Friday Headliners - Sacramento Music Festival
Friday Headliners The James Hunter Six 10:30pm Firehouse Lot It’s like the 60s never stopped when you hear the gruff and gorgeous sounds of British Soul man, James Hunter. Discovered by Van Morrison, Hunter emerged as a Soul powerhouse in 2006 with People Gonna Talk, which hit #1 on the Billboard Blues chart, was Grammy-nommed and landed on year-end lists from Mojo to USA Today. His next album, The Hard Way, was another Billboard Blues #1, and Paste said it “re-renders the art of musical seduction even more convincingly than Hunter’s mentor Van Morrison,” while the New York Times praised Hunter’s “tight slithery groove” and “sweet growl.” The new album, Minute By Minute is just out to huge international acclaim. With double saxes, double bass and Hammond B, The James Hunter Six will shake your tailfeather. Ben Taylor 8:00pm Turntable on the Green A self-described “late bloomer” musically, Ben Taylor didn’t start singing until his early 20s. The hesitation is understandable, given the daunting example of success set by his parents, James Taylor and Carly Simon. While Ben thought of other vocations he could pursue, he was drawn to the family business. Ben had a true affinity for music, and not surprisingly, a love for words. He once described his work as “organically handcrafted songs,” and he has been a successful eclectic independent artist for the past ten years. Listening, out on Sun Pedal Recordings/ILG, is Ben’s first album in four years. The album was co-produced by Ben and his long time musicians: drummer Larry Ciancia, bass player Ben Thomas, and guitarist David Saw, who also co-writes most of the music. Now that he is with a label, he wants to focus his attention on songwriting and throw himself deeper into music. Terry Hanck 5:00pm Turntable on the Green 8:30pm Firehouse Lot This four-time national Blues Music Awards nominee and Delta Groove recording artist is a premier tenor sax master blaster! As a saxophonist, singer, bandleader, and songwriter, Hanck leads his hard-sockin’ Soul and Blues band though a world of classic New Orleans R&B, steamy strolls, gorgeous Soul ballads and West Coast Jump Blues. Joseph Jordan writes “His fiery reed work, beautiful tone and effortless, inventive melodies make for thoroughly enjoyable listening....his voice is a marvel. He can make it growl, ache, croon, moan and tease, and then some. It is a superb instrument in its own right.” sacmusicfest.com | sacramento music festival 2013 25 Saturday Headliners The Blasters 9:30pm Turntable on the Green The Blasters, led by brothers Dave and Phil Alvin, burst out of the L.A. Punk and Rock scene in the late 1970s, a visceral pushback against the uber-produced, soul-less music dominating the airwaves of the time. With their self-described “American Music” and one debut album in 1980, they almost single-handedly created the genre “Americana”—a mixture of Folk, Rockabilly, Blues, Country, Cajun, and Punk Rock and Mountain music. The brothers’ first-hand experience with Blues masters shaped their sound and turned them into contemporary singer/songwriters whose interest in roots-Rock has never waned. In 2012 Phil Alvin, Bill Bateman, John Bazz and Keith Wyatt released Fun On Saturday Night, a full fledged return to the “classic Blasters sound” in both style and song selection. It is a propulsive mix of rocking R&B, Chicago Blues and Country/Hillbilly played as only the Blasters can which, in the words of Bob Dylan, “was magic!” Wanda Jackson 6:30pm Turntable on the Green Wanda Jackson was halfway through high school in 1954 when Country singer Hank Thompson heard her on the radio and asked her to record with his band. By the end of the decade, Jackson had become one of America’s first major female Country and Rockabilly singers. Wanda has had an illustrious career performing with everyone from Elvis Presley to Jack White of the White Stripes. She had hits with Fujiyama Mama in 1958, Right or Wrong in 1961, appearing on the Country music top 20 throughout the 60s. She continues recording and has been embraced by a new generation of artists including Elvis Costello, Dave Alvin and Rosie Flores. In 2009 Wanda was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame. In 2012 she released her 31st album, Unfinished Business, produced by Justin Townes Earle featuring original material and songs by Woody Guthrie, Etta James, Bobby Womack, and others. John Lee Hooker, Jr. 3:30pm Turntable on the Green 5:00pm Turntable on the Green John Lee Hooker, Jr. was exposed to the Blues by his father, Blues legend John Lee Hooker. Hooker Jr. performed on WJBK radio at the age of 8 and toured with his father through his teen years. He has shared stages with Blues greats Jimmie Reed, Lenny Kravitz, Buddy Guy, BB King, ZZ Top, Taj Mahal and, of course, John Lee Hooker. He is a two-time Grammy nominee, Blues Awards winner, California Music Award winner, and Gold Album recipient for his European release, That’s What the Blues is All About. His USA release All Hooked Up features Soul diva Betty Wright and guitarist Lucky Peterson. In the title track, All Hooked Up, he gives thanks to Almighty God for hooking him up to a life free of drugs and alcohol. From San Quentin to the Red Carpet in Hollywood, today Hooker, Jr. is “All Hooked Up.” 26 sacmusicfest.com | sacramento music festival 2013 Sunday Headliners Los Lobos 9:00pm Turntable on the Green Los Lobos released Just Another Band from East L.A over 30 years ago. Since then they have evolved into music legends. They started out playing Rock ‘n’ Roll, then heard some old Mexican music records and “we were off and running.” They built an audience within L.A.’s Punk and roots-Rock world. Opening for The Blasters at the Whisky A-Go-Go in 1982 was a breakthrough. In 1987, Los Lobos was asked to remake Richie Valen’s hit La Bamba. It made number one and let them reach a larger audience around the world, opening for bands like U2 and the Clash. But rather than capitalize on La Bamba, Los Lobos recorded La Pistola y El Corazón, paying tribute to their Mexican music roots. In 1992 they released Kiko, one of the best albums of their career. They have had many highly regarded albums, collaborations, side band projects, and records for kids including Los Lobos Goes Disney. Their latest album is Tin Can Trust. Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks 7:00pm Turntable on the Green “Dan Hicks is fly, sly, wily and dry” -Tom Waits The sartorically-inclined music legend, whom Elvis Costello calls “an American treasure, plows deep furrows in the landscape of American music.” “Dan Hicks is still delivering the goods, wrapped in his own unique saddle blanket of Gypsy Jazz woven with Western Swing with threads of Blues, bacon grease, and Bebop tying it all together. Listening to Tangled Tales (2009) is like watching an R. Crumb cartoon character walk a tight rope. There’s a quirky gonzo humor on the surface, but the music behind it is fiercely tight with no room for error. Listen to the syncopated stops and starts or the rhythm change-ups; take in the multi-layered harmonies or the too-cool instrumental breaks; take a deep breath and try to follow those crazilycomped chords or high-speed scats - there’s nothing simple about this stuff, folks.” - Jambase.com Photo: Laura Martin sacmusicfest.com | sacramento music festival 2013 27 Featured Band BiosBands & Schedules The Beer Dawgs (Sacramento, CA) In their 27 year career, The Beer Dawgs have played literally thousands of shows around Northern California and the United States. They have won three SAMMIE awards and, along with Mumbo Gumbo, were the first entrants into the Sacramento Music Hall of Fame in 1995. The Dawgs have played the festival many times and are very excited to be back! Expect to hear swampy, Bluesey, funky kind of Country originals all thrown together into a happy stew! The folks in Saint Louis checked around to find the best musicians in their area and stuck them together in one hot, loud, exciting group. No wonder they’ve had a meteoric rise in popularity and are now one of the top festival bands in the U.S. They play everything from the music of the early 1900s to contemporary Jump, Jazz and Swing, plus some original material. The nine piece band, lead by charismatic Hamish McGregor, is a throwback to days you’re probably too young to remember, but too much of a romantic not to idealize. Each member of the band has a long history with our organization and they have served the STJS in many ways as musicians and as board members. Dutch was President in the early years and has never wavered in his support. Early this year he was in our office to discuss his band’s (Gramercy 6) schedule for this year’s festival. As it frequently happens when “old timers” get together, the question was raised if we had ever had our own STJS All Star band. We didn’t think so. “Why not?” we both wondered. We decided to just go for it! Dutch went to work and here they are—one of the most exciting grouping of All Stars ever! In 2007 he formed Daymark Production with Wes Payne that produced entertainment for nine vessels of Majestic American Line for two seasons. Daymark Productions continues to provide show production services for the cruise industry. When not traveling to Europe, Turkey, Malaysia and annually to Japan, Tom can be found performing nightly in New Orleans. Brady McKay is a versatile and entertaining Jazz vocalist, producing 11 CDs and four solo projects. She has contributed as producer or vocalist on several other artist’s projects. Brady also directs the children’s theater group “The Arden Players.” These two performers are festival favorites and their performance together this year will surely “knock your socks off!” FRI 3:30pm Golden Eagle Room FRI 9:30pm Hyatt Ballroom SAT 12:30pm Riverfront Refuge SAT 3:30pm Courtyard D’Oro SAT 6:30pm Delta King Paddlewheel Saloon w/Igor Glenn SUN11:30am Holiday Inn Ballroom SUN 5:30pm Embassy Suites SUN10:00pm Sheraton Ballroom MON11:30am Embassy Suites MON 2:30pm Delta King Paddlewheel Saloon Tom Rigney & Flambeau (Berkeley, CA) Tom Rigney, the fiery violinist/composer, joins forces with some of the finest San Francisco roots musicians to form Tom Rigney and Flambeau, a band that probably has a lock on a spot at our festival for as long as they want it!
