REGIONAL EVENTS
Fort Worth, Texas / by Dave Townsend & Mike Fowler
1st Annual Texas
Regional Tournament
of dollars in prize money, awards and prizes were at
stake, as well as, the chance to see old friends and
make some new ones.
September 28-30, 2012
Marriott DFW
The competition was fierce on finals Sunday and included two ties in the 3rd place match and a double
match for the championship in the women’s division.
They had to be exhausted!
The newly created Texas Regional VNEA
Association, with the assistance from VNEA Charters in Texas and Oklahoma combined for a Major
VNEA Event at the Marriott DFW in Fort Worth, Texas
the weekend of September 28-30, 2012.
T hanks go to Mike Fowler of Vend Music of Texas
(Tournament Director) and Jay Scanland of One
Source Amusements (Host Operator) for all the
organizing and planning for the event. Thanks to
Dave Courington from Valley-Dynamo for providing
the new Valley Tables for this event, Jay Scanland,
Joe Miller of S & M Vending, Blasé Licce of All
American Vending; and many other Dallas-Ft. Worth
operators for assistance with transportation, set up
and tear down of the tables.
A very special Texas-sized THANK YOU to Dave
Everett and John Everett for traveling all the way from
Northeast Ohio to provide experienced, professional
refereeing for our First Annual VNEA Tournament.
We also want to extend our appreciation to Omega
Billiards. Michael and his staff have decided to
become a member and be a major sponsor and
contributor to the Texas Regional VNEA. This year,
they provided the cue sticks for the Women’s Division champions. Thanks to Michael Hoang for your
support!
regg Elliott from VNEA National Headquarters
G

this 1st Major VNEA Regional Tournament.
A lso in attendance during the weekend were several

dignitaries, including Kirby Cline (President) of
Antler Amusements in San Antonio, Joe Franz of
H.A. Franz & Co. (of Houston with offices in Dallas
and San Antonio), Bob Russell of Vend Music of
Texas. Other industry attendees included Steve
Murray of Touchtunes.
umerous other Texas area operators came to see
N
what the hoopla was all about and learn about us.
To them, we say, get a VNEA Charter and come join
the fun!
The biggest THANK YOU must be extended to the
players that made up the 31 Open Teams and 6
Women’s Teams from Dallas-Ft. Worth, Houston
and Tulsa, Oklahoma. They all came together for a
fun and competitive event in Ft. Worth. Thousands
Congratulations to every single player for making
this a very memorable event and a pleasure to run.
Open Team Winner: Red Sticks
Dave “The Ginger Wizard” Pearson was there to
entertain and amazed all the VNEA players with his
amazing trick shots and jump shots. He also made
time to visit with players, give pointers, shoot challenge matches and provide some instruction. Thank
you David!
For those VNEA players who had never gone to
the VNEA World Championships in Las Vegas,
they had the thrill of participating in a 1st Class
VNEA Tournament with true “TEXAS-SIZED VNEA
HOSPITALITY”!
Women’s Team Winner: Native Rage
We look forward to next year when the “2nd TEXAS
REGIONAL VNEA TOURNAMENT” comes to TEXAS.

The 27th Annual Rocky Mountain VNEA
Singles held in Cheyenne Wyoming was a great
success this year. This tournament featured the compusport software system for running of the brackets,
making possible live online viewing of the brackets
as players advanced.
Over 470 players attended this event. Taking the 1st
place spot in the tough Open AAA/AA division was
James Fortin who dedicated his win to Gilbert Lovato. James also received a beautiful belt buckle and
decorative box that was donated by Roland Lucero
and Rich Montoya.
For those that lost out in 4 rounds or less, there was
a 2nd chance tournament. Over 125 players participated in the 2nd chance tournament. Then for those
who lost out before the finals and not in the money,
there was a Hard Luck tournament with 95 players.
On Sunday was the Junior’s event with over 35 players under 21 participating. Thanks to John Gilbert for
donating cues to this event. There was a sportsmanship awarded to each age group. Congratulations to

Thank you to Nil Gaudet from Compusport for his
hard work with the tournament software program.
Our Referee-In-Chief, Cory Coulter and his group
of referee’s did an outstanding job as did our volunteers who worked many countless hours. From the
podium staff to registration and accommodation, the
effort was greatly appreciated. The mini-tournament
volunteers were Amy Reid and Stephanie Grimshaw
and were on hand late into the evenings and did an
excellent job running the event. The volunteers who
participated in the set up and take down of the pool
tables were from Northshore Pool Leagues in Sault
Ste. Marie and they did an awesome job. The room
was set up and ready to go in record time under the
watchful eye of John Weloski.
To the players from the various Charter Holders,
thank you for your participation. Please visit our
website at ovnea.com to view the 2013 Results and
Photographs as well as information on other upcoming events.
Last but not least, I would like to thank our hard
working executive members; John Weloski - Vice
President, Larry Zigras - Treasurer and Barb Landrey
- Secretary as well as Committee Chairs, Bill Landrey
and Boomer Braido for the many countless hours they
have spent helping this organization. We have been

Erie Bayfront Convention Center • March 8-10

The 31st PA-VNEA State 8-Ball Championships were held at the beautiful and spacious Erie
Bayfront Convention Center on March 8th, 9th &
10th. The 1,000 Singles and 1,300 Team players
were delighted to have Dr.Cue Tom Rossman join
Dave “The Ginger Wizard” Pearson for the four day
weekend. TV Crews and local print media followed
the entire event, starting with the “Suds & Spuds”
Mixer Thursday night. Dave Courington, Valley’s
Sales Director, was impressed, stating, “This is the
best local media coverage for a pool event I have ever
seen”. Dr. Cue and the Ginger Wizard continually
one-upped each other, thrilling all who came to see
their show. Rossman and Pearson make an unbeatable entertainment team and PA-VNEA was lucky to
have these two professional performers. We hope
they can schedule PA-VNEA States again.
T echnology was another star performer for our 31st
year. Using specialty software, players were texted
their match when they were ready to play. Fifteen flat
screen TV’s displayed digital charts complete with
live streaming on-line charts for smart phone monitoring. 180 tables in the Erie Bayfront Convention
Center’s 45,000 square foot center allowed for “Vegas
Style” seating at every match, with risers for spectator
viewing of finals, including the Junior singles event.
B reaking the monopoly of the western border of
Pennsylvania’s possession of the “A” team’s traveling
trophy, Ray Bird’s Williamsport Eagles’ team took the
title of best in the state to the center of Pennsylvania
for the first time in 31 years. Ray Bird has brought a
team to PA-VNEA States for 15 years; this was their
year to take home the hardware. Congratulations to the
Williamsport Eagles! In the Open Master Singles, Erie’s
own John Barbale took the Championship. Johnny B
has 25 years competing at PA-VNEA States and has
played on numerous championship teams. This year
the crafty veteran could not be denied his throne.
ost Tournament Director, Ed Borgia of Warner
H
Coin, praised his staff and volunteer committee for
running a “near perfect” tournament and the Erie
Bayfront Convention Center’s team for welcoming
the PA-VNEA States again. We all salute the players
of Pennsylvania for their excellent sportsmanship
throughout the entire weekend.

Junior Provincial 8-Ball Titles Declared
The 1st Annual Ontario Open Junior 8-Ball Championships were held in North Bay on July 19-20, 2013. Two days of nerve “rackin” play
showcased some of Ontario’s finest young players including players from North Bay, Ottawa and London. There were three divisions for singles
competition: Major, Minor, Youth. In Team play, players competed in both a Major and Minor Division.
Youth Singles Division:
In Youth Singles action, Nicolas Raymond from North Bay had to battle in this 14 player group to become this year’s Provincial Champion.
Raymond qualified for the finals with 4 straight wins, defeating Cameron Robb, Angelina Stone, Jonah Johnson and in the quarter-finals, defeated eventual third place finisher Riley
Labreche, also from North Bay. Raymond’s opponent in the finals was another North Bay entry, Evan Derosier. Raymond only needed the first set to take the title.
Derosier took the long road to the finals after losing his 2nd match to Riley Labreche. Derosier then bounced back and went on to win his next five matches to advance to the finals. Finishing in 4th place was Will Patterson.
Minor Singles Division:
In this 12 player division, Karim Attia from Ottawa was declared the champion. Attia started the day by defeating Ty Georgei from Cambridge then went on to defeat Matt Bedard from
North Bay then Nicholas Ridley and Brenden Coenjarts from London to advance to the finals.
Karim Attia’s opponent in the final was Adam Cucullo of North Bay. Cucullo won his first match of the tournament against fellow North Bayite Kendra Monkman then lost his next outing
to Ridley sending him to the loser’s side of the bracket. Cucullo got back on track winning his next four matches to make it to the semi-final. In the semi’s, he defeated third place finisher
Coenjarts by a score of 3-1.
The final match with Attia and Cucullo was over in the first match with Attia handing Cucullo a 3-0 loss. Finishing in fourth place was Ty Georgei.
Major Singles Division:
The Major Division title went to David Moyer of London who defeated Tim Bristow from Ottawa in the final. Moyer went through the tournament without a loss, starting off by defeating
Shaiana Thibault and Danielle Couroux from North Bay. In his next outing, Moyer defeated fellow London player Stuart McTaggart, sending him to the B side of the bracket.
Tim Bristow of Ottawa advanced to the finals against Moyer by defeating Tyler Moring and Taylor Thomason from North Bay. Morgan then lost to McTaggart and was sent to the B side.
Morgan bounced back and defeated North Bay’s Thibault and Ryan Derosier then in a semi-final re-match, defeated McTaggart who finished in third place.
The final match up of Bristow and Morgan only needed one set with David Moyer winning by a score of 3-0. Finishing in fourth place was Ryan Derosier.
Minor Team Division:
It was an all North Bay finish in this 2-player team event with Sean Larivee and Taylor Patterson taking the title, going through the tournament without a loss until the final. They
opened the tournament with a win over Jonah Johnson and Logan Langois. Next they defeated Chris Larivee and Peter McKay before losing to Riley Labreche and Mathieu Bedard and a
trip to the B side of the bracket. Labreche and Bedard were now guaranteed a spot in the final.
Once on the B side, Patterson and Larivee wasted little time getting back to their winning ways and defeated Johnson and Langois in the semi-finals to set up a rematch with Bedard and
Labreche. The final was a hard fought battle with Patterson and Larviee taking the 1st set by a score of 42-33 and forced a sudden death overtime match. It was Patterson and Larivee
emerging as the victors winning by a close score of 51 to 46 to take the title.
Finishing in third was Jonah Johnson and Logan Langlois and fourth place went to Chris Larivee and Peter McKay.
Major Team Division:
Karim Attia and Tim Bristow of Ottawa took top honors in the Major Division, going through the tournament without a loss until the final.
Attia and Bristow started off by defeating North Bay’s Ryan Lindenbach and Shaiana Thibault. In their next outing they defeated the team of David Moyer and Stuart McTaggart of London
who they would see again in the final. In their next outing they defeated Nicholas Raymond and Will Patterson from North Bay to advance to the finals.
McTaggart and Moyer raced through the B side of the bracket by defeating North Bay’s Adam Cucullo and Kendra Monkman, Nicholas Ridley and Brenden Coenjarts of London and in the
semi-final defeated the team of Raymond and Patterson.
The final was another close affair with McTaggart and Moyer handing Attia and Bristow a 40-25 loss in the first set. Not to be outdone, Attia and Bristow bounced back in the sudden death
match and easily won by a score of 40-13. Third place went to the team of Nicholas Raymond and Will Patters and fourth place finishers were Nicholas Ridley and Brenden Coenjarts.
