Newsletter June 2012
Etna Elementary School Where we Think, Learn, Achieve, & Care http://etna.lcsd2.org June 2012 ierantoni’s Place On the last day of school, your child will bring home his/her personal belongings from school as well as information about activities and events for the summer. We will show students their report cards on that last day, then collect them and send them home by mail the following week. This mailing will also include classroom placements and a supply list. You should receive this information sometime during the next two weeks in June. Again, report cards will not come home on the last day of school, they will be mailed the following week. Please notify the office if your mailing address has changed. For those students and families who will not be here next year, it has been a pleasure to get to know you and be a part of your educational experience. For those students returning next year, look forward to new faces in new places and another great year at Etna Elementary. This is the last newsletter for the 2011-2012 School Year. It has been a great year. Thank you for your support and trust in working with your children. Together, we continue to make Etna Elementary a place where we Think, Learn, Achieve, & Care. Etna students will be participating in our Swim-N-Read program this summer. We have two sessions at the Jackson Recreation Center on Mondays-Thursdays from 12:10-12:55. The first session will be June 18-28 and the second will be July 9-19. Note: The dates of Session 2 have changed since the May newsletter to avoid the holiday week of July 4th. Our final, third session will run for two weeks at Star Valley Ranch Cedar Creek Pool, August 6-9 and 13-16. We plan to offer a winter session again if that works better for you. We want all of our students to have the opportunity to learn to swim! We had a great After-School year! Thanks to all who participated as teachers and students! We would especially like to give a huge THANK YOU to the visiting experts who came out of their way to Etna Elementary to assist in Etna Enrichment Express: Todd Fletcher, Douglas Bradstreet, Brenda Ashworth, Shar Perry, Korry Wheeler, Maggie Pallan, and Katie Roberts. We plan to offer more fascinating classes again next year. We would love to find those areas that most interest and intrigue your student. Let us know if you have any ideas or suggestions. See you in the fall! School Psychologist’s Corner Escaping the Summer Slide Chances are fairly good that your child has been looking forward to summer since early January with visions of sleeping in, running through sprinklers, and sitting on the couch eating Cool Ranch Doritos at 10 a.m. Allowing your children to relax and “live it up” during the summer is a well-deserved reward for their hard work during the school year. Unfortunately, many students experience learning losses when they don’t engage in educational activities during the summer break. Numerous studies on knowledge retention have shown that students typically score lower on standardized tests at the end of summer vacation than they do on the same tests at the beginning of summer. The old adage, “If you don’t use it, you lose it” couldn’t be more fitting. Here a few tips to escape the summer slide by incorporating these components into your student’s open schedule: • • • • • • • Establish a schedule of Learning Time when your child can use the internet to practice math skills on fun web-based programs IXL.com KhanAcademy.com Encourage your child to read daily, preferably for 30-60 minutes Ask your teacher for worksheets/assignments that can be used during the summer Consider enrolling your student in summer school (two 2-week sessions available at 4 hours per day) Create fun projects that will allow your child to learn new skills If you have any questions or would like to offer suggestions, please contact Brandon Henscheid at (307) 885-2472 or via email at [email protected]. We sent Flat Stanley to a person we know or are related to. Here are some places Flat Stanley went: Phoenix, Arizona; Denver, Colorado; Washington; Las Vegas; and many other places. Each time he went somewhere he came back with postcards or pictures. One of our classmates even went to where he sent it and had a picture taken of him. That’s what we have been doing for Flat Stanley in the 4th grade. Elvis was “in the building”! Samuel Jenkins won an iPod Touch when his name was drawn from this session’s bus riders. School Bus Riders of the Month Back (l-r): Taylor Corbin, Remington Roberts, Noah Hutchinson, Matthew Hunting, Dauson Jorgensen Middle: Gabriel Ray, Katherine Lechner, Gypsy Montiel, Jesus Montiel, Danielle Fjeldsted, Hailey Hincks, Davin Sorensen Front: Hailey Astle, Johannah Christie, Robert Choma 5th Grade Class Arranges the Cafeteria by Olivia Rainey Mrs. Moore’s class decided to volunteer to rearrange the cafeteria, so the lunch line will flow better. They made everything askew and changed the location of the silverware and tray holder. In addition, they moved the milk cartons to make room for the new salad bar . They put it at an angle also, so the students would be able to get back in abc order for Mrs. Hartley’s lunch count. This method has proved to be beneficial for Etna Elementary School. The Perfect Square Project By Bridger Roberson, Gracie Erickson and JoHannah Christie Mr. Jaques’s perfect (almost perfect!) class read a book called The Perfect Square by Michael Hall. Then we had a project about it. The perfect square was cut into many shapes, and then we made “perfect” creations. There was a Monster With Giant Feet by Makaylyn Pierce, A Monster (with no giant feet, but pointy teeth) by Braydon Lowder, A Delicious Apple Tree came along by Dakodah Jorgenson, “beep-boop-beep-boop” PacMan said by Andrew Breidenstein. Even one of our teachers (Mrs. Jenkins) did a wonderful hummingbird. There were other creations as well. But we need to start from the beginning. . . . We each started with a blank piece of paper (square, of course). We colored the paper any way we wanted with our coloring sticks (AKA colored pencils, crayons, or markers) The next day, we planned our picture and then started cutting. When we finished cutting our paper, we picked out a piece of colorful construction paper. Next, we glued our picture onto it – we had to use every single piece – from germ sized to blue whale size. Finally we wrote down our script. We sat in the hall with Mr. Jaques’s computer and headphones. We then spoke in the mic and recorded our voices at a website called mp3.org. Once we got a recording that we liked, we copied the website code onto a different website – qrcode.kaywa.com and got a picture of a box with dots all over. Then we took a screenshot (shift-command 4) and the computer went “ka-ching” and copied it onto the computer desktop. Mr. Jaques printed it, and we taped it to our perfect creation. When everyone was done, we posted our creations in the hallway outside the library for people to see AND hear! Now you, who is reading this, take your iPad, iPod, iPhone, or anything that starts with iP . . . and download a QR reader app. Then click on the code by the picture and hear the artist’s voice. If you want to see and hear other creations, come to Etna Elementary. We hope you like them.
