Mumbai and the Vanishing Kipot
The Indo-Jewish Coalition, a joint body
of the American Jewish Committee and the
Indian community in Atlanta is dedicated
to deepening bonds between Jews and
Indians in Israel, India and the United
States. With 40,000 Israelis visiting India

each year, the fabric, food, music and Hindu
mysticism of India is brought back to Israel, and celebrated in a
festival called Boombamela. But in addition to the cultural,
educational and spiritual values that bind Indians and Jews is the
shared experience of Islamic terrorism, as demonstrated by the
recent events in Mumbai.
India and Israel both gained independence from the British
Empire within a year of the other. Although privately, Indian
political leaders and openly, the Hindu community expressed
support for Israel, India resisted formal diplomatic ties with Israel
until 1992, following the Arab-Israeli peace talks in Madrid, the
collapse of the USSR, and military escalation with Pakistan. With
mutual concerns about Islamic fundamentalism in the Middle East
and the Indian sub-continent, Israel and India have since developed
close defense and security ties, with Israel becoming, alternately
with Russia, India’s largest arms supplier. Ironically, reports
Newsweek International, “Israel’s training of Indian forces in its
defense specialty, counterterrorism, seems to have been limited.”
Still, Israeli counter-terror experts criticized the Indian special
forces’ response to the attacks in Mumbai, among whose victims
were six Jews and Israelis. Whether to show solidarity, or due to
arms relationship, the controversy seems to have disappeared.
Efraim Inbar, director of Israel’s Begin-Sadat Center for Strategic
Studies remarked that the Indian forces’ less aggressive approach
than their Israeli counterparts could explain the lack of response by
Indian officials to Israel’s offer of counter-terror expertise.
Regardless, the cooperative effort between India and Israel in the
response to terrorism is apt to be enhanced.
In 2007, New Delhi hosted the world’s first Jewish-Hindu
interfaith leadership summit. Participants included Hindu
organizations in India, Jewish organizations in Israel and the
American Jewish Committee. The chief Rabbi of Israel, Yona
Metzger and Swami Dayanand Saraswati stated, “The Jewish and
Hindu communities are committed to the ancient traditions of

Mumbai and the Vanishing Kipot, continued
Judaism and Hindu dharma respectively, and have both, in their
own ways, gone through the painful experiences of persecution,
oppression and destruction.” Metzger added, “For thousands of
years we have marched on parallel causes and have now built
bridges of cooperation between the two religions. Jews have lived
in India for over 2000 years and have never been discriminated
against. This is something unparalleled in human history.”
But due to aliyah, India’s permanent community of Jews has
dwindled from about 40,000 in 1940 to approximately 5,000.
These Jews, living in the Mumbai region, are thought to have
roots in the Bene Israel community, descending from seven
Jewish families, shipwrecked on India’s Konkan coast, fleeing
persecution in the Galilee during the second century B.C.E.
Two other sects, the Cochini, in the southern state of Kerala,
derive from Majorca, Spain and the 200 Baghdadis, also living
in Mumbai, are from West Asia. All three groups, adopting
Indian language, dress and cuisine, played a role in the
development of business, international trade and construction
in various coastal cities in India. The most prominent influence
has been that of the Bene Israel Jews, who hold positions in
government and in Bollywood.
Prior to the terrorist attack in Mumbai, a Jew could feel safe
wearing a kipah on the streets of Mumbai, said a Jewish,
Indian old-timer to a reporter. Another Indian Jew said,
“We always felt we were Indians first, and Jews second.” But
following the siege at Nariman House, that has changed. A
Jewish educator remarked that Indian Jews need to reassess the
security of their institutions. Ruth Krishna, a Mumbai Jew and
former hospital administrator told a BBC News reporter, “There
is a feeling that community members could be under threat.”
Although none of the Jews killed in the attack were Indian
citizens, Jonathan Solomon, a Mumbai lawyer and president of
the Indian-Jewish Federation told Jeremy Kahn, reporter for the
International Herald Tribune, “This is the first time a Jew has
been targeted in India because he is a Jew…the tradition of the
last thousand years has been breached.” In fact, said Ezekial
Isaac Malekar, a leader of the Jewish community in New Delhi,
“This is one of the few countries where Jews never faced
discrimination and persecution.”
Indian Jews are now considering seeking formal recognition
as a minority group which would require the Indian government
to protect Jews from persecution.
Prior to the massacre, the Baghdadi and Bene Israel Jews
were divided. Because most Mumbai Jews are much less
observant than the ultra-Orthodox Lubavitchers, the Bene Israel
had limited interaction with Rabbi Holtzberg and Chabad
House, whose focus was to serve Orthodox visitors from abroad
and Israeli travelers. Now, however, there is a feeling that the
Jewish community will come closer together.

SOCIAL ACTION
Another Successful Thanksgiving Food Drive
The focus for this year’s annual Thanksgiving Day Basket
Drive held in conjunction with JFS and their Hand Up Youth
Food Pantry was once again homebound seniors. With deep
concern that our local elderly grandmas and grandpas might go
hungry during these difficult economic times in the minds and
hearts of many Temple Solel members, the drive was an
overwhelming success! We donated over 75 baskets to the
pantry with complete Thanksgiving dinners, supplemented
with turkeys provided by JFS. Many of these baskets were
ornate, others were simple; some were packaged in reusable,
environmentally correct cloth bags, others were in practical
laundry baskets or wicker containers. The mood was infectious
as the baskets were gathered during Sunday Religious school
sessions. Many families, who were unaware of the drive,
returned to Temple Solel with donations purchased from
neighborhood stores. In addition to the edible donations, the
pre-schoolers hand traced turkeys, and drew lovely pictures
which were included in each basket and helped brighten the
holidays for our seniors. There were many creative additions to
the baskets this year including magazines, blankets, slippers,
and holiday towels and decorations. Other great contributors
included our Havurot Community, which created the most
beautiful and ornate baskets. We surpassed our goals and our
previous record for donated baskets. JFS has thanked us as the
“premier donator to this program.” Once again, the families of
Temple Solel have brightened the lives of those less fortunate.
Special thanks to Risé Edney and Ed Beimel for organizing
this event.
“Yes we
A Mitzvah for all Ages
“Yes we CAN”
Now, more than ever, low-income working families and
fixed-income senior citizens need our help. The San Diego
Food Banks rely on contributions from our local
community to fight hunger in San Diego County, and to
provide a safety net to people who are struggling to put
food on the table.
How “can” we help? Bring a “canned” item every time
you come to Temple Solel, including Shabbat. Donation
containers will be available at all times by the front gate,
outside the sanctuary and the coffee shop. Every donation
helps us make sure no one goes to bed hungry.
Hineynu Needs Our Help!
Hineynu is looking for additional volunteers for our newest
project, “Hineynu Callers.” This is a perfect opportunity for
those who have limited volunteer time available. As a weekly
caller, you can become a phone friend and reassure an ill or
shut-in congregant that they are still part of our caring
community.
Please join us at the Hineynu Callers training session with
Rabbi Brown on Thursday evening, January 8, 2009 at
7:00pm in
the Coffee House.
If you know of anyone who would appreciate getting a weekly
phone call, please let us know.
If you have any questions, or would like to RSVP for this
training session, please email Ina Rubenstein at
[email protected] or Karin Bensusen at [email protected].
Social Action chair Elyse Matson and Risé Edney are appreciative of all the
food basket donations.

Havdalah Nights
Social Group Formed!
Got issues?
Get involved!
Next Event: February 14, 2009
Last summer, when several in our Havurah were voicing
opinions on Temple topics (What—Jews kvetching ??),
someone suggested we try to find a positive way to solve
problems instead of just complain. The result was that the
members of Havurah Yehudit took the lead in developing a
first program (see article at left, “Havdalah Nights — Social
Group Formed”) as well as setting up a second event (Feb 14)
and trying to get others involved. Many thanks to Phyllis and
Sigmund Penn, Marcia Kern and Marty Stern, Jane and Stan
Schatt, Simone and Jay Mager, Ellen and Norm Cypers,
Sheree Sobel, Bette Ross, and Gail and Marc Covitt for
working together to start this process.
Our hope is that others will try to become more involved
in Temple activities. Whether you are new to the Temple, or
have been members for a very long time, many of us seek to
be more connected to our community. And if there is
something that needs action, then consider taking an active
part in the solution. When our Havurah decided to plan an
event and restart the social group, Temple staff was very
helpful in making this happen. The process and the outcome
seemed to work well for everyone.
Clearly there are financially challenging times ahead, not
only locally but throughout the country and around the world.
But if you can contribute your time and energy, that is also
valuable in building and sustaining programs. To paraphrase
President Kennedy’s 1961 inauguration speech, ASK NOT
WHAT YOUR TEMPLE CAN DO FOR YOU --- ASK
WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR YOUR TEMPLE.
Call the Temple office and ask to help!
— Marc Covitt
The name “Havdalah Nights” is the new name for the “Empty
Nesters.” If you are 45-75, Temple Solel single or couple and
interested in connecting with other Temple members, join us for a
fun evening at our next event, a catered dinner at Temple Solel on
February 14 at 7:00 p.m.
November 1st marked the first successful “Havdalah Nights.”
Approximately 65 people attended the event at Temple Solel
which was planned and led by Havurah Yedudit*. The evening was
a wine and cheese social, including Havdalah led by Ellen Fox
followed by a series of “moderated speed meetings.” Everyone got
to meet, share, listen and connect with many new people, and the
feedback was overwhelmingly positive.
While some attendees were already in Havurot, others wanted
to form new ones. As a result of the November event, there are
new Havurot being organized. It is clear that people are looking
for ways to connect with the Temple community and we are happy
to help.
We are also looking for others who would like to assist with
future events. If you are part of a Havurah, consider having your
Havurah take on the planning for an event. Some possible trips
and other activities are under consideration.
Please plan to come to a delicious dinner at Temple Solel on
February 14 and meet old and new friends. Socializing and
connecting with others as part of fun events is why this group
was formed.
A flyer with detailed information will be in the mail early
January. Reservations and payment for the February 14 event are
due by February 8.
HINEYNU
Hineynu Attends Southern California Caring Community Networking Meeting
On November 9, 2008, Jayne Marx and Connie Robin,
members of our Hineynu Steering Committee participated in a
networking meeting of Southern Reform Congregation Caring
Communities. The meeting included representatives of seven
synagogues, as well as Rabbi Linda Bertenthal, Senior Associate
Director of the Pacific Southwest Council of the URJ. The
purpose of the meeting was to share information and discuss
how each congregation was proceeding in its development of
their Caring Communities. Topics included Health and
Wellness, Death and Dying, Disability Inclusion, Addiction
and Recovery and the current Economic Downturn. Each
congregation shared how it currently supports its members as
well as what goals they have for the future. Participants were
encouraged to attend the upcoming Pacific Southwest Regional
Biennial February 6-8, 2009 being held in Costa Mesa. Many
Caring Community sessions will be offered. We are happy to
say that Temple Solel is highly respected and admired for our
progress in developing our Hineynu Commuity.

PRESCHOOL HAPPENINGS
by Cathy Goldberg, ECC Director
Each day I am blessed with the
opportunity to visit Temple Solel’s Early
Childhood classrooms. I receive such joy
seeing all the creativity that is flowing
like honey from the children. I hear their
laughter, I can see the hands-on learning
that is taking place in the classrooms,
and I know that we are creating skills
and memories that will stay with them
for a lifetime.
During the months of November and
December I enjoyed tasting all of the
delicious foods which were prepared by
the children and their teachers. More
importantly, I had the privilege of
watching their love for Judaism grow as
we prepared for Chanukah. I wish to
thank all of our ECC teachers for
helping the children to learn Hebrew and
English songs, make adorable props, and
create fun costumes for our spectacular
Chanukah program. It was truly an
amazing show and enjoyed by all.
The children and parents have had
the opportunity to participate in three
different mitzvah projects. Generously,
they have provided Thanksgiving meals
to home bound seniors, provided gifts
for needy families, and supplied toiletry
items for the interfaith shelter.
In Jewish early childhood centers, we
want our children to feel safe, to develop
positive self-images, to love learning, and
grow to be happy and productive adults.
One of the ways we share Judaism with
young children is by creating a preschool
curriculum based on the Jewish calendar.
Our year began with Rosh Hashanah,
marched through Simchat Torah, lit up
at Chanukah, and will blossom into
Tu B’Shavat.
The Holiday of Tu B’Shevat, the
New Year of the trees, is right around
the corner. Tu B’Shevat dates back to the
Talmud. The Rabbis considered the new
year of trees as beginning when the new
fruit begins to form. On the 15th day of
the Hebrew month of Shevat, this year
on February 9th, children all over Israel
will be planting trees.
Planting a tree in Israel is a
wonderful way to honor someone or pay
tribute to someone’s memory. It is a
tradition at the ECC on Tu B’Shevat to
taste new fruits, especially fruits native to
Israel, such as almonds, figs, carob, and
dates.
Tu B’Shevat is a reminder to us that
it is our responsibility to care for the
earth. Children will love finding ways to
recycle and save energy at home.
Help your child to observe
Tu B’Shevat at home by planting seeds.
Nothing grows faster, or is more
rewarding to a child with a limited ability
to delay gratification, than birdseed on
top of a sponge in a pan of water. You
can also plant parsley now and use it at
your Passover Seder, how fun to eat food
that you have grown yourself.
Encourage your child to join you in
the garden or on a nature walk. It is
a wonderful way to slow down our fast
paced lives and see your young child’s
eyes light up with wonder and awe
at the beauty of the nature that
surrounds them.

Happy New Year
from the preschool parent committee!
We wanted to let our preschool
community know how busy the committee
has been this fall from
parties to shopping to performances!
We held our first PJ & Pizza Party in
October and had about 25 families attend.
The kids had a blast making
fruit loop necklaces in their PJ’s and eating
pizza. Thank you to parents
Anne Solomon, Cami Greenberg,
Susan Brooks, Kori Clark, and Julie Glazer
for helping with the event.
The preschool had THREE mitzvah
projects this fall. Thank you to Jennifer
Stackle, Stacy Simon, and Stacy Renert for
organizing the Thanksgiving Basket Drive.
Our efforts provided seven full
Thanksgiving meals to homebound seniors.
We also donated holiday gifts to the Jewish
Family Services “Embrace a Family”
project. Thank you to all the families who
generously donated so
these families could have a joyous holiday.
Our final mitzvah project was
to help provide toiletries for the Interfaith
Shelter which Temple Solel hosted over the
winter break.
The annual Holiday Boutique
Fundraiser was held on December 3, 2008.
There was everything you could want from
jewelry, purses, to jeans and more! All of
the proceeds from this event go directly to
the preschool to fund some fantastic
activities and programs. Thank you to
Kelley Berman for all her hard work
organizing the event, and a big thanks also

SCHOOL NEWS
Talking About God
Dear Parents:
Last week, a parent called me and asked how we teach
about God in the Religious School. She inquired because she
and her daughter (who is in the school) do not believe in God.
I asked her to explain to me her conception and then we each
shared ideas about what God is or isn’t. We came to the
conclusion that, before deciding whether or not we believe in
God, we need to define our ideas about God. She realized that,
if she and her daughter defined God differently, they may
believe in God after all (or maybe not!!) We realized that
maybe it is all about the words we use to describe God that are
key to the discussion.
The teachers and I spend a lot of time discussing God with
our students. Most of that time (on the teacher’s part) is spent
listening. That is because there are very few absolute facts that
we can teach our children about God. Our job is to open the
dialogue. Our job is to listen and to give the children ideas
about God that have been presented by Jewish scholars.
Children want to talk about God. Their sense of wonder and
awe is great. Their feelings about the world and how it works
are deep. They need a safe place to share their thoughts and
feelings about God. That safe place is what we try to provide
here at the Temple Solel School. We do not pretend to have all
the answers, but we do feel comfortable to engage with the
students as we all struggle together with our ideas about God.
We do know what questions to ask to begin the dialogue. And
that is our goal — to encourage dialogue.
Everyone struggles with the idea of God, even if they say
they do not believe in God. No one really knows what God is.
Jewish scholars throughout the ages have had many different
ways of thinking and writing about God. About the only
things that all Jews (who do believe in God) agree upon are
that God is One, God is not a person, and that God is
invisible — everything else is up for grabs. Our ideas about
God change as we grow and mature.
There are some beliefs about God which we present to the
students — not as answers or absolute truths, but as suggestions
for the students to think about. We do not tell the students
that they have to believe in these ideas about God. We say that
these are some beliefs they may want to think about as they
proceed through their lives. These beliefs include:
– God is reflected in the beauty of nature and humanity.
– God is an unseen yet omnipresent Force in the world.
– God is Creator of the universe.
– People are co-partners with God in the creation of a
better world.
– God grants people free will. We are responsible for
our actions.
– Some people believe that God does not cause
everything that happens in the world. Some things are
the result of sheer accident and others are caused by
people exercising their freedom in a harmful way.
– God is not a physical thing or being. God is intangible.
God has no form.
– God is a Power that makes things possible (such as
the growth of a flower, the healing of a bruise).
– God does not punish people. People suffer as a result
of their actions or the actions of others, but natural laws
operate without making moral judgments.
– God provides resources of strength and faith for the
victims of misfortune and resources of compassion for those
around them, so that together they can go on living and
building a life, in spite of what life brings them.
Our hope, as teachers at the Temple School, is that the
students feel safe to struggle with their beliefs about God when
they are in our classrooms. We want to provide many different
ways to think about God so that students will have a collection
of ideas upon which to draw as they grow older. We do not
have the answers, but we enjoy talking about the many ways to
think about God with our students!!

Preschool Parent Committee, continued
goes out to the parents who helped on the
day of the event and to all who patronized
the event and supported
our vendors.
We would like to thank Becky Baird and
the Hanukkah committee for their hard
work organizing the children’s Hanukkah
Performance. And thanks also
to Tahlia Essman for donating her
photographic talents and Daniel Baird for
graphics and multimedia. The teachers and
children worked very hard to put on a
fabulous show, we hope you enjoyed
watching them on stage!
You can see that we have had a very busy
year so far and there is much more fun to
come! We need parent volunteers to make
our events and projects successful. All are
welcome to attend the parent committee
meetings which are held the first Monday
and Tuesday of each month in the coffee
house right after drop off. We welcome
your ideas and have volunteer opportunities
for everyone. For more information contact

MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE NEWS
Announcing the Ambassador Program
The Membership Committee is pleased to announce its new
Ambassador Program.
The Ambassador Program is designed to assist members and
families with integrating into our temple community by pairing
them with an Ambassador, or mentor, who can share their
experiences and knowledge about Temple Solel.
We are a thriving congregation of over 850 families with a
very active service, program and event schedule. There are so
many opportunities for spiritual, educational and social
enrichment that members and families who are relatively new to
the synagogue, or even those who have been members for
several years, may not know where to start or to whom they
should turn when they have questions.
The Ambassador Program joins veteran temple members
with individuals or families to help them get more from their
temple membership. The ambassadors can share experiences at
our synagogue with their paired member or family by attending
Shabbat services and special events at the temple with them, or
perhaps they can enjoy a meal together and just talk about all of
the wonderful happenings at our temple. Each Ambassador will
be a useful resource to members or families who would like to
become better acquainted with their temple community.
If you would like to learn more about the Ambassador
Program, or to find out about becoming an Ambassador or to
request to be paired with an Ambassador, please contact
Membership Chair Kelley Berman at (760) 685-2848 or
[email protected].
What is a Reform Zionist?
ARZA (pronounced AHR-tzah) is a pretty clever name. It’s a
Hebrew word meaning “toward the Land (of Israel),” and it’s
also an acronym for the “Association of Reform Zionists of
America.” ARZA is the national membership organization that
connects Reform Jews with Israel. But what does the name
mean? What is a Reform Zionist? Is it simply a Zionist who
happens to be a Reform Jew but who otherwise is kind of like
any other Zionist? Or is there something uniquely Reform
about our Zionism? And while we’re at it, what’s a Zionist?
A Zionist is a proponent of Zionism, a movement founded in
the late 19th century to create a Jewish homeland in the land of
Israel, then known as Palestine. But that goal of Zionism was
fulfilled in May, 1948, with the declaration of Israel’s
independence. Since then, most people understand Zionism as a
movement that supports Israel and works to make Israel the
best, most ideal Jewish state it can be. Reform Zionism is
Zionism infused with the values and principles cherished by
Reform Judaism, including religious equality for women and
men, a commitment to tikkun olam (literally “world repair,” i.e.,
social justice), the creation by individuals of meaningful Jewish
lives through informed choice, and so on. Some of those
characteristics are shared by other forms of Zionism while
others are unique to Reform Zionism.
But within these fairly vague parameters, Reform Zionist
thinkers don’t actually agree completely on the details of Reform
Zionism. You can get a sense for the range of views by looking
at “An Open Conversation About Reform Zionism” (go to
www.reformzionism.net), a project initiated by ARZA in the
spring of 2008. The website allows you to add your views about
what being a Reform Zionist means. So give it some thought,
and join the conversation!
