DANCE FOUNDATION
Dance Foundation provides kids a fun

they can learn to love dance. We

while meeting new friends, gaining
coordination and learning self
discipline. As a non-profit program
run through the Silver Springs
community Association, we are able
to keep our class sizes small and
prices low. Throughout the year we
will give the dancers the basics they
need to know in order to continue
dancing and performing in the future.
We love to dance and hope you
will too!

Pre Ballet (ages 3-5): Pre Ballet is for any child under 5
who likes to boogie! Based on fun and games, the kids will
improve their coordination and motor skills while meeting
new friends and learning the basis of dance!
Pre Tap (ages 3-5): Pre Tap is a class for children under 5
who would like an alternative to ballet. In this class
students will learn about rhythm while improving their
coordination skills. This is a great class for new students as
well as those who have just taken Pre Ballet.
Beginner Ballet (ages 5-7): Ballet
builds the foundation for all other
styles of dance. This class will give
dancers a little more technique in
dance without loosing the fun. This
class is great for those little ballerinas
who had one or more years in Pre
Ballet as well as new children
interested in dance.
Beginner Tap (ages 5-7): Beginner
Tap will help build the child's sense of
rhythm as well as movement. Great for
those kids who love to stomp around
and make noise! Dancers with or
without any dance experience are
welcomed.

Sr. Musical Theatre
This is a great way to gain the basic skills of dance while
enjoying the freedom of hip hop.
Beginner Jazz (ages 5-7): Jazz is one of the most
energetic and popular forms of dance. Kids in jazz will
experience a fast and fun moving pace! Jazz training is
recommended for younger kids who are interested in
continuing onto Hip Hop. Children with little or no
training are welcomed in this class.
Jr. Musical Theatre (ages 5-9): For all the Drama Kings
and Queens, Musical Theatre will teach performers the three
basis of show business: Dance, Singing and Acting! Classes
will be split into three sections and then combined at the
end of each class to give the children an opportunity to
experience performing as a whole!
Junior Ballet (ages 7+): Like Beginner Ballet, Junior
Ballet will continue building a strong foundation for all
other types of dance. This class will offer higher-level
movement with strength building, jumping, flexibility and
routines.
**NEW** Sr. Musical Theatre (ages 10+): We have taken
the Musical Theatre class to the next level. Sr. Musical
Theatre follows the same base as Jr. Musical Theatre but
with a more mature collection of songs and dance moves.
Junior Jazz (ages 7+): This class will build on the
techniques learnt in Beginner Jazz. This class will move at
a faster pace and include more complicated steps. Great for
all those who have enjoyed the fast energetic pace of Jazz!
Rhythmic Gymnastics (ages 5+): This class is great for
all the flippers and rollers in your house. The class will
combine simple tumbling moves with jazz techniques
while moving to music. Dancers will get the opportunity
to work with gymnastic balls and ribbons.
**NEW** Beginner Hip Hop (ages 5-7): This class is
designed for your little dancers who love to move and
groove. In this class, they will learn basic hip hop dance
moves as well as how to dance to the beat of a song.
Junior Hip Hop (ages 8-10): This class is perfect for
those high-energy kids. It will combine funk, hip-hop and
basic break dancing. This class is great way to learn style
and rhythm with other kids of the same age!
Intermediate Hip Hop (ages 10-12): Intermediate Hip
Hop is the extension of Junior Hip Hop. In this class
Dancers will learn more complicated moves while
combining the old moves into new combinations. Dancers
must have completed at least two years of Junior Hip Hop
prior to entering this class.
Dance Mix (ages 10+): This class is a great combination of
a variety of different styles for those teens who love to
dance. We will be learning hip hop on Mondays and
alternative dance styles like jazz and modern on Wednesday.

join us as we climb, roll, and explore.

enough interest – please call the office

Charity Job Slides into Action!
College Pro Painters offered a very
generous donation last month in
painting the Silver Springs
Community outdoor swimming pool
building, as a charity event on
July 20, 2009.
College Pro Painters
sprayed the
brickwork and
painted the trim of
the community pool
free of charge
supplying all of the
equipment, tools and
cleaning supplies to
insure a quality job.
ICI Paints donated
all of the paint for
the job, which was
greatly appreciated.
Marlon Schultz is the
College Pro Painters franchise
manager in the Silver Springs, and he
put a lot of hard work into planning
this charity event, donating his staff
and financing the project.
“I really appreciate all of the projects
the community entrusts my crews with
every year and I wanted to give
something back to a community that
has been so good to us,” said Schultz.
“I appreciated all of the local events
and volunteer work in my community
growing up and I thought I could give
back and do something meaningful for
the families in our community,” said
Schultz.
Schultz has been the franchise
manager in Silver Springs for two

Friends of the Gardens of Silver Springs
(formerly Birthplace Forest committee)
We hare now having a good growing
year for all our gardens. While the late
spring slowed things down the
gardens are now looking great. The
difference between our new gardens
and those we started last year is very
noticeable. A couple more years of
maturing and they will be even better.
In addition to the creation of new
garden beds our big project this year
was the construction of a storage shed.
Ron Treleven pretty well built the
thing himself. He has spent many
hours there this year and the result is
appreciated by all of us.
We have been in a regular
maintenance schedule of Tuesday,
Thursday and Saturday mornings
starting at 10. It seems no matter how
many people show up we are able to
find work for them. The quality of the
gardens is dependent on the quantity
of volunteer time we get. If you are
willing to volunteer a couple hours
weekly for maintenance work, for the
occasional 3 hour team work party, or
for helping with administration
contact Bob Caddel (403-288-4652)
or Duncan Badger (403-286-9631).
We have a good dedicated core of
volunteers and all seem to be getting
great satisfaction out of the work. We
invite you to join us.
We have been having some problems
with vandalism. In June at the core
garden we had our Inukshuk statue
and our trellises damaged. Also more
than once we have had our rope
fencing cut. While the financial
impact is small it is disappointing to
see this lack of respect for this public
volunteer run project. I guess it is a
lesson as to what
we need to build to
protect against.
Earlier this spring
we put in a
dedication bench
near the Core
Garden. This bench
was funded in
memory of Bill
Kobes, a long time
resident of Silver Springs. We are
grateful to the Kobes family for this
donation. We could use more benches
and the cost is a fraction of the city
dedication benches, so if you are
interested please contact Duncan
Badger (403-286-9631).
We are always open to suggestions as
to our project, so if you would like to
provide some input we would be
happy to hear from you. This project
is meant to be something that all of
Silver Springs will be proud of.

Basketball 2009/10 Registration
Registration for the 2009/2010
Basketball Season is available now
at www.silverspringscommunity.ca
Registration
Silver Springs Basketball is the home
club for all players from Arbour Lake,
Bowness, Lynx Ridge, Bearspaw,
Rocky Ridge, Royal Oak, Scenic
Acres, Silver Springs, Tuscany and
Valley Ridge who want to play in the
Calgary Minor Basketball Association
program in 2009-10. The program has
been administered by Silver Springs
Community Association for many
years. All programs run from
September to March and are subject to
adequate enrollment and volunteer
support. To register online, go on to
www.silverspringscommunity.ca You
can also register at the Silver Springs
Community Center (5720 Silver
Ridge Drive) or call 403-288-2616.
Volunteers
All basketball programs are offered
for our children by volunteers. Help,
both on and off the court, is essential
to the continuation of the program. As
part of the registration process, every
parent will have to commit to a
volunteer role or task and provide a
$50 volunteer deposit, which will be
cashed if the volunteer role or task is
not performed. Contact Steve at
239-0637 or Janice at 288-2616 to
let us know how you can help.
Programs Offered
Learn-to-Play, for ages 5-6,
introduces players to the game of
basketball. Dribbling, passing, and
shooting skills will be taught in fun
and engaging ways and there will be
lots of time for wide-open and
creative game play. 1-hour LTP
session will be run on Friday nights
using 6' nets and Size 5 balls. Players
are given a program T-shirt that is
theirs to keep.
Tyke, for ages 7-8, is a 5-team house
league that takes players a step closer
to CMBA-level basketball, with a
continued emphasis on fun and skill
development. There is more structured
game play that minimizes bench time,
consistently calls basic infractions,
and provides collaborative coaching
on court. Time is allotted for intrasquad practices and both intra-squad
and inter-squad game play. Tyke
sessions are run on Friday nights
using 8' nets and Size 5 balls. Players
are given a team T-shirt that is theirs
to keep.
Calgary Minor Basketball
Association (CMBA), for ages 9 and
up, starts with player evaluations
followed by player placement on
tiered teams that play inter-community
basketball. Practices are held on
weeknights in communities within our
registration area and most games are
played on Saturdays throughout
Calgary with some games on Friday
nights at higher age levels. Players in
or going into high school can play
community basketball until December
1, 2009. Players making their high
school teams become ineligible to
play community basketball and partial
refunds are issued on request. Players
provide a uniform deposit and are
issued full uniforms for return at
yearend. Depending on age, play is on
8½' or 10' nets and use Size 5, 6 or 7
balls.
Registration Requirements
!Fee payment for online registration is
with credit card only. If registering in
person, cheques or cash are accepted
(at the Silver Springs office, 5720
Silver Ridge Drive).
!All players must hold a current
community association membership
in their community of residence. You
may also purchase an associate
membership in Silver Springs as an
alternative.
!Registration forms and fees must
have been received before June 15,
2009 to be guaranteed placement on a
team. A late registration fee of $15 is
charged after August 1st.
!Refunds, less a 20% administration
fee, are provided if requested before
September 15, 2009. Refunds are
only provided after September 15 for
medical reasons and these requests
must be accompanied by a doctor's
note.
!Uniform deposits (if applicable) and
volunteer deposits are automatically
processed on April 30, 2010 if
uniforms aren't returned or volunteer
commitments haven't been met.

School News
Silver Springs Preschool
School's out for Summer! It's the end
of another year and what a fantastic
year it was! I'm confident in saying
that everyone had a ton of fun and
discovered the art of learning through
play at the Silver Springs Preschool.
Without the Teachers and Assistants
enthusiasm and compassion for our
children the preschool would not be
the success it is. Therefore, we would
like to take this opportunity to thank
them all for their hard work. Mrs.
Gloria Reid, Mrs. Hannah Pauls, Mrs.
Monica Morin, Mrs. Lynn Fasano and
Mrs. Julie McLeod all did an
outstanding job.
Orientation night for 2009/10 is
September 3rd in the Sunset Room
upstairs in the Silver Springs
Community Centre starting at 8 pm.
As the first days of preschool are an
exciting time for both the parents and
the child, orientation night is designed
specifically for the parents/caregiver
and preschooler. It is at this meeting
where many unanswered questions are
answered and everyone has a chance
to tour the facility (school) and meet
the teachers and their assistants.
Play Dough
Therefore, it is recommended that
other arrangements be made for
siblings during this time.
If you are currently registered in the
2009/10 school term you will be
receiving a welcoming letter from the
Silver Springs Preschool chair, Stacy
Page, outlining detailed information
about your child's specific start date.
You should receive this letter by late
July. If you are interested in learning
more about the Silver Springs
Preschool please contact myself,
Laura Crant, [email protected] or
visit our web page site at
www.silverspringspreschool.com.
Have a safe and happy summer! We
look forward to welcoming everyone
in September!

!1 cup all–purpose flour (250 mL)
!1 tbsp canola oil (15 mL)
!1 cup water in which a few drops
of food colouring have been
mixed (250 mL)
!1/2 tsp salt (2 mL)
!2 tsp creme of tartar (10 mL)
In a large
saucepan,
mix the
flour,
creme of
tartar and
salt. Blend
the food colouring into the water
until a darker version of desired
colour is achieved. Whisk coloured
water into dry ingredients. Place
saucepan on burner set over
medium heat. Using a wooden or
melamine spoon, stir mixture
constantly to prevent sticking. The
mixture will be soupy for several
minutes and very quickly stick
together and can be stirred into a
ball. When it thickens, remove the
saucepan from heat and continue
stirring. Turn the hot ball out onto a
lightly–floured surface, and begin
kneading. Knead the dough as it
cools, and until it is smooth.
This recipe makes nice soft dough
which keeps well when placed in a
covered container, in the
refrigerator or freezer. Use it as a
play–dough or to sculpt small
objects which can be air-dried until
hard. When dry, sculptures may be
painted with acrylic/tempera paints.
Finish by painting with a
water–based sealer.

Wild Weeds and Overgrown Grass
With summer in full swing, many
Calgarians are slowing down and
getting into relaxation mode. While
you are out on the deck this summer,
remember to take time out to keep
your lawn looking good. By
following a few simple guidelines,
you can ensure that you stay in
compliance with Calgary's
Community Standards Bylaws.
Keep your lawn shorter than six
inches in length
!This reduces fire hazards, prevents
infestations of mice and rodents and
maintains community pride.
!Three inches is the perfect length –
your lawn won't get scorched by the
sun and reduces the amount of
watering necessary.
Care for areas adjacent to
your property
!Areas adjacent to your property,
including back alleys and boulevards,
are the home owner's responsibility.
Keep the lawn mowed and ensure
that weeds are under control.
Calgary NW
Keep weeds under control and
prevent them from spreading to
other properties
!Regular lawn maintenance will help
reduce weeds.
!Consider pest-free options. For
more ideas go to calgary.ca/parks.
Check out the healthy yards program
under the community initiatives
section.
Keep up your property – even when
you're not there
!Lawn maintenance is important –
even when you are on vacation. Ask
a friend or neighbour to take care of
your yard while you're away.
!Landlords are ultimately responsible
for their properties. Make an
agreement with your tenants to
ensure that your property complies
with the bylaws.
By following these simple steps, you
and your neighbours will enjoy the
outdoors in a safe, pleasant and
nuisance-free environment.
For more information, call 3-1-1 or
visit Calgary.ca and search

Standards Bylaw.”
