Why are we asking you to do this? It’s very simple. Please read on… In 1955 the North Fort Myers Fire Control & Rescue District was established under State Legislation. This means that the North Fort Myers Fire District (NFMFD) was specifically chartered by the voters of North Fort Myers to protect and serve the community as an independent district and would be funded using ad valorem methodology. Since 1955 community growth and increased call volume demanded that the NFMFD eventually would expand operations to include four fire stations. But, in 2008 the recession hit hard and adversely affected the NFMFD budget. In fact, the recession hit the NFMFD so hard that it forced the district to downsize significantly. In order to survive the recession, one of the four fire stations was closed and 12 firefighter positions, as well as six administrative positions, were eliminated. In addition, first response vehicles and apparatus were sold, overtime and comp time for personnel were reduced, benefits were reduced, training and education were reduced and no NFMFD employees have received any pay raises since 2008. And today, in mid 2016, the NFMFD is facing further cuts if financial stability cannot be realized. The NFMFD protects a 36-square mile zone that extends north to the Charlotte county line, east to the railroad tracks on Bayshore Blvd, south to the banks of the Caloosahatchee River and west to the boundaries of Cape Coral. The services provided by the NFMFD include fire suppression, rescue and basic life support, as well as response to non-emergency incidents such as patient lift assists (a service often used by our residents here at HOLY TRINITY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH 19251 N.
