Further to the implementation the ADATH’s strategic plan, the Congregation has made the decision to restructure the
office. As such, Winnie Citrome, a long-standing and valued employee, who has been with the ADATH for the past 17
years, has decided that it is time for her to leave, to pursue new and exciting opportunities. We are grateful to Winnie for
her dedicated and devoted years of service. She has always done an excellent job, and her presence will be missed
Chazzan Shmuel Levin will be leaving the ADATH to pursue other interests in the Rabbinic and educational fields. We are
grateful to the Chazzan for his contributions to the ADATH over the past 4 years, and ability to connect with members of
our Shul through his love of music and study.

What freedom is

Joseph's brothers cast Joseph into the pit.
Travelling merchants pick him up
and bring him down to Egypt
and sell him into slavery there.
That is the story
of how Joseph becomes Egypt's first Israelite slave.
Falling into the pit
is the last Joseph sees of his brothers,
of his father’s house,
for twenty years.
Then twenty years go by
and Israel follows Joseph into Egypt
and settles in Egypt
and later becomes a slave-people there.
When God frees the people from Egypt, God says:
On the night that freedom comes,
eat Passover meals
household by household.

Family is the interwovenness of people
but Joseph enters slavery all alone,
a lone item to be sold or owned.
Perhaps to say: Family is the interwovenness of people
but slaves are lone commodities.
So slavery and family are opposites.
Thus a break in a family brings slavery
and when slavery ends,
families eat together:
family comes back.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Dear Friends,
Since becoming President 18 months ago, I have been
privileged to be part of a transformational time in the
ADATH’s history. Over the winter months, we continued
our strategy to challenge everything – from our People,
our Processes, and our Programs. We have done this not
because it was easy, but because it was instrumental to
the future vibrancy of our Shul.
And I have seen first hand, the unwavering dedication of
our Clergy, Officers, Office Staff, Executive/Board, Team
Sisterhood, and all the countless volunteers. Thanks to
them, and your support – the ADATH is strong, and
continues to be a beacon of Modern Orthodoxy within
the Community.

We hope you agree that the ADATH has delivered on it’s
goals to you - The Fall 2015 High Holidays were
inspirational and meaningful. The “One Shabbat”
program brought together hundreds from across the
Community for Friday night dinner and Shabbat Services.
Our Annual Raffle & Gala was amazing. Our annual
Super Bowl & Community Purim parties were our best
attended. We hosted special events including a Tu
b’Shvat Seder, and an Art Vernissage. Rabbi Whitman
has many regular weekly lectures – both at the ADATH
and across the Community. Rabbi Alex’s Shabbat Youth
Group has grown in popularity, and we have hosted
wonderful ‘Welcoming Shabbats’.
On behalf of my wife Carole, our children Max, Riva and
Jake, we wish you and your family a Chag Pessach

Team Sisterhood continues to be an instrumental part of
the ADATH – from taking responsibility for large events
like our Raffle & Gala … to the many ongoing exciting
programs offered by the ‘Team’, we are truly grateful for
all that they do.
As you read this newsletter, many of you have been
touched by the ADATH in some way over the past year –
through Simcha or hardship. Our Rabbis work tirelessly
to provide support and guidance, and we are grateful to
them.
On behalf of the Executive and Board, we thank all those
who support our Shul and our programs. Through your
ongoing financial commitment to support the shul, you
are ensuring that our work in the Community can

Firstly, I would like to thank all those who have helped
out during the recent winter months with our morning
services, as well as our Minchah and Maariv services,
over the past 10 winters. I must say, I don't remember
our minyans going as smoothly as this past winter!

TEAM SISTERHOOD MESSAGE
I am so pleased to present the new look for TEAM
Sisterhood at the ADATH. This age of media has
introduced us to a whole new vocabulary. Our world is
shaped by visual aids, instant recognition, marketing
tactics, branding, promotion, push tactics, pop-ups,
logos, lingo, tweets, pokes and posts!
This new TEAM Sisterhood at the ADATH logo is more
than just a new logo. It represents so much about TEAM
Sisterhood in general. This started out as just an idea,
but like most things at TEAM Sisterhood, the idea took
flight. Our own Batia Ora set to work to design and
develop a look and a message that would say it all.
And this is exactly what TEAM Sisterhood is. Through all
of our programs and projects, activities and events,
TEAM Sisterhood has come to exhibit all the essential
qualities of a successful TEAM. We work together, we
learn, we play, we participate, all together.
TEAM Sisterhood is built on participation and
cooperation. Be it to set up our social hall to receive 350
Gala guests or to help prepare a Shabbat to Share for
250, we make lists, we divide the work and we set out to
make the ADATH events successful and memorable.
TEAM Sisterhood is a group of energetic, motivated and
dedicated women, from our much respected and
experienced members who have been part of the
sisterhood at the ADATH for many years, to the new
faces who continually sign up for new and exciting
programs and activities, to our very youngest members
who you will often see joining the ladies for a hand or
two of Mah Jongg on a Shabbat afternoon!

Special Children’s Program, As We End Passover - Saturday evening, April 30
On Saturday evening, April 30, we will hold a special program for all children, and their parents and grandparents, in the
closing hours of Pesach. After Minchah, which will begin at 7:30 p.m., all children are invited to deliver a Dvar Torah that
they have prepared.
Children can prepare this Dvar Torah by themselves, with their parents, or with Rabbi Whitman in the days and weeks
before. Each child who participates will be duly recognized, with prizes and refreshments for all.
Come celebrate the beauty of our children and their accomplishments as a fitting climax to the Festival of Pesach.

PROGRAMS, CLASSES, AND EVENTS
Morning & Evening Daf Yomi
Daf Yomi (Page a Day Talmud Study) is the schedule of studying a page of Talmud a day. All over the world, thousands of
Jews each day study the same page of Talmud, thus connecting them in their pursuit of Torah knowledge. The Talmud is
the main repository of Jewish learning and, using the Daf Yomi cycle, can be completed in about seven and a half years.
This is a great opportunity to delve into the heart of Jewish learning, and get your day started with intellectual and
spiritual vigor. No previous knowledge is necessary and you can attend every day or once in a while. We offer Daf Yomi
every morning and evening. Please see our weekly newsletter for exact times.
Shabbat Youth Groups
Our Shabbat youth groups meet every Shabbat morning starting at 10 a.m. This is one of the most popular and successful
programs at the ADATH. We encourage all children to participate.
Expanded Shabbat Youth Groups
In addition to our ongoing Shabbat youth groups, we now have a popular, creative, and exciting program led by Rabbi
Alex, every Shabbat morning starting at about 10:30 a.m. Each week we choose a theme and feature related stories,
games, and healthy refreshments. Everyone is welcome!
Weekly Talmud Class
The Talmud is the main repository of classical Jewish learning. Each week, we may touch on issues of history, philosophy,
law, rituals, ethics, spirituality, and much more. Join us each Shabbat afternoon 45 minutes before Minchah. Taught by
Rabbi Alex Zwiebel. Please see our weekly newsletter for exact times. All men and women are invited.
Team Sisterhood Yoga
Yoga for women at the ADATH continues every Monday, at 7:00 p.m. SHARP! Join us for an inspirational Yoga practice,
complete with soothing music by candlelight!

Friday Night Young Adult Tish

JACS
JACS (Jewish alcoholics, chemically dependent persons, and significant others) is a unique blending of Jewish tradition and
12-step recovery philosophy. JACS meets at the ADATH on the fourth Tuesday (usually) of each month. Call Rabbi
Whitman for more information.
Karate
We offer weekly classes in traditional Karate at the ADATH, with separate classes for men and for women. For further
information, call Audra in our office.
TEAM Sisterhood Book Club
Every 6 weeks or so, in a warm and casual setting, we get together to discuss a wonderful novel we've just read. It's fun
and relaxed and friendly. Our next book is set in Israel, and is by Amos Oz, called "A Tale of Love and Darkness". Please see
our weekly newsletter for more information. All women are welcome – please join us!
YOUR BAT MITZVAH AT THE ADATH
If you have not yet had a Bat Mitzvah celebration, you are invited to join a remarkable group of women, of all ages and
backgrounds, to celebrate your Bat Mitzvah at the ADATH on Shabbat, June 11, 2016.
In preparation for this milestone, we will study together the Book of Ruth, in depth, uncovering lessons for today about
commitment to Torah and Israel, and celebrating women’s leadership in our community. We will provide guided study
with questions and discussions through email and Facebook, so you can participate wherever you are and whenever you
are able.
After Passover, we will begin meeting regularly to more deeply understand the responsibilities and opportunities of Bat
Mitzvah, and to prepare for your special day. Each woman will also work on a unique project (such as a Dvar Torah, a work
of art, or other project to be discussed) that she will present. And on Shabbat morning, June 11, you and your
accomplishments will be celebrated by our entire community.
This opportunity is open to all women. There is no cost to join other than a commitment to participate to the best of your
ability, and a willingness to grow as a Jewish woman. Please tell Rabbi Whitman ([email protected]) of your interest and you
will be invited to the next event.
HALACHIC PRENUP FOR CANADA
For many years I have had the heavy privilege to work on behalf of Agunot - Jewish women (and a few men) in failed
marriages unable to achieve a Get (Jewish bill of divorce) because their spouse refuses to cooperate. I see, firsthand, the
nightmare of pain, anxiety, and loss of control they experience at the hands of their abusive spouse. I am haunted that
after 120 years in this world, I (and every other rabbi) will be called to account for not doing enough to prevent and relieve
this pain. Here is my most important contribution to this effort.
It is now widely accepted that the most practical and helpful method to prevent this is for every couple, before they are
married, to sign a Halachic prenup agreement, where the couple pledges that if their marriage does fail, God forbid, they
will cooperate with a Get, and not refuse for any reason. Experts have written that such an agreement, correctly used, can
prevent virtually all cases of Agunah.
I am proud to announce I have written a new Halachic Prenup for Canada that is now ready for use. You can find the
document with its explanation and instructions on our website, www.adath.ca.
This document is the result of a years-long consultation with a wide group of renowned rabbis and legal experts including
law professors, retired judges, and lawyers in both Montreal and Toronto. The result is a document based on the writing of
Rabbi Moshe Feinstein, the greatest Halachic authority of our time. It represents our best judgement of the strongest
Halachic prenup possible in Canada that meets the highest standards of Canadian and Jewish law.
I urge every Jewish couple getting married in Canada to sign this agreement. And I urge every Rabbi in Canada to insist on
this as I and many other revered Rabbis already do, because I am convinced this is the best way to prevent the nightmare
of Agunah. If you or someone you know is getting married, please tell them about this and urge them to do it.
Please contact me for more information, or questions about any aspect of this. I am also willing to facilitate the signing of
this agreement for any Jewish couple at no charge.

Michael Birnbaum - Shabbat, August 20, 2016
Michael graduated from Solomon Schechter Academy in June 2015. In grade 6 Michael and his team
won 1st prize in the annual Quebec math teacher association competition. He had a perfect score on
his exam and we are very proud of his accomplishments. He currently attends Herzliah High School
where is very well appreciated by the staff and student body.
Michael is the oldest of three siblings and is a responsible and caring older brother. He excels
academically but manages to have a balanced life. In his spare time he enjoys reading and spending
time with his friends and family. He enjoys many sports, like basketball, skating, swimming and tennis,
but his favorite sport has been karate since the age of 6. Michael has a strong sense of Jewish identity
for which we are grateful and he always encourages us to donate to the many school fund raising
activities. Michael's parents, his entire family and friends are looking forward to sharing his Simcha on August 20, 2016. His
adoring grandfather Armand Gabay, Z'L, will be missed very much.

One of the most enduring traditions of Judaism is honouring our families. The Torah calls us to honour our families during
their lives and to remember them when they are no longer with us.
Our Sisterhood is once again planning to publish a “Book of Remembrance 5777” to be used for Yizkor Services during
Yom Kippur, as well as during all other Yizkor Services throughout the year. Recalling the memories of our loved ones is
both an act of solemn piety and an expression of profound respect.
In this memorial publication, you will have the opportunity of honouring the memories of your loved ones. Please enter

SALE OF CHOMETZ - 5776
Not only may we not eat Chometz on Pesach, it may not even be in our possession during the Holiday. The most simple solution
is to eat or give away any Chometz you may have as Pesach approaches. I will be happy to take any food you have and give it to
the non-Jewish needy. That which we find during the ‘Bedikas Chometz’ (Search for Chometz), we burn before Pesach. If you
wish to keep certain Chometz items for after Pesach, it is possible to do so by selling them to a non-Jew for the week of Pesach.
You may contact Assistant Rabbi Alex Zwiebel to act as your agent to arrange this sale for you. When you do so, it is important
to remember that you are selling your Chometz for that week - it does not belong to you and the non-Jew to whom it is sold has
the right to come and take it (and pay you for it). All sold items should be put in an area that can be closed off, taped shut, and
clearly labeled ‘sold.’
With the sale of the Chometz, you are also leasing to the non-Jew the property on which the Chometz sits. Therefore, you have
to tell Rabbi Alex where the Chometz is located.
You must arrange for the sale of your Chometz no later than 6:00 PM, Thursday, April 21, 2016. Preferably, you should contact
Rabbi Alex in person with the form below filled out. However, if you are unable to do so, you may fill out the form below and
send it to the ADATH office (but confirm we have received it by Thursday, April 21, 2016) by mail (223 Harrow Cr. Hampstead, QC

OUTREACH TO SENIORS
Rabbi Whitman and Rabbi Alex and his kids visit seniors regularly at their homes and residences. We have now initiated a new programme of outreach where the Rabbis and the kids of the ADATH who wish to join them go to senior residences to visit our elders before the holidays and bring them good cheer. This was done with greet success at the VISTA Residence this past Chanukah! Accompanied by an accomplished 90 year old pianist, the Rabbis and a whole gang of ADATH kids led a packed audience of seniors in a freilich sing‐a‐long of Chanukah songs. The evening was absolutely delightful and everyone left raving about the ADATH, its Rabbis and adorable kids. This is a wonderful form of outreach by the ADATH, our members and particularly our children who are taught the powerful mitzvah of honouring and respecting our elders.
