FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK
We are now heading rapidly towards the end of Term One. Students and teachers are preparing for
and completing end of term assessment. As we head into another busy part of the year, it is
important for students to focus on the goals and targets they have set for themselves in order for
them to achieve their very best.
International Women’s Day was acknowledged last Friday with a BBQ breakfast cooked by our male
staff and students. Our School Captain, Holly Ryan delivered a fantastic speech to the students and
staff in attendance that put the achievements of many great women into perspective. It was a very
uplifting morning.
Following this our Junior Secondary students were privileged to welcome some guest speakers to
their assemblies this week. Bridget Mather from the Zonta Club delivered a wonderful speech to the
female Junior Secondary students, while our male students had some great male role models speak
to them about being responsible young men.
Our WAVE (Well-being Academic Values Education) program also allowed for our entire Year 10
cohort to learn some Tai Chi moves on the terraces, while back in the classroom our Senior
students are rigorously preparing for the Queensland Core Skills (QCS) test.
The P & C Annual General Meeting was held last Monday evening. Congratulations to our newly
elected P & C Executives and representatives on the various sub committees. Our P & C are
involved in a lot of work around our school and most recently, the P & C has been responsible for
acquiring the new covered outdoor learning areas in the school grounds, which have been a
fantastic and worthwhile addition to our school.
A huge thank you to all our Year 7 and 8 parents who joined us on the deck last week for the Meet
and Greet. It was fantastic to see so many of our students and their parents mingling and
introducing themselves to the Junior Secondary teachers. It was a lovely evening that also
showcased some of our excellent student work in areas such as Music, Art, cooking, and catering. It
was the contribution and collaboration of many that made this evening so successful and positive.

STUDENT SERVICES
I am lucky enough to be part of the Student Services Support team which includes our two guidance officers,
Karen O’Keefe and Julie Woods, two heads of department, Kath West (wellbeing) and Carolyn Thomas
(behaviour support), the community education counsellor, Laurel Dodd, our chaplain, Kalvin Hart, the school
nurse, Rachel Archer and the school police officer, Kerrie Purcell. This team meets every week, to look at
programs and initiatives to improve student wellbeing in our school, as well as focusing on students who need
extra support in our school community. The goal of the student service team is to increase students’ emotional,
social, physical and spiritual resilience in order to enhance their potential in achieving academic success.
PARENT COMMUNICATION
An important part of our school community is promoting effective communication between the school and
home. We know that working with parents keeps all parties engaged and supported and ultimately provides
higher outcomes for students. The variety of communication methods we use are the school newsletter, website,
facebook page, individual phone calls and emails, as well as the school diary. It is an expectation that students
are using their school diary for notes, timetabling, homework, and assessment reminders. It is important to
manage a range of different subjects and extracurricular events through effective use of the diary. We will be
checking diary use over the coming weeks.
Also, a reminder to parents that their student can access the assessment calendar through www.oslp.eq.edu.au.
The students can use their regular user ID and password and this will allow access to timetable, assessment
schedule and subject selections when required.
I wish you all a wonderful week.

Junior Secondary News
It has been a busy few weeks in Junior Secondary
with numerous events and opportunities for
students. Over the last two weeks we have had our
Junior Secondary Meet and Greet, International
Women’s Day breakfast and celebrations and the
Year 9 Information Evening. The Junior Secondary
Meet and Greet welcomed our Year 7 and 8
students and parents into our school community and
provided opportunity to showcase what is happening
in Junior Secondary in 2015, as well as introduce
parents to our Junior Secondary teachers. The
event was well supported and we hope parents
found the evening enjoyable and beneficial. Thank
you to the F1 team, WAVE team, peer mentors,
Junior Secondary leaders, Catering4Futures team
and Junior Secondary staff for their involvement in
the event.
International Women’s Day in the Junior Secondary Precinct
International Women’s Day was celebrated on
Friday 6th March with the joining of our Year 7,
8 and 12 girls for a breakfast cooked by the
senior boys and staff.
The breakfast, trivia
and speech by Holly Ryan were all excellent
and provided an excellent opportunity for
interaction between our Junior and Senior
School students.
Thank you to the staff and senior boys for
their involvement and in particular to Mrs
Wallace, Mr
Shaw and Ms Auriac for
organising the event. International Women’s
Day was further celebrated at our Junior
Secondary Assembly on Wednesday 10th
March, with guest presentations from our
school Zonta girls and Bridget Mather from
Zonta Mackay.

JSP Courtyard Trivia
One of our projects during the Tuesday lunch hour was to offer students the chance to compete in a Trivia Competition. The
challenge was received very well by Year 7, 8 and 9 students alike. The team entries included the ‘???’, the
‘Chabaileimaymoomoo’s’ (only the team members could confidently pronounce their name!), the ‘Kool Katz’, the
‘Bubbles’ and the ‘Yak Lamas’. After two rounds of questions on Music and Movies, the ‘Kool Katz’ were in the lead. There
was some suggestion at this stage that the ‘Kool Katz’ had an advantage because they were Year 9 students. Our Peer
Mentors, led by Josiah McCarthy assured all students age had played no advantage! Our Mentors tallied the final scores
and by a two point margin the ‘???’s’ were the WINNERS! Congratulations to Emily Burgess, Jana Bessan, Ella Sippel,
Dylan Ashford, Cole Saunders and Emma McDonald. Another round of Courtyard Trivia is being organised for next week
and this time the Year 9s have entered two teams! The shame of defeat to Year 7s is something they are keen to rectify!
Red Kite Support
Last week students from Year 9
helped Miss Williams coordinate a
fundraiser for ‘Red Kite’ – supporting
kids, young people and families with
cancer. The students gathered on the
deck and enjoyed the sausage sizzle.
This was an excellent way for our
Year 9s to show responsibility and
lead the our 7s and 8s. Thank you to
Mount Pleasant Butcher, Blinky Bill
Butcher and Brumbys for their
generous donations.
North Star
Thank you to the P and C for their support and supply of
prizes for the North Star which is a positive reward and
recognition initiative.

STUDENT RESOURCE SCHEME FEES AND SUBJECT FEES
I would like to thank all parents and caregivers for their patience and understanding with the increase of Student Resource Scheme and Subject fees and the changes we have made to how we calculate our Year 11 and 12 fees.
In previous years the Student Resource Scheme Participation Form was sent home with students on their first day.
This year we were unable to distribute the Participation Form on the first day which caused some confusion. Once
again I would like to thankyou for your patience and understanding with this.

Senior Secondary News
End of first term Year 11 and 12 exam block will run from Wednesday 25 th March to Tuesday 31st march. During
this time there will be no regular Year 11 and Year 12 classes. Students only come to school to do their exams. If
students come by bus then they may work in 2614 or the library during times when they do not have exams.
Students were given copies of their exam timetable on Wednesday 11th March. Copies are available in the Senior
Centre if another one is required. It is vital that students know when their exams are on. They must be at school,
ready to do the exam prior to the starting time for the session. Students are expected to be in full school uniform.
Students must bring all equipment required for their exams. For example, if a student has an exam that requires
the use of a calculator, then they must bring their own calculator. Lending or sharing of equipment during an
exam is forbidden. Students will need to bring their own lined paper to most exams.
Mid-Semester One Block Exams 2015
(Please encourage your students to follow these guidelines)
Ensure you are on-time for your exams. Session times indicate when you are expected to be ready to enter
the exam room with your equipment.
Students with exam clashes will be expected to complete the missed exam (Year 11 Physics and Year 12
Maths A P2 and Biology) in the next available session as per the exam timetable below.
It is essential that you complete your exam in the allocated time unless circumstances allowed for by QCAA
exist. If you are ill, notify the school before the exam commences. Please be sure to get a medical certificate.
If you need to make alternative arrangements for a valid reason, please see Mr Beanland ASAP.

Claire Kelly Wins Young Women in Public Affairs Award
Five Mackay North students attended the Zonta Club of Mackay
International Women’s Day function at the MECC on Sunday 8 th
March. The function included a live simulcast from the Sydney
Opera House of a panel discussion hosted by Geraldine
Doogue. The panel guests were Kate Bolick, Clementine Ford,
Roxane Gay, Germaine Greer, Celeste Liddle, Tara Moss and
Anita Sarkeesian. The discussion entitled ‘How to be a
Feminist’, covered many topics including aged care, gaming,
online harassment, collaborative thinking/individualism and
culture and class politics. Students were also fortunate to have
the opportunity to listen to Kathleen O’Dea whose book
‘Marshmallow Fishes’ details
her life in Zimbabwe and her
activism in opposition to
Robert Mugabe’s regime.
NORTH STUDENTS WITH SPONSOR, DENISE LINDLEY
Our own senior student, Claire Kelly, who was the winner of the Young Women in Public
Affairs award, also spoke on the day. Claire was awarded the ‘Young Women in Public
Affairs’ award for commitment to leadership in public policy, government and volunteer
organisations. She fought off some stiff competition from other schools this year but her
community service and volunteer work made her a stand out.
During the function, our students collected donations for safe birthing kits to be sent to
women overseas. The event was thought-provoking and entertaining and our students
were very fortunate to have their attendance sponsored by Denise Lindley of Re-Align
Chiropractic.

20th National Schools Constitutional Convention Delegate
from North High
Mackay North State High School student Lauren Williams is one of 120 Year 11 and 12 students selected to investigate the
need for an Australian Bill of Rights at the 20th National Schools Constitutional Convention, being held at Old Parliament
House in Canberra from 24 - 26 March 2015.
The National Schools Constitutional Convention program provides senior students with an opportunity to become better
informed about how Australia's constitution provides a democratic framework and encourages them to take an active
interest in the operation of government. The topic of the 2015 Convention is ‘Checks and balances: do we need an
Australian Bill of Rights?’ Discussion at the Convention will include a focus on the 800th anniversary of the Magna Carta.
Facilitated by Emeritus Professor John Warhurst AO, Professor of Political Science at the Australian National University,
the students will explore the need for Australia to have a Bill of Rights. This will include input from a panel of experts,
group discussions on the issues and the opportunity to persuade other delegates of particular
approaches. Students will participate in a mock plebiscite to determine the outcome of their
deliberations.
The Convention is funded by the Australian Government Department of Education and Training as
part of its ongoing commitment to civics and citizenship education.
In becoming a national delegate, Lauren Williams was selected from around 4,000 students from
government, independent and Catholic schools, most of whom took part in feeder conventions in
their home state or territory. Congratulations, Lauren.
Note: The 2015 National Schools Constitutional Convention is supported by funding from the Australian
Government Department of Education and Training. The views expressed at the Convention will not necessarily represent the views of
the Australian Government Department of Education and Training.
WAVE
Wellbeing * Academia * Values * Education
At Mackay North State High School, we are committed to teaching our students the skills they need to reach their full
potential. WAVE is a program that has been designed for students to focus on the skills and knowledge necessary to be
respectful, resilient and confident members of school and the wider community.
WAVE is implemented through 2 x 70 minute lessons per week, focusing on four facets: supporting students’ wellbeing, reflecting on academic success, understanding values and the significance of education.
The topics delivered within the WAVE program are developed around specific focus areas relevant to each year level.
It has been a busy start to the WAVE year and these last two weeks have seen the celebration of International Women’s
Day. A guest speaker delivered a thoughtful presentation and discussions were held around the topics of values,
expectations and respect.
Year 7s have been developing their literacy skills and exploring styles of test questions. A focus has been how to
approach these to maximise success and minimise stress. These will be valuable skills as the Year 7s enter a period of
exams and assessment.
Equity versus Equality has been a topic explored within the Year 8 WAVE program. This has aligned with the
International Women’s Day Celebrations and has explored our key values of respect, resilience and confidence.
The year 9s have been working on a program Literacy for Life, working on skills that will be valuable across all areas of
study. Stress Management has also been explored, a particularly relevant topic considering the upcoming assessment
period.
Beyond Blue has provided a program which our Year 10 students have been involved in. Last week the focus was
Decreasing Stress through physical education which saw the students exploring meditation and mindfulness activities
and participating in Tai Chi on the terraces. A very worthy experience which led to many smiling faces.
The Year 11 and 12 students received talks on blood donation with reference to being valuable members of a wider
community. Both groups are currently working in tutorial groups which allows them to work with teachers in specific
subject areas developing and working on assessment pieces. The Year 11 cohort has also been exploring Time
Management skills, something that should help them survive the rigors of senior schooling. The year 12s, in addition to
their tutorials have explored what it means to be a responsible Digital Citizen.
Wow, what a busy fortnight with many more to come. Many exciting presenters and guest speakers have been booked
for the year and I am looking forward to working closely with the Year Level Coordinators to further develop this valuable
program.

AirStream Racing at Nationals (Update)
In Melbourne on Thursday – the first day of judging –- after registration, car scrutinising, and "Pit
Display" (booth) assembly on Wednesday, the boys fronted the judges as the competition started in earnest.
Firstly they were judged on their "Pit Display" where they presented and explained to a panel of industry experts
their marketing strategy and use of graphic techniques in the design of their booth. Later in the day they were
judged on their "Verbal Presentations" where they explained to a different judging panel their team goals, and
told the story of the development of their car design and their personal growth and experiences over the 2 years
involvement in F1in Schools. Judges will also view their 40 page Portfolio which documents their journey and
explains their various collaborative partnerships with business such as Expert Laser Solutions, Central Graphics
and Signs, Southern Cross Ausstereo, Simon National Transport and many more.
The boys will also get a chance to size up their competition, checking out the Pit Displays and marketing
materials of the other 32 school teams from around Australia who have also won the right to represent their
States at this National Final.
The Airstream team would like to thank all of their sponsors, teachers, fellow students and friends who have
supported them in this competition and particularly those who have liked them on their Facebook page. It means

PERFORMING ARTS NEWS
MARCHING BAND TRIP TO THE STATE ANZAC
PARADE
It is very pleasing to see that the Marching Band trip to
the State Anzac Parade is completely full with an
extensive waiting list. With over ninety students
travelling to Brisbane, we will be by far the largest
marching band in the parade and the only school band
outside Brisbane to be invited.
Rehearsals for the band’s new members began in
Week 4 and have been extremely productive – the
students have acquitted themselves very well indeed. Band
members are reminded that Friday, March 20 is a FULL
marching band rehearsal for the whole 150 students in
the band and concludes at 4.30pm. There are three more
mandatory rehearsals for Brisbane (until 4.30pm):
Friday, March 27; Monday, April 20 (the FIRST day back
after the Easter holidays) and Tuesday, April 21.
KMEIA CHORAL FESTIVAL
The vocal group’s first performance for the year is at the
KMEIA Choral Festival which is being held at the MECC on
Monday, March 23. This is always a very popular event.
This year the two renowned guest choral conductors who are
working with the primary and community choirs are Paul
Jarman and Anthony Young.
On the Monday concert night, our male students will need to
be at the MECC at 5.15pm and our female students at
5.30pm for final rehearsals. The concert begins at 7.30pm
and should be finished by 9.00pm. Tickets for the public are
available at the MECC for $25.00 ($12.00 concession) –
reminder that these always sell out very quickly!
Our vocal group students will also need to be at Mercy
College on the Sunday afternoon before the concert
(Sunday, March 22) for the important concert rehearsals. All
male chorus students will need to arrive at 2.00pm for their
special rehearsal and the rest of the vocal group need to
arrive at 3.45pm. The rehearsal will finish at 6.30pm.
Students should wear comfortable, smart casual clothes and
bring WATER with them to the rehearsals.
Full cultural uniform is needed for the night
concert. If you need to purchase a second hand
cultural uniform, please contact me on 49631686 to
make an appointment.
VOCAL GROUP WORKSHOP
We have been offered an extremely valuable
opportunity for our vocal group members from Years 7 –
11 to participate in a workshop with Anthony Young on
MONDAY, March 23 from 1.00 – 3.00pm. Mr Young
is one of the visiting conductors for the KMEIA Choral
Festival and is a nationally renowned choral director. The
workshop is free and will be held in the music room here at
school. Members of the vocal group have all been given a
letter about the workshop and if they wish to participate, they
need to return the signed permission form to the music
staffroom by Tuesday, March 17.
ROCK POP MIME
This year the annual Rock Pop Mime Competition will be
held at the Lagoons Amphitheatre on Saturday night, July
25. Auditions were held last week for the school’s two groups
and our new dance teacher, Mr Ashley Fergus, was
extremely impressed with the enthusiasm of the students and
their level of talent. Competition for the places was fierce! A
big congratulations to all students who were selected as
members of the two groups to represent our school. Intensive
rehearsals have already begun.
Sincere thanks to Mr Fergus who is co-ordinating our school
entries this year, and also to Ms Tina Ryan who is kindly
assisting him.
MARCHING BAND POLO SHIRTS
Students who need a polo shirt for Brisbane should have
ordered their shirts by Friday, March 13. If not, please
contact Uniform Solutions immediately. We have been
advised that these shirts will be available for collection on
April 17.

IF…
Your student is late to school :
 a prior phone call or note is required from
you
 the student must present to Junior or Senior
Hub and will be given a Late Pass.
Your student is absent:
 a phone call to the absentee line or note is
required. An SMS message will be sent to
parents of students with unauthorised
absences.
Your student has an appointment:
 A note is required to the Junior or Senior
Hub for a Leave Request to leave class.
When the student leaves class they return to
the Jnr/Snr Hub and will be issued with a
Leave Pass to leave the school. If they
return to school they present to the Snr/Jnr
Hub for a Returning to School slip.
Your student becomes sick whilst at
school:
 They MUST present to either the Senior or
Junior Hub and the staff will contact you. If
your child rings you to say they are sick,
please tell them they must report to the
respective Hub. The staff there will contact
you to arrange for them to go home, issue
them with a Leave Pass and keep an eye on
them until they are collected.
 Reminder – Students contacting home
themselves can cause a great deal of
concern for staff. Students who do so
will be referred to the Deputy Principal
overseeing their year level.

The second half of the session will look at a DVD presented by Paul Stanley and a member of the QPS, where we look at a clip of a
teenager’s party and the issues that can arise for the young people and the parents (based on actual events - very eye opening to any
parent)
