South Dakota Symphony Orchestra is, “That’s not at all what I expected!” Sometimes people are taken by surprise by the music they hear. Their preconceptions about classical music are swept away by the diversity of programming, so many countries and eras given a voice during each concert. Other times it’s the quality of the orchestra itself: “I had no idea we had such a treasure in Sioux Falls!” And sometimes people are overwhelmed with the whole concert experience, including the magnificence of the Mary W. Sommervold Hall, its beauty and superb acoustics. Indeed, the award-winning South Dakota Symphony Orchestra is a model ensemble for any region of the country. This season offers so many opportunities to find new music to love, as well as to cherish the more familiar. Whether you’re hearing a Chopin concerto or Beethoven symphony for the first time, or taking a journey through the mind’s ear to China or Persia, you will be delighted by the unexpected. It’s the chance to encounter music that will move you, inspire you, pique your curiosity, or even make you laugh. It is our sincere desire that your world be expanded, that you come away from your South Dakota Symphony Orchestra experience with more music to love each and every time we share a concert together.
