Heart of America Dairy Expo Speakers
Ryan Yonkman grew up and worked on a mid
size dairy farm in northern Michigan in an area
where dairy and agriculture are the premier
industries. He interned for Rice Dairy and played
a major role in the development of the margin
calculator that Rice Dairy uses to determine a
dairy’s breakeven cost, allowing them to project
up to 2 years ahead and therefore effectively
hedge their inputs and outputs. He also took on several other
projects consisting of building informative dairy spreadsheets. He
opened a hedge account for his Michigan dairy farm (Yonkman
Dairy) back home and has managed the farm’s hedges since then.
Ryan joined the Rice Dairy team in June of 2011 with job title of
Analyst. In this role, one of Ryan’s main goals is to work with Rice
Dairy staff to serve dairymen clients, and continue developing
products and services to help their hedging needs.
Tom Lorenzen has spent a distinguished career
serving the dairy industry, looking for nonnutritional bottlenecks that affect quality milk
production and performance. He focuses on
three areas: dairy audits, education through
milking technician schools, and education
through milk quality presentations to the dairy
industry. Tom developed an Udder Health and
Sanitation program for a major milking equipment company.
He has presented to technical and producer audiences at Afriga
Technical Milk Production Conference at the University of Vet
School in Lugo, Spain, World Dairy Expo in China, Cigal Dairy Show
in Mexico, Wisconsin Fieldman Conference in Wisconsin, Dairy
Conference in Jerusalem, Israel, and the National Mastitis Council
Meeting in the US.
Brent Cousin, DVM, DACT, joined Boehringer
Ingelheim Vetmedica, Inc. in the spring of 2013.
Dr. Cousin currently serves as the Professional
Services Veterinarian for the East Central region,
and has specialized advanced training in animal
reproduction and is experienced in milk quality
Dr. Dan Tracy is a 2001 graduate of Mississippi
State University College of Veterinary Medicine
where he earned a doctorate of veterinary
medicine as well as a masters in dairy production
medicine. After graduation, Dr. Tracy worked as
a large animal practitioner specializing in dairy
production medicine and nutrition. During
his career he has had the opportunity to serve
small and large dairies in VA, TX, KY, and TN. Currently he resides
in Kentucky with his family and works as a technical service
veterinary for Multimin USA.
Andy Vance communicates today’s issues in the
agriculture and food retail industries through
powerful storytelling. A compelling speaker
and expert commentator, Andy shows how
to navigate the often distinct perspectives of
farmers and consumers. He has presents to
dozens of feed and livestock groups annually and
been called upon to moderate discussion panels
for The Animal Agriculture Alliance, the National Association of
Farm Broadcasting and others.
Andy began his career in journalism at ABN Radio in Columbus,
Ohio, and enjoyed several years as Farm Director at WRFD-AM
prior to joining Feedstuffs as the publication’s first-ever broadcast
editor. An award-winning broadcaster, Andy has earned the
Horizon Award from the National Association of Farm Broadcasting
and, with his team at ABN, earned multiple newscast and news
service awards. During his time behind the microphone, he also
became a noted authority on new and social media in agriculture
Joe Horner works as a dairy and beef economist
for the Commercial Agriculture Program at the
University of Missouri. In his position he assists
producers in analyzing farm finances, creates
informal adult educational opportunities for
producers and assists in projects that strengthen
Missouri’s dairy and beef industry. A Southwest
Missouri native, Horner has worked for extension
for 26 years. He spent the first 12 years of
his extension career as a regional extension dairy and farm
management specialist in southeast Missouri before moving to
his current statewide assignment in 2000.
Ron Grusenmeyer grew up on a dairy farm in
southwest Ohio. He holds a bachelor’s degree in
dairy science from the Ohio State University and
has spent his entire career in agriculture.
Ron is the Regional Director of Industry Relations
with Midwest Dairy Association. In this role Ron
works with dairy farmers, dairy farmer leaders,
dairy industry representatives and other key dairy organizations
to enhance the support and understanding of the dairy promotion
program. He collaborate with industry contacts to build consumer
confidence in dairy producers and the industry as it relates to
sustainability, the environment, animal care and food safety.
Previously, Ron was the Director of Member Relations for Dairy
Farmers of America where he was responsible for their national
young leader development, the organization’s policy development
process, and initiated and directed an international agricultural
exchange program for young dairy farmers

“While one stable fly does not cause significant damage, 50–100 of these blood-sucking pests occurring together with 500 horn flies can cause a substantial daily loss of blood. This common

The best listeners in the business.
Being a part of Brownfield Ag News means being part of the greatest team of farm broadcasters in
the world. The amount of respect, honesty, and esteem this group has for each other is unparalleled
in the business. No bunk. Partly, it’s because they’re such a diverse group of ag professionals who are
truly comfortable learning from each other and then building upon each others strengths. But when
they bring their varied backgrounds and areas of expertise together, working seamlessly as a whole,
that’s when the real magic happens. They say a good interviewer has to be a great listener.
So listen… quietly… and you’ll hear…
the voice of American farming.

Missouri Holstein Association-98th Annual Membership Meeting
Saturday, January 25, 2014, 10:00 a.m.,Springfield, MO
President Eric Ling called the meeting to order at 10:15 a.m. Approximately 34 members and guests were present. Tommy Scrivner moved that the
minutes be approved, Jodi Wright 2nd , motion passed.
State Representative Casey Guernsey, a member of the State Ag Committee, addressed the members about the House Bill #1326 that the State of
Missouri is trying to get passed in the legislature. It would set margin insurance at $7.50 for dairy producers.
The financial report was handed out for members to review. Janice Ling moved the financial report be approved, Larry Wright 2nd, motion passed.
District, State, and National Reports
Northwest: No report. West Central: Jay Moreland said the district show was held with the Cass County Fair in Pleasant Hill, plan to do the same for
this year. Southwest: Jodi Wright said they had their district show in conjunction with Ozark Empire Fair. The Futurity was held at College of the
Ozarks. Their district meeting was held in December. South Central: Tommy Scrivner said their district held their 25th Anniversary show on June
15th during the Tri-County Fair. This year the show date is June 14th and will be held with the fair again. Northeast Central: Eric Adkins said they
held their district show during Spring Show and will again this year. They had their district meeting last week. Southeast: Cliff Strieker said they will
have their district meeting when Tim Ewing will be in the area.
State Fair: No report.
Holstein USA: Tim Ewing said that beginning January 1st, that Holstein USA will be doing registration applications and classifications for the Red
and White Dairy Cattle Association. There are no 40 year Holstein members from Missouri this year, however, there are four 50 year members who
will be honored at the National Convention. They include Harlan and Judy Borman, Noel R and Lloyd L Boyd, Larry G Purdom, and the College of
the Ozarks. 2013 Progressive Genetics Awards went to Cla-Cor Farm LLC, Groves-View Dairy, Wilson Martin, and Purina Animal Nutrition Center.
2013 Progressive Breeders Registry Awards went to the College of the Ozarks and Groves-View Dairy.
University Extension: Ted Probert said they held a Dairy Grazing Conference and a Dairy Margins Workshop. There was no Southwest Center
Field Day in 2013 but one is scheduled for September 12, 2014. At the Center they are currently doing reproductive research and fescue research.
A Pasture Based Dairy Course is currently going on. Activities planned for this year include Dairy Profit Seminars, Cow Camp, and Dairy Judging
Camp. The 4-H judging team will be traveling to Europe for an invitational contest in June.
Dairy Shrine: Ray Schooley said there are currently over 20,000 members of the Dairy Shrine. They give $50,000 in scholarships each year. He
invited those who wish to become members to send in applications.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
Show: Larry Wright reported that they will leave the point system the same as last year. State Fair 20 points, Spring Show 15 points, District Show
10 points, bonus points for National shows top half of the class 8 points, bottom half 4 points. Only 1 show will count for bonus points for an animal.
Michelle will calculate points for All Missouri. Winners will be announced when points have been tabulated, approximately Thanksgiving after
Louisville. Awards will be presented at State Convention in January. There will be a photographer scheduled for state fair for professional pictures.
Southern Spring National is set for April 8-12th. It is recommended by the committee to use the Holstein Association’s Judges List for judges for
Spring Show and State Fair.
Spring Show: John Denbigh said the show date is set for Saturday, March 22, 2014. Cattle may begin arriving after 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, March
20th. The fees will remain the same as last year, entry is $25, late entry is $35, class sponsor is $50. There will be no calf sale. The show will begin
at 10:00 am. The University will have straw for sale at $3.00 a bale. Northeast Central District will pay $200 toward the judge. It was brought up by
Jodi Wright that the Northeast Central District contribute more financially toward the show since it is their district show and the state loses money on
the show. It will be discussed at the district meeting in 2014.
Sale: Jason Ewing said the sale was very successful. He thanked Select Sires Mid-America for their sponsorship for the sale meal. The sale
averaged $2601 on all lots and grossed over $33,000. He thanked Gary Estes for auctioneering and all of the sale committee for their hard work.
Larry Wright said they want more consignments for next year and will look to have more state members support. It is critical in order for the sale to
be successful for the state. Professional pictures of consignments are important to a high quality catalog and will be required again next year. Tim
Ewing is currently taking consignments for the Clinton County Sale.
Futurity: Becky Durst gave a report on the winners of the 2013 futurity held October 12, 2013 at the College of the Ozarks, Point Lookout, MO. The
entries for the 2016 futurity are due February 1. The College of the Ozarks has invited us back for 2014. Jodi Wright moved that Becky work with the
Executive Committee to finalize details for the 2014 futurity, Larry Wright 2nd, motion passed unanimously. Michelle asked the membership if they
wanted to change the awards to be something different than chairs. It was the consensus to keep the chairs as awards.
Awards: Ray Schooley gave the report stating they have made changes to the 2013 recommendations based on the request of the board. They
include that the Distinguished Service Award recognize a living or deceased member. The Master Breeder Award recognize a living member, family,
partnership, or corporation and that no more than one award be given each year. The Retired Breeder Award recognize a retired living or deceased
member and that no more than two awards be given each year. The committee strongly recommends the Board take action to nominate deserving
members for the awards offered by the Missouri Dairy Hall of Honors, the National Dairy Shrine, and the Holstein Association USA. They also
recommend that members give consideration to deserving members for the Distinguished Service Award, the Master Breeder Award, and the
Retired Breeder Award in addition to the national awards mentioned above. Members deserve recognition and they must be nominated in order to
be considered. Ray move to accept the recommendations made, Jodi Wright 2nd, motion passed unanimously.
Finance: Roy Parsons went over the financials from 2013,the new budget will be close to break even. It is requested that the finance committee
receive the financial statements earlier in order to have more time to work on the budget before the annual meeting. The committee has discussed
looking at other options to try to make better use of our funds, it is recommended that we keep it the same and not make changes at this time.
Lloyd Gunter from the Missouri Dairy Association spoke to the members. He welcomed us on behalf of MDA and thanked us for coming. The Farm
Bill is currently on the House floor in Washington without the Dairy Stabilization attached to it, however, margin insurance is included in the bill. MDA
is currently working with Missouri House Bill #1326 which puts margin insurance at $7.50. If passed, the state will cover the difference in margin up
to $7.50 not covered by the federal. There is also an educational part attached to benefit ag students. This bill looks promising but our help is needed
to contact representatives to vote yes. MDA is wanting to increase membership, you can sign up with dues paid as a milk check deduction.

OLD BUSINESS:
History Book: John Underwood said the books are still for sale. There are ads being placed in the Mid-States for corrections, older pictures have
been found since the book was printed. A few more corrections will be made in the near future.
Association Audit: Eric Ling talked about the status of the audit. Michelle gave a current report. It was voted on by the Board that we could not
afford an audit so we opted to do a financial review. The initial draft of the review has been finished. There are no discrepancies found by the
accounting firm. The price estimate at the beginning was $2000-3000. It has been a much more time consuming project than anticipated and the
current time put in is close to $7000. The Executive Board will meet with the accountants to discuss the billing. The final report should be available
soon.
National Convention Sale Receivables: Eric said that the money owed to the Association from the National Convention Sale has been collected
and deposited in July of 2013. A letter from an attorney was sent in which Dallas Burton paid the full amount due.
State Association mergers: Michelle reported that no response was received from Arkansas to meet with Missouri. It was heard that Arkansas has
decided to join Oklahoma instead. There are some Arkansas members who have chosen to join Missouri instead.
State Travel to District meetings: Michelle proposed the pros and cons of state representatives not attending District meetings. It has become
more difficult to collect dues, schedule Breeder Pages, inform members of junior and adult association activities, and it is more difficult for Holstein
Rep Tim Ewing to schedule and attend meetings. There seems to be less members attending meetings this year and some districts did not have a
meeting. It costs the state an average of $600 to have the secretary and junior advisor attend. Jodi Wright moved that we reinstate paying the
expense of state travel to district meetings, Brad Groves 2nd, motion passes. Cliff Strieker spoke that it is not necessary for travel to the Southeast
District as there are so few members.
NEW BUSINESS:
Central File Storage: Jodi Wright said that it would be a good idea to be able to store the association information in a central file location. There are
many different options and costs available. She recommended this be referred to the Board for further discussion.
Field Day: Larry Wright offered to host Field Day at his farm in Verona, MO in 2014. There were no other offers.
Mid-States: Michelle brought up some of the issues that have happened with the magazine. The association has not received copies of the print
versions since 2012. There seems to be an unwillingness of the sharing of information from the Mid-States, especially pictures. The pricing structure
does not encourage advertisers, other print publications offer price breaks for large ads and multiple issue ads. The Mid-States is not being
competitive with other publications. Sue Ann Steele says the magazine is not in a good financial state as other states have not been paying for their
part. The ad prices have not changed in 19 years. It was offered that we could put together a committee to help if necessary. Sue Ann said she
would look into the situation further and let us know.
4-H Judging Team: Ted Probert talked about the judging team raising money to go to Europe for an invitational judging contest. Team members
are Steven Nelson, Tucker Peterson, Bailee Whitehead, and Brittney Groves. Donations can be made to the Missouri 4-H Foundation and can be
given to Ted or any team member. Mike Wilson talked about the experience of the Europe trip. It is planned for June 18th through July 2nd. Larry
Wright moved we give the team $5000, Jason Ewing 2nd, motion passed.
By-Laws: Alfred Brandt said the By-Law committee has come up with some proposed changes to the by-laws. He read those proposals and then
recommended we wait until the next annual meeting to vote on them. Jason Ewing moved we vote on changes at the next annual meeting, Larry
Wright 2nd, motion passed unanimously.
Resolutions: Jay Moreland read the 2013 Resolutions. Jay moved they be accepted, Jodi Wright 2nd, motion passed unanimously.
Nominating Committee: Tommy Scrivner gave the committee recommendation that the officer slate remain the same, President, Eric Ling; VicePresident, Jay Moreland; Secretary-Treasurer, Michelle Eilenstine; and Director at Large, Brad Groves. Tommy moved the officers remain the same,
Sue Ann Steele 2nd, motion passed unanimously.
Junior Committee report: Breezy Gardner gave the junior report. She is the 2014 Junior President. $3400 was raised with the raffle calf and they
plan to do another one this year. They are currently looking for a calf to be donated. The juniors will keep the Junior All Missouri points the same,
Futurity money will continue to be paid to juniors, and the junior advisor stipend will remain the same at $500. New officers were elected in their
meeting. They are collecting pennies for the Penny Wars for National Convention. Several junior members are planning on attending and competing
at National Convention.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Futurity entries are due February 1. The Region 7 Holstein Association meetings will be available online this year. Members are encouraged to sign
up for the Breeder Page on the website. Janice Ling mentioned the low participation in voting for the Cow of the Year Award. Members need to be
more proactive in sending in their ballots and participating.
Jason Ewing moved the meeting be adjourned, Robert Perry 2nd, motion passed unanimously.
Respectfully submitted,
Michelle Eilenstine

of us grew up on farms or in rural
communities, and many of us still live
there today. These experiences give
us a real understanding of agriculture
and what it takes to build a farm. our
passion for rural missouri drives us
but our experience and knowledge sets
us apart from other lenders.
