I would like to start my last article for the VNEA Magazine by talking about Tournaments. It is my opinion that Tournaments are the backbone of the Pool League System. If you are an Operator, it’s important that you make your Tournaments better each and every year. You can do this by Adding New Divisions, Conducting Daily Drawings and Obtaining Tables Sponsors. Table Sponsors will free-up money to be added back to the prize fund. Another very important element in Tournament preparation is making sure that players are put in the proper Divisions. This can be very difficult, but it is so important. When placing players in divisions, make sure that they are placed where they can “fairly compete” and not necessarily where they are “guaranteed to win”. Also, be sure to end the League Season with a well-organized Players Banquet! This is a fun night intended to make all of your players feel special and appreciated. Keys to success are a good 2 8-Ball News & Views Current VNEA President, Dave Hawkins from D&R Star in Austin, MN emcee, tasty food and beverages and most important of all is to be sure to present the winners with the “Gold” (Trophies)! There are those who say, “I have a whole room full of trophies, I don’t need anymore... just give me the money”. My answer to these players is this... sure there are players who have been playing for years and accumulated many trophies, BUT let’s not forget about those teams or players who “strike gold” for the first time and they’re told that we no longer give out trophies. Now that would be sad. Here’s a neat story that one of my long-time ladies Masters players shared with me the other day. One weekend when she was leaving for a pool tournament, she walked into her trophy room and said to all of her trophies, “Hey kids, mommy is leaving for the Tournament and she’s going to bring home a new “friend” for all you guys (trophies)”. This story kind of reminds us that yes it is fun to win money, but we also need our memories... something to show for our efforts. Trophies and memories last forever while money certainly does not. The VNEA World Championships will be here soon (May 23 - June 1) so get ready for the Greatest Pool Tournament In The World! It’s been one of the greatest pleasures of my life serving as the VNEA President for the last two years and I hope to see a lot of you in Vegas at the great Bally’s! Thanks for the honor. The 1,000 Singles and 1,300 Team players were delighted to have Dr.Cue Tom Rossman join Dave “The Ginger Wizard” Pearson for the four day weekend. TV Crews and local print media followed the entire event, starting with the “Suds & Spuds” Mixer Thursday night. Dave Courington, Valley’s Sales Director, was impressed, stating, “This is the best local media coverage for a pool event I have ever seen”. Dr. Cue and the Ginger Wizard continually one-upped each other, thrilling all who came to see their show. Rossman and Pearson make an unbeatable entertainment team and PA-VNEA was lucky to have these two professional performers. We hope they can schedule PA-VNEA States again. T echnology was another star performer for our 31st year. Using specialty software, players were texted their match when they were ready to play. Fifteen flat screen TV’s displayed digital charts complete with live streaming on-line charts for smart phone monitoring. 180 tables in the Erie Bayfront Convention Center’s 45,000 square foot center allowed for “Vegas Style” seating at every match, with risers for spectator viewing of finals, including the Junior singles event. B reaking the monopoly of the western border of Pennsylvania’s possession of the “A” team’s traveling trophy, Ray Bird’s Williamsport Eagles’ team took the title of best in the state to the center of Pennsylvania for the first time in 31 years. Ray Bird has brought a team to PA-VNEA States for 15 years; this was their year to take home the hardware. Congratulations to the Williamsport Eagles! In the Open Master Singles, Erie’s own John Barbale took the Championship. Johnny B has 25 years competing at PA-VNEA States and has played on numerous championship teams. This year the crafty veteran could not be denied his throne. ost Tournament Director, Ed Borgia of Warner H Coin, praised his staff and volunteer committee for running a “near perfect” tournament and the Erie Bayfront Convention Center’s team for welcoming the PA-VNEA States again. Getting together with old friends and meeting new ones along with that great Monday night Opening Ceremony of the Team event is what makes this tournament one of a kind. Getting ready for this great tournament means playing as much pool as possible to stay in that end of season form. It also helps a lot if you can find a larger table to practice on before the big tournament. A 7 foot table always looks easier after practicing on an 8 or 9 foot table. Many players don’t realize how important it is to practice breaking. The most important thing on breaking the balls is keeping the cue ball out of a pocket. When you practice breaking observe if the cue ball is going consistently to the right or left off the front ball, and adjust your aim accordingly. When striking the front ball on the rack, the perfect break is when the cue ball bounces straight back and does not touch a rail. Scratching on the break can cost you dearly in a crucial game. Check the cloth for speed. Place an object ball one diamond up from the corner pocket near the long rail. Place the cue ball three diamonds back which would make it in front of the side pocket. Pocket the ball with a draw shot to see how much speed it takes to get the cue ball to the other end of the table. If the cloth is brand-new on the table it will require much less power than a cloth that is somewhat worn. The same will apply to all position shots. On new cloth, the cue ball will travel a lot farther than it will when playing on a worn cloth. Don’t forget to check out my new DVD (A Pool Lesson With Jerry Briesath). And Patients! By Tom Rossman Practice with Discipline for Confidence in Your Game! I want to suggest some excellent “practice” for you before your next event. This “discipline” of special development will give you a “head start” on any goal you may set in your billiard journey. The primary focus for this practice regimen is on “right brain” training and the confidence building result of a “free flight” stroke. I find this approach the “best” way to develop a “straight” arm swing and keep the “left brain” from “steering the cue” on its way to an intended target. Doing these “right brain” exercises first will assure that when you do the “analytical” part of your game later, you can count on the “right brain” doing its part with programmed precision. I believe the following practice regimen took me to the top of my game later in life when many players of a similar age were starting to lose their competitive edge. I have experienced benefits in regular and “artistic” events, as well as many personal record-breaking efforts at various “wing shot” and “speed shooting” specialties. My “disciplined” practice regimen (7 days minimum in a row prior to event) consists of A) Running a full rack of balls – any order without missing and randomly placed on table in “spread” fashion, B) Banking 15 balls (4 cross corner to my left, 4 cross side to my right, 4 cross side to my left, and 3 cross corner to my right) – balls on long center line of table about 2 to 3 inches apart with cue ball in hand on each bank – no missing allowed, C) Shooting wing shots until 15 are made in a row – chalk is placed on foot spot, cue ball and object ball both physically in hand with object ball rolled toward “open area” side of chalk cube – cue ball is shot from behind head string to moving ball. Ball must go between chalk and end cushion for a corner pocket make. Chalk may be hit when shot is over. ABC practice points above should be done in order with good mechanics, plus with the best rhythm and fluency possible. I recommend you start with fewer balls or “goals” on each challenge and increase number as success and results are achieved. For example, you may want to start with running half a rack, banking 4 banks (1 each way), and then making 2 wing shots in a row. Establish what works best for you and then challenge yourself to the next level and beyond. Another “bonus” and disciplined exercise for me is to shoot the cue ball at lag speed. Start anywhere behind the head string with the cue ball and shoot it two table length’s speed until you are able to return within 3 inches of the exact position you started from. Do this with your eyes open and a firm bridge (closed or open). “Listen” to the “tip contact” each time you perform this routine. “Lock in” and / or “memorize” the “sound of the hit” and do at least 5 times in a row with success. You will find a special trust in your “audio memory banks” that provides the best way to “get in touch” with the attempted shot speed. Then, close your eyes and try the shot again with the “conditioned” recall of what the sound was when you did the shot properly. You will be surprised at how consistent your game will become when you start this unique exercise. Look and listen! Enjoy the roll, until next time when… …The Doctor’s In The Drs In...
