President’s
Report
by Tom Elum
VNEA Rolls On.
It seems as if summer has just
started, and here we are in August
and ready to start our Fall/Winter
VNEA Season. I hope you all had
an enjoyable Summer... or what was
called Summer.
We at VNEA are preparing for another
record breaking year and planning
our International Championships as
well as helping our Charters prepare
for the upcoming season.
This Summer we had our League
SMART Educational Conference in
St. Louis, Missouri. It was held with
the NDA and was very well attended.
A lot of good ideas were discussed
on how to make League play more
enjoyable.
If every member brings in one friend
to play VNEA Leagues, you will have
one of the best or best leagues in the
system.
Thank you for being a VNEA
member and have a good year.

Junior Shooters Converge
On The Kellogg Arena For
The 24th Annual VNEA World
Junior Pool Championships
The Kellogg Arena • Battle Creek, Michigan
June 26-29, 2014
The Arena... 80 beautifully polished and neatly arranged
Valley Pool Tables filled the Kellogg Arena and greeted the
juniors as they walked in to the arena. A great concession
stand was available to keep the kids nourished as well as a
Happy’s Pizza Tent. Grindn’ Clothing was in attendance serving up our player clothing needs including our annual, event
t-shirt. Old Time Billiards also occupied a booth offering
every pool accessory the players would want and served as
the events cue repair service.
Ozone Billiards jumped on board as a Sponsor this season
and has been a welcomed addition to the VNEA Family. Joe
Muller was on hand to talk to the kids and share the many
benefits of Ozone and their involvement. Ozone graciously
donated every Gift Card that we awarded at our event. This
huge donation is greatly appreciated and we look forward to
continue our partnership with Ozone for many future events.
“Dr. Cue”Tom Rossman conducted Artistic Pool competitions (fun-filled Contests) non-stop throughout the weekend.
Hundreds of the juniors took part in the competition with
the top scores competing in the Finals for World Titles and
Framed Certificates.
Dave “The Ginger Wizard” Pearson was on hand throughout
the weekend conducting exciting and fast-paced Speed Pool
qualifiers (who can run a rack of 15 balls in the fastest time).
Dave’s goal was to crown Champions in each of the 3 Divisions and set up the “Battle of the Ages” in the E2P Challenge!
Jerry Briesath also brought his “Pool School” on the road to
Battle Creek and spent the weekend working with every
junior player that sought his advice. Jerry’s skill working oneon-one with his students is like nothing else in the business.
When you leave a session with Jerry, you can guarantee that
your game will improve!
Professional Live Streamer, Mike Warden, from TVMike.tv
was on hand for the weekend to “stream” nearly every match
played in The OZONE Finals Arena. Mike did an incredible job
commentating the matches and displayed great professionalism and knowledge about the VNEA.This was our first year
using Mike’s services, and we look forward to using him for
future events.
An informative Control Stage kept the players updated with
critical tournament information and was led by Junior
Tournament Director, Marshall Kohtz (VVS). Marshall’s staff
worked diligently to get through the enormous amount of
matches that were played throughout the weekend. The
CompuSport Software Program again worked flawlessly to allow our events to run like a well-oiled, machine. The Tournament Committee Staff consisted of the following...
Marshall Kohtz - Lincoln, NE
Bill Skrutsky - Erie, PA
Brian Elliott - Bay City, MI
Ed Borgia - Erie, PA
Kim Waldinger - Erie, PA
Gregg Elliott - Bay City, MI
Both Singles and Team competition for the weekend were
broken down into 3 divisions:
Youth - Ages 9-13; Minor - Ages 14-17; Major - Ages 18-20

singles had 40 entries. In total, 185 shooters would square-off
in a double elimination format that would lead to some great
shooting and refreshing sportsmanship.
Team Competition...
The 2014 event had 55, 3-player squads.These great numbers
represented 15 Charter Holders from an impressive 9 States,
Ontario, Canada and New Zealand. This made up for a total of

Geographic Representation...
States: Colorado, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, Ohio, Pennsylvania & South Dakota

Players Reception...
A fun tradition of the VNEA Junior event is the fun-filled Players Reception on Friday evening. Players get to take a break
from their hard-fought Singles matches and enjoy some Happy’s Pizza and Soda’s.Also, at this years event, Dave Pearson
put on an amazing show for those in attendance by attempting
a Guinness World Record of clearing 10 Racks of 15 balls in
less than 8 minutes and 57.1 seconds! After a few warm-up attempts, Dave got to the 9th rack in record time before missing
a couple of key shots and stopping the ever-so-close attempt.
A lot of fun to watch and a great try by The Ginger Wizard.
Top Cat Challenge...
At 8:00pm on Friday evening, the VNEA began a new tradition with the playing of the first ever All-Star Team “Top Cat”
Challenge! This event consisted of the winners and runnerup’s of the three male and three female Singles Divisions.
These twelve players would form (4), 3-player All-Star Teams
and would play for the title of Top Cat’s! This competition
was a real highlight of the tournament and the players all
enjoyed their well-earned time in the spotlight.

Team Opening Ceremonies...
At 8:30am on Saturday morning, the VNEA welcomed the
Teams with its annual Opening Ceremonies which includes
an impressive “Parade of Flags” featuring all of the states and
countries involved. As in years past, VNEA Director of Marketing & Promotions Brian Elliott welcomed the hundreds of
players and family members to the team tournament. Starting
by complimenting the Charter Holders and the junior players
themselves for making this year a special event. Brian also
thanked the junior teams for wearing terrific team uniforms
this year and applauded the players for their classy attire.
Elliott then continued the ceremony by recognizing the
2014 Singles Winners and presenting them with their welldeserved trophies. This years awards were incredible “Charlie
Cougar” acrylic statues that were, again, the hit of the weekend! As flash-bulbs lit up the arena floor, so did the player and
parent smiles and pride. Next, thirteen anxious youths participated as flag bearers in the annual “Ceremony of Flags” and
the U.S., Canadian and New Zealand anthems were proudly
played. This part of the ceremony is very important to the
players as they all take great pride in their state, province and
country. As many dignitaries were recognized and the days
schedule was read, you could feel the excitement in the room
for the Team competition that was about to unfold.
VNEA Juniors!
Guinness World Record Attempt
VNEA’s Dave Pearson gave an astounding
effort in an attempt to set a new 10 rack record
Prizes...
There was a total of 36 beautiful GW Cues that were given
away to the Top 4 places in the 3 divisions of team play. Dave
Pearson donated these great cues as well as 72 GW Cases!
Thank you so much, Dave. There were also 30 Cues and 30
Cases (compliments of Valley) that were given to the winners
and runner-up’s of the competitive mini-tournaments and
ever-popular Junior/Junior Scotch Doubles throughout the
weekend.
Miscellaneous...
Jon Maestry and Dean Street from High Country Promotions
did a terrific job with table set-up and tear-down as well as
daily maintenance. Junior Referees Jim “Woody”Woodside and
Nils McConnell ran a remarkably smooth tournament with
the help of Chris Talbot who did a great job.
Team Fun!
The VNEA has the greatest kids in the world!

FINDING THE “MISSING LINKS” TO YOUR GAME!
I can still vividly remember my first job as a “rack boy” at Elsie’s Pool Room
in Minonk, Ilinois. Seeing the beautiful rainbow colors of the pool balls as
they rolled over the green felt and hearing the gentle clicking sound of one
ball against another still remain a foundational “sight and sound” image of my
introduction to pool at the youthful age of ten. Elsie had a special connection
to the billiard venue with her magnetic smile and joyful spirit, but displayed
a disciplined control over those in the room that wanted to cause trouble or
present anything other than a positive and productive side to the games being
played. My early training experience helped me develop a “first love” for the
game of pool and would provide for me solid “roots of reference” for future
“game and life” experiences, as I learned how pool should be played and how
customers / players should be treated in the right way.
When I went to college I started to realize a “new side” to pool that was
counter to the principles Elsie had taught me. My exposure to back room
wagers being offered by some players needing a few extra dollars for gas,
food, or whatever seemed to pull me away from my “first love” for the game
and drain my joy for it in the process. After graduation I started playing in pro
events and my game skills grew, particularly in bank pool, my favorite game
at the time. One night in 1972 an individual asked me to play some “banks”. A
few hours later my wallet, but more importantly, my heart were broken – BIG
TIME! Something was definitely “missing” in my game and the “joy of the
roll” seemed lost.
At a recent tour stop, a player asked me a two-part question – “what was the
most money I ever won” and “what was the most money I ever lost”. I assumed he was not asking about tournament prize money, but rather “winning
and losing” in the back room. I quickly noted that I would answer the “losing”
question first, since it struck my spirit and thought process the deepest from
my 1972 unfortunate calamity with the “breaking of the heart” factor as noted
earlier.
I had a good job and could recover from the financial loss; however, my heart had felt a “hurt” for the game I loved that would remain forever a valued lesson for my billiard journey. At that moment I realized IF I could hurt that much “inside”, then I wondered how many others might have felt this “hurt” from my past challenges if I beat
them. I did not want to be the reason for that happening in the future, so I stopped this style of playing pool without any tint of withdrawal pains. In order to satisfy my
competitive urges, I followed the tournament trail and combined that with a love for show and / or teaching engagements in a tent-making career endeavor that remains to
present day.
I believe Elsie’s Pool Room provided a valuable “missing link” to the game for me! The “first love” I felt in that disciplined environment centered around the “sight and
sound” of the pool balls and the camaraderie shared by all that were blessed
to be there to experience the heartfelt beauty, promise, and vision of our
sport. No one got “hurt” and each game played became a special “game
and life” victory. A few years later I discovered the REAL “missing link” – a
spiritual perspective of stewardship over the game I loved. May each of you
realize / discover your “missing links” for truly “enjoying the roll” until next
time when…

What Is An Easy Shot?
By Jerry Briesath
I can’t tell you how many times people have asked me why they miss a so-called easy,
straight in shot on the eight ball. They put the cue ball a foot from the head rail and the
eight ball between the side pockets and it’s a straight in shot to the far corner. What they
don’t realize is that whenever there is a big distance between the cue ball and the object ball
and a big distance between the object ball and the pocket it is a very, very difficult shot. Just
because the shot is straight in does not mean it is an easy shot.
So how do we know what is an easy shot and what is a tough shot. Here are my standards for
an easy shot. If the cue ball and the object ball are on the same end of the table and the angle
is 45° or less, these are easy shots and you must make them all. Remember, missing one of
these shots gives your opponent a free trip to the table which can easily become a loss for you.
Please remember that very few games are won because your opponent made a very difficult
shot but rather most games are lost because you screwed up on an easy shot. Whenever you
miss a shot as I described above be sure to practice that shot until you’re comfortable you
can make it every time.
Good Luck - Jerry

2014 VNEA “Hall of Famers”
When the 2014 “Charlie’s” had all found a home, it was time
to “kick it up a notch” with some serious partying and the
rock & roll sounds of the band “The Deal”.This popular, high
energy band rocked the lot well into the night entertaining
the crowd with their flashy, Vegas style show.
The Team competition kicked off Tuesday morning right on
schedule. Nearly 600 teams participated in the Team events
at this 34th Annual Championships.
The “Hardluck Competition” also had some great play for
teams that were unfortunately knocked out in the early rounds
of the Tournament. First place winners were as follows:

3rd Annual “World Team Championships”.
For the third year in a row, the VNEA conducted the fun
and exciting World Team Championships! Countries
put together one, four-person team to represent their flag.
USA, Australia, Finland, New Zealand, Spain, Thailand,
Bermuda, Canada and Germany all formed teams for a
chance to win the coveted “World Cup”Trophy. When the
dust cleared, it came down to Australia and Germany in the
finals with TEAM AUSTRALIA capturing the “World Cup” title.
Congratulations to all of the teams that participated in this
fun-filled and exciting event.
VNEA President’s Reception.
Charter Holders and Special Dignitaries were invited to the
annual President’s Reception earlier in the week in honor of
VNEA President Tom Elum from Massillon, Ohio.
An entertaining pianist from a nearby “Dualing Piano’s” Bar
played in one of Bally’s scenic “Sky Rooms” during the events
popular Cocktail Hour. His music served as a relaxing backdrop for the evening.
The VNEA also made available four tables stocked full of
VNEA “Silent Auction” items. The guests love purchasing these
unique treasures and the VNEA Junior Program loves the generous donation. Thanks to everyone who participated.
Lifetime Sanction Cards were presented to three VNEA
long time contributors. The cards exemplify a lifetime of
commitment to the VNEA and were issued to Dave Everett
(M & G Service - OH), Scott Morgan (Aactive Coin - Manitoba) and Jim Powell (VNEA - Michigan). Congratulations to
these deserving individuals.
Also highlighted at the reception was the presentation of the
2014 Warren Kelley Meritorious Service Award. In
memory of Warren Kelley, a great believer in the VNEA, this
is the highest award given by the VNEA. Accepting the award
at this years ceremony was long-time VNEA supporter Dave
Hawkins from D & R Star in Austin, Minnesota. Congratulations, Dave.
The President’s Choice Award, presented by current
VNEA President Tom Elum, was awarded to longtime VNEA
Charter Holder, Mark Anderson, from Cheyenne Vending in
Cheyenne, Wyoming.Tom honored his longtime VNEA Boothmate for his dedication to the VNEA. Congratulations Mark
and thank you for your many contributions.
Professional Pool Instructor Mr. Jerry Briesath was on
hand throughout the week to give instruction and answer
questions. Briesath, taking his Pool School on the road, is
always a crowd favorite as he teaches his techniques in a
very intimate setting which makes him very understandable
and in tune with the players. Jerry’s area was a popular spot
throughout the tournament week.

8-Ball News & Views
Tom “Dr. Cue” Rossman brought his Artistic Pool show
to the big VNEA show. The Doctors fast-paced, energy filled
shows always draws a crowd as he grips you with his highly
skilled pool artistry and witty lingo. The 20th Annual VNEA
International Artistic Pool Championship created quite a
stir as hundreds of entries from around the world embraced
the idea of the Dr. Cue Classic Artistic Pool Tour with its low
entry fees, guaranteed prize fund, and an opportunity to
become part of a much bigger picture for this growing sport.
Players have long expressed a desire to take their passion for
“Artistic Pool” to the next level and beyond. In this regard,
a new format was designed by the Doctor... a simple LAG
CONTEST. By simplifying the contest, everyone in the tournament could take a shot at the title and have a great chance of
winning. When the final playoffs were done, we had winners
in Shootout #1 (during Singles) and Shootout #2 (during
Teams). Congratulations are in order for all players that “took
the Artistic Pool Challenge”.Those players capturing titles
were as follows:
Discount Custom Leather, GW Collection, J & J America,
Meucci, Omega Billiards, Ozone Billiards, Palmer Cues,
Shaft Master Lathes, Speed Break Contest and The Drill Instructor. Brian also spontaneously showered the guests with
hundreds of dollars of casino chips throughout the evening.
Gregg Elliott, VNEA Executive Director, took to the stage to
thank and recognize the incredible Bally’s Staff for the
amazing job that they continue to do, year after year, for our
annual event.
Sponsoring this years championships was: Valley, Aramith,
GW Cues and Ozone Billiards
On top of everything that the sponsors do for the tournament, nothing is more rewarding for the players than the
Daily Raffles that take place on 6 different occasions. Beautiful
ARAMITH Ball Sets & Case and Poolside Cabana’s were all
raffled off to our tournament participants.
Shootout #1:
1st - Steve Portelance (Calgary, Alberta) - $160
2nd - Butch Marlin (Cheyenne, WY) - $120
Shootout #2:
1st - Jim Stoner (Brownsburg, IN) - $160
2nd - Alec Evreniadis (Adelaide, S. Australia) - $120
Another very worthwhile event took place during the 34th
Annual event - The VNEA “Cues For Kids” Program.
Many gracious companies donated cues, cases, clothing, etc.
to be raffled off during the tournament with the proceeds
going directly to the growing VNEA Junior Program.Thank
you very much to the following companies that donated merchandise: Valley, Aramith, Connoisseur Of Custom Cues,
Discount Custom Leather, GW Cues, J & J America, Meucci,
Omega Billiards, Ozone Billiards, Palmer Cues, Shaft Master
Lathes, Speed Break Contest and The Drill Instructor.
The Team competition concluded in the early afternoon on
June 1st. It was now time to start preparing for the highly
anticipated 34th Annual VNEA Awards Banquet and Entertainment Extravaganza. When the doors opened at 4:45p, the
players walked into an awesome setting surrounded by oldschool Las Vegas props which set the tone for the night!
As always, the players were treated to their pick of over a
dozen beverage stations, and the great sounds of the Blues
Brothers. Also, an incredible buffet style dinner was served
to the party-goers.The act entertained the crowd throughout
the hour long cocktail party and then hung around to greet
the players and have their pictures taken with them.
Once again serving as the 34th Annual emcee was VNEA’s
Director of Marketing & Promotions Brian Elliott. Brian made
sure that each and every award winner received their accolades and with the brilliantly lit set, everyone who stepped
on the stage knew that they were part of something special.
He also acknowledged the remarkable Manufacturer/Supplier
members that help support the growth of the VNEA World
Championships by displaying their products during the
tournament. They included: Connoisseur of Custom Cues,
Valley Pool Table Winner - Shawn Klausen
l-r: Link Pendley, Dean Liakakos, Brian Elliott
Every year the VNEA acknowledges some special people
behind the scenes who work incredibly hard throughout the
tournament. The following people were awarded beautiful
plaques for their hard work:
• Statistician Of The Year - Stan Garcia
• Set-Up Person Of The Year - Wally Howton
• Referee Of The Year - Oscar Cotton
Valley continued their support of the Annual VNEA Championships by giving away a phenomenal Valley Home Pool Table
at the banquet. Dean Liakakos, from Shaffer Amusement in
Dayton, OH, was the lucky winner of the beautiful table.
Closing out the evening’s festivities was the hilarious Tom
McGillen! Tom has been seen on Showtime and Comedy
Central as well as touring with George Lopez. His comical
act was the perfect conclusion to another great VNEA Awards
Banquet.
Another successful event was in the books and all of us at
the VNEA would like to thank every one of our players for
their continued support and we promise the future of your
Association is going to be GREAT!

VNEA AMATEUR POOL PLAYER
HALL OF FAME
The heart-pounding excitement of the Opening Ceremonies at the 34th Annual VNEA World Pool
Championships in Las Vegas, Nevada was the perfect setting for the induction of the newest
members of the VNEA Hall of Fame. With players gathered from all over the world and all of VNEA’s dignitaries in attendance, the stage
was set for the introduction of the 2014 VNEA Amateur Pool Player Hall of Fame inductees.
Receiving this prestigious honor, along with an exclusive Hall of Fame Jacket, Certificate and limited
edition VNEA Hall of Fame Trading Card Set, were the following players:
•
•
•
•
•
Ted Basset - Aactive Coin (Manitoba)
April Bedard Smith - Wal-Mac Amusements (Alberta)
Scott Davey - Games People Play (CO)
Gary Miller - D & R Star (MN)
Jack Reid - Ontario Skill Games (Ontario)
At the conclusion of the induction ceremonies, the new Hall of Fame members cordially mingled with admirers and signed autographs for those seeking keepsakes. The “2014 Class”
brings the VNEA Hall of Fame Membership to 106 players. Our congratulations to these very
special players.
LIFETIME MEMBERS
At the Annual President’s Reception, during the 34th Annual VNEA World Championships,
a very honorable presentation took place for 3 very special long time VNEA family members. These 3 people have performed their duties and carried themselves in such an honorable
fashion throughout the years that the title Lifetime Members seems to be a perfect match. For their remarkable efforts, Dave Everett (M & G Service - Ohio), Scott Morgan (Aactive
Coin - Manitoba), Jim Powell (VNEA - Michigan) were awarded beautiful hardwood
encased, etched brass Lifetime Sanction Cards.
Exemplifying ingenuity, longevity, adaptability, creativity and many other attributes, these
remarkable people have earned their standing as VNEA Lifetime Members. Congratulations!

Thousands of pool players have displayed their talents in
VNEA Leagues throughout the U.S. and abroad since the
inception of the VNEA in 1980. Our players are all very
important.
However, not all of these players will ever join the ranks
of Willie Mosconi, Johnny Archer or Allison Fisher. But, a
handful of them possess an incomparable desire to accomplish goals that far exceed an average pool players expectations. For these extraordinary players, and also players with
other special skills, the VNEA Hall of Fame was created in
1993. With 106 fine members already in place, the Hall promises to be a fraternity of honor and excellence.
If you believe that a player in your league system is deserving
of being titled a Hall of Famer, we encourage you to complete
this Official Ballot and return it to VNEA Headquarters by
January 25th, 2015. Taking into consideration the comments
on your ballots, the Awards Committee will choose the most
deserving players for the Hall. Those who are chosen will be
highlighted in a future issue of “8-Ball News & Views”. Be
sure to return “your nomination” TODAY!
Take This Opportunity To Nominate!
With nearly 100,000 league players in the VNEA, only 5 new
members will forever be etched in our prestigious history
books
Please attach a Separate Sheet to list Nominee’s qualifications!
