Kerry and its magnificent landscape and archaeological sites provide a unique environment for production of these iconic blockbusters… ‘‘Rising improbably from the Atlantic, one of the highlights of Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way, Skellig Michael’’ Star Wars: Episode 7 The Force Awakens and Star Wars: Episode 8 In a galaxy far, far away… In 2014 the villages of Portmagee and Waterville played host to JJ Abrams May the Force be with you… Two years later and Star Wars is caught in the snare that is the beauty and diversity of the landscape in Kerry. The Department for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht approved filming on the Dingle Peninsula for a limited time in late May this year. The Department’s National Parks and Wildlife Service, having examined the proposal in detail, is satisfied that filming will not adversely affect the integrity of the SPA, nor have an adverse impact on biodiversity. Permission for filming has been granted subject to strict conditions. A Departmental habitats expert will be present during the shoot. Meanwhile, landowners in CeannSibeal have already signed agreements for filming the Hollywood blockbuster – while hotels and selfcatering accommodation in the area have been booked up for crew.‘Star 1 ‘‘The Department’s National Parks and Wildlife Service, having examined the proposal in detail, is satisfied’’ and his film crew as they shot scenes on Skellig Michael that propelled this UNESCO World Heritage Site onto the international film world. Rising improbably from the Atlantic, one of the highlights of Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way, Skellig Michael, has attracted both admirers and those seeking solitude for centuries. It was on this jagged rock that 6th century monks carved hundreds of stone steps to the summit, where they established an isolated monastery. The awe inspiring view of Skellig Michael in the Star Wars Episode 7 The Force Awakens has impacted on tourism in this area of Kerry with thousands expected to flock to the region to get a glimpse of the iconic rock or perhaps be one of the lucky ones to catch a boat to experience the mysticism of the location in person. 5 Wars 8’ is being directed by Rian Johnson (‘Looper’) and sees actors Daisy Ridley, Carrie Fisher, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver and Mark Hamill return along with new additions Benicio Del Toro and Laura Dern. Irish actor Domhnall Gleeson is also returning as the villainous General Hux. 01 Due for release in 2017 01 Skellig Michael 01 6 Go Kerry Newsletter Issue 1 Go Kerry Newsletter Issue 1 Our Blue Flag Beaches are: 02 Ballybunion North: Ballybunion North Beach is located within walking distance of the town of Ballybunion in County Kerry. Inch Beach ‘‘It’s no wonder that Kerry has received 13 Blue Flags Beaches’’ 10 Go Kerry Newsletter Issue 1 Go Kerry Newsletter Issue 1 11 1 03 Exceptional Distinguished Quality of Starry Skies DARK SKY RESERVE What is a Dark Sky Reserve? This is often a combination of public and private land with “exceptional or distinguished” quality of starry skies. ‘‘You can see the band of the Milky Way, the Andromeda Galaxy, Star Clusters and Nebula’s and so much more than you ever imagined’’ It is formed through a partnership of land owners and administrators who commit to protecting the visibility of the night skies with regulation, formal agreement and long-term planning. It consists of a “core area” and a peripheral area that also supports the protection Kerry International Dark Sky Reserve of the dark sky. Over 1.5 million tourists pass through the Ring of Kerry and the rise in astrotourism will encourage visitors to stay longer and provide an incentive to visit the area in the Winter period. Kerry Dark Sky Reserve in the Kerry International Dark-Sky Reserve you will see many more stars than are shown on the usual sky maps, so many in fact, that many seasoned astronomers are taken aback, and at first delightfully struggle to look for the even more familiar constellations. Without the aid of any astronomical equipment or filters you can see the beautiful band of the Milky Way, the Andromeda Galaxy, Star Clusters and Nebula’s and so much more than you ever imagined. The Kerry Dark Skies Reserve covers approximately 700km and includes most of the Iveragh Peninsula including Kells, Cahersiveen, Valentia Island, Portmagee, Caherdaniel and Ballinskelligs. Kerry Dark Sky Reserve received its official Gold Standard status in January 2014 from the International Dark Sky Association. This is the first Gold Tier reserve in the Northern Hemisphere. So we invite you to go Satellite watching, moon gazing, planet hunting, or simply glory in the wonder of ‘falling stars’ … discover Kerry’s DARK side and you’ll experience the wonder of the heavens as our ancestors once did. 12 Go Kerry Newsletter Issue 1 Go Kerry Newsletter Issue 1 some sense of place and provenance, what winemakers might call the gout de terroir. Vodka ‘‘Our scale is modest, our approach to what we make is essentially artisan’’ Dingle Distillery Vodka is all about purity. DDV is most unusual in being quintuple distilled. That fifth distillation makes a huge difference. You can taste it in the incredible purity that is as pure as the environment where we make it. There’s just a touch of sweetness and creamy texture that takes a lot of people by surprise. It is exceptionally good drunk neat. Enjoy the tour and sample the product. 04 Killarney Brewing Company Distilleries & Brewing The founding partners of Killarney Brewing Company have restored the old Killarney Mineral Water drinks facility to its former glory; it is now one of Ireland’s most exciting new craft breweries and tap rooms. All of our craft beer is additive and preservative free and is produced in small batches in Killarney. We use only the finest quality ingredients during the brewing process, thus ensuring a premium quality, consistent, and exceptional flavour profile throughout. Everyone loves a great story, and we think we have plenty of memorable ones that tie in perfectly to our brand name. We named our range of beers after local myths and legends, and we have plenty to choose from! Great tasting beer needs great Our members in GoKerry include the Dingle Whiskey Distillery and the Killarney Brewing Company. Each of these initiatives are brought to the market by passionate innovators who use local produce to create a unique product that has inspired others to emulate them. Each of these companies offers a guided tour of their premises which includes a tasting. The Dingle Whiskey Distillery The Dingle Whiskey Distillery is not in the business of creating megabrands, nor do we distil for anyone else. Our scale is modest, our approach to what we make is essentially artisan and we have rekindled the tradition of independent distilling in Ireland. Some of the products produces here are: Check out some of these during your tour and sampling: War Horse: Irish Pale Ale, Casey Brothers: ExtraStout, Devils Helles: Lager, Scarlet Pimpernel: IPA, Golden Spear: Gold Ale, Rutting Deer: Red Ale. Whiskey Our very special stills are a key part of the Dingle Story. We take the best Irish malted barley and make pure pot still malt whiskey. Then we put it in casks and let the mild, moist, unique Dingle air do the rest. No whiskey in Scotland or Ireland experiences a maturation process like that. Dingle is definitely Dingle. Gin At present there are only two gins made in Ireland and one of these is the hand-crafted, artisan Dingle Original Gin.We use, amongst other botanicals, rowan berry from the mountain ash trees, fuchsia, bog myrtle, hawthorn and heather for a taste of the Kerry landscape. It’s a formula unknown elsewhere and is calculated, amongst other things, to create 1 water and all of our hand crafted beers are brewed using the purest natural water originating from atop Mangerton Mountain – the home of the legendary Devil’s Punch Bowl. This spring flows over thousands of feet of Killarney mountain rock before emptying into the glacial lake, Lough Guitane, allowing our artisan brews to embrace the finest elements nature can provide. Companies in GoKerry Over the past number of years there has been a rise in the number of home grown whiskies and craft beers available in Kerry. 13 04 14 05 Kerry’s wild natural beauty and its links with Irish Mythology. The many myths and legends of Ireland form the basis of early Irish history and the structure of Gaelic society. Yet unlike much Celtic mythology, the mythology of Ireland, its legends, its folklore and mythical figures, have stood the test of time informing elements of Irish culture throughout its history. Land of the Fianna indeed. Carrauntoohill is steeped in mythical folklore and ancient place names that hint at a colourful history in pre-Christian 06 Go Kerry Newsletter Issue 1 Go Kerry Newsletter Issue 1 Ireland. The peak Caher is said to be named after an ancient watch tower which once stood on this mighty peak, during the time of the Fianna. From here warriors would stand guard over West Kerry and see approaching attackers far away. The Ballaghisheen Drive is a stunning 1.5 hour (60km) route from Killarney to Waterville through the centre of the Iveragh Peninsula to some of the most remote and scenic parts of county Kerry. But most spectacularly it will bring you along the route taken by Oisin on his return from Tir na Og. A sight you will see for yourself as you explore these hidden gems. new trail measures 2.5km. Council has been completed with the opening of the Glenbeigh to Rossbeigh “Off the Road” walk. The road from Glenbeigh to the beach can be very busy and this trail offers a superb and safe way to discover the delights of the wooded hill walk between the town and the strand. This walk is highly recommended for those of you who are looking to get a good workout as there are a few high areas along the way but this adds to the trails attraction. The trail measures 1 THE KERRY GREENWAY Unique & Spectacular Cycling/Walking routes in Europe. Cycling/Walking routes near Glenbeigh - Cahersiveen “Off the Road” walk to Rossbeigh Another big community project for Glenbeigh Community 07 15 2.5km and takes around 25 – 40 minutes depending on fitness and there are seats placed along the route that are handy for a rest. The views of Rossbeigh are beyond awe inspiring and the fresh sea breeze will certainly clear your head. Walking boots are highly recommended. ‘‘Cycling tourism is big business globally and we have seen the positive impact that the Mayo greenway has had on the local economy’’ THE Kerry Greenway, when developed will be one of the most unique and visually spectacular cycling/walking routes in Europe. The route will go through Glenbeigh as far as Cahersiveen and Valentia Island. The trail follows the old route of the Farranfore to Valentia Harbour railway line, which has been described as one of the world’s most spectacular train journeys taking in the viaduct at Gleensk and numerous tunnels and bridges as it wound its way to South Kerry. The views of Dingle Bay, Inch and Rossbeigh Beaches and The Blasket Islands on the Mountain Stage section of the line near Glenbeigh seen through a light morning mist must have been incredible. Today there is still a mystical beauty to the views on this section of the Ring of Kerry. The railway line operated from 1893 until 1960 when it was closed because of the decline in rural population and the introduction of the motor car. Funding to develop the first phase of the South Kerry Greenway project has been secured and aims to redevelop the old railway line from Glenbeigh to Cahersiveen as a cycle route. A section of this line also forms part of the Kerry Way National Waymarked Trail at the beginning of Mountain Stage near Glenbeigh. Speaking about investment Win Greenways Minister Alan Kelly remarked: “A €10 million investment programme demonstrates the commitment of Government to cycling infrastructure and greenway development. Cycling tourism is big business globally and we have seen the positive impact that the Mayo greenway has had on the local economy. It stimulates economic activity, much of which is in rural areas. Ireland is swiftly becoming a cycling nation and we are promoting this strongly as a Government.” The impact of this Greenway, when developed, on the tourism potential for Kerry could be far in excess of that achieved by the Mayo Greenway. 16 Go Kerry Newsletter Issue 1 Go Kerry Newsletter Issue 1 SPECIAL OFFERS!
