Read about Bonfire Night in Britain.
Bonfire Night is a British festival. It is on November 5th, in the autumn.
When it’s dark, many people have bonfires and fireworks in their gardens.
Some people go to big firework displays in parks. It is traditional to burn
a figure of a man on the bonfire. He is called a ‘guy’ to remember a bad
man in the history of England called Guy Fawkes.

Answer the questions about the Gunpowder
Plot.
Guy Fawkes and a group of men are
putting gunpowder in the cellar of the
Houses of Parliament. Their plan is to blow
up Parliament and kill the King of England
and all his men.
On the morning of November 5th, the
king’s soldiers enter the cellar and arrest
Guy Fawkes before he can light the
gunpowder. The king tells his soldiers to
torture Guy Fawkes and then execute him.

On November 5th, we always have a bonfire and fireworks in
the garden, and we burn a guy. We make our guy with old
clothes and newspapers. Then we put him on the bonfire.
When it gets dark, my dad lights the bonfire and then the
fireworks. Roman candles are good but I like rockets
best. After the fireworks, we cook potatoes in the fire.

Valentine’s Day in Britain
Valentine’s Day is on February 14th. St Valentine is the patron
saint of love. In the UK and the USA, it is a very commercial
celebration. People send romantic cards to boys and girls
they like - but they don’t sign their names. You have to guess
who the card is from. There are often little love poems inside
the cards. Older people have romantic dinners and give each
other presents. The traditional symbols for Valentine’s Day are
hearts and roses.

WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY * 5 JUNE
People celebrate World Environment Day (WE Day) on
June 5th. Every year there is a different ‘Host Country’. The
aim of WE Day is to make people aware of some of the
problems the world is facing. It reminds us how we pollute
our air, rivers and seas, and endanger wildlife by destroying
its habitat. WE Day is important because it shows what
ordinary people can do to make the world a better place.

At my school in Angola, we celebrate World Environment
Day with Plant a Tree Day. Six months before WE
Day we go to the forest and collect seeds from
many trees. We plant the seeds in little pots in the
school garden. Things grow very quickly in my country
because it’s very hot and it rains a lot. Soon we
have a lot of little trees. On WE Day we go to the
forest with our teachers and plant the new trees
in the forest. We often see wild animals and birds.
I like the Colobus monkeys best!
