Gradient Wind Engineering Inc. (GWE) was retained by Valecraft Homes Ltd. to undertake a roadway
traffic noise study of a proposed townhome development at 1880 Trim Road in Ottawa, Ontario. As part
of GWE’s Transportation Noise Assessment report dated October 7, 2016, one 2.2 m and two 2.4 m tall
noise barriers were proposed for various blocks/units on site. In order to provide access and egress to and
from the outdoor living areas, GWE has investigated the effects of adding an opening for a gate to each
of the flanking noise barrier segments.
GWE’s investigation concluded that, assuming a gate width of no more than 1.4 m directly adjacent to the
dwellings (see Figure 1), the outdoor living areas remain well protected from roadway traffic noise
sources, due to the overlap of the barrier and building structures. Because there is no direct exposure to
roadway traffic noise sources as a result of the openings, prior noise calculations and therefore outdoor
living area noise levels, will remain unchanged.
