“Expanding Minds, Building Character, and Inspiring Community Action”
All teachers will be working together and planning together. Lessons and material that will be
reviewed, taught, and discussed in each subject
area will be on the same topic. Also, students will
play a more active, hands-on role, in the learning
process. Incorporating these tactics into the classroom will guarantee student mastery of various
subject matters.
I
excitedly welcome each and everyone
back to another wonderful school year. To
our first time students, we welcome you into
our educational family. The staff and administration eagerly await your arrival on August 22,
2011.
The Beatrice Mayes Institute faculty, staff, and
administration have been extremely busy this past
summer preparing for the upcoming 2011-2012
school year. We have participated in a plethora of
workshops and trainings geared toward furthering
our expertise in various areas of our curriculum as
well as fine tuning classroom management skills.
A massive amount of time has been spent reviewing instructional materials that will add to the
academic development of each student. Just as
much time was spent devising a method that will
be introduced this school year that would allow
students to incorporate what was learned in one
subject area and carry it to other subject areas.
This method is known as collaborative teaching.
While these great plans have been made for our
students, it is impossible for the BMI faculty, staff,
and administration to carry out these plans without the assistance of our parents. Children receive
the best education when supportive parents and
dedicated teachers work as a team. Parents,
though you are not members of our teaching staff,
each of you play a pivotal role in your children’s
education. It has been proven over and over again
that a child’s educational achievement, growth,
and development are inevitable when parents
play an active and constant role in their children’s
academic career. I strongly encourage every parent to take time from your busy schedule to become familiar with or re-familiarize yourself with
the school and our policies, so that a productive
relationship can be established; and your child
can excel. Remember, together we can achieve
wonderful things.
I am anxiously waiting for the 2011-2012 academic school year to begin. I am filled with a feeling of undeniable excitement. Our school has
grown tremendously and positive changes are
taking place. There are new highly qualified
teachers to meet, new books to be read, new
friendships to be formed, and new skills to be mastered. Welcome once again to each of you. I am
looking forward to another dynamic school year.
Educationally yours,
Mrs. Beatrice Mayes
Knowledge is POWER
During the 2011-2012 school year we will be
empowering our students with essential
knowledge and skills that will enable them to be successful in any academic arena. We plan to
accomplish this by our active participation in the STEM Program
Program. The acronym for the STEM is:
Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Students, at BMI, we will not focus on this
program in our Math and Science classes alone. Some aspect of the STEM Program will be taught
in all subject areas. Our involvement in this program will improve the quality of education that our
students receive daily. No longer will simple pencil/paper assignments be the only way to introduce lessons to our students. Instead students will be exposed to new material in a more active
way. Students will be encouraged and trained to view ideas in a critical manner. This concept will
develop critical thinkers. This is the type of thinker that will be required to meet the future needs of
our society.
Along with the development of the critical thinker, we will also be preparing our students for the
future by broadening their minds. Students will be exposed to different career choices associated
with science and math. Careers that they may not have known about before being introduced
to the STEM Program. These are the careers that are necessary for the future growth of our society. The STEM Program will allow us the opportunity to enable our students to take a more active
role in the learning process.
Academic emphasis on the core content areas of Reading, Language Arts, Math, Science, and
Social Studies will not be compromised because of the STEM Program. Instead we will be providing each student with instruction in these areas that will create independent, active learners who
will be equipped to compete with the best academically in any and all academic areas.
Branches of Communication
Exciting updates for the New
School Year: In response to
our budget cuts, we are scaling back on the amount of paper that we use. Our main method of communication in the past has been through paper flyers. We are now going PAPERLESS!!! All information will be
sent through electronic media. Methods of communication to provide important information to our parents will be initiated through electronic media. Electronic media that will be used include; emails, text messages, website calendar and our Marquee messages.
This Newsletter will serve as your only paper documentation of our yearly school activities. All
other documents; lunch menu, monthly event calendar, event flyers, and others notifications will be available online 24 hours a day. Reminders of events, updates to any events or requests to RSVP for events will
be sent via email, text messages, and/or on the Marquee. Make sure all of your personal information such
as email addresses and cell phone numbers are up to date.
Your child’s teacher will be able to communicate to you, the parent, using our text message and email system as well. All communication whether from a teacher or the administration office will be sent through
our Renweb system.
***** IMPORTANT***** All parents must have an email address on-file. If you do on have an email
address, you are able to set one up for FREE using domains such as yahoo, hotmail and msn.com. If you
do not have access to a computer, we will have a computer lab available to all parents of a BMI registered
student.
