In Uncertain Times, CCCS Helps Restore Hope
Rosemary Latham had it all planned out. She
would continue her job as a machine operator until
she had saved enough
money, then return to
school to become a registered nurse. Her
plans were abruptly
changed when the manufacturing plant where
she worked was forced
to close. Rosemary was
left unemployed and
unsure of what the future would bring.
“Jeddy was very helpful,” Rosemary remembers. “She
helped me apply for the Mortgage Payment Program
and was with me every step of the way. She helped
me compile all of the required documents, and
navigate the entire process from start to finish.”
The Mortgage Payment Program helps
homeowners who have been made unemployed
through no fault of their own to receive
state-funded interest free loans, which allow
them to keep up with mortgage payments while
they search or train for a new job.
Since starting the program in December 2010,
CCCS has helped more than 720 local homeowners
receive approximately $13 million in mortgage
payment assistance.
“I didn’t know what I was going to do,” says Rosemary.
“We got word of the plant closing from the news before

Safe and Healthy Night Out for Southside Youth
Family Service of the
Piedmont’s Fairview
Family Resource Center
(FFRC) held its annual
Boys Night Out and
Girls Night Out in June.
The events for boys and
girls from High Point’s Southside neighborhood are
designed to encourage young people to become
strong leaders in their community.
This year’s Boys Night Out featured a basketball
skills challenge hosted by volunteers from High
Point University’s Men’s Basketball Team and
Recreation Services staff. “It really made our
guys feel special,” said FFRC Education Coordinator
Lamonica Mitchell. “The basketball players were
great role models for
them.”
Boys in attendance also
enjoyed a hot dog supper
and live jazz music by
The Storytellers Band.
Volunteer Ralph Mitchell
led a discussion on the
importance of never giving
up, not allowing others to put you down, and encouraging yourself.

Message from the President
The end of summer marks
the start of a new year for
Family Service of the
Piedmont. I hope you
will join us as we reflect on
the year’s successes and
challenges, and look forward
to the year to come, at our
Annual Meeting luncheon,
September 23rd at
Sedgefield Country Club.
We have had a successful year in many ways. First and
foremost, our success is measured by change in the lives
of the families we serve. Our cover story tells of one
out-of-work homeowner faced with foreclosure, who
found new hope through our Mortgage Protection
Program. This story is just one of many examples. Each
day our amazing staff is working to empower children
and adults to regain financial, mental and family health;
to rise above a history of domestic violence or sexual
abuse; to find strength, restore stability and thrive.
Our outstanding leadership team is key to the success of
our agency. I am happy to welcome Shay Harger as
our new Director of Victim Services, overseeing our
programs for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault,
and other violent crime. Shay’s responsibilities will
include the relaunch of Harmony House – our
supervised visitation and exchange program has been
approved to resume operations this year.
Our agency’s success depends on our ability to fund our
programs effectively. Last year, 27% of our funding
came from government grants. We know this number
will only decrease in future years. But the needs of the
families and children we serve are becoming no less
urgent. Our clients are increasingly reliant upon people
like you who support our agency in so many ways. Last
year, individual and corporate donations, including
giving through local United Ways and directly to Family
Service, made up more than 40% of our revenue. I am
happy and grateful to say that this number is increasing,
thanks to the steadfast generosity of our many friends
and supporters.
In particular, this year our Special Events saw remarkable
growth. Our 19th Annual High Point Oyster Roast,
presented by Smart Choice, was the biggest and best
ever. (Save the date of March 7th 2014 for the 20th
Anniversary Oyster Roast, sure to be an even bigger hit
in High Point!) Our Greensboro Oyster Roast’s 10th
Anniversary event, presented by VF, was another spectacular
evening of good food, good friends and great entertainment
(see story on opposite page). Finally, our 4th Annual Pig
Pickin’ also broke records and helped cement that event’s
growing reputation as the best summer night out in
Jamestown (see story on page 4).
Together, these events raised a net income of more
than $450,000, an increase of 32% over last year. This
incredible result testifies to the generosity and vision of
our community, as well as the talents and tenacity of our
volunteer event committees. I am immensely grateful to
everyone who helped plan and execute these fabulous
events. Let’s keep up the momentum for even greater
things in 2014!
To be successful, a human services agency requires three
things: a committed and capable staff, sound management,
and strong community support. Family Service of the
Piedmont has displayed all three magnificently in the
past year. With your help, we will continue building on
our strengths in the coming year as we work for safe and
healthy families in the Piedmont Triad.

The Guild of Family Service of High Point held
its annual Yard Sale in May. Guild members
came together to organize, sort and set up prior
to the sale, as well as donating many items.
The sale was well attended and raised over
$2,000 to support Family Service’s programs
in High Point.
Thanks to an anonymous donor, this year the
sale took place indoors, off Main Street in High
Point. “The new location brought in a far greater
number of shoppers than in years past,” said the
Guild’s Yard Sale Chair Donna Cumby. “We
are so appreciative to the building owner for
allowing the Guild to use their facility. Shoppers
really enjoyed themselves and got some amazing
deals.”
The Guild of Family Service of High Point
seeks to promote the services and raise
awareness of Family Service of the
Piedmont through fundraising, community
outreach and hands-on volunteering.

10th Greensboro Oyster Roast a Spectacular Success
The Greensboro Oyster Roast
celebrated its 10th Anniversary
in grand style on April 12th at
the home of Liz and David
Johnson. The event presented
by VF surpassed all expectations
and raised more than a quarter of
a million dollars for Family Service
of Greensboro Foundation.
The grounds of the Johnson’s
home easily accommodated the large crowd of more than 1100 guests
who turned out to enjoy the oysters and delicious dinner buffet served
by Pepper Moon Catering. Live
music by The Band of Oz made the
evening even more memorable.
A joint presentation between Family
Service of Greensboro Foundation
and The Guild of Family Service of
Greensboro, the Oyster Roast has

grown to become one of Greensboro’s most
popular and successful fundraisers. The
chair of the very first Greensboro Oyster
Roast, Rebecca Schlosser, was recognized
this year as Honorary Chair of the 10th
Anniversary event.
Event Chairs Carol McCoy and Mojgan
Jordan thanked the volunteer members of
their Oyster Roast Committee for many hours of planning and hard
work that made the event possible. Greensboro Foundation Chair
Anne Osborne also played a key role in helping make this year’s
Oyster Roast a great success, they said.
The volunteers signed up a record
number of event Hosts and Sponsors,
and helped bring in dozens of items
for the raffle and silent auction. The
auction was a new addition to the
Oyster Roast and brought in more
than $10,000 in its first year.

Hammin’ and Jammin’ at the Jamestown Pig Pickin’
A little rain didn’t dampen the Fourth Annual
Jamestown Pig Pickin’ on August 10th.
This year’s event with a beach party theme
drew a crowd of more than 550 people and
raised proceeds of $65,000 for Family Service
of the Piedmont.
Uncooperative weather threatened to spoil the event. Thankfully, Pig
Pickin’ Committee Co-Chair Mark Whitesell, Corporate Manager for
Grand Rental Station, stepped up and supplied additional tents to keep
guests dry and happy. “Mark really went above and beyond in making
the last minute changes needed to prepare for the rain,” said his Co-Chair
Kris Flynt. “The people of Jamestown didn’t let a little wet weather
keep them away! I ’m honored to be a part of such a caring and dedicated
community.”
Bright colored umbrellas and
beach towels, hanging tropical
fish and an array of seaside
décor conceived by Kathy
Johnson and Tricia Seymour
transformed the grounds of
Magnolia Farm, the historic
home of Jenny and George Ragsdale, into a coastal paradise. Guests
raved over the delicious spread of
all-you-can-eat BBQ and Chicken
donated by BBQ Joe’s, southern sides
and desserts by Above and Beyond
Catering, and a delightful assortment
of appetizers by Southern Roots
Restaurant. Music and dancing was the main appeal of the event as heart
and soul of beach music band The Embers returned for a second year.
Guests also enjoyed a fun photo booth, a live auction presented by
professional auctioneer Jon Manring, and a silent auction featuring
items from merchants throughout the Jamestown area. Together the
auctions raised $11,500. After the
event was done, members and friends
of Adams Farm Community
Church Boy Scout Troop 3
volunteered to help clear the site.
“Each year’s Pig Pickin’ seems to get
better and better,” Whitesell said.
“This year featured many new elements that added to the excitement and
fun of the event. We had lots of great sponsors and 121 host couples, an
all time high! It was another great experience serving alongside of this
hardworking and dedicated committee.

Helping Hands
Family Service of the
Piedmont’s domestic
violence shelters,
Clara House and
Greensboro and
Carpenter House
in High Point, received recent grants from the
Mary Lynn Richardson Foundation, and
from Food Lion.
The women’s group of
Parkwood Baptist
Church in High Point
donated a huge variety of
toys, bottles, diapers, wipes
and more to support
new moms enrolled in
Family Service’s Healthy
Start program.
Students from Hampton Elementary
School ACES program collected nearly 400
books in support of North Carolina’s Give
Five-Read Five campaign. The initiative
encourages
community
members to
donate five
new or gently
used books to
schools to
support summer reading efforts. Books were
donated to Family Service of the Piedmont
and the Salvation Army.
St. Francis Episcopal
Church in Greensboro also
donated books for Family
Service clients, left over
from their 55th annual
book sale.

Point Cycling Classic. Staff members solicited
donations from friends and family and walked
over a mile in support of agency programs in
High Point.
Children from
West Market

about agency programs. The group donated
“busy bags” which included stickers, coloring
pages and crayons to be used by children in
the agency’s waiting rooms.
Youth Night Out
Continued from page 1
Meanwhile, the young ladies of Southside
participated in an all-night sleepover at
the FFRC. The girls took part in activities
including dance and cheer competitions,
jewelry making and yoga. They also
watched movies and pampered themselves
by doing their nails, hair and makeup.
“We ate lots of snacks and shared many
laughs; no one slept the entire night,”
laughed FFRC Outreach Specialist
Donita Williams. “All of the girls had a
wonderful time.”
“The Boys and Girls Nights Out focus
on character development and present an
opportunity for the Southside youth to
experience a night of safe and healthy
fun,” said FFRC Program Manager
Andrea Dalporto. “It was a time of
bonding and a great way for the kids to
grow closer together and strengthen their
sense of community.”
