SCI Bowhunter Chapter Item
#THD-01 Archery Nilgai Hunt, for TWO Hunters, Texas (SCI Bowhunter Chapter Item) The famous King Ranch stepped to the plate at the request of Todd Brady, a past chapter board member, and has provided an outstanding opportunity to bowhunt the highly soughtafter nilgai. This large Asian antelope is also referred to as the “blue bull,” and is native to India, Pakistan and Nepal. Large bulls often weigh close to 600 pounds, and besides making for a fun and challenging hunt, the meat is often noted as being the best wild game many hunters have ever tasted. These hunts are typically done from ladder stands, over fence crossings and waterholes. If the winds are up, though, you can do some stalk hunting through the thick oak forests. Both hunters should plan to arrive on a weekday, with time to hunt that afternoon. They will hunt the next two full days, and end after the morning hunt on the fourth day. Included are lodging, guide, and one nilgai for each hunter. Not included are a cook ($250/day), food, and gratuity. However, if you want to do the cooking yourself, that is acceptable. Lodging is “bunkhouse style,” and very comfortable. The guides will field dress the animals and help you get them to a processor, or help you quarter them up for the ice chests you provide. Extra hunters on trip are welcome at $1800 each, with no more than four total for the trip. Extra nilgai, above the two included, are $1,000 per bull and $300 per cow. Hogs and javelina are available for $150 each, and turkeys are $275 each, if in season. This hunt may be taken in October 2012 or March-May 2013. The high bidder will get first right of refusal to buy Item B at the same high bid price. If the high bidder only wants one item, the immediate underbidder will be given first right of refusal to buy Item B at the high bid. If the underbidder chooses not to exercise this option, then we will auction item #B anew. It might be a good idea for some friends to get prepared for this great pair of auction items. Once again, we have this tremendous shooting course offering from Mark Thompson of Thompson Shooting Systems. Mark has done seminars at some of our past conventions; many of our members have not only become familiar with Mark through those seminars, but have taken his course as well. A group from the GSCO office staff took his course recently. The staff simply cannot say enough good things about it. Just think of it: shooting an 8” group or less, at 1,000 yards or more. It is possible, and Mark can show you how! You should seriously consider bidding on this course for three people. BONUS: Additional shooters can be added to this group for a discounted price of $1,000 each. Mark knows how to deal with new shooters as well as old, hard-headed ones. When the group of four from the GSCO office took the course, the one member who had shot the least ended up shooting the best group of all. Guess what? The so-called old pro, Dennis Campbell, shot the worst group of all, but still plenty good enough to take a deer-sized animal at 1,000 yards. This course is for everyone, and will improve anyone’s shooting ability. Get a couple of friends and consider bidding as a group for this great item! Heck, just buy it and take a couple of friends or family along! Mark Thompson, Thompson Shooting Systems #THD-03 Exotics Hunt, Texas (SCI Bowhunter Chapter Item) SCI Bowhunter Chapter founding president Ricardo Longoria came forward in support of the chapter by offering this fully guided exotic hunt in Medina County, Texas. It will be for three days and four nights, for one hunter and one non-hunter. The high bidder will be able to use a rifle or a bow for this hunt. This ranch is gamerich, and one can expect to harvest exceptional trophies. Included is lodging at a comfortable local motel, all meals, transportation to and from San Antonio and the ranch, three days of guiding, field care, and trophy fees for one blackbuck, one trophy red sheep and one trophy addax. Also included is delivery of animals to a local taxidermist for trophy prep and shipping. Not included are Texas hunting license, trophy prep, packing, shipping and gratuities. The hunt can be taken any open dates in 2012 or 2013. Rowdy has been one of GSCO’s greatest supporters, having donated hunts for our auctions for several years. Rowdy has also been an exhibitor at every one of our conventions to date. This hunt is for three to five days, but Rowdy says three days will usually be sufficient, as “everybody gets one.” As stated, it will be completely free range, and everything is included upon arrival at the specific ranch for the hunt. This hunt may be taken in 2012 or 2013. Accommodations will be in the cabin on the ranch, where Rowdy and a cook do a fine job of making you very comfortable. The aoudads from this ranch qualify for the Ovis World Slam®. Our thanks go out to Rowdy for this generous full donation. Rowdy McBride, McBride Hunting Services P.O. Several GSCO members have taken this hunt with Cole. In 2010 alone, Stacee Frost, Sara Brandenburg and GSCO’s own Cameron Mitchell all took fine antelope with Cole. In fact, Cameron’s pronghorn became the “Closing Shot” photo in the Fall/Winter 2010 issue of our SUPER SLAM publication. You also see Stacee here, who is on the SCI Bowhunter Chapter board. The most productive method is to hunt the waterholes and all report that this worked very well. BONUS: Cole says the high bidder can take a second buck antelope for a trophy fee of $1,500. This bonus sure would give the high bidder a chance to take a trophy and then “wait out” the hordes of waterhole bucks, while looking for that “buck of a lifetime.” Antelope permits must be applied for by the high bidder, but they have been easy to obtain in Cole’s area. Extra hunters are welcome at the regular price and non-hunters at $300 each for the three days. Our appreciation goes out to Cole for his continued support of GSCO. This is a full donation. This five-day, four-night trip would be perfect for a small family reunion, couples’ getaway, or a girls’ “out-oftowner.” The Retreat at Thunder Ridge is a spectacular 14,000-square-foot log lodge nestled high in the beautiful Rocky Mountains of southwestern Colorado. It sits on 172 acres of meadows, with spruce, pine and aspen forest. Located just 14 miles northwest of the old mining town of Durango, it is easy to get to. Designed, owned and operated by Lew & Laura Webb, Thunder Ridge has eight guest rooms, designed to accommodate a variety of group configurations. Six of the eight beautifully decorated and spacious rooms have a king bed, plus a bunk, so depending on the group makeup, each can very comfortably serve four guests. Two rooms have only a king bed. Each of the eight rooms has its own nicely appointed bathroom with a shower, and all but two have an outside covered deck. The lodge has wonderful indoor “common areas” and sitting in front of a crackling fire in the evenings is just what the doctor ordered! The large game room has a piano, pool table, large felt game table, checkers, chess and backgammon boards, big screen TV and library. The “Cowboy Bar” is perfect for just hanging out to talk. The lodge is also equipped with high-speed wireless for your laptop. Outside is a beautiful pool (rare at 8,000 feet!) with lots of room on the deck to lounge in the sun on one of many chaise lounges or patio chairs. The pool is a “sport” type, so there is a basketball hoop and volleyball net available for those inter-group “rivalries” to be worked out! You may also enjoy the covered hot tub that looks out over the pasture in front of the lodge, particularly enjoyable when it is snowing. The large lower level deck overlooks the horseshoe pit, as well as the pasture and forest beyond. This package includes lodging for up to 10 guests, one dinner prepared and served by your hosts, Lew & Laura, plus drinks and snacks while you’re visiting. You may also upgrade to a “full service” stay, add guests in excess of 10, or nights in excess of four. Please contact Lew for the additional costs. As a guideline, full service guests (includes three full meals per day, prepared fresh and served) are $150 per day. Lew & Laura Webb 14688 County Road 240 Durango, CO 81301 (970) 259-6383 Email: [email protected] www.ThunderRidge.org VALUE: $4,100 wildsheep.org 19 #THD-07 Archery Pronghorn Hunt for TWO Hunters, Nebraska (SCI Bowhunter Chapter Item) Craig Kjerstad of Get R Done Outfitters in northwestern Nebraska, is one of the best kept secrets in America for trophy class antelope. He is offering this three-day archery hunt, for TWO hunters as his continuing commitment to support Safari Club, and in particular its new Bowhunter Chapter. Craig is a pronghorn specialist, and loves to put bowhunters on big goats! Hunting will take place primarily from ground blinds (sitting over waterholes or alfalfa fields) on over 16,000 acres of private land, but could include some decoying, or stalking. The average shot distance is 30 yards. Average score of antelope taken the last three years is well over the Pope & Young minimum, with some Boone & Crockett bucks taken as well. Pronghorns in the area typically carry heavy horns with deep hooks. Craig comments, “If a bowhunter doesn’t take a record class buck, it typically means they got anxious and shot the first buck that came in, or they missed!” Shot opportunities during 2009-10 were 100%, with this last year being 95% due to some very inclement weather. Nebraska archery antelope tags are over the counter, but in order to rifle hunt antelope you must be a resident of Nebraska, and it is now taking seven years to draw a rifle tag. This has dramatically increased the number of mature antelope for bowhunters! This hunt includes motel accommodations, guiding, transportation back and forth to the ranch from your motel, breakfast, lunch and dinner, and skinning and quartering of game. Accommodations will be one room, double occupancy, at the Motel 6 in Chadron, Nebraska, which includes two queen beds, microwave, fridge, flat screen TV, indoor pool and hot tub. Not included are permits, fees, stamps, taxes, meat processing, meat shipping, or taxidermy. Non-hunters are welcome at $100 per day. This hunt may be taken during the 2012 or 2013 seasons. Our super-supportive member Gary Hansen introduced this company to us, and a great relationship has come of that introduction. Not only is Jonas Brothers of Colorado an exhibitor, but a Corporate Sponsor for this year’s convention as well. The third tier of our relationship is multiple taxidermy donations. This is one of three you will see on our auctions. It is pretty simple, as a $5000 credit against any type work Jonas does. We have chosen a sheep diorama with a wolf to illustrate this donation, and of course the credit could go against something such as that. Naturally, life size mounts or shoulder mounts would be available too. There is no restriction on the way you could use your credit with this fine company. Go by their booth and visit, and let them know your appreciation for their support. The Zambezi sitatunga is one of the most highly sought-after trophies in Africa. The beautiful spiral horns and distinctive facial markings are reminiscent of the mountain nyala. The 10day hunt for the sitatunga is only the beginning at Shiwa Ng’andu, as the other plains game hunting is exceptional, and the accommodations and grounds of the estate are quite simply spectacular. This hunt is for one hunter and one non-hunter, and can be with any weapon (not just a bow). Since Shiwa Ng’andu harvests only three sitatunga per year, this is quite an amazing donation! In the last few years, bulls have regularly been taken near or over 30”. This hunt includes daily fees for one hunter and one nonhunter, and accommodations at the legendary Shiwa Ng’andu Estate. It also includes the $10,500 trophy fee for the sitatunga. The high bidder is required to take at least $10,000 in additional game during the 10-day hunt, but with the exceptional variety and quality of what is available, you will probably want to take more than that. Black lechwe may be hunted at an additional cost, as some flying is required to reach the Bangweulu Swamp. This package does not include permits, government fees, dipping, packing, shipping, taxidermy and airport transfers. This hunt can be taken in either 2012 or 2013, with the best hunting dates being around October. Charlie & Jo Harvey, Shiwa Ng’andu Estates P.O. This will be for five days during the peak of the Alabama rut. Accommodations will be at Dennis’s Magnolia Lodge (10 bedrooms, 4 baths). The hunt is all-inclusive except the Alabama hunting license (approximately $175). Pickup and return at the Birmingham International Airport are also included. The hunt will be on 5,000 acres of private land managed over 20 years for trophy quality. The high bidder will have their choice of five days between December 26, 2012, and January 10, 2013. The hunt can be postponed to the following season if necessary. Again, this is the ideal time to have an opportunity at a true free-range trophy Alabama whitetail. If the high bidder is successful on a buck early, a second or third may be taken on a trophy fee only basis of $1,500. Two does will be allowed for this hunt as well. One of the photos you see here is of GSCO member Jay Furney, who was the high bidder for this hunt in 2010 (Jay is in the red shirt). This hunt is to be scheduled for 2013 or 2014. It is a perfect parent/child or husband/wife hunt for huge free-range bull elk. The hunt includes excellent accommodations, fantastic meals, one landowner elk tag and an incredible hunting adventure! It is a horseback and foot hunt in Nevada’s GMAs #077, #076, #079 & #081, and offers the hunters a realistic opportunity to harvest an outstanding trophy bull elk, with a 400+ bull not being unrealistic. You cannot buy this hunt from an outfitter, nor will you find it anywhere else but at this GSCO event. This is not a guided or outfitted hunt, but rather a once-in-alifetime opportunity for a personalized trip with the landowners, both of whom are excellent elk hunters and long-time SCI supporters. The landowner elk tag alone is worth $12,000. Included are all hunting-related services once you arrive at the ranch, one Nevada landowner elk tag, and the outstanding hospitality and local knowledge of the two landowners. Not included is a Nevada elk tag for the second hunter. The second hunter may either draw in the state lottery, or purchase a landowner permit. Also not included are meat and trophy processing, shipping after the field care is done, and transportation to and from the Elko, Nevada area (70 miles away). To be completely clear about the second hunter’s drawing possibilities, and for any other information, it might be a good idea to contact Jim Boyer at either of the email addresses below. Hunters have their choice of weapon, either bow or rifle. One hunter may take a trophy bull eland, and the other hunter may take a non-trophy bull eland. This safari is 2 x 1, and would be perfect for a parent/child or husband/wife type adventure. The hunt can be upgraded to include many other species on this beautiful 70,000-acre ranch. Available are black and blue wildebeest, kudu, gemsbok, red hartebeest, Burchell’s zebra, steenbok, waterbuck, giraffe and more. A very special upgrade is also available, and that is the opportunity to hunt Hartmann’s mountain zebra! Hunting may be conducted from permanent ground blinds, elevated stands, and of course by spot and stalk. Bennie Boshoff will be the PH, and he is known for his integrity and hunting ethics. He is a true professional and does an impressive job. Accommodations will be individual bungalows, which are well crafted and beautifully decorated, situated in a fenced compound surrounding the Boshoff family home. The grounds, including a pool, are beautifully maintained, and comfortable to lounge in when you’re not in the field. Not to be discounted are the incredible meals you will enjoy during your safari, lovingly prepared by Doreen Boshoff. This package includes all accommodations during the hunt, fantastic home cooked meals, drinks, laundry services, PH and staff, field preparation of all trophies and all permits. Not included are tips and gratuities, airport transfers, taxidermy, dipping, packing, shipping, accommodations before and after the safari, sightseeing activities, VAT and other taxes and any hunt upgrades. That is exactly what this donation is for, but there is more! They currently do animals such as cape buffalo, deer, moose, caribou, elk and more, and the high bidder can have their choice of any of those. However, Carl says he will design a new piece just for you if none of these is what you desire. Matter of fact, in 2011 he did design both a fallow deer and Russian wild boar for GSCO executive director Dennis Campbell. You see those new pieces here as displayed in the GSCO museum. Many times a “European mount” is necessary or desired. The skull of a European mount is okay, but Jonas Brothers’s zoological art is certainly a tremendous upgrade. Our thanks go out to this fine taxidermy operation for this full donation. Furthermore, the Pepis and Jonas Brothers of New York are once again a top level Corporate Sponsor for 2012. We are most thankful for their additional and continued support. Stop by their booth to see their wonderful work. Carl Pepi, Jonas Brothers Studios, Inc. You can take six (yes, a half dozen!) non-trophy buffalo. The hunt can also be upgraded to include a trophy class bull if you so desire. This excellent hunting package also includes the taking of two wild boar. There will be five full hunting days for the up to eight trophies. This should be about as much fun as one could hope to have. Once you arrive in camp, everything but gratuities, packing and shipping is included. Not included are the hotel arrangements before and after the hunt, and the round trip bush flight from Darwin (it should run approximately $1,200). This hunt will be for five days during the last week of the season, which is normally late October, or into the first week of November. Nevada is well known for trophy mule deer, and Mike has definitely taken his share for clients. The name Humboldt Outfitters should be very familiar, as we will explain later. The high bidder does have to draw a tag, but with Nevada’s special outfitter draw, the odds are very high. Past bidders have had no trouble drawing. In the unlikely event that a tag is not drawn, the hunt may be postponed to a later year. Sergio Jimenez has been getting some monster rams on Carmen Island. The photos you see here are of GSCO members Tom Miranda and Tom Foss. Since we have invited the SCI Bowhunter Chapter to participate in the evening’s events, it seemed only appropriate to use these archery trophies to illustrate Sergio’s donation. This auction hunt is one of only two offered each year for TROPHY Carmen Island rams. Hunts are limited on Carmen Island, and this is a great way to get in on such a 100% opportunity. Practically everything is included upon arrival in Loreto, South Baja, Mexico. Just as in past years, a non-hunter is included at no extra charge. This is a great opportunity to hunt Carmen Island, get a great trophy desert bighorn sheep, support conservation, and have great fun doing all three. The Carmen Island conservation project has been producing animals for transplants to introduce and augment desert sheep opportunities in South Baja, Mexico. This is a great project.
