New Businesses and Activity in the West End
Volunteers and Vendors Wanted for 2014 Rockwell Park Summer Festival NEWSLETTER BEST END BOOKS Inspired By Pride Rockwell Park Summer Festival, August 16th This year’s Rockwell Park Summer Festival, held Saturday, August 16 from 10 am to 6 pm, promises to surpass last year’s incredibly successful event, with new and returning bands and musical acts, athletic competitions, great new and returning food and craft vendors and many additional featured activities. Held to showcase and celebrate Rockwell Park, this festival is hosted and sponsored by The West End Association, with financial support from several local organizations and businesses. Thomaston Savings Bank, Bristol Hospital, Liberty Bank, Wheeler Clinic, United Bank and the Bristol Republican Town Committee have already stepped up as sponsors, and the West End Association welcomes additional sponsors. Events will include basketball, volleyball and skateboard competitions, an antique car show, an art show, and the hugely popular “Kid’s Zone,” run by Imagine Nation Museum and sponsored by Liberty Bank. Many new food, crafts and service vendors will attend, buoyed by last year’s record turnout of more than 10,000 visitors to this completely free event. The Festival also will feature a “Wing Ding,” where local restaurants famous for their barbecued chicken wings will compete for “Best of Show” designation – based on votes from patrons. A free raffle for a 42-inch flat screen television will be held for everyone who completes a raffle ticket at the Festival entry area. The winner doesn’t have to be on site for the drawing, held late in the day, but entries are in-person only. The television has been generously donated by Bobroske Construction and Tim Bobroske, vice president of The West End Association. For more information on the Festival, visit www.facebook.com/WestEndAssociation, and click on “events.” July 1 through August 19 – Rockin’ Out at Rockwell Summer Concert Series Tuesday Evenings, 7-8:30 pm, Rockwell Park July 2 – Water Around the World Rockwell Park, 4-8:30 pm, with a FREE Concert 7-8:30 pm by America’s Got Talent, season 7 semi-finalists REVERSE ORDER Walk-ins Welcome West End Association is on Nutmeg Television four one-hour Walk-ins Welcome! Since our last issue in January, a lot of effort has gone into working with City government and Departments to help improve our streets, reduce blight, and ensure code enforcement. An obvious police presence in the West End – particularly at the intersection of School and West Streets – has helped reduce vagrancy, drug activity and loitering on sidewalks and in store fronts. There has been an exodus of some less-appealing businesses and those not complying with City zoning and health laws, and we are working to bring new businesses to the intersection and surrounding streets. 860-314-2695 Our second annual “Taste of Bristol,” held in March, was a huge success. Thanks to the more than 30 participating Bristol restaurants and food establishments, the 1,000 discount ticket purchasers, and the merchants who donated gift certificates for our raffle.
