to
higher ground as quickly as possible, preferably on foot. Emergency instructions and an
official “all clear” will be broadcast over the
public Emergency Alert System.

In the event that normal communications
are disrupted, Clatsop County Ham Radio
operators are on duty on these local ham
radio frequencies:

■ Please remove your trash from the beach.
Note: Many shops, including the Visitors
Center, provide complimentary bags to
assist with trash removal.
■ Overnight camping on the beach is
prohibited.
■ Dogs are welcome to run without a
leash on city beaches, but they must be
supervised at all times and must be within
immediate voice control. Leash law on city
streets is enforced.
■ Oregon Fireworks Law applies to all of
Seaside including the beach. Illegal fireworks will be confiscated, and violators
are subject to arrest and fines.
■ Surfboards may only be launched at the
Cove. No rigid watercraft may be launched
from the beach within the city limits.Wind
sails are not allowed on the beach.
■ Glass containers are never allowed on the
beach, and alcoholic beverages exceeding
14 percent alcohol are also prohibited.
During spring break, consumption of all
alcoholic beverages on the beach is not
allowed. Drinking alcoholic beverages on
the Prom is prohibited.

allowed on the Prom. No skateboards,
motorcycles, motorized vehicles or
surreys, please.
■ If you see an injured animal, do not
approach it. Call the Seaside Police
(at 503.738.6311), who will notify
proper agencies.
■ The Prom and ramp just south of the Turn-
Beware of rip currents, sneaker waves and
incoming tides; don’t climb on drift logs,
especially on wet sand; be careful on cliffs
and rocks, they can be slippery; and understand tsunamis. Seaside is prepared with
modern warning systems in place to alert
people in case of a distant or local event.
If you feel a strong earthquake or hear
sirens, proceed inland on foot, and
follow posted evacuation routes to
higher ground east of town.
