ALUM NOTES
News from TROY Alumni
FROM THE DESK
OF THE CHANCELLOR
We often speak of the Troy University family to describe collectively our alumni, students, faculty,
staff and friends, but the subjects of the cover story of this edition of the Troy University magazine
are part of a true TROY family. The Guttensohn quintuplets from Montgomery are members of our
2014 freshman class, following a course charted for them in August of 1996.
Sons of TROY alumni Amy and Eric, the Guttensohns—Hunter, Mason, Parker, Tanner and Taylor—
were awarded scholarships at birth. They received nationwide attention as the first set of all-male
quintuplets born in the United States. Read more about this fascinating Trojan family beginning on
page seven.
Speaking of scholarships, this issue shines the spotlight on many of those who make these grants
possible. Our honor roll of donors provides the extramural funding that enables our University
to award special scholarships, provide opportunities for faculty and students to travel and study
abroad and maintain our facilities on the most beautiful campuses in Alabama. Take time to peruse
this list of Trojans who are going the extra mile to support their University. And, if your name is
not on the list, pleased consider making a gift to TROY. Even a small donation can make a big
difference in the life of your University.
Fall is also the season to honor the members of our Trojan family who have gone above and
beyond the call of duty in support of their alma mater. This year’s roster of honorees is especially
distinguished. Congratulations to our Alumni of the Year:

of Manchester, England, Murapa represented
the Trojans at two national championships.
Now a digital and social media marketing
consultant, he had a successful career in the
golf and leisure industry in England, and, as a
consultant, his clients have included a South
African resort voted “World Resort of the Year”
and an Irish property voted “European Resort
of the Year” in 2010. He challenged students
to make the most of their experience at TROY.

It’s also my pleasure to extend congratulations to the winner of our Distinguished Leadership
Award, which we began in 2000 as a way to honor Trojans who have excelled in their chosen
fields. We have honored business leaders, a television journalist, educators and public servants.
This year we honor Steve Southerland, a member of the class of 1987 who represents the Second
Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. Rep. Southerland is the second
member of Congress to receive this award, as we honored former U.S. Rep. Earl Hutto in 2005.

TAYLOR
MASON
The nation’s only set
of male quintuplets
started a new
chapter in their
lives in August:
COLLEGE.
Attending Troy University was a simple choice, each of the
Guttensohn quints said in his own way.
The brothers are actually Trojan legacies – parents Amy and
Eric Guttensohn of Montgomery have degrees from TROY
– and are enjoying the fruits of a scholarship endowment
established at their birth.
“I think some of us thought about going to college
somewhere else, but not that seriously,” said Taylor, the
youngest by about four minutes. The others quickly agreed.
As the nations only set of male quintuplets, Taylor and his
brothers Tanner, Mason, Parker and Hunter have had their
share of media attention over the years. It doesn’t look like it has phased them one bit. Their adjustment to college
has been typical – except, perhaps, for their living arrangement.
HUNTER
A four-bedroom suite in Trojan Village was altered to accommodate five bedrooms, giving the brothers their firstever taste of having their own bedrooms.
“We’re away from each other more than ever before, but there hasn’t been anything strange about that,” said
Parker, commenting that their academic and campus work schedules don’t necessarily line up well.
But they’re back together enough for them, sharing time in the dorm room that barely has enough space for a
common living room. They’re glad to have bedrooms of their own though, and all agree it might be impossible to
throw a big bash in their dorm environs.
Still, about a month into their experience, the transition to college life has been smooth.
“It’s not as difficult as I thought,” said Taylor. “I thought not having Mom and Dad there to wake me up, or keep me
on schedule might be tough, but it hasn’t been a hard adjustment. It’s just all up to me (to keep myself on track).”
Parker
Hunter echoed the sentiment: “It’s not Montgomery. We’re on our own more and we have more responsibility.”
“I never really had a picture of going to class or walking across campus in my mind, but there have been no
surprises. It is definitely an awesome campus,” Mason said.
Troy isn’t Montgomery, but the transition to college life has also been eased by friends who are fellow students
on the Troy Campus. And, like many freshmen, the Guttensohn quints have already picked up on the use of the
traditional “Saga” in reference to Trojan Dining.
“Saga is definitely a new focal point,” Tanner said.

A True
Trojan Warrior
A Troy University alumnus, retired
Command Sgt. Maj. Bennie G. Adkins,
received the Medal of Honor from President
Obama on Monday, Sept. 15, during a
ceremony at the White House.
Troy University leaders said that Adkins,
who holds three degrees from TROY, is
an outstanding example of courage and
dedication.
“It is often said that freedom is not free.
Command Sergeant Major Bennie Adkins
proved the validity of this statement by
demonstrating great courage under fire,”
said Troy University Chancellor Dr. Jack
Hawkins, Jr. “He is a credit to his nation’s
military, a credit to Alabama and a credit
to Troy University. We are very proud of
his heroic and courageous action under
devastating circumstances, and we are very
proud that he is a Troy University Trojan.”
Adkins, a U.S. Army veteran, served three
tours in Vietnam. He was recognized for his
actions during 38 hours of close-combat
fighting against enemy forces on March 9 to
12, 1966. At that time, then-Sergeant First
Class Adkins was serving as an Intelligence
Sergeant with Detachment A-102, 5th
Special Forces Group, 1st Special Forces at
Camp “A Shau,” in the Republic of Vietnam.
“Command Sergeant Major Adkins’ courage
and commitment to excellence have won
him our country’s highest military honor, and
we are immensely proud of this outstanding
Troy University alumnus, who exemplifies
our strong ties to our armed forces and
veterans,” said Maj. Gen. Walter D. Givhan,
USAF Retired, and TROY’s Senior Vice
Chancellor for Advancement and Economic
Development. “He epitomizes the qualities
of a true Trojan Warrior.”

Students become
part of ‘larger world’
For seven Troy University students, a summer study abroad trip provided a
glimpse into the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
With Harvard University, Wheaton College and Boston College, Troy University
sends at least five students each summer to the Leon Levy Expedition to
Ashkelon, one of the largest archeological digs in the Middle East.
Ashkelon, Israel lies between Gaza and Tel Aviv and the middle ground proved
too close for comfort when hostilities between Palestinians and Israelis escalated
over the summer. The military action cut the students’ trip short by two weeks.
Dr. Bill Grantham, associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and,
himself, a former participant at the excavation, said safety was the primary
concern. “While hostilities are often a part of the scenery in Israel, it is better to
err on the side of caution when student safety is concerned,” he said.
Two students, Ben Conner, a senior from Prattville, and Joel Jackson, a
graduate student from Millbrook, serve on staff for the expedition. “In some
cases we had just 15 seconds to take shelter from a rocket attack coming from
Gaza,” Jackson said. “It could get intense some times.”
Alanna Cook, a junior psychology major from Grove Hill, kept a blog during her
travels to Israel and expressed the experience of the conflict, from taking shelter
to watching Israel’s “Iron Dome” in action.
July 8 became known as “War Day” for the group, when the Israeli government
closed schools and advised people to stay near shelters. Expedition leaders
decided to follow suit.
“Laryssa [my roommate] heard a boom and looked out the window. She
spotted the rocket just before the sirens sounded, and people started running to
the bunker,” she wrote in her “I Saw the Light” post on “The Adventures of the
Trojan Traveler” blog
Perhaps that’s the key realization for all TROY study abroad programs: Being a
part of a larger world.
Chancellor Dr. Jack Hawkins often characterizes the internationalization of the
University as an attempt for graduates to “be competitive on a global stage.”
That competitiveness doesn’t come without exposure to different cultures.
In all, 138 students traveled to Costa Rica, Cuba, Spain, London, Paris, China,
Ireland, South Korea, Belgium, Germany and Israel over the summer.
WOMEN TRADE COURT
MAESTRI FOR ITALY
By Matt Mayes
For the women’s basketball team, an August
trip to Italy was much more than just basketball.
The Trojans spent eight days in Italy, making
stops in Rome, Florence, Pisa, Venice,
Montecatini Terme, and Trieste in a once-ina-lifetime cultural experience, and went 2-0 in
games in the latter two cities.
“On the basketball court, success hinges a lot
on chemistry,” said sophomore junior college
transfer Caitlyn Ramirez. “I think on our trip to
Italy we built a lot of chemistry on and off the
court. Even though I’m new to the program this
season, our trip to Italy made me feel like I’ve
been around my teammates for years.”
The NCAA allows basketball teams a foreign
tour once every four years, allowing coaches to
get in some playing time, as well as 10 days of
extra practice. While important for a team of
relatively new players, for student-athletes, the
trip offered the added dimension of interaction
with people of different cultures.
Kourtney Coleman, the team’s only four-year
senior, enjoyed the court time, but like her
teammates, gained more than that.
“To be able to go to another country, play two
games and win was one of the best experiences
in my life,” Coleman said. “But off the court,
it was just like being on a family vacation, and
that’s really special.”
Sophomore Kristen Emerson was the only
player on the TROY roster that had previously
visited Italy, enjoyed seeing her teammates
experience the culture.
“It was neat to get to see their facial
expressions when we visited Venice, the
Colosseum and places like that,” Emerson said.
“Because I’ll never forget visiting those places
and it’s cool to see that they’ll never forget
them either.”
The Trojans’ players and their coaching
staff now hope the 2-0 showing on the court
translates to success on the floor in Trojan
Arena and around the Sun Belt in 2014-15.

a TROY student, is employed
by Harvard as a site director

on-going in Israel.
“I didn’t. I stood on the balcony and watched. The light kept shining brighter
then dimming off, sometimes allowing me to see the smoke rising or sparks
falling. Other lights shot up into the sky and there were lots of booms. The
moment only lasted two or three minutes, I’m sure, but it felt much longer, and
it was beautiful in a terrifying way. I’ve never seen war, and I hope I never do,
but those rockets are the closest I’ve ever been, and it scared me. Now, I know
there’s nothing to worry about, but the whole situation just serves as one of
those reminders that I am such a small part of such a large world,” she wrote.

Coach Mark Smartt and Coach Bobby Pierce
C H A N G E-U P AT R I D D L E-PAC E
As head coach of the Troy University baseball team for the
past 12 seasons, Bobby Pierce has taken the program to
new heights at the Division I level. Four NCAA tournament
appearances, three Sun Belt Conference championships and
one Atlantic Sun Conference title speak only partially to the
level of success Pierce’s teams have enjoyed.
In the dugout, he is eerily subdued, speaking only when
necessary. It’s enough to drive an error prone infielder
to the brink of paranoia, but also draw the immediate
attention of those he addresses. On Wednesday, Aug. 13,
he was no different as he stood at a podium in front of an
auditorium full of television cameras, newspaper reporters,
administrative personnel, family, friends as well as current
and former players. Following a brief opening statement,
Pierce told the audience of his decision to retire as TROY’s
baseball coach following the 2015 season. He spoke with a
smile, no tears, but with full confidence.
“As bittersweet as this decision was for me to make due
to my genuine love for coaching and the wonderful place
in which I currently work, I am convinced that it is the right
decision at the right time for me and my family,” Pierce
said. “I wanted to get this announcement out of the way
so that the University, the athletic department and the
baseball program could start moving forward with minimal
distractions and continue to build on TROY baseball’s
tradition of success.”
“Although I’ve known (Pierce) for 25 years, the opportunity
to work side-by-side with him for the last 12 years has been
extremely special to me. His record as a coach speaks for
As Pierce’s assistant for the last 12 years, Smartt has served
as the more vocal member of the highly successful duo.
Smartt has cardinal, silver and black coursing through his
veins. As a player, he helped lead the Trojans to back-toback NCAA Division II national championships in 1986 and
1987. Smartt started his coaching career as a graduate
assistant at TROY. In 1990, he was hired as an assistant at
the University of West Alabama and five years later was
named the program’s head coach. In his time in Livingston,
Smartt’s teams broke or tied 38 school records, produced
two All-Americans, seven all-region and 10 All-Gulf South
Conference selections.
Smartt was called home in 2002 when Pierce was hired
at TROY and it is with the Trojans’ baseball program that
he belongs. Smartt was named TROY’s next head coach
at the same press conference that Pierce announced his
retirement.
“I am extremely proud that I will eventually become the
head coach at my alma mater,” an emotional Smartt said
at the press conference. “It’s quite overwhelming, to be
honest. To know that I’ll be listed among the same names as
Riddle and Bobby is really hard for me to fathom.”
Following the 2015 season, Smartt will become the 13th
head coach in the program’s history. It will soon be his turn
to continue the winning tradition established by Riddle and
Pierce. The decision to select Smartt was a natural one and
backed by one simple fact – both men atop TROY’s all-time
wins list have offered Smartt a spot in the Trojans’ dugout.

O F E V E RY L I T T L E L E AG U E R
From the first game of catch in the back yard, the dream of every little boy who puts on a glove and swings a bat is
to be a big leaguer. Former TROY student-athlete Chase Whitley saw that dream come true on May 15 when he got
the call to “The Show” as the starting pitcher for the New York Yankees.
“It was pretty surreal,” Whitley said. “It was kind of humbling and showed that I wasn’t in control of my career, but
the Lord was in control. It was a really defining moment of Him showing His plan in my life.”
Whitley, a career reliever in the minor leagues, was called upon to start for the Yankees after C.C. Sabathia and
Michael Pineda were both placed on the disabled list. In his debut against the New York Mets, Whitley did not allow
a run over 4.2 innings of work and even picked up a base hit in his first career at-bat.
Whitley was in the middle of his third season with the Yankees’ AAA affiliate in Scranton-Wilkes Barre when he got
the call.
“Once I got on the field it was a surreal moment because I never thought I would get there,” Whitley said, “There
were times where I thought to myself about why I am still playing. To be able to get up and have some success has
been pretty cool.”
Success is an understatement to the beginning of Whitley’s big league career as he won his first three decisions and
carried a 2.56 earned run average after his first eight starts.
Whitley led the Trojans with a 7-3 record, seven saves and a 3.68 ERA in his lone season at TROY (2010). The native
of Ranburne, Ala., made 32 appearances on the season, all out of the bullpen, and also led the Trojans with a .364
batting average to go along with 11 doubles, three triples and 10 home runs.
“TROY will always have a special place with me even though I was there for just one year,” Whitley said. “All the
support and encouragement from TROY have been extra special. Coach Pierce and Coach Smartt took a chance on
me to allow me to continue playing after junior college, and I owe them a lot and appreciate them.”
Coming from a small town in Alabama to the big lights of New York City and a clubhouse filled with players like
Derek Jeter, Mark Teixeria, Ichiro Suzuki and Carlos Beltran, Whitley still has to tell himself that it is real when he goes
to work every day.
“It’s pretty neat every day I go into the clubhouse,” Whitley said. “It was Derek Jeter Day the other day and I was
like ‘what am I doing here right now.’ I have to pinch myself sometimes to make sure this is all real.”

There is little doubt that Pierce has plenty to smile about.
For 12 seasons, the 2010 Alabama Baseball Coaches
Association Hall of Fame inductee has done nothing more
than produce conference contenders year in and year out.
He will enter the 2015 season, his last, just 15 wins shy of
breaking Chase Riddle’s record of 434 career wins at TROY’s
head coach.
itself, but it does not begin to tell his story,” Mark Smartt
said. “He has the unique ability to bring out the best in
everyone that is associated with him and he is held in high
regard with anyone that comes in contact with him.”

University degree. Indeed, numerous indicators reflect enhanced quality and excellence in performance. Here’s a glimpse
of success stories each of you enabled by your contributions:
• The Alabama Commission on Higher Education approved TROY’s first-ever doctor of philosophy degree – the Ph.D. in Sport Management.
• The National Endowment for the Arts awarded Troy University a “Big Read” program grant, making it the only University in the state of Alabama to receive the grant during the current cycle. “The Big Read” program seeks to expose citizens to great works of literature and encourages them to read for pleasure and enrichment.
• TROY’s Department of Theatre and Dance production, “Single Girls Guide,” won the Kennedy Center’s American College Theatre Festival Musical Theatre Award at regional competition and advanced to the National Festival.
• Learning By Design named Troy University’s Trojan Arena as an outstanding project in its Spring 2014 Architectural Review Showcase.
• TROY formed the nation’s first Collegiate Exchange Club at a public institution of higher learning.
• The Association of Collegiate Marketing Educators named Dr. Gordon G. Mosley, Associate Professor of Marketing, as its 2014 Outstanding Educator of the Year.
• Princeton Review named Troy University as one of the “Best in the Southeast” for the 10th year in a row.
• Our information technology, psychology, criminal justice, human services, Master of Business Administration and master’s programs in Management and Human Resources programs were ranked among the best nationally
by various associations.
• “Best Colleges for Veterans” and “Top Military Friendly University” awards were received from U.S. News and World Report, Military Times and Military Advanced Education.
And these honors mentioned represent only some of the accolades our programs,
faculty and students have garnered. The dollars being invested in TROY are paying
huge dividends!
Your gifts are important to us. As such, we are pleased to recognize your dedicated

2014 ORNAMENT HIGHLIGHTS
TROJAN WARRIOR SPIRIT
The Troy University Alumni
Association’s 2014 commemorative
ornament, featuring the Warrior
Spirit campaign, is available for
purchase. The ornament features the
Trojan helmet used in various ways
in the University’s new advertising
campaign, including a mobile website
(troytrojanspirit.com) that allows
viewers to place the half helmet on a
photo they supply or take.
The ornaments are $20 and an order
form is available on the alumni page
of the University’s website, www.
troy.edu. The Alumni Association
began offering the commemorative
ornaments in 1999, depicting special
times in the University’s history.
Past ornaments are also available
for purchase. Proceeds from sales
help the Alumni Association award
scholarships to deserving students.
For information, contact the Alumni
Affairs Office at 334-670-3318.
