President’s Message
THANK
Dear friends:
Summer is here now, and it means the busiest time for us. The kittens born to
stray cats are now seen everywhere. Everyday we receive calls reporting on
kittens hanging round in the city. With very limited sources, both in funds and
manpower, the number we can help is just the tip of the iceberg. Still, we try
our best to take in as many as possible, finding homes for the kittens and
neutering/spaying the adults to prevent the over population of stray cats.

From January to June this year, we’ve been able to rescue close to 230
homeless pets. Please see details of statistics below.
As always, we are in need of foster homes for both dogs and cats to help us
place the animals we rescue. Foster homes to socialize young stray cats and
kittens are especially needed at this time.
Our annual Walkathon will take place on Sept 15, 2012 at the Erindale Park. This
year, we are expanding the event and it will be renamed PET-FEST &
WALKATHON. We will include more new activities like a Kitten/Cat Adopt-athon, Best Dressed Doggie Contest, Kids Corner, Ask the Dog Trainer, Vendors
Booth etc. It is our goal to attract a wider range of people rather than just dog
owners. The more people and pets, the merrier!
It is the goal of the Mississauga Humane Society to rescue as many animals as
we can. With all the dedicated volunteers and the generous donors we are able
to continue rescuing as many companion animals as possible.

Heidi & her newborns
I was at work one afternoon when I got the email –
urgent appeal – foster home needed for a pregnant
cat. Wow – this was the chance I had waited for all
my life – I absolutely adore kittens. It only took me a
few seconds to decide I was up to the task. Later
that evening, I brought home a pregnant cat. Even
the vet did not know how far along she was. Heidi
was very friendly so she was saved but that meant
there were many others who were not so lucky. She
was taken to the vet for spaying but it was discovered
that she was pregnant and too far along to terminate
the pregnancy.
This friendly cat obviously had been a
real beauty but right now she was a
scrawny cat with an upper
respiratory and a bad eye
infection. She had been on the
streets for a while and was
suffering
the
consequences.
Twice a day, I administered her
antibiotics, put drops in her eyes,
mixed a special supplement into her
wet food, fed her dry food, fresh water,
washed her bowls and cleaned the kitty
litter. In the beginning, the poor cat couldn’t stop
sneezing but slowly she got better and started to
regain her strength. She was very grateful to me and
every evening as I sat in her room, she jumped onto
my lap to be petted and loved. As her tummy grew
bigger, she allowed me the privilege of feeling her
little kittens moving around in her belly. The weeks
slowly went by and I was becoming impatient for her
babies to be born. I knew a cat’s pregnancy was
about 65 days long but it seemed like I’d been waiting
forever.
After one month,
one night when I came
ome,
Home Heidi didn’t come to the door to greet me.
Instead, she was peeking out of the cardboard box I
had made as a nesting place for her. Inside were 4
kittens. I was surprised at how large they were as I
had been expecting something about half the size.
Heidi was nursing three of her babies. One kitten
had been pushed off to the side and I realized it had
died. I took the dead kitten away, wrapped it up, said
a little prayer and buried it in my front garden. This is
the everyday dance of life and death in Mother
Nature….only the strong will survive.
Every day, I could not wait
to
get
home to see how my little babies were doing. It was
incredible just watching the gradual changes. There
was something new each time and it would never
cease to amaze me….their eyes opening, their ears
lifting, standing up, their wobbly first steps. It was
so thrilling to watch all of it. But the most
amazing part of all was when they started
to respond to my touch. They stretched
their little bodies out so I could rub
their bellies and even though they
were so tiny, it was obvious that they
were enjoying it.
By four weeks, they were starting to
walk around with stronger little legs
and play with each other. By six weeks,
they started to climb over the baby gate in
the spare bedroom. Then mommy cat went
into heat again. I couldn’t believe that could happen
so soon after she had her kittens, but it did. Well let’s
see….she’d been pregnant for 2 months and now the
kittens were almost 2 months old. According to my
calculations, that means she could have kittens every
4 months or 3 litters per year. If she had 5 kittens per
litter, that would be 15 kittens in one year. If those 15
kittens had 3 litters of 5 each, that’s 225 kittens in two
years. If those 225 kittens had 3 litters, that’s 3,375
kittens in three years!!. That is why it is so important
to spay your cat.
All three of the little kittens found wonderful homes.
They were all friendly, happy and well-adjusted.
Heidi had no problem letting them go and did not cry
for them once they left. She knew she had done a
good job and now it was her turn to rest. Heidi has
now been spayed and is waiting patiently for
someone to adopt her. She will make an incredible
pet for someone. And to think that she sat on death
row is absolutely heart-breaking. Thank you, MHS,
for saving her and her kitties!
Update: Two days before the release of PET CHAT Heidi was adopted. She now has a forever home like her kitties!

FOREVER
SHEENIE
In the spring of 2002 adorable Sheenie entered our lives as a foster through the MHS. My daughter and I wanted to share our love for
animals by fostering, and Lily told us about Sheenie, who was a very smart girl and well-trained, and could shake a paw and roll over.
Sheenie was about 7 years old when we got her. She was a 55 lb Black Lab and Beagle mix, and was black with white markings and
resembled a chubby Black Lab puppy. She was probably named after her shiny coat. The first night, Sheenie jumped up on my bed
with me, so desperate for love and human companionship. At the time we had also fostered Panthea, who gave birth to her kittens in
our home and all were adopted out to wonderful families. The kittens would eat with Sheenie from her bowl, and Sheenie loved them.
About a month after we got Sheenie, she seemed restless one evening and in the morning her back legs just gave out under her. I carried
her to the vet, who x-rayed and advised me that Sheenie had suffered a ruptured disk and was paralyzed and required immediate
emergency care. (We thought perhaps she had chased Panthea down the stairs and twisted her leg.) We drove Sheenie to the
University of Guelph OVC small animal clinic. It was a Saturday afternoon and the care she got was incredible. She was examined by
specialists, had a myelogram, and we were told she would need spinal surgery and she had a 50/50 chance of walking again. We saw
Sheenie’s brave sweet face and together with MHS, proceeded with the surgery. Sheenie was at the OVC clinic for about 2 weeks
when she had the required leg reflex and was released.
My daughter Julia and I nursed Sheenie at home, using a sling to take her outside, and I would carry her at the cottage to the boat,
which she loved. About a month later, she was on a beach and was so determined to walk that she very shakily got up on her legs. That
was a miracle. She recovered quickly and was able to run and jump again. We knew then we had to keep Sheenie as part of the family!
Sheenie’s personality was fantastic, 100% goodness, so calm and gentle and such a good sport. She would kayak with me around our
cottage island and even go tubing with me behind the boat. She loved to go fishing and at the age of 12 would run up and down the
boat chasing the lure and howling with excitement. You still could not call her a senior. This was after she had a splenectomy to
remove a tumour, which she survived with flying colours, living happily for another 7 years and enjoying attention and her daily walks.
When we moved to King City in 2009, Sheenie was 14 and though she had slowed down, she still enjoyed walking about the large
property and barking at cyclists or people walking by. Her vision was always good, though she lost most of her hearing shortly after,
but Sheenie was happy and healthy and loved to eat. She enjoyed a driving trip with us to visit family in New Brunswick when she was
16 and stayed in beautiful places where they accepted dogs. I wouldn’t travel without her; she was such a huge part of my life/family.
Sheenie was diagnosed with a liver tumour in March 2011. Her vet advised that at her age she would not survive invasive treatment,
and said she was not in pain and to enjoy my time with her as long as she was eating and was comfortable. She did get weaker in late
fall of 2011, and in January 2012 appeared to have suffered a small stroke. Again she miraculously recovered but needed nursing care
from me. I had her regularly examined by her vet as her comfort was of course most important. My chiropractor was also kind enough
to visit weekly to massage and treat Sheenie. Though it was trying, this time spent caring for my very special companion in every way
possible was the most fulfilling time of my life. Sheenie deserved it so much, having loved us for so long. Though it was expected, it
was devastating to me when she passed away at home on March 16, 2012 at almost 17 years of age, after peacefully falling into a coma.
I miss her terribly when I look and she is not there. Sheenie was privately cremated and her cremains are with me in her special urn. She
is resting with me, as are the precious memories of our life together, and many of her photos adorn our home. I have a silver heart
necklace with her cute photo laser engraved on it that holds a lock of her fur, and my angel Sheenie is with me everywhere.
I am blessed with the values she taught me: love, patience, devotion, compassion and gratefulness for what each day holds. Each
and every one of our pets is a miracle, and they give us the elusive gift of gratefulness for the moment and appreciation of every single
life. I have thanked Lily for bringing this very loving and wonderful girl into my life. She very kindly said that Sheenie was one of
the luckiest dogs on earth, and that is comforting to me at this sad time. She certainly was to me the most beautiful.

PET VALU - PAWZ EVENT
In the month of April 2012 two PET VALU stores
where we have a KITTEN CORNER
6055 Credit view Rd
866 Glen Erin Rd
hosted a PAWZ EVENT to benefit MHS. A total of
$2,700 was raised. Thanks very much PET VALU!

in
the
Customer
Appreciation event at both stores on the weekend
of April 14 & 15, 2012 with some of our dogs and
cats for adoption. A couple of kittens were adopted!
Thanks to Kathy Whitley, Jane Hollingsworth, Sue
Gaskell, Kisa Noble & Lily Chan who volunteered
on that weekend.
The KIDS from MEADOWVALE VILLAGE are kind and
hardworking when it comes to animals! In April 2012
they did a food drive for the homeless animals and
donated to our Society. They had the idea from a local
real estate agent who was doing her annual Easter food
drive for humans! The kids did not know what to expect
so they were truly delighted with the generosity of the
community. A wagon was actually needed to carry all of
the donated items!
THANKS VERY MUCH MEADOWVALE KIDS and also to
Tracey MacLean who helped organised this food drive.
JACOX HARLEY-DAVIDSON Demo Day
On April 21, 2012 JACOX HARLEY-DAVIDSON, Argentia Rd,
Mississauga had a DEMO DAY for free test rides on 2012 HarleyDavidson motorcycles. They kindly took this opportunity to
raise funds for our Society. There were a BBQ, door prizes, bake
sale and 50/50 and $420 was raised. Thanks very much

JACK ASTOR Bar Competition
On Wednesday, June 6, 2012 Jack Astor Restaurant at Square I hosted a BAR
COMPETITION. Tickets and raffles were sold with the proceeds going to our Society. We
are pleased to report that $1000 was raised!

Starlight Soiree, our first fund raising Gala evening, was held on April 5, 2012 at the Old Barber House
Restaurant in Streetsville. We were blown away by the response and tickets were oversold. There were
11 tables and 120 people attended. It was a great evening and everyone enjoyed it to the full.
“Congratulations for the over-the-top evening!! We had a wonderful time with all the supporters for MHS. The venue
was high class! The food was great, the video was very professionally set up, the stories for each pet was perfect (not
too sucky, but just enough to pull at heartstrings'). People had nothing but good comments about the evening!”
“The evening was first class. It was an extremely well run event and has taken MHS to a whole new level of fund
raising… I have to say this was the best fund raising event by far I have seen in all my years. The video of MHS
rescues hit home to the audience and summed up what MHS message is. I don’t think there was a dry eye in the
house …”
Besides the delicious food and drinks, there was a Silent Auction with great prizes, raffles, and a magician
going around each table to perform tricks to entertain the guests. The audience was touched by the
rescue work of MHS when a video of their rescued animals was shown. The night was highlighted by a
presentation of MHS WALL of FAME certificates to recognize several dedicated and long-term foster
parents for their contribution. It was just a wonderful evening with lots of laughter and tears.
We would like to give a BIG VOTE of THANKS to KYLIE VIRTUE & KELLIE SHERIDAN who organised the
event. The professionalism they displayed in planning the Gala impressed everyone. A total of $8,550 was
raised and we would also like to thank all of the sponsors, donors and volunteers for the event.
This will be an annual event and the date has been set on March 23, v2013. Please diares this spcial day!

WEST HOLLYWOOD – The Humane Capital
of the US, The first FUR-FREE CITY in the NATION
An ordinance to ban the sale of fur in West Hollywood was passed
on September 20, 2011, the City Council. The implementation
date of the Fur Free Ban is September 21, 2013; on this date
West Hollywood retailers can no longer sell apparel that is made
from the skin or pelt of animals with hair, wool or fur.
In 1989, West Hollywood was declared a “cruelty free zone for
animals” when bans on cosmetic testing and steel leg-hold traps
were put in place, after WeHo City Council passed Resolution
558. It was the first city in the U.S. to ban declawing of cats and
is also one of the guardian cities where pets are referred to as
animal companions, not pets. In 2010, the city banned the sale of
dogs and cats in pet stores.

POTATO FRITTERS World
Potato fritters are very delicious and
make a tasty snack that even kids will love,!
Serving Size: 10+
Ingredients: 3 cups plain flour






3 large potatoes, grated
1 medium onion, finely chopped
1 can corn, drained
salt and pepper to taste
3 cups milk
vegetable oil for frying
Add potatoes, onion, corn and salt and
pepper to the flour and mix well. Add milk
slowly until you have a thick batter-like
consistency.
Drop tablespoons of the mixture into a hot
frying pan and cook both on sides until
golden brown.







